Fall Trip To OBX: Here’s a recap of our family fall trip to the Outer Banks!
Fall Trip To OBX
I love the beach in the fall!
The air is cooler, the crowds are gone, and the beach is just gorgeous! Thomas’s parents have been coming to the Outer Banks in September for many many years with the same friends who join them from New Jersey!
This year our house was in Southern Shores. It was literally RIGHT on top of the ocean and you didn’t even have to touch sand to get over the dunes! Just down the steps, across a deck, up the steps and you were there!
I could watch them play on the beach sitting on the steps : )
While we didn’t have a pool, which was fine for this time of year, we did have a hot tub!!!
The boys loved soaking in it after getting freezing in the ocean.
They also had breakfast delivered right next to the tub. How’s that for service!
The House
The house was spacious for our group and had PURPLE CARPETS! Loved them.
Beach Time!
It was chilly, but the boys had fun in the surf!
Trading A Pool For Pool
When they were swimming, the big boys were learning to play pool! Their new favorite activity.
Food
During our first few days here’s what we ate!
Chicken Dinner Winner
Our arrival night we had chicken, rice, and squash.
Yogurt bowl with Grandpa’s Famous Granola

Thomas’s Margs!
Red Drum + Spanish Mackerel

Banana Cream Pie
A Nona speciality with Heath on top!
See you tomorrow for part II with a fishing adventure!

Kath, how do you reconcile social/weekend/vacation drinking with the data showing that even small amounts of alcohol regularly increases your chances of diseases like breast cancer? There’s a whole bunch of research that shows even 3 drinks per week can significantly increase one’s risk of breast cancer (among other things, but that’s scariest to me). You have done posts on alcohol before, and you do mention “low risk” drinking = 1 drink/day for a woman, but now research is showing even less is really what it takes to prevent potential harm. For me, it’s something I struggle with, because at the end of the day alcohol is ethanol which is poison to our bodies. I used to love wine, especially on vacation, but have stopped all together once I really dug into the research and understood what I was doing to my body.
I would love you to weigh in..

This is something I think about all the time! It’s one of the many reasons I try to drink less. While I don’t have a plan to give up alcohol completely, I am always trying to minimize consumption and drinks per week while still enjoying it when I feel the event warrants like social occasions, vacations, etc. I recently discovered Athletic Brewing’s NA beers and really like them, and I drink kombucha on weeknights frequently.

Life is about quality … if you want to have a drink of wine …have a drink !! There are daily things in our lives that expose us all to carcinogens . Live life each day!
Kath Younger says
Totally agree 🙂

And sometimes no matter what you do, breast cancer still comes to you and those you love. I’ve never consumed alcohol and yet as a 40 year old mother of two young kids, I found myself sitting in the doctor’s office listening to that diagnosis. I suspect we have far less control in life than we imagine.
Kath Younger says
I’m so sorry you had to go through that. There are also people who drink a ton and never get it. There are so many factors at play.
Christine Whittington says
Agree, and there are so many things you can do health-wise to balance any risks.

I totally agree with moderation, including alcohol. I enjoy the Athletic brews. Sometime try one of our Colorado alcohol AND carb AND sugar free calorie free brews–Hoplark! I love the Citra. Some are also combined with tea. They are great and very hydrating.

Excellent question and information, thank you Olivia.
