Farewell to our island days for now! We will be back this summer.
Our final day at Bald Head was warm and sunny again. I made a lovely whipped banana oatmeal with some melty Peanut Butter and Co Smooth Operator. SO GOOD!
By mid-morning, Thomas took Mazen to the driving range and mom and I went on a long beach walk. I finished up by walking up and down our street until the boys came home listening to a podcast.
We had a late lunch – more sammies – and then headed to the beach for the afternoon.
This sweet boy makes friends so easily. I think he had 10 friends throughout the week. It’s such a blessing since he doesn’t have a sibling to play with, and Bald Head was crawling with kids on spring break.
We headed back to the house for showers to discover that the power was out on half the island! So random. With the sun still up it wasn’t too much of a big deal, although I ran out of hot water for my shower.
We went to the BHI Club for cocktail hour by the fire pit and live music.
Mazen was freshly showered but worked up a nice sweat complete with grass stains while we waited for our table. Again, he made friends and raced the big boys across the lawn over and over. We had to drag him inside for dinner at sunset!
For dinner I had the pear + arugula salad with blue cheese and candied nuts. The best salad combo!
Plus a crab cake sandwich and fries.
We left on the 9:30 ferry the next day and made our way through a rain and snow storm back to Cville.
Our travels went by fast though because we listened to the entire Dirty John podcast. It’s a true crime story about a sketchy man named John and his involvement with a family in California. Definitely worth listening to! I would love any more true crime podcast suggestions!
Back at home I wanted to keep cocktail hour going minus the booze, so I tried this Seedlip non-alcoholic distilled spirit that the company sent me to sample. You’d never know there was not alcohol in this – it was great! The Garden 108 flavor, pictured below, reminded me of gin + fresh peppers and has a strong herbal aromatic profile. I mixed it with an elderflower tonic. They also make a spiced option called Spice 94. If you are not a drinker or are just looking for some great mixer options, these are delicious!
Thomas’s sweet mom left us Mona Lisa Pasta ravioli and sauce in the fridge for dinner, and we cooked that with some frozen peas. It was so nice to be able to unpack and not rush to the grocery store.
On Sunday morning, Mazen and I had a stuffed animal karaoke session in bed before heading down for coffee and breakfast. Liony sang “The Circle Of Life.”
We had eggs and biscuits with jam for breakfast. (Another treat from Eileen!)
Mazey went to spend the day with Matt, and after a quick gym session, I packed up a picnic and joined some girlfriends at Jefferson Vineyards for the afternoon. It was juuuuuuuust warm enough to sit outside. (Although we were all bundled up!)
Hope you enjoyed your weekends!

Looks like such a great weekend and trip!

Mazen sure is sociable! I grew up as an only child as well and was super shy! 🙂

Dirty John is on my list! I just discovered My Favorite Murder and really enjoy that true crime podcast. The two women that do the show are pretty funny so despite hearing about horrible murders, I still laugh multiple times when listening to one of their episodes. FYI, the language is pretty strong. I also enjoy Casefile. The beach looks beautiful!!

I loved the Dirty John podcast! I’d recommend a podcast called Homecoming, it’s fiction but it’s really binge-worthy and has an great cast (Catherine Keener, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris). Did Mazen listen to the Dirty John podcast with you? I’d think that would totally freak a kid out!!
KathEats says
Haha no way! He had Despicable Me on with headphones 🙂

I loved Dirty John! I also really enjoyed Up & Vanished, which is a series about a missing person. Small Town Dicks is a great one as well. Please share if you hear of More!

Hi!
Dateline had an episode with the ‘real people’ of dirty john–totally fascinating….I think you can find it on demand.

Oh cool! I googled their photos so I could picture them but an interview would be cool!

It’s amazing that such smart people could make not so smart choices…my husband and I were like…..WHAT??? LOL
KathEats says
I know!!!

Glad you had a fun trip! I loved dirty John too! But all I could think when you said you listened to it in the car was what did Mazen think?! LOL!
KathEats says
He was watching a movie with headphones!

The Seedlip is intriguing, I’m going to check it out! I always appreciate your “real” input on items/products. Are you wearing Rothy’s in the pic of your feet up? What’s your take on them?! As always, thanks!
KathEats says
LOVE THEM!!
Stephanie says
I was going to ask the same question! I’ve been eyeing the Rothy’s on Facebook for a couple of weeks now! Good to hear a “review” from someone I “know” and not just random Facebook people. I might just have to go buy a pair.

It looks like you had such a great trip!

I always love reading your posts about your family trip to Bald Head Island. It looks so pretty and inviting.
KathEats says
Add it to your bucket list : )

I’ll need to add Dirty John to my list! I really like Breakdown and right now it’s following a trial as it’s happening. You can also listen to past seasons in it’s entirety. I also like Real Crime Profile.

For true crime podcasts, the gold standard, IMO, is the first season of “Serial”. It’s the best! I recently enjoyed both seasons of “Missing and Murdered”, those were really good. And I’m right in the middle of “Up and Vanished”, totally hooked and binge-listened all weekend. Haha!
KathEats says
I loved the first season of Serial! Just wish we had a better idea of the truth : ) I think Up & Vanished is our next car trip one to start.
Linda @ the Fitty says
Ill have to check out Dirty John podcast!

Loved Dirty John! Was so mad at the mom! My three recommendations for you are S-Town (by the makers of Serial), Alone (also about bad romantic choices) and My Dad Wrote a Porno which I promise will make you LAUGH! (Adult listening only.)
KathEats says
Loved S Town!! Wrote down the other two 🙂
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says
I forgot about Dirty John, I started it and totally forgot about it!

I’d recommend My Favorite Murder (actually laugh/smile quite a bit while listening) and Young Charlie to add to your list, but others I listen to include: Criminal, Sword and Scale, Sworn, and Up and Vanished.

Dirty John was an awesome podcast, very addictive! I looked up the real people afterwards and was quite shocked because John didn’t look *at all* how I thought he would!
I really enjoyed S Town too, which was perhaps more mystery than crime – very compelling story. For someone who doesn’t enjoy gory stuff, or crime TV shows even, I’ve found this style of podcast so addictive. The stories are so interesting. I’ll be adding some of the others that people have recommended here in the comments to my list! 🙂
KathEats says
I agree! Ive never been a crime person but I have loved these podcasts!
Philippa says
Right, I’m officially hooked on Up and Vanished now – thank you KERF readers 🙂

Missing and murdered: finding cleo is so well made and intriguing

Disgraced is about singers that commit crimes. The first one is about the supposed murder of Jerry Lee Lewis’s 5th wife.
