My favorite meals of the day go in this order:
- Breakfast
- Lunch
- Snack
- Dinner
Coincidence?
I think it must be something about sweet carbs for breakfast and savory veggies for dinner. I like sweet things. And carbs! The thought of a veggie scramble for breakfast turns my stomach. Especially with a hot sauce recommendation! Every now and then I can do bacon and eggs type things.
So my point is this: lunch did not always win second place. I used to prefer dinner because lunch always felt so awkward. I couldn’t put together good combos. But those times have passed!
SARDINEEEEES on a Sandwich!
I’ve been preaching sardines to patients at work. They have a trio of outstanding nutrients: omega-3, calcium, vitamin D. And for so cheap! Shelf stable! Delicious! EAT YOUR SARDINES! Once a week.
Matt made some sardine salad for me yesterday (and ate half for dinner). I’m not sure what all is in this, but it looks like cuc, pepper, carrot, and spices. Perhaps some dill?
With romaine, on a Dakota bun!
I’ve got a little extra salad that I’m bringing with me to let my preceptor try. If she hates it I might have to eat it up myself!
The produce. Also mandatory in any lunchbox.
"Burries" (I feel so lucky to have THREE kinds at once! That only happens in the movies! Usually I just stick to one at a time to save $$) and a bit of sweet greenery.
Just one of those days where chocolate is mandatory.
This girl is only halfway doing the Friday dance. But still excited – we have dinner plans out!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
I just got some fresh strawberries today – I’m so excited they’re in season! Nothing beats good berries 😀
Breakfast is my favourite too – it means Epic Green Monster to me, and that’s ALWAYS a winner 😛
Have a great day!
Sami says
12:26! Never fails 😉 Yummy looking Dakota bread.
Kath says
Hahahah. Love the idea of you waiting on it!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i’d say chocolate is mandatory EVERY day 🙂 i love your produce container…definitely want to eat everything in there!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
Many days, I eat sweet things like breakfast items all day long! I love them, too. 🙂
Marina says
Yummy looking lunch. I don’t know which looks better, that bun or the berries :))
I am curious, how are your canned sardines? Whole with bones? Recently I made myself a sardine salad, because of your praises to it, and I had the hardest time cleaning the bones out :/
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Fresh berries are my fav. I still can’t get into sardines.. I have a bunch of cans of them at home but they’ve been in my pantry forever because I can’t ever bring myself toe at them!
Lisa says
That bread looks fantastic! Packed with goodies.
Lauren says
I am the exact same way!! I can’t do savory in the morning. Like a fried egg with toast sounds so delicious at night but for breakfast, not so much. My roommate doesn’t get it, glad you do! 🙂
Ameena says
I love lunch the most because I am usually starving by 1:30 when I finally get around to eating!! I also love the after dinner chocolate I almost always have! That almost takes precedence over lunch. 🙂
zestycook says
Fun lookin’ bread and those peas are getting a lot of air time lately 🙂
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day too. And I’m with you, thoughts of savory things for breakfast kinda makes me gag a bit.. ha
Michelle says
Eggs in the morning in general used to turn my stomach. Then I realized it was more about how it was cooked and what was in it. For some reason, a fried egg leaves me feeling just fine, and if I scramble, it has to include other good things in it. Maybe it’s a too-much-fat thing?
I married a country boy, so we like our savory breakfasts. I think he got me into eggs. Hehe.
Erin (thehealthyapron.com) says
Glad to hear you promoting the sardines. I have never tried them myself…I think they have similar negative connotations like anchovies. I will have to try them though!!
Katherine says
That bread looks so great
no really
the nuts are AMAZING looking
andrea @ a cake for a wife. says
I too love sardines! And I also love all the disgusted looks I get when I eat them – heh. My absolute favourite thing to do with them is Alton Brown’s sardine/avocado sandwich. Total comfort food for me, and lots of good nutrients and healthy fats!
Brittany @ A Healthy Slice of Life says
eeks, not sure how I feel about sardines. I wouldn’t know what to do with them. I’ll just stick to salmon and wait until I’m feeling more adventurous 🙂
Emily- Inside/Outside says
what’s the best way to buy sardines? i picture them in a can… is there a better way? 🙂
Ann @ Appalachian Appetites says
that bun looks AMAZING!!
Wei-Wei says
My favourite meal is always breakfast. I feel so free, like I can eat anything! (At dinner, I’m much more pressured because I have to review my nutritional intake for the day and supplement what I’ve been missing. It’s hard, especially because of recovering from an ED.)
Lunch looks wonderful! Berries galore 😀

Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
If I had that lunch, I think mine would be the same exact order – YUM! – , but usually mine goes: breakfast, snack, dinner, lunch. (I love my sweet stuff!)
Angela (ohsheglows) says
I love that Matt helps pack you lunches sometimes…so nice.
I agree about lunches too. My old lunches used to be SO boring- the exact same thing every day. A pita, apple, carrot sticks, cereal. Yawn!
Emily says
You inspired me to buy the sardines…now if only I could bring myself to make a sammy with them. (I love tuna – so I think it’s just a mind thing, I know I’d love sardines in a sandwich or salad.)
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
I think my fave meals go in that order, too – I think that’s why breakfast foods…make their way into my lunches and dinners. haha That sandwich looks fantastic though!
Bethany @ More Fruit Please says
Breakfast is my favorite meal too. You can be so indulgent while still being healthy! I think that sandwich is causing some grumbling in my tummy – it looks delicious!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Snacks are always my favorite because I never try to plan them out and always eat what I crave! 🙂
Would you mind explaining the advantage of having your blog on a web host? I’m just wondering if it’s worth it for me to have my official website/blog on a web host, or to simply go through wordpress?
Also, do you own your own domain? If so, where did you purchase it?
Thanks!
Kath says
Advantage: design, advertising, creative freedom
Disadvantage: tricky to figure out, more money
Yes, I own my domain as well. Originally purchased through WordPress.com
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
I agree; nothing better than warm and sweet oats with nut butta!
Marisa (Loser for Life) says
Lunch is my favorite meal of the day! I love sandwiches!
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Breakfast is totally my favorite meal of the day…love all the sweet & carb-a-rific choices there are to choose from!
And I don’t know about you, but I think chocolate is mandatory every day! 😉
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
Love sardines. They’re my new snack of choice. Check out some other bloggers who love sardines here:
http://gamereviewwiki.com/bikinibirthday/2010/05/07/day-101-sardines/
lisa says
It’s so hard to choose – it all depends on what a meal consists of. Sometimes I get tired of eating a lot of the same breakfast foods, but I have some major favorites. I love lunch – sandwiches, yogurts, salads, soups. And lately for dinner we’ve been eating lighter meals, like platters of cheeses, veggies, olives, breads and crackers, and fruit. It makes dinner more like lunch, which I love.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Our sweet teeth would be great friends 🙂 I love bfast for that very reason–an excuse to chow down on carbz and shuguh!
My brother bought a couple tray cans of sardines and left them in the pantry….I might have to crack ’em open!
Gavi @ GaviGetsGoing! says
I definitely agree with you about breakfast being my favorite meal. I love having sweet things for breakfast (Greek yogurt with sweet gluten-free cereal, warm fruit compotes, gluten-free pancakes, etc.). Occasionally I crave some eggs with veggies, but most of the time I’m with you–bring on the sweet carbs! I love how creative you are with your lunches (and how beautiful they look!). You are definitely inspiring me to take more time packing my lunch and think outside the box (no pun intended!). Enjoy that delicious lunch!
Mama Pea says
I’m suddenly very glad I cannot smell through the computer 😉 I still love you, though.
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
How fun not knowing exactly what’s in the sardine salad. Makes it feel like you have a fancy takeout lunch. 🙂
Jenn
shannon (the daily balance) says
what i would do for a dakota bun….
i don’t want to know!
Erin says
Are you eating sustainable sardines? If so, could you indicate to the readers where they can be found. Also, are sardines among the many fish in the ocean that contain high levels of mercury? Are they farmed? I’m unfamiliar and would like more information 🙂
Over-fishing and the threat of shark extinction is actually the reason I completely stopped eating meat a few months ago. I couldn’t believe the fishing industry, and although I am from Maryland and LOVE all seafood I had to quit eating it completely thinking of the problems it has caused with ocean creatures.
Sarah says
Lunch looks delicious yet again!
For the vegetarians (like me)- are there any non-meat options that are comparable to sardines out there?
Kath says
Nothing is comparable 🙁
Lyndsey @ I'm Lyndsey says
Haha, we are totally opposites! I love Dinner the most, and backwards from there. Breakfast on the weekdays always feels like something I HAVE to do, but on the weekends I can actually make something savory and delish (but it’s still not better than a yummay dinner!)
runnerforever says
I hope your dinner plans turn out great! I am always in love with your breakfasts so I think those would have to be my favorite, but all of your meals look great!
Lyn says
omg, I want the BUN!!
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
I’m totally with you on breakfast! It has to be sweet and carby — none of that savory stuff until later!!
Okay, I’ve decided. I’m going to try sardines sometime this week. But NOT to eat for lunch at work. I’m too afraid of not liking it and then being stuck without a lunch!!
Veggielady4life says
Still haven’t tried the sardines… every post brings me a bit closer…
Carolyn @ lovinlosing says
I’ve been getting my fruit at Costco so I can save enough $ to have all three kinds of berries!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I keep thinking about what my favorite foods are…or what I can’t live without. Oatmeal is the 1st one. If nothing else…always oatmeal. Most people that I know think I am crazy for ALWAYS eating oats for breakfast (sometimes I change it up in the form of a pancake), but it just makes me happy. Next, I have to have apples and lettuce…not necessarily together, but those would be the 3 foods I could not live without. Don’t know why I just went in to all that with you…I blame the weather on my spaciness today. Your lunch looks yummy. Oh and I need a treat after dinner…it is a must!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
How do you prepare your sardines? For the longest time I didn’t actually believe people ate sardines, just like I still don’t believe people eat SPAM.
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I’m a huge fan and supporter of sardines too. And in sandwich form, they don’t even have the appearance of little fish.
Your berries and snap peas look so vibrantly colorful. Love it! 😀
Cristin says
Hi! I just bought some sardines for the husband I to try due to your posts! But I am still on the fence (I know, I know). Maybe you could post a educational sardine post? The best kind to buy, best way to prepare, etc. (maybe you have already done this-sorry if you have).
I don’t know why they get such a bad rap. But they do.
kate says
Haha I never have 3 berries at once either. Definitely like the movies!
Callie @ Callieflower Kitchen says
My order goes: breakfast, dinner, snacks, lunch. Lunch is never as exciting as dinner for me, it’s just kind of like a less-exciting dinner that gets me through to the real thing lol 🙂
Sara @ myfancytuna.blogspot.com says
You’ve totally got me wanting to try sardines and canned salmon for all of these salads! I have to say, that’s my meal order as well! I look forward to my yogurt snacks and breakfasts much more than dinner!
Thanks for “persuading” me to give plain yogurt another try – I got some organic plain yogurt and it’s delicious with toppings – still has that tang, but the toppings help balance it out 🙂
Andrea (Sweet N Green) says
Breakfast is #1 for me too, favorite meal of the day by far! Never tried sardines but I’ll admit the sandwich looks pretty tasty. Love the burries 🙂
Simply Life says
Oh those berries do look pretty amazing!
Joanne says
My favorite meals go in the same order. But when it comes to breakfast, I love my HUGE EggBeater omelet with all sorts of veggies AND the hot sauce. Just gotta love that hot sauce (except on racing weekends 😉 )
I wish I could eat sardines but they are just too fishy for me. I love fish but often the canned fish turns my stomach. I can be starving but if I get that “funny” feeling from fish, I can’t eat another bite. Weird.
The Dakota bun looks so good. I’m having a carb attack right now thinking about it.
Sarah (OC2Seattle) says
I’m still on the fence about lunch 😉 Too many at my desk I suppose. Hope you have a great time at dinner and Happy Weekend!
Kath says
Re SARDINES: They do have bones, but they are soft and are not crunchy. They only come in tins as far as I know.
They are a “Best Choice” by Seafood Watch. Wild caught pacific, reproduce rapidly and not high in mercury:

Nicole says
Each post about sardines makes me want to try. I was going to pick some up our last run to Trader Joe’s. I just may have to give it a shot. Your sandwich looks yumm!
Iris says
I like my sardines sandwiched in between 2 crackers. I get them with the bones for the calcium, but I have to work hard NOT to think about what I’m eating when I eat them!
Claire says
I love that order as well but honestly I would include dessert in there! I am such a chocolate girl that I like it for a snack, so I guess that could work too!
Courtney and Whitney says
On fridays, chocolate is always mandatory lol!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i’ve been blogging for almost a year and i’ve noticed that about 95% of my breakfasts are sweet! never would’ve thunk it.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I have a berry problem. I buy them and eat a ton. They are just so good and like candy since I can’t eat candy.
maria @ Chasing the Now says
That’s pretty much my order, too, although I might switch lunch and snack. I love snacking.
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
the Dakota bun looks so good! yum!
happy Friday!
Jillian says
Much respect to you for your *sardine diligence*, but I just can’t bring myself to do it! I’ll stick with my daily purified, enteric coated fish oil capsules 😉
Hannah says
Love sardines. Always have, and its awesome that you’re spruiking them. Too many people say “gross” without even trying them!
Christena says
I’m glad to see a food blogger/writer + future RD touting the benefits of sardines. I LOVE them, but always feel embarrassed about eating them because everyone thinks I’m crazy. 🙂 I love them with saltine crackers + mustard + dill. I haven’t tried a sardine salad, but yours looks good. I just worry that sardines on bread would make the bread soggy and “fishy.”
Marieke says
I tried the sardines in olive oil the other week and I really liked it. Do you think mackrel has the same nutrional values?
Marieke says
nutritional of course..
Jonny Hamachi says
That looks amazing.
