Back home on the range!!
Today’s 3.25 hour trip went by fast. Only one bathroom stop was required. Snacks supplied ample energy!
I packed pretzels, clementines (3) and a PB&J to keep me going. I guess this was lunch? Grazed throughout the trip.
Whole Grain Goodness with GH jam and Nuttzo
Peeled clementines make an excellent car snack! And pretzels taste SO good when you’re bored!
Here is a tidbit about life: I used to, ok I still, hate getting gas. I hate the break in the forward motion of a trip. But most of all I hate getting my clean hands dirty on the gross nozzle.
One winter, I had a special pair of gloves that I kept in my car. They became my gas gloves. But when summer came, I continued to use them. Even in 100*! Now my bare hands stay all clean inside and I hate getting gas just a littttle bit less.
When I arrived in (snowy!) Cville, I went to the bakery to say hello.
GRANOLA is in production! Tomorrow – come around 7am – we’re releasing 300 bundles of 3 bags of Cville Cluster on my shop page. We’re doing 3 rounds of 300 bags for the next 3 weeks so we can ship it out as fresh as possible. FYI to anyone interested!!
On the last bit of my journey, I had lunch #2 – a smoothie.
I was literally chanting “smooth-ie” in my head I was so much in the mood for one.
In side the Vita-mix:
- 2 kale leaves (salad!)
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup frozen berries
- Half banana
- Half packet of Tera’s Whey (which imparted a lovely vanilla flavor!)
- 2 ice cubes
- Uncle Sam on top!
My sense of smell must be strong because I kept smelling something stinky and figured out it was the spoon!! It was like I could smell the metal!? Weird.
Got a million things to do this week!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Welcome back! That smoothie has an interesting color. Looks great.
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Happy you made it back safely! That smoothie looks great and that bread for your PBJ looks even better! I’m a sucker for good bread!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Glad you made it back safe! 🙂
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
900 bags of granola! Wowza!
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Love the gas gloves idea. I almost always REMOVE my gloves before pumping gas to avoid getting any gross gas on my [regular] gloves. Unfortunately, this leaves my poor little fingers quite cold — gas gloves to the rescue!
Lisa says
My sense of smell was out of control when I was pregnant with my son. You seem to be having a lot of the same aversions and cravings I did. I hope you’re feeling well!!!
Amelia says
I agree, pretzels make a great car snack! I love the mini pretzel thins from TJ’s right now. 🙂
Kale is the one ingredient that I have been hesitant to add to my smoothies. I LOVE kale and can eat it in any form, but I’m terrified it will impart a funky aftertaste on my fruit, even in the vitamix! I assume it must be mild though (?) if you couldn’t taste it.
KathEats says
You can taste it and it’s stinky. It does sort of “ruin” a smoothie, but I wanted some greens in my life today and we were out of spinach!
Amelia says
Darn it! Maybe I’ll brave it one day and add a LOT of almond butter along with it. 😉 Thanks for the reply.
Catherine says
Adding more strawberries and bananas helps.
allison @ thesundayflog says
i go tropical with kale or collards…pineapple, banana, green grapes, coconut water, and massive amounts of kale or collard greens. no taste whatsoever 🙂
Elisabeth says
So excited for the granola! 😀
Blessing {Working Mom Journal} says
I was on your page earlier at Opensky hoping that I hadn’t missed it. This is good news, you just made my day. My husband will be so excited to have his granola!
Samantha says
That bread looks so good. It’s making me crave a PB&J sandwich right now, but I’ve got nothing that would even compare!
I still can’t wrap my head around eating a smoothie with a spoon.
Kelly says
Now I want pretzels… and not because I’m hungry either. Just because they are fun to snack on. 🙂
JimPurdy.blogspot.com says
Those clementines sure look delicious.
Nozzle-phobia, LOL!
Nicole says
I’m envious of your green smoothie. I’ve recently rediscovered your blog to find you’re pregnant- I think you’re maybe two weeks farther along than me. I’ve missed veggies! The last couple of days I’ve been getting some salad in me, but it’s been slathered with blue cheese dressing…a far cry from the simple balsamic vinegar I used to use.
I also now want some granola…I’d make some but we’re in the process of moving so stuff is between places. Maybe I’ll just have to order some!
KathEats says
Oh gosh, read back a few weeks and you won’t see a veggie to be found. Roll with it – your aversion is temporary. I’m finding now (nearly 13 weeks) that my tastes are coming back.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Getting gas bothers me for the same reason. I never really thought about gloves but I always look to see if the gas station has paper towels by the pumps (sometimes they do!) and if so, I use that to hold the nozzle. I bet gas nozzles are one of the dirtiest public things out there along with shopping carts (which equally gross me out).
Pat says
Why should they be super dirty? I assume they’re no worse than door handles. Most people don’t drive around with oily/greasy hands. I wear gloves in the winter because the handles are COLD, but not the rest of the year.
KathEats says
If you’re opening a door, you’re probably near a bathroom. On car trips, you don’t have a sink nearby! (Unless you go into the gas station, which is usually not very clean.)
Erin says
When I have to go to the bathroom on car trips, my husband always stops at a gas station. Yuck. I always stop at a food place. I told him I think he makes it his mission to find the nastiest restrooms on the interstate.
Emily says
kath, i have to tell you this is one of my all time favorite posts. the gas glove idea is basically genius, and i literally screamed when you said you’re going to be selling cville cluster on open sky tomorrow!!!! and i say this all the time but…nuttzo is just so fuh-reaking good 🙂
KathEats says
Hahah – I’m glad!
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Glad you made it back safely and gas gloves are an AWESOME idea! Target has gloves clearanced at $.60 right now!!
Lindsay @ Running the Windy City says
Pretzels are definitely the best [car] snack! I
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I totally hate getting gas too. I try to avoid it as much as possible!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I can’t stand refilling my car with gas either! About a month ago, our weather was crazy cold and windy, and I went as far as to Google full-serve gas stations in my area. Sadly, there are none. But I thought it was worth a try! I love your gas glove idea – I may have to do that myself!
Lu says
Gas gloves!!! Brilliant!
Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy says
I am the same way about pumping gas! I always hate the way my hands smell after pumping it, and its always worse in the winter because it is cold! I was spoiled growing up because my dad always used to fill my car up for me! Looks like my future husband is going to have to carry on the tradition!
Glad you made it home safe!
Mama Pea says
I’ve NEVER pumped gas before! In Oregon it’s a law that you cannot pump your own gas! 🙂
Jess says
I hope you have a spare room, Mama Pea, because I am moving to Oregon!
In all seriousness, I hate pumping gas. It is just a waste of my day! I am lucky to now be working 5 minutes from my house, so I only need gas once every 4-6 weeks. Before that I needed a tank a week, and it was my most hated chore!
JesssicaE says
Yes, I live in Oregon too and I’ve only had to do it once… and actually that’s a fin because my husband did it. 🙂
Kimberly says
It’s a law in New Jersey too. (I think)
KathEats says
Jealous!!!!!!
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
I also hate getting gas for the same reason! Also, I’m not used to it yet and I’m always fumbling around with the nozzle! I’ve lived in Oregon for most of my life where there are gas station attendants to pump gas for you (you aren’t allowed to pump your own!), so it’s been quite an adjustment after moving to Cville.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Gas gloves are probably a good idea…it always skeeves me wondering just what germs are lurking on gas pump handles. Ignorance is bliss, I tell ya 🙂
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
at first, when I saw your gas-pumping photo I thought you were holding onto the gas lever of a motorbike…I thought “what is Kath doing on a motorcycle road trip!!!?” but then I read…hehe
Cait's Plate says
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! I’m setting my alarm for 5am and anxiously awaiting the deal!!! I’ve been waiting for this day ever since you told me it was coming up! 🙂
Also? Pretzels really do taste so SO good when you’re bored! Particularly the mini twists. Why is that??
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
Yum, granola! I may have to check it out tomorrow 🙂 I hate getting gas too! I know it’s bad, but I always run it until the tank is basically empty!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
I think I will get a pair of gloves into my car right now. My husband always uses a plastic bag if he doesn’t have gloves with him. Looks like your healthy appetite is back. Do you feel better now that you are in your 12th week?
KathEats says
Yes, definitely !
Allie says
Move to New Jersey and you will never pump gas again.
Anna says
I hate getting gas too!! Though I never thought about the hand thing… I just hate adding the stop to my trip/planning in the extra time, and having to pay for something that ruins the environment. For the past 6 months I’d been filling up only half way so it didn’t seem like so much (though okay I know that makes NO sense since I just have to stop twice as often) but the last time I went I actually committed to a whole tank. I think I’m improving…:)
KathEats says
It doesn’t make sense, but I also totally understand why you do it 🙂 Going below 25% full is scary!
Erin says
I hate pumping it so much that I put it off until the light starts flashing.
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
The smoothie looks amazing! I’ve been loving clementines all winter. They are so sweet and convenient.
Alyse says
I used to work night shift at a gas station and we were supposed to clean the pump nozzles every other night. Um, we cleaned them maybe once a month. Yeah, I totally get the grossness of it.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
That’s funny about the gloves. And why I always like my husband to do the gas (and then wash his hands). Duh! hah
Marcia Compton says
I will be at a conference from 8-12 hope it does not sell out before i can order some yucks
KathEats says
You might be able to get it at 7am!
Eireni says
Hi Kath, I am a first time commenter but long time reader (so sorry that this is my first comment!) but I wanted to let you know that it can be dangerous to pump gas with gloves on, as static from the gloves can cause fires in gas stations! I wouldn’t know this except that I used to work at Wawa (a convenience store in NJ) and we had to have training to learn how to pump gas to work at the store. Please be safe when pumping gas; rubber gloves are MUCH safer than ones made of fabric.
KathEats says
Oh man, I didn’t think of this!! Did you have to tell people to take them off? Maybe I could use a kitchen sink cleaning glove that is rubber…but that would look pretty funny!!!!
KathEats says
PS. What about leather?
Erin says
Eireni,
Wawa is the best convenience store ever. My husband and I fell in love with each other over lots of cups of Wawa coffee. I miss it. Take care!
Julie says
LOVEEEE WAWA!!!!
kath – wawa is a convenience store in nj, delaware, and maryland. maybe pennsylvania too….BUT ITS ALSO SO MUCH MORE.
anyway,im just clarifying Eireni’s comment because she said she worked at a wawa in nj, meaning she was the one doing all the pumping. like Oregon, it’s also a state law you cannot pump your own gas in NJ. everyone made fun of me when i had to learn when i went to a different state for college….
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
I totally hate getting gas as well. So icky and your hands smell like the gas. I, too, keep a pair of gas gloves in the car but never thought to use them in the summer. Good idea.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I never thought to wear gloves when I pump gas! Although I’m always afraid I’ll get gas on my hands so that’s a good idea!
Becca says
My fiance has gas gloves! He won’t pump gas without them. I think he wears leather ones to reduce the static mentioned in an earlier comment.
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Haha love the gas gloves idea!!
Angel7 says
I do not like gas nozzles either! I cannot stand the smell of gas on my hands.
Being pregnant, my senses are heightened as well! I cannot even wear perfume now, because I am afraid I will get a sinus headache.

Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
This post makes me want some citrus!! I just ran out of my oranges 🙁
Jasmine says
You would love Oregon. It’s illegal for us to pump our own gas!
Jessica says
So, I think I feel you a little on that gas station issue as my boyfriend insists upon filling only $10 on each visit resulting in us making quadruple the number of gas stops as the average “Kath.”….I may need to order some of that granola to give me the stamina of patience I need to deal with it….oh yeah, and move that sensitive sniffer to something less metal-y and more cookie-ish…take advantage of that new gift! =)
Maria says
I’m impressed by your bathroom stop count on such a long ride. That smoothie sounds really good!! Great way to get some veggies in.
gillian says
when i was pregnant i don’t think i had any real ‘cravings’ but i really, really, really enjoyed eating fruit and red meat. the best thing about eating while pregnant was that good food tastedf FANTASTIC…i remember saying to my husband ‘this is the BEST PEACH EVER’. ‘no, THIS is the best strawbery ever!’. the funniest thing (and i’ll be interested to see if this happens to you or happened to your readers) was that i was completely and totally influenced to want something when other people talked about it. if i heard someone talking about baked potatos, i wanted them. ice cream, wanted it. pita bread and hummus, needed it immediately. i thought about food all day long! it was great!
katie @KatieDid says
It’s like a charcoal smoothie… interesting! Glad to hear you enjoyed the protein powder, I’ve seen that kind around before and have wondered about it.
JesssicaE says
“None of your cravings are from your pregnancy yet.” This is just not true!
I must politely ask if you have ever been pregnant? You definitely have aversions/and cravings at 13 weeks. I was horribly sick up until 9 weeks (I got lucky) and I was only able to get down the few random things that sounded good. And they were very odd cravings. I am almost 19 weeks now and my cravings are pretty normal, but every woman is different. Some women have odd cravings from beginning to end.
My pregnancy cravings from weeks 4-16 were NOTHING like period cravings. They were a whole new ball game.
Ashley says
It’s your RD-same-due-date-twin here. Smells are the WORST. I can literally smell my bra each day. It’s SO weird. And it’s like RIGHT THERE, under my nose, unable to escape. Makes me gag! I could totally see smelling the metal!
Catalina @ Cake with Love says
Oh, how delicious that smoothie looks, I just checked your Great Harvest website, everything looks so delicious, I would really like to try the bread and the sweets!
Linda says
I’m a Jesrey girl and it’s illegal to pump your own gas here. I hope it never changes, I couldn’t imagine having to pump gas in a dress, etc. We are very lucky!
Rachel says
I AM SO EXCITED FOR MORE CVILLE GRANOLA!
(1) Hopefully I can get to it before it sells out
(2) I wish my great harvest sold it!
(3) Congrats on your pregnancy! (late I know, but I don’t comment much)
🙂
KathEats says
!!! hope you got some!
Rachel says
I did! Phew!
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
Gas gloves are SUCH A good idea because I HATE how my hands get dirty, germy and smelly!
Sue says
I’m upset that you took Katie’s comment off your blog…it would have generated a meaningful discussion. It is disappointing that you censor your blog in this manner and wish that you would consider allowing other viewpoints that challenge your thoughts of healthy living. It also worries me that you crumble birthday cakes on top of your oatmeal.
Jessica says
I would have agreed if she hadn’t literally called Kath an ‘abomination’ at the end of her comment. That goes beyond generating a meaningful discussion IMO.
Laura says
I know what you mean about the gas hands! Yuck! I keep wipes in my car so I can wipe my hands off after pumping!
Khushboo says
I love pretzels dipped in peanut butter..SO good!
Jeannie says
Yay! Thanks for the head’s up. Just ordered 2 bundles. LOVE your granola and wish that the GH in Lexington, MA would make it. SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!! Cannot wait. Had some plain GY for breakfast and was thinking how good CVille Cluster would taste with it. THANK YOU.
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
One of the few benefits of living in New Jersey is that we don’t have to pump gas. When we take cross country trips, I always ask Ralph to let me pump the gas a few times so that I can start to become comfortable with it. When we get to New Mexico, I’ll Have to do it!
Ana says
I LOVE your idea and am going to put a pair of gas gloves in my car today! I am another one who HATES to put gas.
Thanks for sharing your genius idea Kath!
Ana
SilviaH says
thanks for the gas station glove idea!! why didn’t I think of that??!! …..arg. I always used the less than environmental friendly paper towels to grab the pump. That’s why I like to read your posts, you are always shedding the light to us on new products/ideas and most deliciously…food!
Sandy says
Don’t you feel so lucky to be just 3.25 hours via country roads from your family and still get to live in Charlottesville? Your mom will be burning that road up once baby KERF arrives.
Megan Jones says
Those gas gloves are such a neat idea. I used to hate pumping my gas for the same reason. I hated that sometimes my hands would smell like gas for hours after filling up, even after washing! Now that I live in Oregon I don’t have to worry about it since it is illegal to pump your own gas. I never thought I would miss pumping my own gas, but I would rather have stinky hands than wait forever to get my gas during busy times! Especially with your gloves I wouldn’t have to worry about waiting or stinky hands!
