I feel like one this week – go go go go go go.
Never made it to that Epsom salt bath last night. In fact, I’d say I only actually take a bath when I say I’m going to on the blog about 25% of the time. I always run out of time and get stuck doing blog work right up to bedtime!
Maybe tonight…
Breakfast in your favorite bowl!
I get more questions about this bowl than any others. It’s from Homegoods (a mish mosh of brands) and is made by 222 Fifth by PTS International. Whatever that means!
I wanted a no-cook breakfast today so I made a yogurt mess:
- 3/4 cup Organic Valley Yogurt – Berry (the rest!)
- ~1/2 serving Kashi Cinnamon Harvest
- ~1/4 cup Hemp Plus Granola
- Chia seeds
- Coconut
- Half banana
- Pecans
- TJ’s Valencia PB drizzle
Lots of crunch!
Rising Moon tea in My Tea Spot Tuffy steeper
Imagine the overstimulation of my nervous system when I encountered ANOTHER ROACH this morning. And this time he FLEWWWWWWW at me when I tried to spray him. OMG. So not a calming morning two days in a row. I really don’t need roaches on top of everything right now!
I’m going to have Matt pull the couch back. These are palmetto bugs, not roaches technically, so they don’t infest your house. They just come in. My mom swears they come in pairs – husbands and wives – which does make me sad to have to exterminate them myself. But they should just keep their romance in my yard and not in my house! I am unbelievably claustrophobic and that’s why roaches INSIDE make me crazy.
[Note I saved this encounter for after the food for those of you with light hearts!]
Off to work.
Emily Eats and Exercises says
So sorry about your roach problem. Eeeww. Though the idea of husband and wife roaches is a little cute. 😉
I love that tea steeper. I have to get back into loose teas. As a non-coffee drinker it’s fun to have something to drink when I “go out for coffee” with friends.
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
What an adorable tea steeper!! I love loose leaf teas 🙂
Lea says
I know what you mean about the palmetto bugs! I’m a coastal NC native but have spent the last 3 years in Michigan where they have almost NO bugs…but I’m back in NC for the summer (at the beach) and I’ve already had THREE inside the house within 1.5 weeks. Now I’m having difficulty trying to calm down at night to sleep 🙁
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oh dear, sounds like you have quite the roach problem!! It reminds me of Men In Black, the film – I’ve no idea why…:s
Have a good day!! And I hope you get your bath in tonight!!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Oh Kath, sorry about such a non-relaxing morning of roaches. Ugh…feel your pain.
Hope the rest of your day can manage to slow down and relax a bit! 😀
Marisa (Loser for Life) says
That bowl is so gorgeous!
Ugh, roaches in the morning (or anytime for that matter) are not so gorgeous 😉
Mrs. Money says
What a way to start your day! 🙁 I’d squish them.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Roaches fly??? Eeeek.
Wei-Wei says
I second Jessica’s comment, and add this: *incredulously* Roaches fly??? That’s gross! Bugs are gross! [barf]
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Those things are HUGE too! Sorry for the encounter this morning…again! I would say it would be safer to eat outside! The mess looks delicious…I do love a delicious mess. Have a great day and take some time for the bath! You will be glad you did!
Amelia says
OMG I hate palmetto bug season! I can tell when it is time to spray around the house when I find one or two inside. Even with a super clean house, they still come in! The only thing we have found to work is to buy a bug spray that you are supposed to spray around the perimeter of the outside of the house as well as around the doors and windows on the outside of the house. The next day you walk out and you can find dead ones all around, but at least they are outside and not INSIDE.
The only kind of spray that has worked for us is the cheapest gallon of outdoor bug spray at Lowes. It is clear and comes with a spray nozzle/hose that you put in the pre-mixed solution and simply spray. I’ll try to get the name.
Breakfast looks yummy as always. 🙂
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
AHHH FLYING ROACH!!! Terrible. What a nightmare. My ex-boyfriends place was infested with roaches and they would be crawling on the WALLS and he didn’t even care! He’d name them in an attempt to be funny. It makes me gag just thinking about it. Ew!
Whitney @ Lettuce Love says
Ewwww bugs! Not a fun way to start the day, that’s for sure.
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
I HATE palmetto bugs…..they are SO big and scary!
Christina says
Ugh I feel your pain. I have plugs on all my drains because that’s how they get into my apartment. They freak me out so much!
Susan says
I just had breakfast but now I am SO having a yogurt mess for lunch!
The bugs are infesting my house too! It’s like a house party for stinkers over here.
ari says
omg palmetto bugs are the worst. and they’re everywhere in florida.
at least you don’t have rats! my mom just got over a rat infestation. SO GROSS.
Lisa says
That is so gross! I remember once in the middle of the night I was going to use the bathroom and as soon as I sat… COCKROACH! OMG I almost had a panic attack. Diiiisgusting!

shannon (the daily balance) says
well at least (hopefully!) you got the roaches OVER WITH for the day!
Allison says
I live in SC – we too are home to many a palmetto bug. In fact, in downtown Charleston at night during the summer, your feet actually crunch as you walk down the sidewalks there are so many of them. Maybe it’s a good thing you didn’t end up here with the bakery franchise after all!
Elaine says
oh my god i hate hate HATE those palmetto bugs! i jump and squeal like a little girl everytime i see one of them FLYING at me! just thinking of them gives me goosebumps!
kalli@fitandfortysomething says

Evelyn @ cheers2healthy says
Yeeecchhhhh roaches! To think that they come in pairs gives me the willies!
KatieTX says
Oh large flying bugs..one of the many perks about living in the South. My parents found a snake in our living room back in April!
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
It seems like everyone has had a crazy busy week. I can’t remember the last time I was looking forward to the weekend quite this much.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
When I was in Hilton Head last summer, we had palmetto bugs come in ALL. THE. TIME. Once I spotted on 3 inches long. No one wanted to deal with it (it was dead) so it sat there for awhile. AHHHHHH!
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
Roaches would drive me crazy, too!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
Another one?! Eeks. I don’t think I could stand the flying part.
kate says
That is a gorgeous bowl! Enjoy your Friday!
Stacy Grows Healthy says
Good news that you aren’t infested. My apt’s dishwasher was loaded with them -eewww. Needless to say, I only stayed in the apt for 9 months and never used the dishwasher.
Heather says
When I lived in Georgia, I encountered many a flying palmetto bug.
I think they are one of the nastiest things alive. I hope you’ve seen all the palmetto bugs you will see this spring!
Kate says
Kath – Love your blog. I saw on your tribute to oatmeal page that you sometimes add eggs to your oatmeal. Do you cook eggs in the oatmeal? Or just pile them on top?? Sounds good…I wanted to try it.
-Kate Peter
Kath says
In the tribute, I cooked the oats separately. But sometimes I stir in an egg to the oats themselves at the beginning of cooking.
Fitcetera says
My name is Karen and I want your mug … and your table … hand them over!
That is a very cool tea strainer. I haven’t seen one like it before. I want that too!
Keep the roaches, please. 🙂
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
Love that tea steeper! So cute!
Ashley says
Hilarious…I have a bowl from Home Goods as well that everyone always asks where it’s from 🙂 Guess I should look there more often! I hope you get some time to relax at some point this weekend. At least you got in a good yoga sesh yesterday! Love the craziness IN your bowl this AM!!
Jenny D. says
I totally know what you mean about those roaches! We just moved into our new house and it has a hot tub on a deck. As fabulous as that is, my husband informed me that because of the deck and palm trees back there, we’re going to see more palmetto roaches, too! The other night, we were getting out of the hot tub and my husband said, “Oh! This one just flew at me!” To which I replied – “They don’t fly!?!” Then, right as I was spraying it with bug killer (I swear I’m “green” everywhere else), it FLEW AT MY FACE. I squealed like a girl, dropped the spray and ran over to our other back door. Horrible… I’m so sorry that’s how your morning started off, Kath. Couldn’t have been relaxing :/
Camille says
That is, indeed, a gorgeous bowl… to hold a gorgeous breakfast!
Johanna B says
I grew up in New Orleans where we also had the flying kind of roaches. I hated them more than I’ve ever hated anything. We called them tree roaches cuz they seemed to come from the huge magnolia trees in front of our house. We also occasionally saw river rats (they’re BIG) cuz we only lived a few blocks from the wharves along the Mississippi River.
loreejo says
feelin’ your pain on the palmetto bugs from when we used to live in south GA. they are the creepiest bugs ever and i didn’t know they flew until one torpedoed me on the porch swing one night. it took all the calm and cool out of the screened-in front porch!
Dynamics says
Can you not spray the perimeter of your house to keep them from coming in? I have a pest control service and that is what he does monthly or every other month. Not to scare you, but I tell my pest guy, if I see two bugs, you HAVE to come back and spray cause two bugs can make babies and I do not pay you to let them have babies. Good luck.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I hear you on getting so busy that you don’t get around to doing things. I do that almost every day.
zoe says
i have the same cup! only with a Z on it 🙂 it’s such a great mug. i love your bowls and cups and plates! so much fun.
Michelle says
mmm those oats look aweeesome. You’re the only person who can continue to motivate me to eat hot oats when it’s super warm outside. hahaha 🙂
I’m giving about 2 jars of organic preserves and immediately thought of you and your love for Crofters! I promise Food for Thought jams are waaaaaayyyy better! Strawberry basil preserves or blueberry merlot jam strike your fancy?
Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary says
I think I would scream like the dickens if a roach flew at my face!
Amber K says
I have never seen a roach or any other bug except maybe a spider in my apartment. That sounds SOOO gross!
Pat Kilmain says
I love my Tea Spot steeper. But they discontinued one of my favorite teas – vanilla latte which was a black tea. 🙁 Still drinking Bolder Breakfast on a regular basis though.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i love pecans in my oatmeal – my favorite nut!
Following Julie says
Technically, palmetto bugs ARE roaches. They just call them palmetto bugs to make you feel better. Just like they’re called waterbugs in NY. They’re the American Cockroach. I’m a Floridian so I know my bugs. =)
Kelly says
Ewww! I’m with you. Roaches and Palmetto bugs are so gross. One crawled across my foot at Myrtle Beach one time and I almost had a heart attack.
Corey says
I’ve been wanting to suggest something for your morning oatmeal that I do sometimes to add a little extra protein to my day- smash up a chunk of tofu into a paste of sorts and then add it to your cooking oatmeal. I usually microwave my oatmeal because of time in the mornings, so I add the tofu before I heat it up, it makes the oats very creamy and I never taste the tofu!
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I hate insects, but I feel terrible killing them. 🙁 We put them outside if we can.
That bowl is pretty, I think I saw similar ones in Macy’s.
Jenn
Kilee says
I feel lucky because there are no real big bugs where I live. I did experience cockroaches and centipedes while living on Maui – yuck!
Laura says
I am a Floridian transplanted to Chicago. The one and only thing I don’t miss about Florida are the darned Palmetto bugs! They make my skin crawl. They are too cockroaches–giant, flying cockroaches! Eeeewwww!
BroccoliHut says
Haha, I must say you have good taste, Kath–I have a set of four of those exact same bowls:) Also purchased at Homegoods, aka the best store on the planet.
Kelly says
i have the same bowls! and matching plates=)
Hannah says
Nope, the Buddha bowl is definitely my favourite! I’ve never seen aything like it in my life, and it hurts that I can’t have it shipped internationally!
