‘Twas a running day!
I think all of us were experiencing some second-day-soreness from Wednesday’s beach run. It was tough to get going! But I had that gut feeling that once I got moving my stiffness would loosen, and I was right.
We did 3/4 a mile on the beach to the pier, then meandered on dry land for maybe 2 miles (I do not like running on land! I like the beach!! But it was a compromise run because Kanz does not like the beach). Then we ran the last 3/4 a mile back up the beach from the other direction. Matt led us in some fartleks for that last bit – sprint intervals. I think we hit a 7 minute mile at once point! I like intervals, but they are hard to do by yourself.
Just having sat down to breakfast, my gosh my legs sent me a woosh of tiredness.
I used to be very much opposed to Gatorade. It’s just sugar water with electrolytes. But guess what. I turned into an athlete. And Gatorade is perfect for athletes. I had a few big gulps before my hot beach run and it was just what I needed to get going.
[FYI, I much prefer coconut water but can’t always find it or afford it!]
Post run I whipped up some smoothies –
Threw in some cherries!
Whirled.
Ingredients:
- 1 banana
- Handful Ice
- 2 handfuls spinach
- ~10 cherries
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/3 cup Vega Vanilla Almond Shake n Go Smoothie
- 1.5 cups 1% milk
Plus Bear Naked Apple Pecan trail mix (really, really like this!) and coconut butter –
Regretting not finding some shade for this! Too bright!
In all my years of food blogging, I have never spilled food while moving it around for a shoot. But today my beach dress got caught in the sliding door and a nice blob of smoothie sloshed on the deck and all down my bowl. I cried 🙁
Flying smoothie.
I went with an iced coffee today!
Bada bing. Bada boom.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
today’s a running day for me too! and i can’t wait to stretch and go 🙂 what a great way to end a friday, right?!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
The apple pieces from the trail mix look delicious. I absolutely LOVE dried apples.
Meg says
Hooray for a running day and cherries! Breakfast looks awesome!
Quick q – do you have to scarf down your smoothie bowls because they melt?? Sometimes by the time I’m almost finished mine, it gets too watery to eat 😛
Any suggestions??
Thank ya! 🙂
Meg
Kath says
It was pretty melted by the end. Thus is life?
sweetersalt says
If that’s the first time you’ve ever spilled, I’m impressed! I spill food on myself, well, pretty much daily!
Jess @ Jessica is Getting Fit says
I’m getting so excited to run on the beach on my vacation at the end of the month! I love all these posts with workout ideas while on vacation! 😀
Lana says
I’ve been trying to gauge the “thickness” of your smoothies from your photos but am not always excited.
Are they more creamy /thick (like frozen yogurt), more like a juice-texture, or in between?
Your running truly amazes me!
Kath says
Every one is different. I don’t have a standard recipe – just throw stuff in as the ingredients allow. I like them thick but this one was rather thin.
Lana says
Thanks. 🙂
And I don’t know why I said “excited” – as if I wasn’t impresed with your smoothies (quite the contrary!). I meant to say it wasn’t evident…somehow came out wrong and no proof reading. Oops! :S
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I like them REALLY thick
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I am with you on intervals. I love them, but I like doing them with someone. It really pushes you and keeps you motivated. Workout buddies are the best! Enjoy your day!
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
I remember learning in Home Ec that Gatorade was basically the devil in liquid form, so it’s neat to hear that it actually does have a purpose (aside from just tasting good!).
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
I’ve been loooovin cherries lately!
Simply Life says
oh no, sorry about the spill! I’m just impressed this was the first one!
The Wife of a Dairyman says
It’s amazing how ones body loosens up from soreness after beginning to workout. I had the same experience at my boot camp class early this morning:) Have a great afternoon!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Gosh, I imagine running on the beach must be really difficult. Walking on it is hard enough for me! lol
And sorry about your spillage! Nothing a good wash can’t take care of, though 😀
Erin @ A Girl and Her Mutt says
How could you ever leave the beach now?! It looks so wonderful.
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Sounds like you had a nice run to start the day off followed by a refreshing breakfast.
Wei-Wei says
Aww I’m sorry about you spilling your smoothie! That’s okay, it happens to everyone 😀 Your run sounds awesome, especially the interval part. 😀 Hope your enjoying your holiday as always! 🙂

Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) says
How do you pit cherries? I always try but fail miserably! Haha
Emily says
I’ve been flirting with gatorade and the propel powder thingies in water for running. Didn’t you do a homemade (maybe less evil?) version once? I can’t find the old post though. 🙁
Kath says
Yep! It’s Emily + Casey’s: http://www.thefrontburnerblog.com/2010/02/recipe-homemade-sports-drink.html
Emily says
YES! Thank you!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Oh no not the smoothie! I like your comments on Gatorade. I don’t drink the stuff usually but my PT recommended it on hard workout days. I may have to give it a try to see if I can handle the sugar.
Tracy says
Look for a product called Recharge. It is a an all natural “gatorade” Made by Knudsen I believe. Really really good and not filled with junk like Gatorade.
Diana says
I like Smart Water for electrolytes without the sugar. Agreed though that coconut water is the best…love that stuff! I just picked some up from Earthfare on sale for 99cents each, but it has a “splash of” various fruit juices (mango, passion fruit, guava). I hope they’re good! 🙂
wishful nals says
looks yummy! how were the cherries in the smoothie?
Morgan @ Life After Bagels says
ahhhh so you are seriously less clumsy than I am then . . . I haven’t even been blogging a year, and I’m a once a day blogger . . . and I have spilled so many times AND dropped my camera INTO a bowl of chili
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i am no athlete, but i crave gatorade when i have a fever.
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
OOH that is one awesome mix in the smoothie!!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I am definitely a land runner! The beach wears me out so much more quickly!
Courtney @ Three Months says
Loving the pink cup – very summer-ish! 🙂
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
No use crying over spilled smoothie 🙂
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Your SIAB’s always look SO good!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’ve never had gatorade or sports drinks after a workout because I’m not sure how vigorous a workout has to be to require electrolyte replacement. Do you know anything about this?
Kath says
I think it’s more about sweat loss than intensity.
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I’m not a fan of running on or near the beach simply because the salt in the air really bothers my skin, but it must be amazing to do that.
A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) says
Aww, it’s okay Kath. 🙂 I’d probably cry if I spilled my smoothie too! I’m in love with those things.
Tara says
You really cried? Or were you kidding?
Kath says
Kidding..
Tara says
Whew, oh my gosh. Thought you were hiding a whole mess of problems from us. 😉
Camille says
I never used to like Gatorade either. I’m still not a giant fan, but I kind of grew accustomed to it when it was passed out during races!
bethany says
that’s so funny: I used to think the SAME thing about Gatorade–all that sugar and food dye! but I reconsidered because I was getting so dehydrated after long runs and would lose all my body’s natural salt, which made my fingers swell. so crazy!
glad you’re enjoying the beach. I’m landlocked–my only hope is the pool.
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
Yay for runnig days – I had a great run despite the heat. It wasn’t on a beach though : (
Hannah says
Those cherries look so enticing – ruby jewels, really!
Ann Liu says
I’ve been reading your blog for a little bit now and I just wanted to say congrats on getting time to just RELAX! You seem to be having tons of fun! And I agree that running on sand is the best. And sand’s a great exfoliator! 🙂
