I did not sleep well last night 🙁 I blame the cup of Starbucks coffee at work yesterday! Starbucks has 2-3x the caffeine content of regular coffee and I can always tell (in a bad way). I tossed and turned with a lot on my mind.
But somehow (somehow!) getting up at 4:45 wasn’t that hard. I had places to go and a friend to meet!
Emily and I loved our Monday AM run so much we decided to do another. I’m having a blast with the early workouts! I’m sure I’ll get tired of them again, but they sure have made a fun sudden comeback. And I only have 2 more weeks to get through and then I can workout any time I please
I had a date, which was dunked in a little PB, before I left the house at 5:30.
5 miles later!!! My legs were zonked and we were ready for oats!
For TWO Servings
- 1/4 cup Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 banana (I’ve been getting the EarthFare bananas and something is not right with them. Despite being mushy, spotted and ripe, they taste like they are not ripe! And I promise they aren’t plantains 🙂 Must find better bananas next week!)
- Vanilla, salt
Toppings
- Nature’s Path granola
- Lingonberry preserves
- BISCOFF SPREAD!!!
- Coconut
The Biscoff melted in. Pure bliss.
Caftea was served…
Yum
Happy Almost Friday!

I had the same problem with my bananas recently!! I think I bought them at Wal-Mart. Some were barely freckled but super mushy & some were really freckled but not very sweet. :-/ Your breakfast looks super good though! I hope you have a good day at work! I have to work from 9 to 8. Yikes!
A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) says
It must have been difficult to share that Biscoff spread! 😉 And to be totally honest, I thought the same thing about my bananas too, seriously. Mine seem kind of slimy in texture instead of creamy.
Peanut butter & dates are such a great combo too! When I eat them as a snack, I like to add an almond inside for crunch, and a sprinkle of salt.
Marina says
I hate when bananas don’t ripe properly. Too mushy but not to sweet, or sth like that. Have a nice day!!
M says
What is Caftea ? (coffee, tea, a mix?!)
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I loved AM workouts but recently have been having to push it back to the afternoon for class. The afternoon ones are great, but it’s sooo nice to get it out of the way first thing. Waking up early isn’t fun, though..so I guess it’s all give n take 😛
Have a good day!
Whitney @ Lettuce Love says
Starbucks always keeps me up all night too! I can’t drink the stuff that often. Happy Thurs 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I Love morning workouts! I hate doing it any other time unless I am hiking! Glad you started your day off great! Those oats look delicious…now I am off to make mine! Have a great day!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oh that grinds my gears when bananas aren’t right 🙁 I find it totally ruins a breakfast! Mine wasn’t quite there for my green monster this morning – it wasn’t as good as usual :'(
Nicole, RD says
I wish I had the motivation or energy to get in early morning workouts! Maybe when I don’t have a 45 minute commute and a 7am start time!
jenna says
Having a friend waiting for you makes getting up easier!!! this biscoff butter looks freaking outrageous!! i need to find some!
Hannah says
I was just wondering, do you ever put dates in your oats? I was thinking of trying that myself, because surely they’d go lovely and melty and coft and caramelly?
Kath says
Sometimes!
Simply Life says
as always, your oats look delicious!
nic says
I would definitely LOVE the morning workouts too!!
Too bad my dance classes are in the evening! But I do enjoy my morning walk/runs on the weekends!
Oh and about the Biscoff spread!! I discovered this last summer in France! It isn’t called Biscoff here just Lotus Karamellgebäck! I was hooked instantly!! And scarfed that jar down in about two weeks!!! Thank god I haven’t seen this here (yet?!)! 😀
Carolyn @ lovinlosing says
I wish I was more of a morning person because it’s such a good feeling having your workout done for the day. RIght now I’m training for a triathlon, though, and the pool is a bit far off so to avoid traffic I go late at night. Last night I didn’t leave the gym until 10:30.
Veggielady4life says
That’s so nice you guys can workout together in the AM! Was that breakfast for you and Emily? What time do you end up making it to your internship?
Kath says
Yep – both of us.
Got there at 8:15
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
But that’s what makes Starbucks so dang good! 🙂
Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says
I now feel like I NEED Biscoff in my life 🙂
Dorry says
I’ve had that same issue before with organic bananas from Whole Foods. Thankfully, it was just once. Once again, your early morning workouts inspire me!
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
How generous to share that Biscoff! 🙂
Ok, you’ve inspired me… morning exercise this morning it is!
Marissa says
I hate when fruit’s not sweet! So yucky and disappointing! I remember last summer when I was struggling with ED, though, I would always taste a berry before I ate any, and then I wouldn’t eat it if it was too sweet because I thought it would have more sugar than one that was sour or tart. How stupid was that?!

As much as I love Starbucks lattes, I actually don’t enjoy their coffee. Is that weird?
Delish looking oats as always! 🙂
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I’ve had that problem with bananas too, and it’s usually when I store them too close to other fruit. I’m sure you know that the gas from fruits can ripen bananas, but sometimes I’ve found it has more of an effect than others! Hope you have a great day!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
That is an EARLY wakeup call! I can always tell if I have even just a little extra caffeine in my day– I will toss and turn for hours that night.
Hope you have a great weekend!
Amy says
You have got to stop talking about the end of your internship…my baby is due at the same time and your countdown is freaking me out! Hahahaha… 😀 When you first started your rotations the end seemed so far in the future-and now the end really is approaching too quickly-eeekkk!!
Kath says
Haha 🙂
Whitney says
I’ve never heard that Sbux has higher caffenine content. I know they burn the hell outta their beans which is why I never drink it but its interesting that you made that comment.
Richard says
The secret is to switch to Starbucks decaf. It still has enough of a jolt to pick you up when you need it, but it’s not super-powerful like their over-caffeinated regular coffees.
Ashley@thehungryscholar says
I can drink coffee at 9 pm and sleep like a baby, but I’m also addicted to the stuff.
Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches says
I am trying to get into the swing of morning workouts, and I must admit that it’s great to get it over with and have the rest of your day awaiting you. I liked your pre-workout snack! I might have to steal that idea for my next morning workout. 🙂
Sami says
I totally admire you for all of your morning workouts…I simply can’t drag my butt out of bed. My typical workouts are after work, but then again I feel like I’m missing out on other family stuff that they all do together (attend sisters’ sporting events and such)…I guess I’ll either have to sacrifice sleep or family time!
I never knew Starbucks coffee had so much caffeine!!! Scary.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i swear when you sleep well, i don’t, and when i do (seven hours last night) you don’t! here’s hoping we both get on a good sleep schedule again soon!
Allison K says
I worked at Starbucks a few years ago, and if i recall the more processed the beans are, the less actual caffeine is in the coffee, but the stronger the taste. So it tastes stronger, but there is actually more caffeine is something like folgers.
Again..this was almost 5 years ago so….maybe I have my facts backwards!
Allison K says
so I just googled it, and I guess there was a study published in the wall street journal that Starbucks and other high end chains routinely have up to 56% more caffeine than places like the gast station and 7-11 (and I’m guessing Folgers?)
Amy says
Allison, you’re right (I mean, I’ve heard that too!)! The more processed the beans the less caffeine in the coffee…it sounds backwards and takes a few read-throughs to make sense of that fact, I think.
Emily @ The Front Burner Blog says
LOVE the morning runs! And the oats. And the biscoff – thank you for sharing your precious jar! 🙂
Julz says
A date dunked in peanut butter….now THAT sounds good!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I had a guy friend who was still on East Coast time while we were on the West Coast, so it was easy for him to get up, call me, and be downstairs so that I could never get out of running.
Amy says
I loooooove Starbucks coffee, everything else tastes too watery and bland to me! That’s probably b/c of the caffeine content but I think s-bucks actually sets a high standard for coffee, and local chains often taste bland in comparison. That being said, I definitely could see it keeping someone up at night!
Kristin (Salty Tooth) says
I need to get back on the early morning workout wagon, it so nice to get it out of the way and just enjoy the day.
Wei-Wei says
Yuummy breakfast. It’s almost like PB+J oats, with a twist! (Would it be B+LP? o.O) I love it when I get my exercise in early in the morning. It’s nice to get through the day with the endorphin boost and knowledge that I can laze around if I want to 😀
Happy Thursday! 🙂

Stacy (StacyGrowsHealthy) says
That biscoff spread looks super delicious in those oats.
Jen says
Kath: Out of curiosity, do you eat the oatmeal as pictured with each ingredient maintaining some sense of its individuality or do you stir it all together into one big glorious conglomeration that elevates the deliciousness even further?
Kath says
Good question!! I always keep the toppings on top. I am horrified when Matt (and most males I’ve seen!) stir them all together! You lose the flavor!
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
Love the morning workouts! I got in a 4 miler yesterday morning and it was BEAUTIFUL out 🙂
Camille says
Biscoff spread!?
I am sooo tracking this down!
Amelia says
Just in case you haven’t tried it…add a little hot water to your Starbucks coffee. Since their coffee is so strong, a litlte water hardly makes a difference. Plus you can still enjoy a full mug of coffee without as much caffeine.
P.S.
I am not sure that their coffee has more caffeine so much as they use the two tablespoons of coffee per six ounces of water.
Laura says
That bowl of oats looks AMAZING. you are really inspiring me to get cracking with the early am workouts, although with school it’s a bit difficult but hopefully thoughout the summer holidays i’ll manage! xx
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
That looks like pure heaven. Enjoy your leisurely evening.
Liz says
Did you learn that caffeine fact from this month’s Real Simple? It shocked me to read that two excedrin tablets have way more caffeine than a Red Bull or a Diet Coke!!
Dee says
I love your oats posts! They always look SO delish!
Stella says
Starbucks does not have “2 to 3 x the amount of caffeine”. When you’re so wrong about this, it makes readers wonder what else you might be so far off by. 🙁
