Awww, look what the last photo I blogged from this computer was –
I miss the Bearsies!
The drive to Cville took….5 hours. Ugh. Luckily Matt and I worked out a deal where I didn’t have to drive. Sweet!! I studied some RD stuff. Wrote some freelance stuff.
Ate a date. It was perhaps the best date I’ve ever eaten. Food tastes better when you’re hungry 🙂
Then Matt and I shared this Probar. I LOVE Probars. I do not like that they are 360 calories and therefore 2 snack-size portions per package. Mini Probars would be awesome. And I think they win the record for the longest real food ingredient list 😉
I’ve had this Koka Moka flavor for well over a year. Maybe from last year’s Summit!? It was delicious and chocolatey!
We made it!! I don’t believe Matt and I have every spent time in Cville not in bad weather, with company or on business. Hoping the next few days are a lot of fun! I’ve been considering this house hunting trip a “working” trip but really it’s all play!
For dinner we went to one of the restaurants on The List: Mono Loco.
Latin Flare.
We dined with Matt’s fraternity brother, Dallas, who is just finishing up UVA law school! (And newly engaged!! And moving to ….CHARLOTTE!)
Matt got a Spice-a-rita to drink. A margarita made with jalapeno. I had a few sips – it was awesome!!!!! One of the top 3 margaritas I’ve ever had.
When we restock our kitchen, we need more of this jazz –
For dinner Dallas got some kind of pork tostadas
Matt got the Nola Loco – burrito filled with fried oysters!
And I hit the jackpot with the “Day at the Beach” filled with cod! This was a burrito in bowl form that had rice and beans on the bottom, lots of salad, corn, grilled cod,
And yuca fries!!! For some reason I had imagined these would look like Meghann‘s yuca fries 😉 It never occurred to me that they’d actually be…fried. But they were totally awesome and I ate ’em up.
I had a white sauce on mine too – I asked for it on the side. Glad it did because it was really rich. I did some dipping though. Ate about 75% of my dish and really had to listen to my stomach, which was screaming “I’m stuffed” when my mouth was saying “feed me more!”
I was extra stuffed because we ordered a side of fried plantains!! I LOOOOVE plantains!! These were doused in an apricot glaze that was out of this world. I think I had 4 total? They were really rich, but oh-so-good.
After we said farewell to Dalla$, we went for a walk to digest. After all, walking is good for digestion!
After a nice round downtown, we settled down for a nightcap.
I didn’t want a whole glass of wine, so I decided on port!
You know how I’m always saying how we should spend $10 on foods that we love (like peanut butter or swiss chard) because we can so easily spend just as much on something (like wine or a dessert) just as expensive in a restaurant? I will not tell you how much this tiny, tiny pour cost!!
Tomorrow, the hunt begins.
Nite!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Bearsies!!!! Glad they’ve got their seat belts on!
Good luck on the house/apt hunt.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Good luck on the hunt! Wine always is worth it. 😉
Dorry says
It’s so much fun to try new restaurants!
Love the name Dallas…since I’m from Dallas. 🙂
The Wife of a Dairyman says
How exciting to be house hunting. And what a great little restaurant! The Spice-a-rita looked really refreshing and such a combo 🙂
Katie @ Healthy Heddleston says
I love fried plantains too!!
Brynne says
A jalapeno margarita?! Two of my favorite things! I have to find somewhere with this magical drink ASAP .. if they have a fish taco salad that looks like yours well then that’s okay too!
Maggie says
Haha, I am always surprised when fries are actually fried! I’m so used to my baked “fries” 🙂
Chelsea says
Good luck with the house hunt! I love watching House Hunters ;p
This question may be a little random, but I thought I would ask anyways. What do you do when you feel like you have overindulged/eaten too much of some not so healthy food? I struggle with an eating disorder so I tend to really feel guilty about it and usually beat myself up about it for days afterwards. Any advice? It seems like you have a great balance when it comes to eating and that is something that I struggle with constantly. I either eat way too little or overindulge. Any advice would be really appreciated. 🙂
Kath says
Chelsea,
One meal does not an unhealthy eater make!! It’s part of the ebb and flow of life. You’re not going to gain weight from 1 meal. Heck, I had dessert every night at the beach last week and don’t feel that I gained everything. Probably because the rest of my days were pretty healthy. Focus on healthy foods most of the time and TRUST yourself that you’ll be fine.
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’ve always wanted to try the Pure Bars but the high calorie count always scared me away. Mono Loco looked AWESOME! I think I would eat every single thing you guys ordered 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
yucca is so great. i wish it were on more menus!
Diana says
Good luck! I know you guys will find somewhere awesome to live! 🙂
Hannah says
Ohhh, Charlottesville! My aching heart! Can’t even get plantains in Australia. Fail fail! But have a lovely “work” trip! 😀
Janna (Janna's Keeping it Real) says
Good luck tomorrow!
That marg sounds SO interesting!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
What fraternity is Matt in?
Cara says
Mmm..yummy dinner bowl.
Good luck with the house hunt. I am sure something wonderful will find its way to you. Have fun!
Anna Lee says
Must. Know. How. Much. Port. Was. I’d say about $14.oo for something top-shelf??
Kath says
Haha. It was $7. But WAY too much for such a small pour!
Anna Lee says
Kath as you know…a restaurant makes most of its money from the bar. If you just said “I’d like a port..” then they probably poured you something “special”. Since it’s a fortified (high alcohol) dessert wine, I’d say that pour looked OK, and would be comparable to a pour of any fancy high shelf “after dinner drink” like brandy. Anyway…as long as you enjoyed it is all that matters. Try a Frangelico sometime..it’s hazlenut liqueur. Yumm!! http://www.frangelico.com/
Mimi says
Ah, Mono Loco–I miss it! Kath, I just know reading your blog from now on is going to make me so homesick! I’m sure that everyone has been saying this to you, but, you will absolutely love C-ville!
Has anyone pointed you in the direction of the Country Store, yet? It has one of the most extensive and *cheapest* salad bars in town on the weekdays. They also have great homemade baked goods and fresh soups every day. It’s on the pavilion end of the Mall only a few doors down from the discovery museum. A great place for a quick lunch!
Good luck on your house hunt!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
Fried plantains in apricot glaze — sounds EPIC!!
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
Mmm. Fried plantains. I had some in Honduras once and wasn’t a fan. But two summers ago I was rooming with a girl from New Guinea, and she made fried plantains in the dorm kitchen and gave me a few. THOSE were good! And she was worried that they were burning!
Ashley says
Love plantains as well as walking after dinner. Seriously makes you feel so much better!! You look so very pretty in all of the photos 🙂 It’s so funny about the pour of port and comparing it to things like nut butter. Like Kombucha is SO expensive, but costs the same as an average beer, or cheaper. Have fun + good luck!
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
oooh I am intrigued by the ‘spice-a-rita!!!” YUM!
Laura (Starloz) says
Lovely dinner, I’m seriously awaiting summer & salads again, oh so excited.
Good luck with the hunting tomorrow.
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
I tired platain once and it was SO fould – I think I must have done it wrong..
Happy hunting today!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
I bow down at your ability to stop eating when you’re full! If I’m eating something totally yummy I can find it difficult to stop! The bears are cute and glad to see they are safe with their seat belts on!! Good luck with the house hunting.
Laine @ Beets, Butter and Mountaintops says
I love Probars! They were invented by snow boarders who wanted something high in calories to keep them going without taking a long time to eat and that could be stashed in their pockets.
The whole point of them is to be high in calories. I eat them when hiking, although it takes me a long time to eat one because they are so rich. They are good supplement to PB&J.
When you are burning almost 3000 on a hike, those 360 cals (and accompanying carbs and protein) come in very handy!
Laura says
Kath,
Do you have any recipes to make your own healthy bars? I’ve been thinking about doing it but the time thing gets in the way. Lara Bars look like they’d be pretty easy to duplicate.
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
Looks like a fantastic evening!! and I agree with you ….the good stuff is worth a little extra.
amanda says
I love fried plantains!! Delicious! I have also never heard of a jalapeno margaritta but sounds also equally delicious
Simply Life says
Good luck on the house hunt!
Katherine says
you look just like a wine taster in the final picture sequence
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Wow 5 hrs is a long ride. I agree about those Probars, I could eat 1 bar a week, that’s with one bite a day. The are so loaded that it makes them so high in calories.
Joy Tanksley says
Hey there! I’ve been reading your blog for about a month. This is so cool for me because I live in Charlottesville but will be moving in a month – very sudden job change situation for my husband. C’ville is an amazing, magical place and I will miss it very much. How cool that I get to vicariously enjoy it through your blog! Partiucalry all the great restuarants!! Mono Loco is one of my favorites. 🙂 So much good food in one little town. It’s nuts. Enjoy! And please have the mussells at The Shebeen sometime on my behalf.
Good luck with the house hunt!
Jess @ MTL Veggie says
I had a Koka Moka pro bar last week, I couldn’t believe how chocolatey it was, almost intense! haha I think my fav flavour is the cherry-pretzel I’m a huge lover of sweet/salty. I defintiely agree on the mini probars though, they would be amazing for portion control!
Good luck with the house hunt!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Good Luck! Have fun too…I love looking at houses!
Lauren says
People are always willing to spend money on ridiculous stuff but will walk away from something that costs $8 in the grocery store. I guess it’s just all about priorities, but I know that mine are in the food!
AKP says
YUM!!! I live a hop skip and a jump from C’ville!!! One of my friends keeps saying that the hubs and I HAVE to go to Mono Loco- After those pics I agree!!! Good luck with the move, Va is a BEAUTIFUL state, and Charlottesville is one of my favorite cities here 🙂

I have been wanting to try Pro Bars, but the calories count freaks me out a bit! It is almost a whole meal’s worth of calories. I think they are supposed to be meal replacement bars?

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I love it when restaurants have unique dishes like that instead of just your usual salmon on a salad or something. Yours looks really good!
Good luck on the house hunting. 🙂
Andrea says
Hi Kath! If you’re up for wine again tonight, check out Enoteca on the mall. You can get 3oz glasses of wine or 6oz, so that you can taste a few different varieties.
Looking forward to lunch tomorrow!
Richard says
Is it my imagination, or does Matt look really-really relaxed and calm in Cville? More so than in months? If so, that’s an auspicious sign with which to begin this new venture! Good luck with the house-hunting.
