I just beat the rain this morning! Up at 7, out the door by 7:45 (yeah, I had to read emails and blogs in bed for a bit
)I ran 5.3 miles in the neighborhoods around my house. It was a good run. I seem to run well with an empty stomach – it’s like my stomach leads the way and if it’s full, it’s sluggish. The highlight of my run was definitely the Hey Dude theme song. “Freebird” gave me energy and Celine Dion’s “To Love You More” (my all-time favorite) brought in the final sprint just when the rain started coming down.
Matt brought home a nice loaf of Flax Oat Bran last night, so I decided to involve it in breakfast (esp. because that means no cooking and no pots to clean when I’m in a hurry).
I had two slices with 1/2 a mashed banana (the best way to eat banana on bread!) with walnut butter, the very last of my TJ’s blueberry preserves and flax
Plus a glass of soymilk shaken with Superfood Greens
And green peppermint tea (some generic brand)
Mary is out of the office today, but I am going into work to sit in on an appt with my friend Erin, who is an RD already and finishing her masters at Winthrop. We took Sports Nutrition together last summer. Then I’m spending the afternoon working alone in Mary’s office on some things: an article on pregnancy nutrition, some event planning, some work on my KERF online consultation text and some public relations stuff. I packed a lunch (AND better snacks today) and feel like a professional again 🙂
Watch out for those man-eating jackrabbits… And that killer cacti!
Betsy says
Hah, nice throwback. Mr. Ernst anyone?
Holly says
Yummy bread! I had mashed banana with PB too last night — soooooo good!
Way to be all professional :). Enjoy your day!

I like running on an empty stomach to, to a certain extent! If it’s growling when I wake up, I really have to eat something or I get stomach pains mid run. Also, if I’m running long distances (6+), I have to eat or I crash after an hour and tend to mail in the rest of my run.
I love the picture of your Superfood shake this morning. The perspective is perfect!!
april says
I wish I could workout without eating but sadly I have to have had a big breakfast in my tummy!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Awesome run Kath! And what a delicious way to refuel after all that exercise. I am always so jealous by your delicious assortment of breads! 🙂
Sounds like you have a busy day ahead of you, but you seem prepared! Have a great day and can’t wait to hear how work goes.
Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) says
Although eating something before working out is conventional wisdom, my runs are much better on just a cup of coffee + glass of water. I feel hydrated, but not weighed down. Works for me! Have a good day in the office 🙂
Allison K says
I liked Hey Dude so much as a kid, but I LOVED salute your shorts!
Sues says
Mashed banana on an english muffin is such a good idea! I love bananas, but don’t really enjoy just eating a whole one plain. I’ll def try this!
Kati says
It sounds like your job is going to be great this summer! Makes me want to go back to school…
Nicole (dishin') says
I love your placement!
Nicole (dishin') says
placemat, that is! 😉

I definitely used to pretend that I lived on the ranch with Melodie and Brad.
Alison says
I was a Hey Dude fan too and use to gallop around the living room to the theme song! hehehe hadn’t thought about that in a looooong time! 😉
Sara says
Oh I loved Hey Dude! They don’t make good shows like that anymore. 🙂 Breakfast looks great.
brandi says
ah, I miss Hey Dude! That and Salute Your Shorts 🙂
Sounds like a good + busy day!
Christina says
totally agree with you on the mashed banana statement. It’s the only way I eat it on bread nowadays!
Anne K. says
Great run! And that bread looks delicious. I’ll have to try mashing the bananas on bread! I usually just slice them 🙂
Have a lovely day!
KatieTX says
LOVE Hey Dude. Now the theme song with be playing in my head as I work! The boy on that show was super cute too…

you always have the best kinds of “butters”. I’m obsessed with spreads! I’m collecting “butter” spreads now, I have 4 already!
londonwee says
when you run, do you carry a water bottle with you/ do you have one of those water carrying straps? or do you go without water the whole run?
JohannaB says
I must have missed something. I’ve never seen Hey Dude.
I, too, envy your delicious selection of breads. We don’t have any bakeries in town – unless you count donut shops and one cupcake place. We do have Panera’s but I’ve never just bought bread there.
stepfanie says
I LOVED Hey Dude! Oh, and Salute Your Shorts. Did you watch Salute Your Shorts, too? Made me love Rilo Kiley all that much more after learning Blake played Pinsky!
Graze With Me says
I love your photo ops of all your meals, esp the straw shot, spoon views and that one of your shake.
Toast looks delish!
Ambimom says
Kath, while I love seeing your photos, you’re spending a fortune. Why spend $15 for nut butter when you can buy a pound of organic nuts at Trader Joe’s for $5 and grind them in a Cuisinart? Same result. I add honey and cinnamon to my almond butter. As for bread, haven’t you heard of Sourdough No-Knead Bread? Five pounds of white/whole wheat flour is $2.50 at Trader Joe’s. Sourdough starter costs nothing. You can mix in bran, flax, etc. Easy, fast, delicious and economical. Each loaf will cost about $1 compared to $5.
Ally says
Hey Dude and Celine Dion totally bring back memories!! Closet Celine Dion fan over here too…hehe.
Seriously though, I could never run to Freebird. Easily one of the most overplayed songs ever – I can’t even take listening to it on the radio let alone trying to run to it. I get really annoyed if I don’t like the song on when I’m working out so I’d just waste a lot of energy being angry. Plus it seems kinda long so it would just make the run seem that much longer. hehe.
Great job though. I think I run faster to music in general? Ever notice that? And ditto on the empty stomach thing.
Amanda says
Ambimom, I’m sure Kath can answer you for herself, but her husband works at Great Harvest and gets the bread for free (or heavily discounted?)!
Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) says
Your “work” sound like so much fun. I’m not preggers (or planning on it), but I’d love to read your nutrition article when its done!
Joe Tan says
that is a very healthy meal for the start of the day. I live here in the philippines and can you tell me the healthy properties of flax seeds?
God Bless
Danielle says
Just about a month ago i was looking for the opening of Hey Dude on YouTube, too funny!
rhodeygirl says
my cousin likes to mash the banana too. I prefer to put it in the fridge and then slice it really thin (i use 1/2 banana on 2 slices). LOVE the combo of chewy/hot (the bread) with soft/cold (the banana). yum! add a little WF pb and I’m ready to go. yummmmm
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
bread looks awesome! and you can’t beat pb and banana 😉
have a great work day 😉
K says
Ahhhh the good old days when kids shows were actually good 😉
Enjoy your day today!
Deirdre says
I loved Hey Dude! I still can’t see Christine Taylor in any movie or at any premiere with Ben Stiller without thinking of the show!
Emily says
I would also love to read your article on pregnancy nutrition! My husband and I are planning on expanding our family very soon, so any info. I can get on it would be great!!
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
Great favourite song! I see you appreciate Canadians 🙂
I find that I run way better on almost empty too. As I have been saying on my blog, I have had some stomach issues lately while running and (thank Goodness) all my tests, including ultrasound show that there is nothing wrong. Perhaps I have a super sensitive stomach. Do you think I should see an RD to come up with the best things I should eat? I am very active and I don’t want to give up running.
Lovely looking breakfast. Hearty!
jackie says
How do you resist sweets? I have a terrible sweet tooth. Case in point, yesterday ,a co-worker brought in these delightful chocolate brownie cookies and then we had birthday cake. Then I made rice crispy treats (I had promised days ago to bring a dessert) for book club and some one made puppy chow. Of course a large slice of cake, a large cookie, 3 rice crispy treats and 4 handfuls of puppy chow isn’t a usual day, but I can’t figure out how to resist the tempation. How do you consistenly curb your sweet cravings and only have a small bite of desserts?
Natalie says
Love the idea of putting mashed banana on toast! I’m gonna have to do that sometime soon 🙂
JENNA says
your intern sounds like so much fun!!!!!!!
Brynn says
I was assigned locker 2626 today and thought of you! 🙂

I’d love to read your article on pregnancy nutrition. Will you link to it when it’s done?
Kristan @ The Stepford Wife says
OMG, I LOVED that show. Good stuff.
Michelle says
ahh i totally agree, mashed banana is the best way to eat a banana on toast!! I especially like the spotty ones because they’re so ripe and easy to mash!!
P.s. I’m hosting my very own Big Lucky Giveaway and I hope you’ll come check it out!! 🙂
Lynette says
I’ve never mashed the banana up to eat it on bread – but that is a great idea. It would probably be good with a little honey mixed into it also.
Sarah says
I used to LOVE Hey Dude, that brought back memories 😉 Have fun at work!
Melissa (fitnessnyc) says
oh my god I love that show. I wanted to be just like Melanie and Brad!
Gillian says
I am an avid early morning runner – running after work even though I have 4 hours to digest since lunch,I would still often cramp up. I know if I am running in the morning dinner needs to energy filled but NOT heavy.
If my run is under 6-7 Km then I don’t consume anything – between 10-12 Km I will have a cliff bar half hour before before – 12 -16 Km a cliff bar (any energy bar of your liking will do) before and also bring 1 cliff shot (or portable energy of your liking) to down around the 10-11Km mark – and if I am doing a 21Km (half mara distance) I will eat a cliff half hour before then bring 2 cliff shots to consume during the run.
I think everyone is different with their running fuel. I know I can get up eat some PB on toast then run as cramp attack will happen. I often wake at 5:45 to mow down my cliff bar if doing a long pre work run then sleep for 15 minutes more before I actually get up and get my running gear on. Simple energy is what works for me – complex carbs the day before YES – day of run – HECK NO!
It is all finding about what works for you – lots of trial and error is required!
KM says
I loved hey dude! Christine Taylor actually grew up down the street from me in Wescosville, PA so it’s crazy to think that someone who grew up in my neighborhood is now married to Ben Stiller and in the whole Hollywood world!

Nut butter and banana are my favourite bread toppings – yum!

It’s a little wild and a little strange, when you make your home out on the range!
I LOVED that show! So downloading that to my playlist. I like the Fresh Prince theme, too. 🙂
Jess says
I feel so much better running on an empty stomach. I make myself eat something before long runs, but it sits funny for a few miles.
Tay says
How do you like the Walnut butter? Is it the Artisana brand? I’ve seen it and wanted to try it, but wasn’t sure what to expect!
Tammy says
I’ve always loved pb and banana sandwiches, but I love the idea of mashing the banana, adding flax, and using walnut butter. Great suggestions!
Amanda4Sensei says
Man, I used to be able to work out with an empty stomach, not anymore 🙁 I find myself so out of energy…it sucks!
Becci says
I LOVE your orange plate!!!

Gotta love the professional working world!! 🙂

I am preggers and would LOVE to read your article of pregnancy nutrition! Will you post a link when you’ve finished it?
Sounds like you had a great day.
Kath says
londonwee,
I don’t carry any water with me. I usually drink before and after pretty heavily. I just couldn’t handle the sloshing of a water belt. If I were running longer distances I would need to though, and sometimes I do stop at the YMCA for a drink on hot days if I’m nearby.
Ambimom ,
I think I’m the only one who knows how much I am spending…..
My husband is a bread baker and that is always free. The walnut butter was a gift. We generally are very careful with the groceries we buy – only spending more on the very best “worth it” ingredients. You might want to check out my Thanksgiving Challenge posts from last November.
Joe Tan,
Check out http://www.whfoods.com for a whole info page on flax.
Re. pregnancy article,
I can’t share it on KERF or we couldn’t get it published, but I will certainly share it if it is. And I’ll try to share some tips from it someday when I start writing.
Melissa @ For the Love of Health,
Seeing an R.D. couldn’t hurt. But trial and error is probably your best strategy.
jackie ,
I simply just don’t eat them! Make the decision. You are in control. Get them out of your house. I promise it gets easier with time.
Brynn ,
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! Wish I could have had it too!
Tay ,
Yes it’s Artisana. I like it a lot. It really is just like pureed walnuts. Very fresh tasting.

Kath, I cannot get over how cute your dish collection is! Dish shopping is one of my favorite pastimes;)

LOL, Hey Dude! I hardly ever think about that show anymore, but I could probably still sing the theme song… so catchy! 😀
Stephanie says
I just love those Trader Joe’s blueberry preserves. I just got Veganomicon, and I am going to use those preserves to make fudgy wudgy blueberry brownies for father’s day – YUMMY!!! 🙂
