I have turned into the seventh dwarf: grumpy.
[I’m not all that grumpy because I am HOME (!!) but I had to carry on the blog title to describe today’s ripoffs]
First, the hotel was MUCH more expensive than we had budgeted due to a miscommunication in booking and room block confusion. Thus, we had to pay over $100 more than planned. Also, as we were checking out we spotted a whole room of free breakfast that we had no idea existed.
Worse things happen in life, for sure, but that was a double whammy surprise. At least I did spend most of my blogging this weekend raving about said expensive hotel!
We joined our friends for a coffee + breakfast excursion.
Ye ole town of Davidson, charming visitors since 1837
First stop was Summit Coffee for some liquid gold
Second stop was Bagel Bin, where there was a line out the door and a 30 minute wait. Our friends wanted to stay, so we did.
Snake took down his lox + cream cheese bagel.
Matt and I ordered sandwiches for our car ride home to go. Cost of 2 bagel sandwiches and 2 bagels to go: $16!!! Damn.
His was MASSIVE and loaded with meat! Look at it in my hand:
[TWSS]
My lox + cream cheese veggie bagel on pumpernickel
Do you see any lox!? I don’t see any lox. #TotalRipoff
Matt shared a few bites of his with me
And I ate a big ole apple
We never have bagels, so I got two to have with our meals this week: egg + spinach flavors!
The Saltine Challenge: GO MATT!
Did you see the KERF version? 6 saltines in 60 seconds. Anyone been successful?
Here’s Matt’s turn:
Uneventful 4.5 hour ride home. Very pretty scenery! I read Girl with the Dragon. Deep into it!
SO HAPPY TO BE HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
kelly says
TWSS – HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! 🙂
Camille says
Hahaha, oh Matt. He got pretty darn close!
Kristy @ KristyRuns says
Welcome home! Nothin’ better. 🙂
Nice try Matt, but Kath, you are definitely still the saltine champ!
Sorry about your many disappointments today (hotel room, lox), but you’re right, things can always be worse..
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Yikes, I hate when that stuff happens. Everything is relative, so even though worse thing can happen, these things are still rough (especially when you HAVE to stick to a budget). I am so glad you made it home and hopefully tonight will be peaceful! I see sardines in your future and lots of beans. That is how we balance out the heavy unexpected spending. Beans have become a delicacy here!
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
This saltine challenge fascinates me. I’ve heard tales, and now I’ve seen three videos in recent weeks. I think it’s time I participate in one of these challenges too.
Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat says
I was reading your tweets earlier about the bagel shop–I would have totally called afterward and complained! At least now you are home and can relax!
Felicity says
The saltine videos are totally mesmerizing! : )
Heather says
oh no! sorry about the hotel situation. I hate when stuff like that happens!
welcome home!
Lauren @ vegology says
Hahaha, I was thinking TWSS. . . and then I read it. Let me be the first to welcome you back to Central Virginia! Aren’t the leaves so beautiful to come home to?
Lauren says
I so want to try this saltine challenge. I need to round up some friends for it. Is it normal that I have no clue what lox is?
ging says
no Lauren, I had to google it too! http://irishjigs.blogspot.com/2010/01/what-is-lox-and-bagels.html
skinny latte says
I only knew what lox was thanks to reading The Babysitters Club when I was growing up 😛 ha ha.
Sucks when you fork out for stuff that doesn’t deliver – it makes me grumpy too. Hope you have a nice relaxing evening at home! 🙂
Jaya says
Kath, that’s a valid license to be grumpy! Just in case you ever pay a visit to Canada, be prepared because eating (well) is pretty darn pricey up here! Love the saltines challenge 🙂
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
What a bummer about the hotel. We were recently in DC and went to the “free” continental breakfast… and it ended u being a $50 breakfast buffet. Not fun.
Kim says
This comment has absolutely nothing to do with todays post BUT, I have to tell you that I saw Twin Oaks tofu at my Whole foods this week (in Cleveland Ohio), and the name sounded familiar. I looked at where it was made which prompted me to remember I saw it on here, and that you had said good things about it. Best tofu ever, hands down. Its not so local for me, but I’m hooked.
Kath says
🙂 Did you have the herby kind!?
Kim says
Just plain. Herby is up next for sure.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
Grrrrr!
j says
Ahhh, live & learn, as we have all done whilst traveling through our beautiful country! Welcome home, there’s nothing like the feel & smell of your own bed! Sweet dreams….
stacey-healthylife says
Wow that sucks, especially the bagel sandwich. How do you miss such an important piece????
Laurie says
Ha Ha, sorry Matt! Kath you rock 🙂
Cara Craves... says
I hate having to spend too much money when I don’t really have to.
You are allowed to by grumpy!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
What a bummer about the bagel! I would hate to settle for a bagel with cream cheese when I was expecting lox on there!
At least you’re home now. Hope you’re enjoying it! 😀
Susan says
Sorry about the ripoffs! I totally would be grumpy too! 🙂
Dorry says
I bet you are sooo glad to be home! I would have been pretty grumpy about having to pay more for the hotel…and the missed free breakfast. With all the traveling we do, those breakfasts come in handy for the budget. I’m sure you will have an awesome week in the comfort of your own home with big bowls of oats and bike rides. 🙂
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) says
$100?! I don’t blame you for being grumpy. At least you got a good price one your lunch + bagels!
The saltine challenge looks fun. I could see some people training for that. Building their jaw muscles so they can chew faster!
Joy says
Mmmm bagels…and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Well, that and I am on a extremely low carb diet so those pictures about had me licking my computer screen 🙁 Oh, and sorry about the hotel room. Did you stick to your ground? Since the economy is tight, you would be amazed at what kind of discounts and freebies you can get if you are just persistent enough 😉
Kath says
Girl go get yourself some carbs! Why are you on a low-carb diet?
We tried sticking our ground, but there was nothing they could do because it was booked through a travel agency 🙁 (Not by us)
Andy says
It feels so wonderful to get home after a trip! Glad you had a good time on your ventures and that you’re home safe and sound. Question… I’m loving your nail polish color. I bought some silver but it looks a little too Vegas for me. Do you remember the brand and color on your nails by chance?
Kath says
I don’t, but you can see what the bottle looked like in this post if you might recognize the brand:
https://www.katheats.com/action-relaxing/
Susan says
The bottles with the white handles are Essie.
Andy says
I’ll check out some Essie colors and see if I can find one I like. Thanks ladies!
Hannah says
Honestly? $16 for 2 bagels sandwiches and 2 bagels would be standard, or even cheap, here in Australia! So you can maybe be kinda less upset, if you think of it that way 😉 Plus, I’ve never seen pumpernickel bagels here, so score another for you!
Lily says
Did you look upstairs at Summit? The current art exhibit is all on MagnaDoodles! I was actually just in Davidson LAST weekend, and it’s so funny to see your pictures from the same places. I was never a Davidson student, but my best friend was, and my boyfriend’s father is a math professor there. I have spent many a weekend and holiday in Davidson over the years!
Kath says
Oh fun! I didn’t go upstairs. Davidson’s such a wonderful place!
Simply Life says
oh no, sorry for the ripoffs- I hate when that happens!
Heidi - apples under my bed says
V annoying about your hotel. I hope they were apologetic about not telling you about the free breakfast!!
I cant read in the car, I wish I could. I get car sick if I read. It would make trips so much more enjoyable and productive!
Heidi xo
KatieTX says
I literally laughed out loud at your twss. It really is a huge bagel though!!!
faith @ gracefulfitness says
Lox is the best part of a bagel!
Erica D says
At least the egg bagel will be excellent! When I did swim team during elementary school summers, my mom would always arrive at the end of practice for lunch, toting toasted, buttery egg bagels for me and my sister. It was heaven!
Maddie (Healthy Maddie) says
Sorry about the ripoffs, I hate when that happens. Funny saltine challenge video!
Christin@purplebirdblog says
NO LOX?! I would’ve been pisssssssssed! 🙁
Jillian@ Reshape Your Life says
That video is hilarious!! I love it.
It’s a shame about all the let downs though. At least your HOME!!
