Another weekend comes to a close. It was a good one!!
Friday night it rained a lot, so we went out to dinner with Jeff. Their faces! Ha!
We tried Burton’s but the wait was too long, so we ended up at Rocksalt. Mazen loved his fancy pineapple/water drink!
We shared a bunch of plates on the table – the baked oysters were my favorite!
I had a salad and glass of wine and the boys shared tuna tartar, raw oysters, and charcuterie.
On Saturday we had lots of prep to do for our Fourth Annual Low Country Boil!
Shuckin’ corn!
Per the invite, the party was water themed, and the kiddos had a BLAST on the slip n slide and in the pool! Adults were encouraged to go down too, but Matt was the only one who did!
Matt brewed three beers for the occasion, and we also made a sparking pineapple juice mixture that could be mixed with water for kids or mixed with gin/vodka for grown ups.
Soon enough the boil was ready. We think this was our best yet in terms of flavor and quality.
Our friends also brought tons of great sides – from kale salad to chocolate mousse! I had some more food photos, but they didn’t turn up on my camera! Just this blurry one of my good friends!
The party was actually over quite early – most people had to get home and put kids to bed. Mazen got to stay up till 9:30!
Sunday morning we had a family breakfast of toast, eggs and summery fruits –
The boys went on a run, and I went to the gym, and we all came back for a lunch of leftovers. LCB weekend is kind of like Thanksgiving – you almost look forward to the leftovers more than the main meal!
Sunday night we went swimming at Sarah’s and ate more leftovers for dinner!
Kate says
What a fun night & so family friendly! How do you figure how much of the food to prepare? That would make me so nervous!
KathEats says
It is scary, but this was our fourth one and we think we’ve nailed down a good system! We always have plenty of leftovers.
Ally says
Not to be nit-picky for the sake of being nit-picky but if this is the fourth LCB you’ve had then it would be the 3rd annual. The first of something is not the first annual – just the first. The same event the following year would be the “1st Annual xxxx”. It’s definitely something lots of people and even organizations use incorrectly and is a common misconception.
Katie @ Live Half Full says
How fun! My Aunt and Uncle have a seafood boil every year and I always look forward to it. What a great idea to add artichokes- yum!
Sagan says
Yum! Such a neat & fun idea. I’ve never heard of doing a “boil” before but I like it.
Cassie says
The second picture made me laugh so much! It’s so cute!! Hope you had a lovely weekend <3
Amanda says
OMG Mazen’s little face with that fancy drink- too cute. Your boil looks amazing!
Mary says
What a fun party! The food looks delicious and it looks like a good time was had by all! The weather was so cooperative 🙂 One question though, what does Matt’s shirt mean?
KathEats says
It’s from the brewery Modern Times : )
Kristin says
Yeah, Matt might want to be careful about where he wears that shirt. “The stickiest of the icky” may be on a tshirt from a brewery but it is most definitely a marijuana reference–it’s from a skit on Chapelle’s Show.
Katheryne says
It is a marijuana reference. 😉
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
What a fun party!! I love all the signs!
Alex @ get big, go to work says
What a fun weekend!!! How did this tradition start?
[email protected] says
That looks so fun! I love all the food in a low country boil! I wish they were more popular up here!
jen says
You’ve been to Yards Brewery? I wouldn’t think you folk would be the kind to enjoy Fishtown. Fair enough. I’m sure The Foodery a few blocks away made Matt’s head explode with the endless selection. 🙂
Matt says
Yeah I’ve been to Yards! I love the Philly Pale Ale and the Brawler for some easy drinking beers. Oh and they’d hate to hear me say this but if you mix the Jefferson with the Franklin it tastes like Dr Pepper…
sarah says
Sounds like you need to put in a pool!!
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says
Your back yard looks so fun!
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Picture of the three boys is deadly!!! Love it when kids get a proper sense of humour, even more funny!
Amanda P says
You put artichokes in the boil? We do one a couple of times a year….maybe the addition of artichokes would be good.
polly says
what a perfect weekend! It looked fun and delicious! 🙂 XOXO
and the pic of Maz drinking his pineapple drink he looks about 15. gonna be one cutie patootie teenager. get ready kath!!
Shannon says
Wow! What a great time! I can’t believe no other adults were brave enough for the slip ‘n slide!
I’m curious about the details of the boil- I’d like to put together something similar… I notice you guys eating leftovers. Do you put some up right away? How do you handle food safety on a hot summer day? Presumably the potatoes and corn are fine, but what about the shrimp?
KathEats says
The key is to not let picnic food remain in the danger zone of between 40* and 140* for more than 2 hours. (If it’s really hot out like above 90, that time crunches down even more).
Shannon says
Oh so you guys ate really fast! I’m in Virginia too and there’s such a short window for meat/seafood outside (typically above 90 most summer days). I’d be so tempted to toss shellfish if I didn’t have a timer going. That’s why I ask how you handle it for a party. I get distracted with all the fun!
KathEats says
It wasn’t very hot on Saturday, and people were done eating in about an hour anyways!
Tonya says
Right! People have meat and seafood for cookouts in the summer all the time. The food is outside for about an hour and then taken indoors after everyone has hit the table once or twice. Most people know how long to leave stuff outside.
Randy says
It all looks sooo good and you can tell a great time was had by all.
Mary Jane says
I’ve never heard of a water themed party with no pool! You are so creative!!!!
KathEats says
We had it pool….it was just a tiny one 🙂 Slip n slide, lots of hose, water balloons
Elizabeth Beil says
I love low country boils! It looks like you had an amazing night!
Elyse says
What a fun evening! I love how you always make things kid-friendly! So great!
robin says
Is that the back of your house?? It’s BIG! So is your yard!
Kida says
Hi Kath! I’ve noticed you eat eggs often for breakfast. I love eggs, but I have always worried about eating them more than once or twice a week, since I grew up with the belief that they were high in cholesterol and should be limited. What is you opinion, as a real food eater and nutritionist?
Thanks!
KathEats says
An average if 7 a week, or 1 a day, is totally fine! Turns out dietary cholesterol has very little to do with blood cholesterol and heart disease.
Michele says
Totally unrelated to this post (which is great BTW!) but I remember you saying you were going to watch The Bachelorette. What do you think so far? 🙂
KathEats says
It’s been a good season!! I think she’s crazy to go with anyone but Nick because she’s obviously crazy about him. Can’t wait for the finale!
Bobbie says
I had to jump in when I saw a comment about the bachelorette! I agree with you Kath that she clearly is crazy about Nick. I really liked Sean in the beginning but then eventually became concerned about his jealousy and bad attitude about Nick. But…. I was really hoping she fell for Ben. I’m just not sure her and Nick are a good fit. I can’t even say why but just have a bad feeling about it. My two cents.. since the husband doesn’t want to her a thing about the bachelorette…lol
Sarah says
What fun and creative beer names! Did Matt make those up? The pineapple fizzy drink sounds delish 🙂
KathEats says
Yup!
Anne says
Such a great post! Love the photo of the three guys, Mazen is so cute! It’s fun to see all your photos from the LCB. Would love to hear how you guys pull off so many great parties and events. Wondering how your planning process works…
