It was back to rice cooker oats today! Long time, no see.
Rice cooker oats saved me during the first trimester when standing up to make breakfast each morning was a challenge.
Once my taste returned (around 15 weeks) hot stove-top oats were back at the top of my list. But my rice cooker felt neglected when I put beans in it instead, so I brought it back out last night for oats.
The mix:
- 1/3 cup coach’s oats
- 1/2 banana
- Pinch cinnamon
- Pinch salt
- 1 cup water
–> porridge setting
–> timer
1/2 cup cottage cheese stirred in this morning and topped with salty p-nuts, WF peanut butter and Grandma Candy’s Jam
But sadly this was not the oatmeal of my dreams. It was very gummy and just…not great. I shame since it’s so fun and easy to make! But nothing compares to stove-top…
I enjoyed my oats with some House Hunters this morning and nearly choked on my tea when I saw my friend Jessica from Davidson as the realtor du jour!!!!!!!!!!!! So exciting – and a great Durham, NC episode too!
Here was dinner with Jessica just a few months ago – she’s in yellow with the cute glasses!
I am a House Hunters FANATIC so this was a huge fun surprise : )
[PS. I have about a 95% success rate with guessing which house the people choose and I got it WRONG on Jessica’s episode!]
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I love House Hunters, but the funny thing is that I’ve only ever watched a few episodes with sound. It’s always on when I’m at the gym so I watch it but have my ipod on while I run – if I like it in silence, I’m sure I’d be addicted if I was actually listening to the people talk! LOL 🙂 Have a great day Kath!
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Okay have you not posted that AWESOME star wall decoration before or am I just seriously non-observant? Don’t answer that if it’s B.
That’s way cool! I’m a HH fanatic too. I could watch it all day long and the Mr hates it when he gets sucked in to an episode…or 50. Sorry the oatmeal didn’t turn out so hot. There’s always tomorrow! 😉
KathEats says
It’s from World Market – a paper star!
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
I’ve been stirring in cottage cheese into my oats lately as well. Love the curds. Did I just say that?
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love the first picture you posted! So pretty! 🙂 I love that star and I have the same mug with a “H” on it obviously. I can’t wait to try using a rice cooker for oats. The oats look so good!
So awesome that your friend was on HH!
KhushbOo says
Perhaps add in chias next time for a creamier texture?
Greta @ Staying Lost says
Interesting to hear that you’re not into the rice cooker oats anymore. When you were posting about them all the time, the rice cooker method sounded tempting.
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Love that show…one of the only reasons I am bummed we don’t have cable.
Sam says
I saw that episode last night and I thought that realtor seemed really cute and friendly. 🙂 That’s cool that you know her!
Emily @ the doodlebug says
I watched this too and ALSO picked the wrong house!
KathEats says
Number 3, right?
Elisabeth says
Watched, too! So cool that she’s your friend. Oh, and definitely should have picked #3! 😉
Erika - The Teenage Taste says
Breakfast looks so good! I love the peanut butter and jelly combo (who doesn’t), but I feel like it’s especially good in oats. Have a great day, Kath! 🙂
Allison k says
I tried cottage cheese in my oats(and I loooove cottage cheese) and the texture/flavor combo totally grossed me out. I really wanted to like it, but no dice.
Angel7 says
Ever since I started reading your blog last year, and have learned how much you love to watch House Hunters, I am now a huge House Hunters fan 🙂

I love that star, it’s so cute!! World Market is the best!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I have never seen a House Hunters from my home town (Kansas City) and I think it would be so cool to see one! I’ve bet they’ve done one… I should research this.
Tracy says
I’ve seen a couple of KC episodes! (I’m in Kansas City)
Maria@ Sinfully Nutritious says
Breakfast looks great!
Bridgette says
I so love House Hunters too, and I esp can’t get enough of House Hunters International…just because I love to see the different types of lving and houses people want when in other countries. It is so different than the norm in America! Plus, who wouldn’t want to dream of exotic places 🙂
Have a great day!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I did the same thing when I saw a girl I went o high school with on The Nanny. And her kids were NOT well-behaved. 😉
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
The whole peanuts in your morning oats look sooooooo good! I crave crunchy peanut butter!
Alicia says
Sorry the oats weren’t as good as you hoped for. It was Greek yogurt here this morning, loaded with banana and blueberry, a little homemade almond butter, and a little granola. Totally forgot my chia seeds this morning though. At least I won’t spend all morning picking them out of my teeth!
Hope you have a fantastic day today!
Katharina says
Ughhh sorry you didn’t have the oats of your dreams this morning, but watching House Hunters on the couch sounds like a nice relaxing morning! Hope that made up for it. 🙂
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Ha…that’s too funny. I love it when House Hunters goes to a city that I’ve lived in, so I can’t imagine how excited I would be to see someone I know as the realtor 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
So cool!! It’s always so weird to see people that you know on tv!
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Mmm, I bet the peanuts added just the perfect amount of crunch to the bowl!
Sarah says
Ever since I learned that they’re already under contract, I’ve had a 95% success rate too! It’s interesting the subtle change in the language they use with the house they’ve already bought. For example, “That WILL be good for the dogs” instead of “that WOULD be good for the dogs.” Plus you can see it on their faces when they’re seeing a place for the first time or not.
I was totally bored with House Hunters until I discovered this fact and now it’s new and exciting for me to watch. It’s like a game show! Hahaha
mary @ minutespermile says
Love the black, white, and green combo!!
Chelsea says
That star is amazing! I want one. And even if your breakfast didn’t taste amazing, it sure looked pretty in that green bowl. Your really have an eye for color!
janet says
That’s so strange about the 1st trimester? Seems like when you posted it way back then there was some confusion, 5 – 10 minutes on the stove or 5 minutes of work w/the rice cooker? Thought you determined it didn’t save time until you stopped adding milk (several tries into it). Wonder why one task seemed more tiring? Pregnancy can be so weird! =)
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
how crazy!! i’m a bit house hunters obsessed — pretty sure i would faint if someone i knew was ever on it!
Becca says
I love House Hunters! I am also pretty good at guessing which house they will choose. I always hope
They will pick the house that I like the most 🙂
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
I need just about anything that’s “hands-free…” I got into a bad bike wreck on Monday 🙁
might not be in C’ville after all…
kris says
mmm yummy breakfast! I lovee my rice cooker and how convenient it is 🙂 I just found out that it can make mac and cheese! That’s been my number one on my ‘to try’ list, along with a frittatas and whole wheat sponge cake.
Kelly says
LOVE that black and white combo in the first pic!
Heidi Bundles Of Hugs says
Breakfast always looks good and nutritional yum! I love house hunters, I can usually guess which house is picked too. So cool you know someone who was on the show!
RunEatRepeat says
I saw that episode last night! I love your friend’s green dress 🙂
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
House Hunters is my jam! Sorry those oats didn’t come out so great.. they sure do look good!
Kristine says
Jessica was my realtor a few years ago when I sold my house in Davidson. She was also one of my 2nd Little girls when I was a hall counselor.
Ah, Davidson! Now bringing people together via HGTV. 😉
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Ugh.. gummy oats are the WORST!
jojo says
I’ve never made oats in a rice cooker.
I guess I’m not using my rice cooker to it’s fullest, all I do is cook rice!
Susan says
I am newly obsessed with House Hunters!
Kathryn says
Kath – I have some tough news. I too was obSESSED with House Hunters and HH-International… however, I recently learned that it’s at least 75% fake. A person can’t even apply to be on the show until they are under contract with one of the three houses. Then they just take them to two others and they pretend to select the one they’ve already bought. I couldn’t believe it, but I guess Ia always knew there was something fishy going on with the show…
KathEats says
I know 🙂 But knowing that hasn’t really affect the pleasure I get from watching – because they don’t always pick the empty house!
Kathryn says
Fair enough – I still watch sometimes too, but I can’t bring myself to do the multi-hour marathons like I used to 🙂
Cait's Plate says
I actually got into House Hunters from reading your blog! Haha. I sucked at guessing the right house at first but I’ve gotten pretty good at it now. LOVE that show – and so exciting that you actually knew someone on there!
Emily N says
Did you see the episode a few weeks ago in Birmingham MI? That was my cousin’s house that got picked! They recently moved to Columbus and had no idea that their house would even be on there! And then the lady was not so nice and so they are kind of disappointed that she bought it! How sad!
KathEats says
I don’t remember if I did or not! That is so cool though. I’ve always wondered about the owners whose houses get bashed by buyers.
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
So frustrating when a food you’ve been looking forward to does not turn out as you’d hoped.
Irina says
The first few minutes of the morning can be so tiring it is lovely to have gadgets to do the work for you :). I love my kitchen gadgets, couldn’t be without them! It may not taste as good but that oatmeal surely looks absolutely yummy! Love that paper star too.
Ashley @ Eat, Sleep, and Breathe It says
I love House Hunters! But I usually guess all the houses wrong because I always pick the most expensive ones!
elizabeth says
Did you ever try the steel cut oats with chia in the rice cooker? I know you like creamy oats and they turn out creamy the way that Emily makes them. I’ve been putting 3/4 c steel cut, 3c water and 1.5T chia in the rice cooker at night with timer set for morning, really creamy and good.
KathEats says
I should! My sister just gave me some steel cut. Usually the coach’s oats have the same texture though!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
my cousin is the voice of house hunters! i’ve never seen an episode though…
KathEats says
Suzanne wong?! No way!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
no my cousin is andromeda (more like a family friend) and she took over for suzanne wong. it’s just her voice!
KathEats says
Oh wow, they have a similar voice! Still super cool 🙂
Hannah says
Kath,
I made your whipped oats for breakfast just now with banana, strawberries, and almond butter. YUM, this was my first time and will not be my last! 🙂
Jessica says
Thanks for the shout-out, Kath! It was a wild experience to say the least. I’m so glad you all were able to catch the episode.
Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie says
Sad face that the oatmeal didn’t turn out. Did you do something different than usual?
