SNOWWWWWW DAAAY!
I drove in snow for the first time when I took Karen to the doctor this morning. It was SCARY and I was slipping around. Not fun! Luckily we arrived and departed safely and I was home by 11AM and ready to go for a massive snow walk.
Karen, however, got stuck on our street when she left. Matt was able to help her out, but she ended up getting stuck on another hill on the way to her house and had to call AAA. Sounds like a snow day to me.
After Karen left, Matt and I bundled up for our walk and decided to walk downtown for LUNCH!
All bundled up we were pretty hot inside our ski pants and jackets. And I am in LOVE with my Ugg Brooms I got from Fleece Footwear for my birthday. They are SO warm and I’ve been wearing them nonstop since winter hit!
Shortly into our walk we ran into……FAITH + TATE! Who else!?!
They had just come from downtown, but thankfully they agreed to walk there with us – and join us for lunch!!
We walked straight to Eppie’s! I had a major craving for the vegetarian plate complete with cornbread!
Black beans, sweet potato, collards
And that slab of cake-like corny bread. A faaaaablous warm filling lunch!! [I fit most of it but gave Matt a potato and Faith some of my cornbread]
On the way home the snow lightened up a bit and we walked F+T back to their house and kept on going towards the UVA grounds
Back at home, we’re sipping tea. That was nearly a 3 hour walk! Hoping to build a fire tonight and cozy up with something comforting for dinner. [Given the car troubles, I postponed my haircut : ( ]

the snow always looks so beautiful when it first comes down, great pics!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Yikes! It’s finally snowing up here too, but nowhere near as much as you guys have- hopefully it will be a white Christmas!! Stay safe and warm 🙂
Kelly says
Beautiful! But how have you managed to avoid driving in the snow for so long? I wrecked my first car driving in the snow, but I’m a much more skilled snow-driver now.
Kath says
My dad never let me! And I guess since then I’ve just been lucky and cautious.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
We’re getting lots of snow in Alexandria 🙂 We’ve had the fireplace going all day 🙂
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
gah i would love to walk the mall in all that snow! so many good places for a homestyle lunch there.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
oh i am so jealous! what a beautiful snow day, and i’m so glad you guys really got to enjoy it 🙂
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
I can’t believe you hadn’t driven in snow before — it definitely is nerve wracking the first time. We still have a ton of snow from over the weekend and it has been so cold that it is here to stay 🙁
Those sweet potatoes look so good. The perfect comfort food.
Ashley says
Driving in the snow isn’t too bad as long as you use caution. We just got 10 inches with drifts in Wisconsin, and thankfully we are all dug out!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Lucky! I love to walk in the snow.
I can’t wait until we have our first snow day! All we had this morning was yucky ice in Charlotte. 🙁
I’m loving your new hat (I don’t say “toboggan” for a hat) 😉

Christin@purplebirdblog says
I’ve only driven in snow once and it was definitely an event! And uhhhh, creepy jacket spider!
courtney says
That lunch looks soooooo good on a snowy day! Or just a normal day 🙂
Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life says
I love snow days! I am jealous and now want snow really really really badly! I’m not a fan of driving in it though!
Stacey says
Aww, the snow looks so pretty! It’s supposed to snow in the UK too but I’m hoping it’s not going to be too bad as I have a flight to catch on Monday.
Jazz says
Lol, we have atleast 3 feet of snow all winter here.. but I know it is hard for people who havn’t driven in it before, I just find it amusing how people who arn’t used to it react.
My hubby’s family is Texan and when I was down there last there was a few cm’s and everything shut down, people were driving into ditches.. I think they think more gas is good in the snow.. but it’s not!
Carrie H says
I live in Wyoming and used to think like this too … I don’t know if it’s dry or generally more humid where you live, but it is very dry in Wyoming, but when places that are more humid get snow/cold temps, it immediately turns to ice. Realizing that kinda helped me understand the excitement/caution over what may only seem like a little snow to me! 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I am jealous! Our days has just been filled with gloomy icy rain. YUCK. Enjoy your warm evening!
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
I so LOVE a good snow day and cannot wait to visit home for Christmas so I can see some snow. This southern holiday thing may take some real getting used to.
Suzanne @ Continuing My Education says
You are putting together a perfect list of places I need to visit when I am home. Enjoy the snow in Cville! They are pretty slow at plowing so it is a good thing you have alternative forms of transportation!
Dorry says
FUN snow! It’s sunny and warm in Dallas and I’m ready for some wintry weather. That’s one of the best vegetarian plates I’ve ever seen. Yum.
Caree @ Fit-Mama says
Oohhh how I wish it was snowing here in TX! We RARELY get snow. Last year was rare and we got a couple good snow falls (around 4 inches). They say because of el nino its going to be a dry winter for us, boo! I am from MD/VA so I like an occasional snow fall!!
Jazz says
I’m going to Texas to avoid the snow! please stay warm! last year we went up and experienced that snow! booo.
Thealogian says
So jealous of the snow, we had snow earlier in the week, but today we got ICE! Give me fluffy, pristine snow anyday over ice-rain. Sure, it looks pretty on the branches, but then the branches go-boom!
BTW, I gave my dad Matt’ t-shirt. Viva Evolution is great…great nerd gift.
Lisa (bakebikeblog) says
What stunning snow pics – thankyou for sharing!!
Sarah @ See Sarah Graduate says
Your pictures are amazing! 🙂
barefootgirl says
so jealous!!! looks like SO much fun!!
PLEASE tell me you treated your Uggs before wearing them in the snow!! I ruined my first pair (back when they first came out) be careful how you dry them.. if the dry to quickly ( like next to a fire) the salt format eh snow will dry & leave a line in them….
glad to see you are feeling better 😉
Kath says
Uh oh…
barefootgirl says
my fingers are crossed for you 🙂
Krista says
Yeah I was just going to add to that, you have to spray them with the protectant spray before getting them wet.
Lauren says
I am a long-time reader, first-time commenter, but I decided you should know this information! I have washed my Uggs in the washing machine with a gentle detergent for delicates. Then air dry them (I put paper towels or washrags or something inside to keep their shape and absorb water). Then spray them with water-resistant spray. They always come out looking fresher and it gets rid of the water stains and salt stains.
Sam says
Kath!
Your boots came with scotchgard protection on them:)
C says there is a discount code running now “fleece10” will get 10% off of orders and there is free 2 day shipping.

That’s because tomorrow is the last day of finals! Except for the unlucky few who have a friday exam, everyone has peaced out! (I’m one of the unlucky few)
Erin (Travel Eat Repeat) says
Mmm… gingerbread… mmm…! I left work early to beat the rush hour snowy traffic but it still took me two hours to get home, sadly. Now I’m warmly in my house and about to head out again for gym +food. So pretty in the snow!
Alice says
The snow in our yard is already waist deep, so this is cracking me up! Enjoy the wintery weather (you can have some of ours).

Hey Kath– how do those boots handle in the ice?
Beautiful snow!!!
Kath says
They handled them great – hope I didn’t ruin them though!
Amy says
Ooh Eppie’s. I was going to get Eppie’s for lunch if I’d stayed at work. Instead I’ll get it tomorrow – that veggie plate is calling my name!
Glad you made it through the snow ok – I hate driving in it too 🙁
Kath says
How have we not ran into each other yet!?
Joy says
Looks great! We got snow up here in DC too. The funny thing is, today has felt like the warmest day from the past week; the wind from a few days ago was brutal!! Brrrr 😉 I think the clouds create like a thermal layer or something…I heard something like that one time so it must be true 🙂
L says
I grew up in MN so ended up doing quite a of snow driving. Agree w/ the other comments that said to be cautious. Honestly, the main things are 1) Stopping sooner and more gradually. Same thing goes for accelerating. 2) Going into any curves at the speed you want to be going when you’re on the curve itself (i.e. off ramps). You shouldn’t brake when you are turning because that can cause you to slide.
I’ve had friends who carry a bag of sand in their trunk–it helps weigh down the wheels and you can use it to help you gain some traction if you get stuck in snow. Floor mats also work in a pinch 🙂
Not sure how much snow Charlottesville gets but this might be an option: when my friend’s mom moved from CA to MN, she went to an empty parking lot and practiced skidding (she wasn’t doing donuts, I promise 🙂 to get used to getting herself out of a skid. If you’ll be driving in snow with any frequency, it might be worth an hour of your time to practice (and get more comfortable on the snow in general–not just when skidding). Some parts of snow driving are counter-intuitive (e.g. if you’re skidding you actually need to turn the wheel in the direction of the skid, not vice versa) and it’s easier to do the right thing if you’ve practiced.
Sorry…this ended up longer than I thought it would be. You’ll be great! 🙂
Kath says
I definitely feel more primed for Montana after today
christina cadden says
I wish it would snow here like it does there!
nicole says
The snow looks so beautiful and fun, and all of you look great in your snow outfits! Looks like you should be having a white christmas while I enjoy the desert.
Jaclyn says
Sounds like a fun day!
Errign says
Driving in the snow gets easier! I’ve been doing it since day one of getting my license practically & now, I’m more scared of the other drivers on the road than my own abilities!
Stacy R. says
Sometimes I wish I lived somewhere in CA that got snow, and then I remember things like having to shovel hour driveway in the morning to get to work and I’m thankful I don’t live in the snow 🙂
I LOVE that you and Matt will brave the elements to get some exercise and lunch! I really think since you’ve moved to CVille you have changed your way of thinking around biking/walking and maybe thats because in Charlotte you lived too far away from the downtown area, but none the less I’m sure you’re saving a lot on gas and the environment 😉
Canadian says
Shoveling snow is a great workout!
Stacy R. says
Haha very good point!
Kath says
I think it IS a reflection of where we lived in Charlotte. Nice neighborhoods, but not much to do but walk in circles. I love that we can have destinations here. [Although I did always bike to the gym in CLT!]
Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) says
You look so cute and cozy and adorable in all your winter gear!
I grew up in MN and then Chicago…and now live in San Diego (and for the last 10 yrs have lived in warm weather states, of which past 7 is So Cal) and i could never handle snow again 🙂 But you make it look so fun!
stacey-healthylife says
Looks like fun and a great way to enjoy the snow.
Lauren says
It’s so funny seeing Southerners in snow…Vermont has snow & winter from Nov-April (sometimes earlier/later). Good thing I love the snow!
Kiran says
I better get me some Ugg love 🙂 Love snow, can’t wait to experience some on our road trip next week! Yippie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That first picture is a great picture of you.
We have a place here in Atlanta that sounds like Eppie’s called Eats. I love getting their vegetarian plate.
Jennie says
You make me want to live where it snows! I live in AZ and it has been in the 70’s all week. I want winter!
BroccoliHut says
Talk about a quintessential Southern veggie plate! I’m getting so hungry just looking at that sweet potato!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
This sounds like such a perfect day in the snow! We spend so much time trying to avoid the snow and stay cozy indoors, but it’s nice to get out there and actually enjoy it too! 🙂
Mariana says
I love your adorable pictures.
Alaina says
Send the snow up here, please! 🙂
Jessie -- TheMessieKitchen.com says
I read this post on my phone last night and I must say, didn’t do beautiful Charlottesville on a snowy day any justice. Much better on my big screen computer at work — GOREGOUS!
Jen @ keepitsimplefoods.com says
What a fun snow day! We got a bit of snow here in DC yesterday, but not enough for a snow day.
Katie G. says
You and Matt are so adorable in your snow clothes. I had to force the bf out of the house for a snow walk last year, but I think he enjoyed it once we got going!
Your town is so super cute! I only wish I could walk to lunch (or bike on warm days) where I live now!
Janna says
The snow is a little heavier here…but I am glad to see you guys have good winter gear! You will need it in Montana! 🙂
Enjoy your snow days – wishing you a White Christmas!
