Good afternoon girls and guys! This has been one of those days where it feels like 11am and it’s almost 4. (Probably after 4 if you’re reading this!) I was sucked into technology this morning thanks to HP’s new Sprout computer.
I started my day with this!!
Can you see that there are real steel cut oats on your screen? Reach out and touch them! The HP Sprout is a computer of the future, and it has an amazing scanner that lets you scan objects right onto your screen. You can then select the object and enlarge, move, edit, etc. all around the canvas mat. Then you can add MORE images, text, decorations and things. I’ve been a lover of HP computers for many years, so I am thrilled to be able to test out the frontier of HP’s technology. There are several videos on Sprout’s website that will show you all it can do!
{The rainbow lines are a result of me mixing camera + scanner. They aren’t there in real life!}
There’s a real keyboard and a virtual keyboard. And the Sprout is a real Windows computer underneath.
While I was setting up the computer, Mazen was at preschool doing some art of his own <3
We hit up the playground for some fresh air before heading home.
And then I had a late lunch – leftover curry from our Cook Smarts dinner last night!
I scanned in my turmeric for a little jazz and wrote the text right on with my fingers.
Cool huh!!! What other sorts of projects should I try next? I think this would make a pretty cool recipe canvas with all of the ingredients spread out and labeled.
I left little M playing with his toys for naptime. He’s now sound asleep. Man, I’m taking a moment to be thankful he’s a good napper!

I don’t usually comment, unless there’s a giveaway, but those are some visually arresting photos!
And may I please have the curry recipe? it looks so good. I ate Trader Joe’s frozen version yesterday.

Thanks!
The recipe is Cook Smarts – let me ask Jess if I can share
KathEats says
She said yes! Hope this link works : )

Good idea!!

Brill! It is it tricky to set up? I’m not at all technically minded!
KathEats says
Not at all, but I had a tutorial from an HP guy!

The meals all look so delicious and those sprouts sound very interesting.
Btw your son is very cute 🙂
I have just posted a DIY cooking tutorial on how to make paneer cheese. I would appreciate to hear your opinion about it!

I’m another who saw this computer on the Fitnessista site. It looks like a cool idea but I think the technology still has a ways to go based on what I’ve seen of the finished results as compared to graphics made with a traditional computer/ graphic software setup. It does look fun to play around with.

Hi Kath,
Very interesting post!
I just want to say “thank you” for all the cool things I’ve learned about through reading your blog. You have so many great ideas about nutrition, places to visit and vacation, new technology, fashion. and fun ideas for the kiddos (I’m a teacher)! And so much more. I love seeing the great pictures of your family. too. 🙂
KathEats says
Thank you!

where did you find the peppa pig figures? My little guy is obsessed!

Hi Kath, this is interesting but I’m a bit confused from your post about how it all works. I read and reread a couple of times but it’s still not clear whether this a scanner, or a tablet, or more like a laptop or PC unit with some kind of attachment. (Or something else?) How big is it? (You don’t seem to have a picture of it on its own and it’s hard to get a sense of scale or what it looks like.)
A couple of other questions: how does it connect to your other devices? If it’s a PC-type unit (you say “computer”), how portable is it? Is the scanning process like taking a picture or more like a traditional scanner? What kind of resolution do you get? Storage capacity? Thanks in advance!!
KathEats says
It’s a traditional Windows 8 computer with a big fancy scanner on top and a creative mat below.
Check out Sprout.Com for all of the technical specs!
Gina also did a video with hers so you can see the size and shape. Its really big! http://fitnessista.com/2014/12/i-heart-my-new-hp-sprout/

Thanks Kath. After reading Gina’s review it makes WAY more sense to me.

Kath, as the blog continues to evolve and chsnge, I know you’re constantly seeking feedback. I love your cooksmart recipes and RD guest posts but I’ve commented on the sponsored posts before. I thought the General Mills posts were such a perfect fit for you, especially with regard to your visit there and many followup posts. I love the post about growing oatmeal! Other posts have felt “off.” This post is one of them. I love what the sprout can do and Gina’s post was helpful but when you write a sponsored post, shouldn’t it be thouroughly reviewed by you? I love the turmeric scan but don’t understand what kind of technology made it or if I need a tutorial or how it pertains to the blog. You ask for project suggestions using the sprout. How about a multi-post series? One post to explain how you scammed the turmeric. Another post on how you make an infographic with recipe and a scan of your meal, etc. The sprout sounds like it helped Gina save time on her posts, so maybe this would help you do a fast post along with your regular content, not taking too much time away from your overall focus. Just a few thoughts. This technology has so much potential!

Hi Micki, I always imagine what my readers will think when I’m writing a sponsored post. For this one, I wanted to keep it more focused on the product and asked myself: How can the Sprout enhance my food photos and presentation? I assumed that most of you are more interested in food and lifestyle and less interested in the technology of how I created a graphic. You prove to differ! I feel like I can never win sometimes 🙂 Had I just wrote about the tech side of things, I feared many people would wonder how it fit into a food and lifestyle blog. I will be doing another post on the Sprout and will focus more on the tech side of things next time since many of you seem to want to know more.

Sprout sounds amazing! The possibilities are endless!

I feel like a fool, but I’m still not sure what the HP Sprout is? Is it a computer, or a laptop, or a tablet? Is it something you plug into your own computer? I’d love to hear more about it!

Wow I have never seen the Sprout before… it looks really cool though!
Annie says
WOW this is cool! I heard about Sprout from a friend, actually, and I love what you created. I am hoping to get one in the near future because I think it will really help with my small business.
PS. You said in the post it was a computer with a scanner – and that’s exactly what it is! I’m not sure why people are so confused. Perhaps they should just click the links to the website and videos you provided! xoxo

Man this is cool!!! The oats do look so lifelike. I love how you used it to explain more about your dishes.

I think you got to spend some time getting to know the technology, and we didn’t! I literally have no idea what the sprout is – and I thought sprout.com was a kids TV network up until now! Is that not a thing anymore? Idk, my daughter is 10 🙁 She used to LOOOOVE sprout.
Anyway, Kath, I’m not into tech, I’m not going to go research it, but I have you on my blog follow – I depend on you for this stuff! LOL Next time, can you pretend I’m in kindergarden and explain from there? I’d love to hear about new products from your perspective. I’m terrible… My 10 year old literally would know intuitively how to do all of this, and here I am begging for more info! 😀 Pics look cute, anyway. Was that your spice jar or did you find it on sprout?
