Not just my oats this morning (
), but Kelly’s video at the bottom!I didn’t even wake up when the husband left at 3:30 this morning – but then I woke up at 5am shaking and freaked out from a horrible dream about one of my parents friends getting killed in a hut collapse in a foreign country. It was so creepy.
My alarm officially went off at 6, and I got up, did 20 minutes of YogaDownload Intermediate Morning Flow. It was the one with all the backbends (I had forgotten) but I still really enjoyed it. I’m liking the flow and strength moves so much more these days (but still don’t want to do more than 20 minutes!)
The oat combo was a good one:
- 1/2 cup oats, milk, water, tiny banana, pinch salt (just felt like a bigger portion today)
- 3 tiny dried figs, a pinch each of cranberries and raisins
- 1/2 tbsp ground flax
- ~3 walnuts, broken into pieces
- ~1 tbsp Blueberry Vanilla Crackle Granola Plank
- Spoonful EF PB
I had this Pure Joy tea that a reader gave me in Chicago! I made me feel very clean 😉
Also made sure to take my vitamin for the Vit. D boost to help combat my SAD, as we have a horrible cloudy/rainy day. I used to take a vitamin every day, then I moved it to every other day when my prof said there’s no reason not to for people who eat very healthy, but then I just kept forgetting it! I know from past diet analyses that I’m getting at least 75-85% of most of my vitamins and minerals from my diet (over a 3-day average, and of course some of them were over 100% like vitamin A!) but 75% isn’t 100%! I think I’d have to just eat a lot more overall to get 100% naturally on everything, and that would probably mean eating more energy than I need.
Guest Video!
You guys know that I am not a huge fan of strength training and am always trying to cut corners! So I asked Kelly of Every Gym’s Nightmare if she’d do a video for us on how to reduce weight lifting time by combining exercises. She put together this speedy workout – in under 8 minutes!! We ALL have 8 minutes to spare 😉 Her last exercise, the Blurpees (I hope I said that right) are what I made Kelsey and I do in our bootcamp on Friday. I agree – they are tough! I add a jump out of the squat to the end of mine for an extra killer boost.
So without further ado, thank you Kelly!!
I’m off to tackle to-dos.
And to the gym later to give Kelly’s moves a try

Kath,
I am stumped. This morning I got on the scale. I weigh myself about two times a month, and decided I couldn’t ignore what I saw anymore. I have gained 6 lbs since August, at a rate about 1 lb/month. At first I told myself that they were just fluctuations, but it seems to be holding steady as an increase. I do three 30 minute elliptical sessions each week (usually around 3 miles during that time,) strength train, do yoga 2x/week, and go on at least 1 hour long walk each week (if not several extra, shorter walks.) I keep track of my calories to make sure I eat enough (1700 calories/day) and I am pretty precise about this with measuring and a food scale. It’s all healthy stuff. The most “desserty” I get is a weekly fat free frozen yogurt (with the Office on Thursdays!) I don’t eat out a lot. It’s not work for me to eat healthfully; like you, I enjoy it and feel best when I do. I know this can’t be all muscle mass gain like I have been telling myself. I’m 23 and 5′ so I know this calorie amount is probably good for me; my BMI is healthy. I just want to reverse this trend and get back to where my clothes fit more comfortably. Can you think of anything I am missing when you look at this brief picture of my health? Is it being obsessive to worry about this weight gain, or should I change something in my habits? I just don’t want any MORE weight gain, and to be honest I’d rather be a little lighter because 6 lbs ago I was still at a healthy weight and felt less self-conscious about my stomach (which is where the weight seems to have gathered.) I’m not pregnant either 🙂
Anyway, I’m not sure if you feel like you could answer this, but I thought I would try.
Thanks,
Sarah

Thank you for the morning boost of oatmeal and yoga! I started my day at 5am at the gym in a great muscle sculpting class. My oatmeal was wonderful ,hot and crunchy. Im meeting my friend at noon for a stair running time at the stadium! I love days like this! Your blog is so wonderful..I am hooked!

I love Kelly!!! She is just as cute and talented as she is FUNNY! Love her!

I must say all the oats you eat have inspired me to spice mine up a bit lately. You always have such fun combos. Anywho, I had run out of fresh bananas, but remembered that I had froze some, because I usually make banana bread out of them. However, I defrosted one slightly and used about half of it in my oats, yummy yummy. I think because it was way more ripe it added more flavor. I also added in some cinnamon, 7 butterscotch chips, and crumbled 1 vanilla oreo on top. Maybe a bit excessive, but the best oats I have made to date!

I read this “how to reduce weight lifting time by combining exercises” as “how to reduce weight lifting time by combining excuses.”
That’s more my speed.

Hey Kath!! I know for a fact that if you take a yoga class that ends up being 90 minutes, it goes by much faster b.c you are with other people and it moves a lot more smoothly. have you considered joining a studio? Having an instructor in real life is so moving and inspirational!! but cant argue with those yoga downloads!!
I must try FIGS in my oats soon! Such a great idea. Such a fruity bowl!! what’s EP PB?
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
* I mean EF PB
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
oh is it Earth Fare?

Sorry about the nightmare. I haven’t had one in a while but the last time I did I woke up completely freaked out and woke up my boyfriend to hold me and calm me down. It was awful.
But your oats look delicious! Can’t wait to try some of Kelly’s exercises.
Kori says
Sarah- your scenario is a common one, so don’t stress! It is VERY easy to have a little weight creep up on you even when you are diligent about your health. It only takes an extra 100 cal/day to gain 10lbs in a year. Plus, as we age our metabolism slows gradually and what use to be enough exercise to maintain will become not quite enough. Because you are already so healthy minded, the best way to deal with a small gradual gain is to just up the intensity of your workouts a little to get your metabolism sizzling! Your food intake sounds about right, so you can really reverse your gain with just a slight change to your workout. Do it slow though, so it sticks as a habit and you will be happy with the results! Good Luck!
Kath- thanks so much for Kelly’s video!
Maggie says
Don’t let SAD get you down! I have it too, but it’s gotten so much better since I live in California now (I went to school in upstate NY = miserable times). I totally understand about getting into flow now – once you have the strength to hold the moves it’s so much more fun. Happy Tuesday!

Sarah ,
Weight gain is simply a reflection of energy balance. There are no tricks – if you gain, you’re eating more and burning less, and if you lose, the opposite. So if you’ve gained 6 pounds in 6 months, you could be just eating a little more than you’re burning. Try adding 10 minutes to your workouts, a daily walk, or cutting back on portions and see if your gain stalls. If it does, that was the trigger. That said, if you don’t notice it stalling, I would second the recommendation to have blood work done. You never know what other factors could be involved.
kptea ,
I am always partial to bananas and toast with PB. Light carbs that are easy to digest for me.
Michelle ,
Thanks for stopping by! Your morning sounds wonderful!
Katie ,
Oreo!!??! Yum!! I bet that was like an ice cream sundae 🙂
seelee live,
Yes, EarthFare peanut butter. (Going to check out your exchange in a second…)
Stephanie ,
Great post!! I am SO disappointed in Starbucks…
Karla ,
So it’s a multivitamin in a juice? Very interesting. I would like to try it, but it doesn’t sound like something I’d drink daily.

Great video from Kelly!
Sarah says
Kori, Kath, and Yadi,
Thanks so much for your helpful suggestions. I am going to amp up my workouts a little with increased time and intervals and add in an extra walk every day because I think it would be unrealistic for me to eat less and still have enough energy for my day and flexibility for social settings. I really appreciate your caring responses; it made me feel better that none of you said “obviously you’re not trying!” or suggested I go on a mega diet because that’s not something I want to do (not realistic or healthy.) Thanks.
Sarah
