Most Friday nights we walk downtown, eat pizza, sip wine and listen to music. Relaxing!
But this past Friday we took off running…
…to our gym, which was having its monthly Friday Fitness Social! {I think I need a new Davidson visor, don’t you?!}
The Friday event varies from cycle classes to boot camps to an obstacle course like we did tonight. I unfortunately had been busy for the other ones, so I was glad to be able to make this one!
There was even a pool involved, although with a mile walk home, there was no way I was getting in!
A handful of our friends were there (some with spouses), and following the hour-long workout there is a happy hour with drinks and snacks. Did I mention that our children are happily playing together in the Kids Zone!? Talk about a fun night! {I blurred out faces in the background on purpose…FYI}
Friday’s event involved a big obstacle course that you plowed through in pairs. The course took Matt and me 3:01 to complete. But in those 3 minutes I spent all of my energy! We were the first pair to go, and we were going as fast as we possibly could. My legs were shaking for the next 15 minutes. I am so competitive that I gave it my all! Originally they were going to time each group, but it ended up being more of a fun event when the logistics of timing everyone proved to be difficult.
The first obstacle was to run up and down a flight of stairs with a sand bag. Matt got a big head start on me (although we had to catch up before we could move to the next station) because I was scared I was going to trip on the tiny stairs!
Go go go!
Next up: 10 weighted ball throws to the ground
Then some lunges
Followed by: a tire pull, some weaving sprints, a giant tire turn over (6 times) and then – leap frog!
Then one final sprint to that building and back to finish.
Matt left me in the dust on the home stretch!
Thanks to my photographer Alice for capturing these shots!
Alice and I were paired up along with our husbands for the next part of the event: the kettle bell relay
We had to sprint to the bells, bring a pair back, pass them to the next person and so on. Our group won the first round but lost the other two. There were about 40 people total so it was a big match!
Afterwards we headed up to our gym’s rooftop for views, drinks, lots of cheese and conversation.
That’s our infinity pool, and next time we are bringing bathing suits!
This food tasted so good after our workout. {I ate about twice you see here!}
So did the beer!
Matt and I ran home with Mazen and made salads with egg on top for our “real” dinner.
Can’t wait for the next event!

This looks like such a fun event!

Sounds like such a refreshing way to spend a Friday night! I’ve never done an obstacle course-themed workout before but it must be amazing to be doing something different every few minutes

Kudos to you! I feel like as soon as Friday evening rolls around, working out is not an option for me. Which is why I usually get my gym time in early Friday morning. Looks like you had fun though, and what a good way to switch it up!

How fun! That’s a great idea to get families involved, meet people, and show that exercise can be competitive and fun. I would love it if my Y did that!

That is so fun! Can’t wait for your Fitbit Flex post (um, is there going to be one?) I got one this weekend as a GIFT! So far, I’m lovin it.

Yes! In the works
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
Wow! That looks like fun. Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition. 😉
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I love that they turned the workout into a competition/game – I think that makes it so much more fun!

Loving your workout top! I just ordered it a few weeks ago and was having a hard time find the right sports bra to wear with it. Is your sports bra the same brand?
KathEats says
It’s the Double Dare bra from Athleta. I have it in black, but I only see tie-dye on their website right now (but it’s only sale!)
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Such a great idea! Totally suggesting it at my gym!!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
What a fun event!! I love that the kids were in the daycare too. Great way to get away without needing a babysitter.

What a fun event!! Love it. You’re so fit!:)

We have the same pool at our house…the kids love it!! By the way, I personally think that a couple that works out together, stays together! I can’t get my hubby to work out with me for the life of me! Ugh!
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
That sounds so fun! Good for your gym holding something like that 🙂

Looks so fun, and what a beautiful gym!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
So fun! I love the mixing of fitness with social. A great way to make some new friends too! 🙂

Looks like a great workout! I have a question about your running form . Do you notice you strike your heels heavily? Fellow runner here, just asking and also how come in the group picture with the ladies you look so much thinner than in the other pictures ? Caught my eye.
KathEats says
I definitely don’t land toe first, so I probably am heel heavy. And I’m not sure what you mean by your second comment…
Emily @ Life on Food says
Sounds like fun. I great healthy way to get out and celebrate the end of the week.
Mollie K. says
Thats so much fun!! Love how the whole fam can be involved.
Can I ask what your favorite racer back sports bra is?
KathEats says
It’s the Double Dare Bra from Athleta. I really like it – supportive enough for running under a tank with built in bra and it looks so much better than my Moving Comfort bras with the straps hanging out.
Alex @ Kenzie Life says
That’s a really cool idea! And that infinity pool is at a gym? Wow, that’s pretty awesome! Sounds like you had a great workout too!
Laura @ She Eats Well says
Love that workout – I think it feels great to switch it up like that once in a while! Also, starting the weekend with a good workout Friday night is my favorite thing- I love doing a Vinyasa flow to start my weekend off right!
Hannah @ eat, drink, and save money says
So cool! I wonder if I can convince my gym to do something like that. I love the idea of having a happy hour afterwards.
Kamado Jim says
Kettlebell lunges are no joke either. It would take way more than one Corona at the end of my workout to motivate me, but perhaps we’re just not seeing the other five you drank… 🙂
KathEats says
Ha!

This is totally something nerd-alert me would love on a Friday night. Definitely know I’m aging when I appreciate a good sweat with friends than bar time and staying out late! Our summer Friday night fun when not camping has been a bike ride, stopping at a local restaurant for a light dinner, then pedaling back home.
RunEatRepeat says
Ah! That looks like so much fun. Love it.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while & moved to Cville at the beginning of this month. My boyfriend & I just joined that gym and were there watching some of the events on Friday. Actually, we almost interrupted someone’s run up & down the stairs while watching. (Ooops! We didn’t know they were going up & down the stairs!) Looks like it was a great event, we’ll definitely have to sign up next time!
KathEats says
Cool!! You should – it was very fun!
Maryea {happy healthy mama} says
Looks like such a fun event. I need to get something like this going at my gym. Although getting my husband to participate might be tough. Grrr. 😉
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Sounds like such fun friday! I love fitness + social events combined!
Amanda - Create N Plate says
Looks so fun! The best events are the social fitness events!

This is an awesome community event, I love it when people get together to eat AND be active! It makes me want to start some meet-ups with my gals around here. We have a “day in boots” coming up on the USMC base where we get to try out our Marine Skills for the day and I’m pretty pumped about that opportunity to see what my man’s exercises are like, it’ll be tough but fun for sure.
