Afternoon on the beach, yo!
Great, great weather!
The boys played an epic game of bocci ball, making up different versions like “eyes closed” and “backwards” and “feet only.”
I did more reading and some general relaxin’
And some Wheat Thin eating when I started to get really hungry around 5:30
When we came inside, I decided to get all the sand off in a BATH!! The tub in our bathroom is incredible and I had a great soak! It is my DREAM to have a bathroom someday with a separate soaking tub. Our 1960s tub combo just isn’t comfortable or big enough. My only question for you bath takers is: how do you wash your hair in a tub? It’s the only big drawback – I often stand up to take a quick shower at the end just to wash my hair.
The beach at sunset tonight was gorgeous
I’ve been taking engagement photos in the evening light : )
We celebrated the engagement with some champagne. They got out 7 glasses and poured a full one and even handed it out to me before I reminded everyone champagne is not exactly the baby’s preferred beverage ; ) I made a wonderful lemonade spritzer with lime in my glass instead.
I took a few photos of my own as well! The show must go on…26 weeks!
Karen’s Snakey has made so many appearances in drawers, bathtubs and cabinets. He scares me every time!
Tonight was Matt and my night to cook and we made a traditional low country boil! Find the recipe here!
We brought Andouille sausage made by The Rock Barn in Charlottesville and cooked it up with Carolina shrimp, fresh corn and red potatoes. Plus lots of Old Bay!
We used a GIANT pot that took two to drain!
Yummmm!
Old Bay pile
Green beans on the side
And a mug of ice cream (Neapolitan!) to end the sweet day! Larbs and Matt taught me how to watch The Bachelorette. I’ve never seen it (or the male version) but I hear it’s in Charlotte so that might make it more exciting!?
G’night!
Angel7 says
If I take a bath, I always end it with a shower to finish washing myself and hair. I cannot take a bath without washing my hair, because I do not feel clean.

Rebecca @ Blueberry Smiles says
I would love a bathtub like that too. Looks so relaxing! Your pregnancy pics with Matt are adorable!
Molly @ RDexposed says
I like seeing your beach dinners. Pretty creative considering you’re on vacay!
kristen @ verbs and vignettes says
mmm, old bay. since I stopped eating meat, and my beloved crabs, I’ve found out that old bay is delicious on French fries (maybe with a little American cheese on top). clearly a much healthier substitute for crabs. hahaha. but it does the trick every once in a while.
taught you how to watch the bachelor. that cracked me up. I guess someone will have to teach me at some point. I might be the only one still not into it!
Stephanie says
Old Bay on popcorn or pasta with alfredo sauce is delish too!
Sana says
Karen has so many pranks lol!!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
That last picture of you and Matt and the bump may be the cutest thing EVER!!
Matt says
Also notable in our bocci game were “Down on one knee, “Skipping on the surf,” and our favorite – Par 2 shots!

My mom only takes baths, she has faucet/hand held shower combo like this…….

Bev says
Are you aware it is not good to wash your hair everyday ? You just relax in the bath……that’s really what there for !!!
KathEats says
I must!! My hair looks gross even 12 hours after a washing sometimes
Celeste says
My hair also looked super gross after 12 hours, and the solution is to wash it less. I would sometimes even wash it twice in less than 24 hours, and it wouldn’t look ok – even without product. Now, I go at least one full day between washings (wash before church Sunday, wear in bun Monday, wash Tuesday after morning workout). So much less greasy, so much less fuss and stress. I also lost a TON of hair after pregnancy/weaning and this abbreviated washing schedule has helped with that as well. Just food for thought!
Bev says
I agree with her…healthy hair makes a happy mom !!!
Lena says
That’s because you’ve stripped it of its natural oils from all the washing.
KathEats says
It’s because I have fine oily hair
lorrie says
My hair is just like that but you can train it…I swear! Pick some time when you don’t have any social plans and try it..it really works. It stops producing so much oil. Same about losing hair. Your hormones will plummet after you have the baby and the hair will fall out. It will adjust eventually so do not panic.
Katie says
I’m in the same boat Kath, I have baby fine, uber oily hair. I’ve tried weaning off of shampooing as often to see if it would make me less oily- but it didn’t work. It was nasty (both times I tried it after friends insisted it would work… friends with very different hair than mine). Some people really just do produce more oil than others and have to wash it every day!! Have you ever tried the Klorane dry shampoo? It’s an awesome product for us oily-haired ladies- I can use in a pinch when I don’t have time to wash/dry. It’s a powder, not an aerosol, and I absolutely love it.
KathEats says
I haven’t, but sounds like a great idea when the baby comes! I’m lucky my hair takes no effort to “style” so washing it often is not a big deal
Sarah says
I with with you guys, I have super fine hair that if i don’t wash daily, is so oily! Not washing… Ive tried, it didn’t work for me. Thanks for the tip Katie, I will pick up some of that dry shampoo!
Shannon Bell says
the belly is so cute! and it’s even cuter w you and matt together 🙂
tam says
Kath, years ago we lived in an apartment with no shower, so every day was a bath. I just shampooed my hair, laid down in the tub and swished the suds out. No problem 🙂
Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
tam says
p.s. Before shampooing, I laid down in the water to wet my hair (that’s probably obvious).
Jennifer says
Your Dad needs to get some flops! Tennis shoes are not allowed on the beach 😉
KathEats says
Haha… He had been walking!
Amy says
Just some bachelotette trivia…Alejandro is one of the founders of the back to roots mushroom kit. http://backtotheroots.com/our-story
KathEats says
Oh wow!! Did he make it to the next round?
Khushboo says
I always have to stand up & shower after a bath otherwise I still feel dirty!
Natasha says
We only have a bathtub in our house, no shower. I just keep a plastic cup in the bathtub and use it to get fresh water from the faucet for washing and rinsing.
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
I used to live 1/4 mile to the north of your first beach shot! I know that EXACT house. Memories. And I used to eat Wheat Thins or Triscuits in the afternoon (with a drink in hand, too) 🙂 on that beach!
KathEats says
To the north is the camping area.. Or were you right by the pier?
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Okay maybe a little north of that. We were just north of the Holiday Inn!
Kathi says
Wash your hair in the bath first before adding any bubbles, then you can relax. 🙂
This is the only season of The Bachelorette I have wanted to watch, love it so far.
Karen says
When I was a kid, I would get on my knees at the end of bath, shampoo & rinse hair with a cup under the running faucet (all while the bath water was draining out). The trick is standing up without slipping. I’d probably put a bath mat in the tub if I had to do it today. Not that I could get on my knees..who am I kidding? ; – )
Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles says
Mmmm! Corn on the cob is one of my all-time favorite summer foods!
brandee says
We don’t have a bath so an outside shower is what we use, but I can’t complain! Karen’s pranks would scare me to death…I hate snakes!
Michelle@PeachyPalate says
Another fantastic beachy day that I’m jealous of but I’m more jealous of the wheat thins…you can’t them in Ireland!
janet says
I always take a super-quick shower PRE-bath to wash my hair. I figure during rinsing the suds running down clean me well enough that when I then stretch out in the bubble bath (a fave relaxing ritual) I am not just sitting in a tub of my own sweat/dirt water. I don’t think of baths as a way to get clean so much as a way to relax & soothe. Bubbles + glass of wine + few candles, a weekly calming treat!
KathEats says
Good idea!
erica says
hahaha, karen’s pranks are cracking me up! i think i would’ve fallen for them all!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Looks like a wonderful day at the beach! And I love the snake! We used to do things like that on big vacations
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Looks like a fun day!
Karen says
Love the engagement photo series, and the last two shots of Matt inspecting your belly…I feel like I’ve had a vicarious beach vacation w/your lovely family thanks to your photography skills (and well, temps in 90’s these past few days and a lots of time spent at the lake – MIchigan – helped too!)
Yay for summer!
p.s. I really want to be a bath person, but alas, I am just not. I am patience-challenged and so I find them impractical!
Allison says
Your sister is beautiful! She looks like she should be in a noxema ad or something.
KathEats says
Noxzema ad!? Haha.
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
I have always wanted to try a ‘Country Boil’! It just looks so darn yummy! Can you believe I have never tried Old Bay seasoning..I hear about it all the time but have yet to venture to buy it! Looks amazing…great photos…drool worthy!
Roxanne says
Mr. Booger man, now the snake… lots of surprises!
Donna says
The Bachelorette was filmed not far from our house! It was crazy, especially one night when there were very loud helicopters twirling overhead (in our normally quiet residential area) until the wee hours! I tried watching the show last week, but just don’t get the appeal.
KathEats says
Oh fun! Guessing you’re in CLT? I wonder where she lives and where this mansion is!
donna says
Yes, I’m in South Charlotte in the Blakeney area. The house is on Marvin Rd. (near Ardrey Kell Rd.) It’s very out of place. It’s gated–and surrounded by a horse farm and plenty of subdivisions with new homes in the $300-600k range. Here is a story that explains why they filmed it here. It includes a video, if you want to see the house/grounds:
http://www.zillow.com/blog/2012-03-06/report-abcs-the-bachelorette-home-chosen-in-charlotte-nc
The story mentions filming in Charleston, but they meant Charlotte!
KathEats says
Oh wow, cool!
chris says
So glad you guys have avoided this pre-season hurricane that hit FL! And love your seafood boil dinner, clean, simple food all cooking in one pot, my idea of clean-up heaven!! btw, I mentioned KERF this morning in my blog, after reading about you in O magazine yesterday 🙂 And I’m glad to know about Karen’s practical joke side, tell her I am now on alert!
http://mountainmornings.wordpress.com/2012/05/29/triple-dare-you/
KathEats says
Haha you should definitely be on high alert!! That snake has scared me 100 times!
occula says
My parents had only a tub and no shower till they remodeled after I was grown and out of the house! This is not a move for the pregnant, but I think I remember just turning over and kneeling in the tub and washing my hair under the faucet at the end – or else lying back in the tub and rinsing lying down! Ugh, I think all this is why I never, ever, ever take a bath as an adult. Mostly, though, I washed my hair bending over the kitchen sink! – because I had a bath at night, but always washed my hair in the morning for school.
Andrea says
Matt & Matt’s variations made me laugh… my friends and I have often done the exact same thing playing frisbee.. left-handed, swirl around once before throwing, left-handed & eyes closed. Haha fun times
Blessing {Working Mom Journal} says
Goodness, that picture of Matt listening to the baby bump, so cute!!! Seems like you all had a great time.
Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See says
Baths are all sorts of awesome! I do the same thing though with showering at the end 😉
Ashley @ Hudson on the Potomac says
Your low country boil looks great!!! Glad you’re having fun!
kate says
I thought that you were okay with a few sips of wine? I would have a small glass about once a month in my second and third trimester — sometimes it is nice to just sip!
Allegra says
My favorite versions of bocce are “offroad bocce” – played in a rocky, overgrown meadow – and “non-dominant bocce,” with your nondominant hand. The second version is hilarious.
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
saw this newly updated sunscreen guide from EWG and thought of you! it’s informative and comprehensive and a big improvement over last year’s version! Hope you like it! http://breakingnews.ewg.org/2012sunscreen/best-sunscreens/best-beach-sport-sunscreens/
KathEats says
Cool! Thanks!
Jeri says
I know I’m late, but is that Matt’s brother? They look like they are related
Zoe @ loseweightandgainhealth says
We have taps with a hand held shower attached. Most baths in England are like that so you lie back to wash your hair and then rinse under the hand held shower. Alternatively, bathe Japanese style – have a shower FIRST so you are clean and then relax in the bath – a wonderful way to relax 🙂
