This was one of those weekends where there was barely time to catch my breath! Between a handful of social events, 3 soccer games and family time, we were busy as the giant bumble bees that are swarming around outside these days. I had hoped to break this post into 2-3, but alas I’m just now typing it all up!
Friday night we had our neighbors (new and old!) over for drinks and pizzas. We opened the Pippin Hill Rose dad bought us last weekend. It’s one of my favorite roses ever!
Our neighbors brought a salad, and Matt made 5 of these pizzas that we nibbled late into the evening.
Saturday morning I had a yogurt, fruit and granola parfait. Haven’t made one of these in a long time!
Mazen and I got dressed and headed downtown.
We stopped into the market, but he asked to go to “the play structure” at ACAC so I took a detour there and gladly read my Kindle on the roof for 30 minutes while he got his play on! I’m 70% through this book and love it! The Civil War has always been one of my favorite historical time periods thanks to Gone with the Wind!
We went back to the market, talked to some of our friends and then picked up lunch for a picnic at the park with more friends! I ordered lunch from a Caribbean guy and got these yummy beans with rice and plantains!
We love our Babiators!
After the park Sarah convinced me to join her at the grocery store, and I’m so glad I did because there was no time on Sunday to go! The Sayas had fun shopping together. Someone asked me which smoked salmon I buy – it’s the Whole Catch wild Alaskan sockeye!
Then I cleaned the fridge which was gross with drippings
And filled it with new food! So refreshing.
Birchbox, this is my favorite box design yet!!!
I had a late afternoon soccer game to go to. Our game was rough and dirty, and we lost. Not the greatest. I also came home starrrrrrving having not eaten but half of those beans since 11:30 and a few almonds before my game. Mazen was thrilled when I opened this bag of chips and we had a free-for-all.
I got a growler of Barefoot Black Raspberry kombucha – my new favorite – to have for cocktail hour.
Matt came home a little later (he’d been at a brew demo all day!) and after we put Mazen to bed, we made burgers on the grill. SO delicious!! My stomach was feeling off from being so hungry and then all the chips, so I decided against the big salad I had planned on the side and just had a few carrots.
Sunday morning I had another soccer game bright and early. I set my alarm so I could fit in some fuel and made this breakfast sandwich for another freelance recipe. Herbs de Provence were involved!!
Game #2 went well – we played on turf, which was nice, and we won 1:0. I had the assist on the goal, which was cool! {Note the hot air balloon!}
Post-game snack!
After the game I rushed home and quickly showered and prepped some lunch provisions for a picnic in the park with friends. We brought salmon and pimento cheese sandwiches and our friends shared Bodo’s bagels with cream cheese. It all tasted so great after 90 minutes on the field!
I biked to the park and back to save my foot’s energy in between games while Matt ran with the stroller . My poor surgery foot (I need a better name for it!) is really feeling all the activity lately. Rest day tomorrow!
After taking a break to write this post up to this point, I went to game #3 of the weekend – my women’s league game. During this game I did score a goal, but we unfortunately lost.
Total soccer time in the past 24 hours: 4.1666 hours! I hit a record on my Jawbone today: 26,000 steps and ~12 miles.
When I got home there was a dad get together happening in our backyard, so I grabbed half a beer and joined the fun, sweat, crazy hair and all!
Dinner is stuck on my DSLR, but I had a big salad with goat cheese and an extra burger on top. Plus a Dr. Kracker and a bag of kettlecorn popcorn!
Ellen and I went to see The Longest Ride – loved it!! Loved Scott Eastwood the most! I heart all the Nicholas Sparks movies.
Mazen learned a new trick. This little boy is STRONG! He says “Hang Tough!”

Cleaning the fridge is probably one of my least favorite chores. Your post reminded me that I probably need to get around to cleaning mine soon.

I love Mazen’s Harry the Dirty Dog shirt!! Where did you get it?
KathEats says
It was an Easter gift from grandparents so I’m not sure
Jodi says
My fridge is clean but not nearly as organized as yours! You have inspired me to throw out a bunch of old dressings, sauces, etc. and start fresh. I bet you’ll be starving today from all of that weekend activity!
Aya says
Love that Harry the Dirty Dog shirt! My daughter loves those books. : )
Jennie says
Wow, look at all the outside space your new place has to enjoy! Do you have 2 back decks areas?

We were at the neighbors

Still waiting on an indoor/outdoor house tour of your new home. I felt really connected to your photos previous house and could picture you guys in each room. Feel kind of lost when you post photos now and can’t get a real feeling of where you guys are. But, still really enjoy all of your posts! Btw, love the “Harry the dirty dog” shirt…one of my granddaughters favorites!
heather jones says
she said shes not doing a formal post with a tour of the house a few posts back.

26K steps? That’s amazing! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that many in a day in my life. 🙂
Great pictures of Mazen – I love the one of him all smiley with the chips.
There’s definitely something about tackling cleaning projects in the Spring (even indoor ones). I cleaned a bunch this weekend despite great weather outside. lol
Julia says
I too love a clean, newly stocked fridge. Sad it happens so rarely around here… Might just have to do that today! Your weekend looks fun but tiring. We also had a jam packed weekend. On Saturday, we went to Germantown in Phillly to see the new twins in our family. Hung out in Manayunk for the afternoon, and spent Sunday at our son’s karate tournament in Quarryville, Pa. Today chilling at home with a cyber school day and an afternoon bike ride.
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
dannng awesome job with all the soccer this weekend! And your fridge is making me want to clean mine out too!

What size are M’s sunglasses? The 0-3 look so small.
KathEats says
The black ones we have are large and the green ones we have are smalls. He’s clearly best suited for the large now, but he still loves the green ones!
Hannah @ eat, drink and save money says
Such a fun weekend. Mazen has the best smiles for the camera. I love it!

Clean fridges are amazing! Grocery shopping is very therapeutic 🙂

Kath, My husband & I will be spending a few days in & around Charlottesville in June. We visited a couple of years ago and before the trip I scoped out your Cville page pretty well. But it seems there are many new restaurants, shops, even breweries/vineyards that may be worth checking out this time. Plan for us your perfect long weekend in your town (old favorites & new)! Thank you for any suggestions, we can’t wait to visit! 🙂
KathEats says
This would make a good blog post idea – how to spend your weekend in Cville! I’ll see if I can plan it in.
In the meantime…
Not to miss: Monticello (if you missed it before), Blenheim, Trump and Jefferson Vineyards (all close together), Pippin Hill for an afternoon snack and more wine, Three Notch’d Brewing (my favorite beers), the Monticello Trail is a great place for a workout. And UVA of course! OH and Great Harvest for breakfast or lunch!! The city market on Water St. on Saturday morning. Brookville has an AMAZING brunch! Think a pancake the size of your head and killer bacon dishes. For dinner – Commonwealth and Zocalo are my favorites! Hamilton’s, C&O and The Clifton Inn are on the fancy side and Whiskey Jar, Mono Loco and Citizen Burger are on the casual side. Eppie’s is great for lunch!
Kelly says
Thank you so much for your ideas! I am looking forward to our trip especially getting to experience some of the amazing places I see on your blog. And I agree and entire post would be a fun!

Hi Kath,
I’m just wondering about your foot surgery and what you specifically had corrected. My 25-year old, very active daughter has a fractured sesamoid in her foot and I’m looking for stories of success in healing and getting back to an active lifestyle. She hasn’t had surgery yet, but it sounds like she might as we hear that healing is complicated in that area. Thanks!
KathEats says
I had a fused subtalar joint that was extremely painful towards the end. My surgery unfused it. I was also told that lots of arthritis was “scraped out” but someone recently told me that’s not how arthritis works, so I have no idea what else the doctor did! My recovery was 6 weeks on crutches in a boot and then physical therapy. It wasn’t easy, but I was running again 6 months later and pretty much could do everything 9 months to a year later.
Denise says
Thanks so much for sharing that Kath! I had idea how complicated and scary foot-related injuries are until this happened. You had a different issue, but it’s good to see that you were able to overcome it and return to a very active lifestyle.
