I like hole foods, like donuts! Healthy whole wheat baked donuts, of course! 🙂 Everyone needs more food ornaments. Here are all the donuts, or maybe you’d like a kale ornament for your tree?! I also love these. I actually do have a pickle on my tree! Today was my grandmother’s birthday, and I know she would have loved all of the foodie ornaments.
Mr. Mazen is feeling awfully festive this week, being out of school and everything. He was literally counting down the days!
I am loving having more time for breakfast.
Simple whole wheat French toast: I just crack two eggs in a bowl, add a little cinnamon and a splash of half and half. That’s usually perfect for two pieces of bread, but I do pour the rest of the batter on the final slice and turn it into a French toast omelet.
Served with Land O Lakes pumpkin butter and Cuties!
I’m hoping to do a little more “what I ate / daily life” style blogging over the holidays. I am still trying to find the best balance between KERF’s roots and the work flow that keeps me the most sane. Bear with me if I miss a day here or there (and remind me how easy and fun it is simply to post photos of real food!)

I have a pickle on my tree too! We started the tradition when I was little since we have some German in us and it’s one of my favorites. Plus, the pickle ornament is always a conversation starter hehe. Have a beautiful holiday week, Kath!

Haha I think I should get into the tradition too!

Kale and donut ornaments sound perfect. A nice replacement for the pickle, I’d say! 😉

I know for me on my blog it’s always a tough balance but I do love reading other people’s what I ate style posts!

Hi Kath! I’ve been reading you blog since the three meals a day posts. Feels like I’ve followed you forever!
I started reading because I was also trying to lose a few pounds, and I figured that as a RD, you would be a perfect person to look to for inspiration. And like you, I’ve grown and changed a lot since those early days – kids, career, moves. I was happy for you when you went to a different format because of being a busy mom. That totally made sense to me.
I was reading your budgeting post yesterday with interest because budgeting is something I struggle with. And as I was thinking about it during the day, I realized something important. When you were posting three meals a day, they were mostly homemade and I could copy them – it seemed like you took fewer vacations, ate fewer meals out, etc. Now, a lot of what you post is super fun stuff like parties and concerts and dinners out and beach vacations. I realized that the people I follow on social media (not just you!) tend to post these highlights, and it totally warps how I think about money. Truth is that we have enough (we can afford cars and orthodontics), but we don’t have enough to do what I see on blogs like yours. Somehow, without realizing it, the blog that I used to follow for healthy food inspiration is now affecting how I feel about my finances.
All this to say, that when I saw your paragraph about going back to easy posts about meals, I was happy. I hope you do more of that. It would help me stay engaged with what you do! Thanks for listening!

This all makes perfect sense. (And thanks for saying it so nicely!) The balance between everyday and highlights is something I have struggled with. Sometimes I think if I put up a bowl of oatmeal like I used to it will be the morning boring blog on the internet. I think I have a fear that if I don’t keep up with the SEO heavy, evergreen, brilliantly written creative posts that are all over the internet these days that no one will want to read my blog if I’m writing about a real life meal that is not styled and pretty! And then I remind myself that is why people liked my blog in the first place and tell me they continue to read – because it was relatable and personal. (And let’s be honest, I am not a styled recipe maven.) So thanks for the nudge to head back in a real life direction. I don’t think I have steered toooo far away from my roots, but it’s always good to hear that you guys still appreciate the little daily posts that are simply recapping a little snippet of my life.

The daily posts are always my favorite!!! I love your highlight posts and seeing the fun stuff you do around town, but the “what I did and ate today” are what I hope to see every time I come to KERF!
Tanya says
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I’m sure that it’s hard to figure out how much of which topics to post about and that different people in your audience want different things. For me anyway, the food posts are the most helpful, and if you go toward more of that, I’m here for it, even if it does mean lots of oatmeal.

My son will be out of school this Friday, but then he’s off until Jan.8th. Which is great for us because that’s my work schedule too!
So, still hectic in the mornings but there’s no homework this week and they have special activities everyday, so it’s easier on him. 🙂
I love the simple posts! Here’s my breakfast! They make me feel more connected to you and your blog. Whatever makes you happy and yes sane! Happy holidays!!

Where is Mazen’s shirt from?! I LOVE it!
KathEats says
It’s Mini Boden! Their clothes are not cheap, but Karen and my mom shop the sales. They have the cutest stuff, and it’s all very high quality and well structured!

Thank you so much!

Yes! I love daily life posts!! It’s definitely what drew me to your blog in the beginning!

Although I love absolutely everything my mom makes and bakes, she never quite perfected her French toast recipe. Yours looks yum!
