I swear, I had the equivalent of 1.5 drinks last night. Maybe 4-5 small 2-3 ounce pours. And I can totally feel it. I am so sensitive! Slightly headachey, dehydrated, systems off. I love enjoying a few drinks so much – not for the buzz, but because I really enjoy the taste, but sometimes I wonder if I should just give it up! Feeling badly is never, ever worth it.
Maybe it was the 2 sips of pisco!!!
Smoothies seem to be the best hangover cure.
Especially when packed with fruit and clusters!
The Mix
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 banana
- 1/3 cup cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup frozen berries
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Cville Cluster Granola
- Coconut
HOT coffee + choffy! Well I’ll be!
Today is a logistics nightmare. I’m trying to figure out how to get myself from home to the bakery without a bike and with 2 meals (one being gazpacho) and showering gear + clothes for day + night. I’m thinking I need to walk with a backpack. Or just drive. But then my bike is still stuck at the bakery! Our problems would just be solved if we lived just a 2 miles closer!!
Going to noontime Pump today since I’m speaking to a weight loss group tomorrow and will miss my usual glass. And we have to ship out the massive OpenSky order (the first 300 bags of it) and we are providing bread for a fun rooftop event tonight at Second Street Gallery!
Lisa @ Sunny Seed Stories says
I love how your smoothie matches your placemat! Also, on a very random note, the movie that goes by the same title as your post is one of my absolute favorites!
Baking 'n' Books says
Ditto about the movie ;
On another note – the smoothie color is so beautiful! And the coffee in the first shot – it kind of looks blue to me too!
Busy day…hmm…maybe don’t take Gazpacho today to avoid spillage?!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
The older I get (32!), the more I feel like that, too. I really LOVE red wine, but maybe it doesn’t love me. I think about that all the time. It’s not really worth how crappy I fell after 2 glasses of wine. Not fair.
On a brighter note, your smoothie looks refreshing!
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
Your smoothie is such a gorgeous color! It matches the flowers on the placemat perfectly!
Good luck with everything you have to do today!
Meg says
Most beauuutiful smoothie ever, Kath!
Best of luck today 🙂 Hope your “nightmare” turns into more of a dream. 😉
JessicaR says
I gave up drinking for the exact reasons you mentioned. I just couldn’t handle feeling bad! Even a half glass of wine started to make me feel yucky the next day. I know women who can down an entire bottle of wine and wake up feeling like a million bucks, but I’m just not one of them.
Jennifer says
I am the same way. I had one glass of white wine last night and ended up with a horrible headache hours later. I can’t drink red wine for that same reason so I hope white isn’t affecting me now, too.
Good luck today with your “nightmare”. I’m sure you’ll work it out. 🙂
I, too, love the color of your smoothie. It looks so refreshing and sounds like the perfect cure after a night of drinking.
JenATX says
Haha I am one of those women who can drink the entire bottle without much effect…But even so, sometimes I don’t want to drink just because its unhealthy & expensive. At those times I pull a “Kath” as I say to my boyfriend and just drink out of tiny glass. Sometimes the tradition of pouring a cocktail or being able to participate in a group that is enjoying a cocktail outweighs the calories
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Ditto re: whole bottle. 🙂
And ditto re: trying to use a small glass, sometimes. 🙂
~
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I was actually telling someone the same thing the other day. I don’t know if I’m just getting old or if I’m just becoming sensitive to alcohol. If I drink more than a glass of wine I instantly get a headache. I think I’m just getting old 😉
Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites says
I must say that that is one of your prettiest smoothie bowls yet! I love the bright rich purple color and the polka dot bowl! I am a sucker for polka dots! Looks revitalizing and I hope that it worked to sooth your hangover! (Coconut water works wonders for that too! Lot’s of good ‘ol electrolytes) Have a fabulous day Kath and good luck figuring out how you’ll be getting to and fro!
maggie says
“hungover” after less than two drinks? come on, kath.
KathEats says
Do you think I’m making it up!?
maggie says
nahhh but that stinks. or maybe its a good thing ?
James says
so condescending so early in the day? Come ON, maggie.
Kate says
Are Caitlin’s dogs sniping at each other?
Jen says
this is HILARIOUS. and so embarrassing it took me only like 3 seconds to figure out HA! love it.
KathEats says
LOL!
Sof says
I do not feel well after less than two drinks either, everyone is different.
Emily says
I also find that the older I get, the more alcohol affects me the morning after. I love love red wine, but it makes me feel worse than white, so I try to stick with white (sigh). The key for me, even if it is only a couple glasses, is to drink a lot of water before bed. If I have more than a couple, I take advil at night. I try not to do this too often. I also try to avoid drinking on an empty stomach!
Cait's Plate says
I have that same bowl (and if not the exact same then one very similar)! I love it – it makes mornings so cheery and happy.
That first picture is awesome. The smoothie that perfect purple color and that amazing place mat and spoon – I’m lovin’ it.
I’m with you on the alcohol sensitivity. I do okay with a small pour of wine but anything over that and I’m definitely feeling it. I’ve just never been a good (or a big) drinker…though speaking of drinking, I keeping seeing the tweets from your sister about the amazing cocktails she’s having on her trip and I gotta say, I think it’d be worth feeling sick for some of them – they sound so good!
Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites says
Where did you get this bowl!? I LOVE polka dot dinnerware!
Cait's Plate says
I honestly don’t remember where I got mine…Kath?
Jen says
I have a coffee cup in the same pattern that I got from Pier One so maybe that’s where she got the bowl? Just an assumption! 🙂
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Your smoothie is such a pretty purple! I love adding spinach to all of my smoothies, but I do miss the colors (not that green isn’t pretty too…). 🙂
Hayley @ Oat Couture says
I’m the same, no matter how many berries I add the spinach always seems to overpower colour wise!? End up with a murky brown / green… luckily it tastes waaaaay better than it looks! 🙂 Hope you sort out your nightmare day without too many hitches! 🙂
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
I am the cheapest date ever – it’s a one drink maximum for me! I can totally feel it the next day if I have more than that!
Hope your day goes well, Kath!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
I absolutely love the colors in the first photo. Beautiful! Purple is my favorite color, so perhaps I am a bit biased? 😉
I VERY MUCH admire your desire/ability to drive as little as possible… but maybe you just need to take the car today? Good luck with the logistics!
(Logistics? Now I’m thinking about UPS – thanks, marketing!).
~
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I try to stick with just one drink at events because more than that usually gives me a headache — especially if I am outside in the heat and not drinking enough water.
I hope the smoothie helps!
katie @KatieDid says
Do you feel noticeably better if you chug some water before bed? That always seems to help me, but sometimes no matter how much water I can manage to chug the drinks always win over my headache.
Could you drive and then fit the bike into the car for when your on your way home?
KathEats says
Water never helps me. No matter how much I drink. Or rather, it helps a little bit, but it never cures
Lauren says
coconut water helps me!
Jessica says
Straight Alka-seltzer, lemon lime flavor after drinking was my go-to before I went to bed. Swear by it. Not sure if you are opposed to it having aspirin in it though.
Kiran @ KiranTarun.com says
Ditto with Lauren – try loads of coconut water 🙂 Get well soon!
jane says
i agree!! i had a margarita and 2 beers on tuesday night. then came home and had a full dinner and chugged sooooo much water! (it was a really small margarita so it really wasnt all that much liquor) and i felt terrible the next day. headachy-exhausted blahh. i feel you kath.
Nikita says
I feel the same way when I drink, especially wine. But it could be lack of proper hydration, because last time I drank I made these watermelon-white wine slushies and must have had 3 and yet I woke up hangover free! I think it was all the water and vitamins in the melon!
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
It’s a smoothie in a bowl kind of morning over here, too! I love your napkin (placemat?) so cute!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
My favorite dishtowel yet! The blueberries I had in my green smoothie were horribly ugly looking but yours is pretty!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
That color of that smoothie is breathtaking! Mine never get like that, they always have a rather unappealing color as a matter of fact haha
Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well says
I hope you’ll recap what you talk about for the weight loss group tomorrow! I’m interested to hear that info since I’m working on a fitness program for faculty and staff at JMU right now. We’re actually looking for a speaker in the coming months….
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
PURPLE! my favorite color! It matches so nicely with your place setting too 🙂 Perfectly summer!
Good Luck getting to work with those meals.. no bike. You were able to put 300 orders together yesterday?! That is AMAZING!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
WOW sounds like a busy day!!! Does your bike fit in your car? Maybe you could drive and put it in there if it does? Just a thought! Hope everything goes well!
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
I was just going to ask whether you can just drive your bike back home. Maybe bring a wrench to dissassemble part of the bike so it can fit?
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
When I saw this post title I thought of the movie ever after haha! love how your smoothie matches the placemat so perfectly! Looks like a busy thursday for cha! have fun 🙂
Emmy (WIne and Butter) says
Smoothie looks AMAZING!! I also just wanted to say that my husband and I are hoping to open a Deli in London in the next year or so…. reading your stories about the challenges/ rewards/ general lifestyle changes involved in opening a business is proving super helpful! xox
KathEats says
Good luck!!
Errign says
I hate the morning after feeling of drinking, so I don’t drink too much anymore. I’ll have the occasional drink or two out with friends and that’s it. Thankfully, if I keep it to that much, I feel okay in the am, but anymore than that & I’m miserable. I’m so not a medication-taker, but the only thing I’ve found to make me not feel like death is excederin migraine and two BIG glasses of water straight off.
Aimee says
Maybe something that might put the awful feeling into perspective is that if you had the higher end of your guesstimate, 5 3 oz pOurs, that’s the equivalent of 3 drinks. It is so hard to judge little splashes! And restaurant pours are getting bigger and bigger I swear.
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
Totally feel the same way about drinking! Well, I don’t even like the taste of alcohol, so there’s really no point of me drinking 🙂
Margo @ peanut butter trees says
Sounds like a super busy day! I’ve had those days where I just can’t figure out how to get myself where I need to be with all my food, clothes, computer, etc etc without lugging a giiaant bag and sweating the way there. Oh logistics! I hate that feeling of just a slight hangover from drinks (it’s usually 2-3 for me). You just don’t feel right and it stinks. Hope the smoothie cured you!
Laura @ Cookies vs. Carrots says
I am the same way! Sometimes a half glass of wine will give me a hangover, but other times I’m fine! I generally try to chug a glass of water before and after drinks, which I find helps!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
LOOK AT THAT COLOR!!!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
love those purple smoothies!!
Alex says
Wow, that picture is visually so great! Love the colors and how everything seems to match perfectly. As someone else noted, even the coffee seems to have a blueish tint.. did you crank up the cyan saturation in lightroom?
KathEats says
Not much if at all!
Emily @ One Sweet Vegan says
I love the color of your smoothie with that adorable towel!
Kate @ NaturaStride says
That is the most purple-y smoothie ever!! Yes – smoothies are a great hangover cure – but nothing beats a run and sweating it out! Kind of torture, but I always feel so much better after. So, good for you for squeezing in body pump – you’ll feel great this afternoon.
I’m the same way with logistics – I biked to work today with a backpack, purse in my basket, AND a messenger bag. My balance was totally off – but I made it!
Have a great one!
Clara says
same problem here. two very small caipis yesterday and I feeel so sluggish and dehydrated today. Like I drank an entire bottle of whiskey or something 😉
Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
I am so sensitive too. I barely ever drink anymore so I feel like garbage after a few drinks. It’s not worth it!
veganlily says
Hey girl! You should try putting some spinach and/or kale into your smoothies. Well, come to think of it, I think you do already do that sometimes. I find that dark greens really help the dehydrated/slightly hungover feeling. Particularly if you use spinach, you will not even really taste it – I pack my blender with baby spinach and can barely taste it. Kale or collards, on the other hand, you will taste a bit more, so you want to be more judicious. Just a thought…
KathEats says
I do that from time to time but was too lazy to visit the garden to pick some
Nic says
Your smoothies always look so yummie but this one!
Scrumptious… Would love to eat one right now!!
Oh and nice typo: “…and will miss my usual glass.”
🙂 Have a wonderful day!
Meredith says
Kath – didn’t your college “classes” teach you that the recipe for a hangover = wine + beer + liquor?! 😉 I almost always stick to one – usually wine, sometimes beer, hardly ever liquor. It seems like you usually do that too, so you are probably just feeling the effects of mixing the 3 last night. The best hangover cure is OJ (before bed is best)! All that Vitamin C does wonders! Probably why your berry smoothies work best for you 🙂
Have a great day!
Jessoca says
Yes, this! They say never switch your drinking path, and if you do have to, try to stick to clear drinks (vodka/white wine) .
KathEats says
I don’t think there’s any truth to that wives tale – I think it just means you drank too much!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I’m becoming more and more sensitive to alcohol. I’m down to only 1 drink at night otherwise it’s just not worth it in the morning. When did I become so old!?
faith says
Don’t blame the pisco! It was an innocent bystander to the wine. 😉
Your smoothie was gorgeous!
Paige @ RAN says
I love the purple color of the smoothie with the purple on the placemat. So pretttty 🙂
alana (at) the food says
i think you need one of these!
http://www.chariotcarriers.com/english/html/index.php
we don’t have kids, but we have a baby charriot attached to our bike that makes like so much easier! so much less hassle to bike to the grocery store now!
you can get them for as little as $150 and they will change your life!
Angel7 says
Lovin’ the looks at that smoothie!

Rachel says
Love the pretty purple pictures! Sounds like a back rack for your car would make things a lot easier. 🙂
Meredith says
Oh dear. I just joined OpenSky to get the CVille package (the clusters always look uh-mazing in your pics) and now I can’t stop looking through all the fun stuff on there! That place could be very dangerous for me!
Rachel says
er, bike rack
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I love the bright purple!! Sounds like a busy day ahead so I hope you’re feeling better! I’m a lightweight so 1.5 drinks would have me a little achey too! 🙂
Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) says
Who knew that a SIAB could be so pretty to photograph ?? I love the first shot!
Hillary says
I hear ya, Kath. I realized right after college that I can’t handle drinking at all. I swear it has something to do with my size (I’m just under 5’2. Where’s all the wine supposed to go?!). I definitely did my fair share of drinking in college, but I hated feeling like crap for 48 hours after. Now I can enjoy a glass of wine, but that’s my limit before I fall into hangover territory. No drink is worth feeling that awful!
Mai says
That is such a pretty color! I’m going to have to try that combination. 🙂
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
Your smoothie is such a pretty purple color! Bright and cheery!
Katie says
I too am super sensitive to alcohol. 🙁 I haven’t decided to cut it out completely but I have cut back significantly (not that I ever consumed *that much in the first place).
The color of that smoothie is amazing – I hope it helps the hangover! 🙂

Halley (Blunder Construction) says
I can’t stand hangovers, either. The funny thing with me is I often feel better after a night of whiskey-drinking than if I just have one glass of wine with dinner! My stomach is very all-or-nothing.
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
That purple is so vibrant! I know I just commented about the color of the watermelon yesterday, but man…the food you eat is so pretty! 🙂
Becca says
Such a gorgeous color. Love, love, love it!
As for preventing hangovers, maybe you need to replenish electrolytes before bed, so as someone suggested, maybe some coconut water or lemon juice in water before bed?
Ambre says
Your smoothie looks yummy – and I love that it matches the placemat (like others have said).
I ordered from your OpenSky yesterday, and CANNOT wait to receive the product!! Sounds/looks so yummy! Wish I had a GH close to me, but there isn’t one in Dallas.
Take care!
r8chel says
Kath, I applaud your commitment to biking and walking a lot, but I don’t think any of us would think less of you if you used your car + a bike rack a little more often. 🙂
Marissa says
i’m sensitive to alcohol just like you. i gave it up about 2 years ago, and have never looked back. social situations can be awkward at times (especially living in a ridiculously alcohol inundated city–new orleans), but i just let people know i do what works for me & not anyone else!!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I all of a sudden don’t feel as busy anymore 😉
Good luck with all that!! Love the purple smoothie <—sooo pretty!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
cottage cheese in smoothie sounds delightful! my husband wouldn’t drink it though. does matt?
KathEats says
Yup!
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
Such a pretty colour! And it matches your placemat 🙂
Violet says
Is 4-5 2 or 3 oz. pours really equivalent to 1.5 drinks?
I typically consider a serving of wine to be about 4-5 oz. Therefore, 8 oz. (or 4 2 oz. pours) or 15 oz. (or 5 3 oz. pours) of wine would be approximately and respectively 2 servings or 3 servings. I’m sure you’re better at the math than I am (RD and all!), but maybe you had more than you thought?
Big fan of the pisco sour. But yes. It does pack a wallop the next day. The purer the pisco the better, but it’s typically not a finely distilled liquor.
Personally, I can never mix liquor with anything else – that’s the recipe for a terrible hangover for me.
KathEats says
Yes, I’m sure I underestimated!
jenna says
what a vibrant way to start your day 🙂
Hilary says
I am so jealous of all your gorgeous linens and I love the fact that your smoothie matches so perfectly with this one!
Ali says
I use a ball jar to transport soup – leak proof, and it won’t hold on to the smell or colour. Good luck with your busy day!

I am soo jealous of your smoorthie,it looks soo good and very pretty too!lol

Can’t wait to get my Open Sky order!

i feel like i drank a keg.
NOT.
KIDDING.
horrb.s. and not worth it.

“I am so sensitive! Slightly headachey, dehydrated, systems off.”
and
“Feeling badly is never, ever worth it.”
I used to drink.like.a.fish
But in the past 5 yrs have had the combined total of maybe 5 drinks? maybe? Life just changed after I had my daughter and I dont miss it, I feel badly when I do, and so I just…don’t. I miss the memories and the camaraderie but I am so sensitive, too, Kath!
I love the purple. The pictures. So beautiful!!
Kelsey says
I recently tried Goody’s Extra Strength Headache Powder. It works miracles for hangovers. In fact, after I took it I went on a 10 mile bike ride and felt amazing! I poured two pouches onto a spoon and took it with water. It does taste a little bit chalky but it has great results!
Baking 'n' Books says
I was wondering – I don’t drink much, but even if I have a small glass of wine or a vodka/tonic in the evening – the next morning my eyes/face are puffy and I feel off…I know dehydration would lead to puffiness – but for that small of an amount?!! And I always drink water with it too…is allergies to that possible? I never had a problem with liquor before though…
Nicole @ Giraffelegs says
I just gotta say that your layout for the blog is beautiful. It’s so eye catching!!
KathEats says
Thanks!

I love your placemat. “and they lived happily ever after” How sweet and pretty.
You always have the perfect placemat for your pictures.

I managed to stretch out my consumption of the Savannah Bar I bought on Saturday this whole week, but today is the last piece! It was delicious while it lasted :]. Apparently University of Virginia has a dietetic internship, I have a few more years till I graduate but I liked that school and the area; I might apply!
KathEats says
WOW, that is quite the stretch!
Molly @ RDexposed says
I am in love with this intense purple breakfast!
Spinach also helps with my hangover cure (read: a drop more than 1 beer or 1/2 stout!)
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
I feel you COMPLETELY on being a lightweight!
Once my boyfriend and I opened a bottle of white wine, I drank 1/4 of my GLASS, then had to lay down because the room was spinning 🙁
Hannah says
When I read your breakfast posts at work, all i do is long to go home that evening and make a smoothie. But then I get home, and it’s freezing, and I never do….
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’m such a lightweight too. I drink a lot less often now compared to earlier on in college just because I hate the feeling of being hungover so much. 😛
sassy shandy says
Kath, I think you should just wait til you get pregnant, and decide once you’ve had your child, whether or not you want to give it up altogether! Til then, just drink plenty of water along with your drinks!
Shana says
That smoothie looks incredible! How is the texture with the cottage cheese? Ricotta cheese might be tasty too-plus it has less sodium!
Samantha says
I always have placemat envy! I feel so weird saying it, but your table linens are always so cute!
