Another great yoga class! This time I wore cropped pants to keep my legs from getting too wet and brought a towel to put down. That was much better! I liked this instructor too, and the class was just as flexible and fun. We went through the usual flow: vinyasas, twists, balancing posts, abs, floor posts and the cool down ones. I bought a 10-class pass to get me through the summer. Luckily they offer student rates. I wish I could afford to go once a week, but I think I’ll have to stick with every other week. Today’s class was kind of empty, and I actually prefer to be crammed in – there’s more energy!
Not so good news for my thumb
: it hurt really bad today during down dog. I asked the instructor about it and she showed me the correct positioning – which I am mostly doing – but the problem is it HURTS to push through the ball of my hand and knuckles. It feels better to do it wrong. The pain is in my thumb web and is related to my pointer finger and thumb of my right hand. She suggested folding my mat over and also using my fist sometimes too. I’ll probably modify in my next class. After class Kelsey and I showered in the two stalls they have and put on our picnic clothes. I also grabbed an organic pear and hot tea (complimentary!) before we left. I’m saving the pear for tomorrow’s breakfast because we are all out of fruit!
We went to Latta Park and set up lunch. My smoothie held me over well for yoga – but who thinks about food when they’re sweating buckets! (Well, actually I do sometimes, but I didn’t today 😉 ) But by 11:45 I was READY to eat!!
I made a Curried Salmon Salad. Just a can of wild salmon (from Costco) with chopped bell pepper, pickle and jalapeno with a heaping tsp of curry powder, 1 tbsp olive oil mayo, 1 tsp mustard and a pinch of salt. Served on Flax Oat Bran from Great Harvest –
Kelsey brought a little container of bean salad she made from her sprout hummus of yesterday –
She also brought snap peas and cantaloupe and I added a few kashis –
Munch munch. This lunch didn’t fill me up very well. I think I need more water from too much sweating!
Too bad for me: I HAVE to mow the lawn today!! Our grass is so long and Matt is working all day and I am not, so it’s me or go through this long vacation weekend with super long grass. I totally don’t want to, but I suppose it’s good exercise.
But what if Gilbert the Garden Snake is out there!?!?!
Kati says
I hope you avoid any Gilbert run-ins!!! Tread lightly 🙂

Your picnic lunch looks amazing! So much variety and colour!
I hope Mr. Snake doesn’t come out when you mow the lawn!
Jenn@slim-shoppin says
Kath, I am so bummed because the Great Harvest in my town of Oak Park, IL is closing due to the economy!
Its been there for like 14 years? I always loved running there for a nice loaf of crusty bread to have with dinner.
Now, I’ll have to learn to make more breads from your hubby’s site!
Ellen @ Peace in Motion says
lunch looks yummmmyyyyyy
good luck avoiding the snake!!
JENNA says
your sandwich looks super good. blah = mowing the lawn. cringe=possible snake encounters! I hope you have a good snake-free afternoon.
sue says
i hope gilbert’s not out there! i’ve been weeding my garden and i’m grossed out by all the bugs, but i keep thinking- at there are no snakes (yet!)
Runeatrepeat says
The snake will be scared away by the sound of the mower. Let’s hope!

your bread always looks so great. I wish we had a Great Harvest around here!

Oh dear, I hope the next yoga class comes with less pain. Lunch looks fantastic!
Moran (The Running Addict) says
Oh I usually have to do the mowing every other weekend…well, at least I get a tan!
Allison K says
I’m sure the snake will run away from the lawn mower…..hopefully.
Colleen says
I think the snake will be scared by the mower – in fact I’m 99% sure he will. Beautiful lunch! 🙂
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
I’m willing to bet you that Gilbert will want nothing to do with the mower!
Great picnic!

Just wanted to comment on the yoga issue – as I’ve posted before, I have similar wrist and hand issues. I just went to a wrist/hand workshop this weekend with the amazing Kelly Haas, and I think the most important thing I learned is that it’s NOT about pushing down, it’s about pulling up. You want to be pulling energy UP your arms, not pushing down into the ground. When positioned correctly, the four corners of your hand should be on the mat but the center of your palm should be off the mat and most importantly your wrist should be UP off the mat, so you’re pulling the energy up through your wrist, and not bearing down on your wrist flat on the mat. It just takes some time to build up the strength – I would try shifting some weight into the outer corners of your hands if putting weight on the inner corners is too painful. Good luck!

I’m quite sure Gilbert will run from the mower! If not, problem solved 🙂
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
I’m so glad you enjoyed your class!!! It’s so true that a large group has such positive and exciting energy =) I’m glad you felt that.
It’s definitely ok to modify your poses if they don’t feel right. It’s YOUR yoga practice!
Katie says
I have always wanted to try one of those “hot” yoga classes, but my gym does not have them and I am a bit too poor to invest in another place at the moment. Also, I tend to sweat buckets(I mean an insane amount just sitting) that my husband and I joke I probably would lose all the water in my body if I tried on of those. But it’s awesome that you are trying them out!
linda says
You mentioned that the lunch plate didn’t quite fill you up. I know you don’t post calories anymore, but would you mind sharing what the approximate count is. There seems to be a lot of food on that plate, but i can’t really gauge the size of the sandwich from the picture. Thanks!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
Lawn mower beats snake. I don’t think you have a thing to worry about.
brandi says
glad yoga was good!
have fun mowing – I don’t think snakes like lawn mowers so you should be fine 🙂

Can’t seem to jump on the yoga bandwagon yet– I’m more like struggling to crawl on it. At least I’ve been trying it, though!

I’m having a picnic lunch with a girlfriend tomorrow! Thanks for the great suggestions 🙂

Hi Kath!
I hope you feel better soon. I totally agee with Court, modify modify! 🙂
So happy you are enjoying yoga, girl! I think I missed which studio you liked? I tried HOT yoga and to be honest… didn’t like it. I guess it felt like I was back at the gym all sweaty. I am the same girl who always slowed down the last minute at races, cause I hated to hurt at the end. 😉
Love to you, sweet Kath!
Michelle Hisae says
I too have a finger issue. I broke my right pinkie finger when I was younger, and now it doesn’t naturally straighten all the way. So, when yoga instructors say “spead your fingers as wide and flat as you can,” I know I can’t! Oh well, it doesn’t hinder my practice at all. 🙂

Hopefully you will avoid another Gilbert run-in…
About the salmon salad… I don’t eat fish, but even THAT looks good to me! I’m impressed!

i LOVE mowing the lawn. i wish i owned a home to do so. just like you said, think of it as great exercise.
Dee says
Gilbert will run like hell… or slither, I guess, when the mower starts, don’t you worry!
Heather says
Sounds like the class went well again! That will be a lot of fun in the summer. It’s probably better to have 10 passes anyways considering how hectic summers can get! Have fun with it! Did you ever end up buying your own mat?
YIKES! Avoid all the snakes out there… hopefully Gilbert doesn’t have any friends! 😉
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
scrumptious looking lunch! good luck avoiding gilbert!
Jo says
Oh you are brave with Gilbert on the loose! I love seeing your picnic lunches – they inspire me to eat outdoors. Just need to wait for the nice weather here in the UK first!
K says
Hope Mr. Snake went buhbye!! Fun picnic – I’m jealous of your weather, it’s rainy up here!
Susan says
Oooh, I’m liking that curried salmon mix! Lovely lunch 🙂
meg says
Yeah for yoga. Looks like a great day for a picnic.
Cammy says
I’m just going to assume the role of Gilbert’s sole advocate on here, apparently…please do not mow him! Without our snake friends, we’d have way more rodents and other pesky critters that are much more a nuisance. A snake that small will not bite you unless thoroughly provoked!
Danielle says
What a picnic! It was such a beautiful day today 🙂
Oh She Glows says
haah watch out for that snake!
Sorry about your thumb…I totally think I do it the wrong way too!
Lindsay @ Foodrun says
Oh god what if you run over him?! I hope it went ok!

Kath, that curried salmon salad looks amazing! And take care of your thumb!

I hope you avoided the snake! And I’m glad to see you and Kelsey are continuing your potluck Wednesdays even with no more class. They always make me so jealous!

Kara ,
Thanks for the tip – I like that idea!
linda ,
Sure – all estimates:
75 – salmon salad
75 – bean salad
150 – 2 oz bread (may be low since that bread is DENSE)
100 – fruit + peas
50 – kashis
=450. It was probably closer to 500. A good amount for a lunch! I think I was dehydrated..
susan ,
I can see that link 🙁
polly ,
It’s called Yoga One and is 94* of blissful warmth!
Heather ,
Kelsey gave me her old one when she upgraded 🙂
Cammy ,
I would never want to kill Gilbert – just wanted him out of my house! And he wasn’t small – maybe 3′ long!?

You commented that your hands are bothering you in down-dog. I used to have that problem, too. I was in a lot of pain about 2 weeks ago and it turns out that I have tendinitis in both of my wrist. I guess the moral of the story–be kind to your wrist and hands.
Cammy says
Next time take a picture of him! What color was he? I am intrigued.
Kath says
Cammy ,
He was a huge black snake! I will not get close enough for photography, and I hope there isn’t a next time!!
