Yes yes yes!
Non-traditional KERF breakfast – half of the egg bagel we brought home yesterday topped with mashed banana, TJ’s Sunflower butter and TJs pumpkin butter
Ehhhhhh bagels just aren’t my thing. Or at least this brand isn’t. After the 30 minute slow line, leaving the lox off of yesterday’s lunch bagel and this crumbly, non-chewy bagel, I don’t understand what the hype was over Bagel Bin. Never again! Perhaps I need to pay a visit to Bodo’s here in Cville again – their bagels are much better!
Now coffee this morning was done juuuust right. Strong + dark!
Breakfast with a little Glee!! GLEE IS BACK! I have thought that all of this season’s episodes are lame, but this week’s was great. Good old covers and mashups.
Last night while climbing into the comforts of my cozy bed I realized I left my very favorite eye mask in the hotel bed!!! Nooooooooooo! My mom got me this Bucky brand for Christmas last year and it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Super lightweight, a velcro strap in the back so you can adjust it perfectly to your head (and no slipping!) and raised eye puffs so your eyes aren’t bothered.
I SWEAR to you all that light at night affects you more than you realize. Especially when the moon is full! I find if I don’t have a mask even my alarm clock light will wake me up. It took wearing an eyemaks on several flights to realize how much blackout helps with sleep quality. I urge you to get one of these and try it! I PROMISE you will sleep better.
Agenda
- Shower
- Wash sheets
- Clean floors + bathroom

Bottoms up!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I actually am not a huge bagel fan either (thought I really like Panera asiago cheese), because I don’t love bread. I usually get the weirdest looks… but bread just isn’t my thing.
Christine says
What a fiery looking tree!
I’m betting that you don’t have bagles like we do. Come up north and go to a real deli to see what all the hype is about. Thick chewy crust an doughy insides. (That said, i’ll still take oatmeal more times than not).
I always feel funny sleeping with a mask…it slides around and I just can’t get comfortable with one.
Call the hotel! See if they can get your mask to you.
Kath says
No we do have those kind of bagels (here at Bodos!) But this place was not them.
Lindsay says
Those eyemasks look awesome. Too bad I’m a back sleeper and the straps would probably drive me nuts!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I am not a huge bagel fan any more. I used to love them, but I have fallen out of love for sure. Lentil soup sounds perfect! I made that last week and am already craving it again today…maybe it is the rain? Have a great day and enjoy being home!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oooh I missed this past week of Glee but I’m glad to hear it was a better one. I was getting a little worried for a while because like you said, the plot was getting a little lame. LOVE the mashups!
Have fun today! 🙂
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I can’t sleep with eye masks– they bug the heck out of me!! I just try to get my room as dark as possible by drawing the curtains.
Mmmmm…I love bagels– but, only when they’re good. A bad bagel is NO good, for sure.
Kath says
You have to try THIS KIND of eyemask. It’s so different than the cheap flat ones!
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
I love bagels — although you have more control than me — I can’t have just 1/2 of a bagel.
I’ve thought about getting an eye mask because most nights I toss and turn quite a bit. I should probably get ear plugs too 🙂
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
I do enjoy bagels… perhaps too much.
I know a few people who sleep with eye masks. They really help keep the light out, which improves sleep tremendously.
Kelli says
I completely agree, Glee this season hasn’t been the same but last weeks episode was so good! 🙂
Sara says
Kath – Can you tell me the artist who did the Sonoma painting in your last post? It has the exact colors I need for our home. Thank you!
Kath says
I don’t know – I checked the back of the painting. We used to have his/her card there, but it’s gone in the move. It was from a gallery in Healdsburg
Lindsay says
i am not a fan of eye masks but i do have AWESOME light blocking curtains to make my room like a fortress!
Heather says
My parents have light blocking curtains that are amazing but I have never tried an eye mask – do you sleep with it every night?
I enjoy a good chewy bagel – so tasty. Unfortunately I haven’t had a good one in a while – I would love to try to make them myself.
Kath says
Every night now after some trials of light and realization that it works wonders
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
I looooove bagels! But, bad ones just aren’t worth it 🙁 Does Great Harvest make bagels? If so, bet they’re awesome!
Okay, you may have convinced me on the sleep mask! My Dad uses one and swears by it, too. However, what wakes me up the most at night is my kids!! Maybe if I get a sleep mask, I won’t “see” them, when they come into my room. 😉
Kath says
Ha!
Felicia (a taste of health with balance) says
Oatmeal > Bagels
JENNA says
bodos is the best! their bagles are crusty on the outside and perfectly chewy on the inside. they have great soup too!
i def need to try a sleeping mask. Is it something you have to get used to? it seems like the strap around your head would bother me the most.
Jenna says
I have that very same mask and my husband has a solid brown one just like it! They are wonderful – so much better than the regular ones that put pressure on your eyes. I started using a sleep mask in college when I shared a tiny box of a dorm room with my roomate – it made it easy to fall asleep if she still needed the light on. I’ve been through several different kinds, and this one is by far my favorite.
Amanda (Eating Up) says
I don’t understand the deal with bagels either! My roommate is obsessed with them, and I just don’t know why.
Louise says
The hotel will mail it back to you if you call. I leave things behind at hotels all the time!
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) says
I have a cheap-o eye mask I wear occasionally, but it bother it is pushes on my eye balls. Not cool. I’ll look into the one you mentioned. It might just be worthly of adding to my Christmas list!
Camille says
I feel like bagels are very hit or miss. It is way too easy to mess up a great bagel! So sad 🙁
Alina @ Duty Free Foodie says
I sometimes use an eye mask because Ryan almost always has the TV on while we are going to bed. Usually I pass right out anyway, but once in a while, the eye mask is essential.
Natalia - a side of simple says
<3 home! I can't wait to go home for Thanksgiving 🙂 Thanks for the info. about your eye mask. I'm a really light sleeper and just about everything disturbs me so I think I should really get one! Do I hear "stocking stuffer"?
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i do love my eye mask when i travel – definitely helps me sleep better. haven’t seen glee in a while, glad to hear it’s still good – i recently MC’d something with the actor who plays principal figgins so i should start watching again!
Katie says
That’s interesting about the reason why you wear the night mask.
I love bagels, any way they come. And I have to get some pumpkin butter soon.
I bet it feels so good to be home! I can only travel for so long before I start craving home and my normal routine like mad!
Christie {Honoring Health} says
I saw those eye masks at Whole Foods last week and considered getting one. I really struggle with even the smallest amount of light. Last night, we were running the humidifier which has a tiny on light and I kept tossing and turning because the light was keeping me up. Finally, I turned the darn thing off and was able to get some sleep. Maybe an eye mask is a good solution for the best of both worlds.
M.E. says
you just have to go to Bodo’s. I cut through their parking lot every morning on the way to class and I swear I could smell the doughy deliciousness from outside! Get a cleo salad with your bagel- cheap and GOOD!
stacey-healthylife says
I agree about breakfast. I love sticking with my traditional eats that leave me happy and satisfied.
Christin@purplebirdblog says
I have to sleep with earplugs because of my boyfriend’s snoring, but I’ve thought about adding an eye mask for added sensory deprivation bonus, lol! 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
i have yet to try the eye mask… you have me convinced 🙂
hungryforbalance.wordpress.com says
I love to travel but it’s also so good to come home to your own stuff isn’t it.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I looooove chewy bagels but sub par bagels are not worth it..
Nicole, RD says
So pretty there 🙂 Looks warm still…lucky!!
I should get an eye mask…it would help while the sun is getting up early these days!
Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather says
If i’m having trouble falling asleep I usually put my eye mask on and it really helps me fall asleep pretty quickly. I never wake up with it on though. Most of the time it’s either on the floor or under the covers… I must move around a lot.
Hope you can find a bagel you like!
Laura @ Blogging Over Thyme says
I definitely could have used this mask in college. Black out blinds are incredible too! You should try Alvarado street bagels (frozen section) at Whole Foods. Their sprouted and delicious, and have a ton of fiber and protein in them!
Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat says
Ooh I should really try an eye mask. I live in the city and the lights always bother me when I am trying to fall asleep!
Kat says
I need to always wear ear plugs because otherwise I cannot sleep and if I see even a tiny bit of light it interupts my sleep
For me, bagels usually don’t cut it but sometimes they do. Recently I bought some delicious pumpkin bagels!
Jil @ Big City, Lil' Kitchen says
Agreed – light definitely messes with you! Sleep-masks always end up on the floor though…I must fling them off in my sleep. That bagel looks delicious though!
Amber K says
I thought the same thing about Glee! I was so glad for this last episode, it brought it back to where it’s supposed to be!
Katie (The Boston Marathoner) says
I used to use an eye pillow at night, but it was heavy and made my eyes blurry from all the lavender. This eye pillow sounds amazing.
Thealogian says
Have you tried Hemp Bagels? 20 grams of protein per serving (although, eating just 1/2 and therefore 10 grams is a more reasonable portion size for breakfast). They are yummy plus nutrient rich. I haven’t tried a hemp bagel with anything sweet…smooshing some avocado and topping that with tomato is how I’ll usually have it, but I should imagine a nut butter and banana would be good too.
Caroline says
I find that with bagels from a bagel shop you really have to eat them the day of or they start to go stale. That’s probably what happened to you!
Megan (Braise The Roof) says
I love bagels but it’s so disappointing when you get one that’s old and dry. My favorite is Einstein Bros.- they have awesome flavors and they’re always fresh. 🙂
Krystina says
Crumbly bagel? Lame!
Sara says
I love that orange plate! Where did you find it?
Also, I love your blog! I think our taste buds were separated at birth 🙂 Everything you make/get is exactly what I would want!
Sara
Kath says
Pottery Barn!
Richard says
Call the hotel. They’ll mail it to you. They’re used to doing this for customers.
Lauren says
I totally agree about Glee. This past week’s episode was one of those that left me running to my computer to download the songs. Teenage Dream performed by the Warblers was amazing!
Wine Girl @ Kitchen Doesn't Travel says
I just got a Bucky eye mask a couple months ago and I LOVE it! I’ve been an eye mask wearer for years for the same reasons you mentioned and this one is by far the best! Sorry you lost yours. I think mine was only $12. You should be able to replace it easily. It was delivered pretty quickly. Welcome home!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Your eye mask reminded me of my dad – he wears an eye mask and I make fun o fhim for it. In fact, one year for Christmas, I got him an eyemask that said “princess” on it. 🙂
Claire (Low Impact Fashionista) says
I just made some lentil soup- SO GOOD. Also I’m thinking and eye mask would be a great addition to my life…seriously sharing a room is hard on my sleep.
lauri (redheadrecipes.com) says
I LOVE that eyemask!! I bought one a few years ago at Bed Bath & Beyond and then went back for another one several months later and they didn’t carry them anymore!! Thanks for finding them and giving the link!! Mine is all torn up, so can’t wait to get a new one!!!
Faith @ lovelyascharged says
Bagels are one of my favorite carbs ever, so a disappointing bagel is just such a fail at life!
Canadian says
You need a Montreal bagel. They’re the best. 🙂 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal-style_bagel
Amy says
Kath I have that same eye mask and it IS amazing. I LOVE it. So sad you lost yours- I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond- try there?
Erica D says
What fun prints you have! So many pretty swirls!!
Nicole @ Body By Beer says
I’m not a fan of bagels either, my MIL eats a cinn/raisin one EVERYDAY.
Casey says
I’ve been having a hard time getting my coffee/water ratios right on my new coffee machine… I like it on the stronger side as well. What measurements do you use?
Thanks so much, read you every day!
Kath says
There has been much household debate about coffee strength 🙂
I do a HEAPING half cup for 7 cups of water per the coffee pot’s lines. So that’s like 10-11 tbsp or about, 1.5 tbsp per coffee cup.
Matt likes to weigh it and determined he likes it at 8 grams per cup of water per the coffee cup line, which he says is 1.5 tbsp per coffee cup.
So I guess we agree 🙂
(I am specifically coffee cup as 5oz vs. an 8 oz measuring cup)
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
1. Love your anthro dishes!
2. I TOTALLY AGREE on the eye mask! I put my alarm clock face down, close my shutters, and turn my phone face off. I still use an eyemask and a sound machine! Maybe I’m just a bad sleeper?
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I don’t eat bagels often (I’d way rather have oatmeal!), but I do occasionally enjoy a big, doughy bagel straight from the bakery. Bonus if it’s sun dried tomato flavour!
Hannah says
Actually, I think that is a pretty traditional KERF breakfast! Sure, the carbs are different, btu its still banana, nut butter, and pumpkin butter. I’ve definitely come to expect that from you 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Glad your home!! It must feel soo
Veronica @ Full of Health says
Kath
OMG Thanks for the eye mask suggestion… What a difference
PS I have been reading for a while and really love your blog!
Susan says
Wearing an eye mask seriously changed my life. No word of lie. I bought one a few months ago when I moved into a room with sky lights and no curtains. I used to be up at 6am every day and thought it was just because my body hated me. Turns out, even the tiniest bit of light affects my sleep. Now I sleep like a ROCK. I too tested it out on the flight to San Francisco and I slept like a baby on a plane full of strangers. Probably one of the top 5 best buys EVER for me.
Nicole says
Finally picked up some of the TJ’s pumpkin butter this weekend because I needed it for a granola bar recipe. YUM! I can’t believe I have been missing out all this time!
Lauren says
I use a sleep mask sometimes on the weekends when I want to sleep in. But I’m kind of afraid to do it every night because I’m paranoid about it causing A) breakouts and B) wrinkles. (I know…paranoid.) Any thoughts on that? How often do you wash yours?
