Gosh this morning was such a rush. I was late for the gym because I was busy answer>ing blog questions so I wouldn’t have to at work today. And the wireless on my new laptop isn’t working so we were trying to fix it during breakfast. Bad idea. NOTHING infuriates me more than broken internet. Seriously. UGGGG. Anyways, then I missed the lightrail by 10 seconds and had to stand longer in the 20* weather 🙁 And the husband and I didn’t get a romantic goodbye, which makes me sad since he’ll be out when I get home tonight.
But I did have a great workout this morning!! Elliptical for 40 minutes plus upper body weights using resistance bands and body bars. And the ab roller! I love that little thing 🙂 426 kcal burned.
Toast with PB before I left:
Breakfast was rolled oats simmered in half milk, half water. They were a perfect combo of creamy and chewy! Topped with banana, walnuts, flax, cinnamon and PB:
Plus coffee…
Total breakfast calories (including toast): 540.
Oat Comparison
Same calories, same bowl.
Steel cut (L) = 160 grams.
Rolled (R) = 235 grams.
Interesting!!!

Hey Kath,
I'm hoping you can give me a bit of advice about an injury (I read about your knee problems). I've been struggling with a neck injury for the last six months. I'll back off with exercise (I was doing very vigorous yoga 5 days a week), and it will get better enough that I'll jump back into the routine, and exacerbate the problem. How did you handle holding yourself back until you were healed? It feels like the most frustrating thing ever!
Thanks!
Mikell

Penny,
The clear bowl is one from a set of mixing bowls from Williams-Sonoma. I LOVE these mixing bowls! The green one I use a lot is from Pier 1, and all our our white bowls are Pottery Barn Great While collect (thank you wedding gifts!)
Mikell,
Well, I don't think I can give a good answer here because when I was injured I was overweight! It wasn't until after my surgery that I got my life back in line. In some ways I blame my (foot) injury on my weight gain because it forced me to stop running and I didn't know of any other high intensity exercise, so I put on the pounds (AND ate too much). But I think if I went through it again I would have much more knowledge on how to watch portions and would make much more of an effort to find activities I could do like swimming (which I did do some during my 2 years off of running), spinning classes (I didn't have access in college), or other forms of exercise.
But what's most important when you can't exercise as much as you want is to keep your diet as healthy as possible and keep a stricter eye on portions. This is the biggest reason I gained – lack of intense exercise PLUS a poor diet of large portions and too much college drinking!
Having to hold back from exercise is very, very frustrating, but with a focus on fresh, healthy foods, it should be easier to keep your weight in control.
Hope that helps answer your question?

Hey Kath,
I love peanut butter but for some reason can't get it to mix with my hot oats- it just ends up being dragged around as a bunch. I've tried taking the natural kind and mixing- but it was a no go. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Kath says
Natalie,
Read the part on this post about how I eat my peanut butter oatmeal! The secret is leaving it on the spoon so you get a little with every bite. It's a little messy, but tastes the best!

Did you use CalorieKing when you started your weight loss journey? Did you have trouble with going over your net calories when you first started? I started using it almost a week ago and everyday I have been above by about 100 calories. I am hoping that it will get easier once I have been doing to a little longer.
Trish says
Oh, that is how you do it. I mixed my pb with my oatmeal before I cooked it. It worked and I got my pb mixed through the whole thing.
Kath says
Trish,
I started using CalorieKing about 5 months into my weight loss. Going over NET is common, but remember you can be over one day and under the next day to just make your weekly average calories equal your NET. Just curious, what do you have it set on? This is why exercise is so important! I can't eat only 1226 calories or I'd starve so I have to get some form of movement in every day – even if it's just a 30 minute walk. When I do take days off, I usually plan to be over NET by about 200.

The rolled oats look better to me too.. I can’t say I’ve tried steel cut, but I don’t mind the “mush”, so to speak. Oatmeal is also a favorite breakfast of mine! =)

CK set it to 1200 automatically. I run between 30 min to an hour everyday and burn about 300 – 600 calories.

It does answer my question! Thanks, Kath.
