Literally and hypothetically!
Traveling at 6 in the morning is so much more pleasant in the summer when the sun is up : ) Nevertheless, I slept horribly again last night. Hip/glut cramps from 2:30-3:30, 2 cherries consumed (I’m out of juice) and I finally fell back asleep for my 4:55 wake up call.
Do I look like the most organized traveler I’ve ever been? I feel like it! *Note to self that I don’t think that jacket fits anymore : ) Hard to believe it ever did!
After a quick shower and toothbrush/make-up packing, I was picked up by my chauffer, who had been up for 2 hours training Alex to bake sweets!
He came with a hot piece of buttermilk muffin fresh out of the oven in hand!! I washed it down with a small glass of milk for breakfast #1.
He also showed me how to wrap up my computer cord in a neat way (as I was trying to jam it loosely into my bag…)
I’m using my Jo Totes bag (a 27th birthday gift to myself) on this trip and finding it pretty nice – since it hooks onto my suitcase! I’m so glad this strap finally has a function because I’ve been wishing for years it were a pocket instead.
My first flight was great. I pulled out my traveler’s pack consisting of: sleep mask, blow-up pillow and ear plugs and promptly tried to go to sleep. I didn’t sleep all that well – until I woke up and realized we were about to land! Guess I fell asleep after all : )
Just got to Chicago and swiftly walked to a gate where an 8am Seattle flight was departing hoping for a seat. No luck. So I’m stuck here till 11am.
Decaf Tall iced latte for hydration/protein/calcium:
Breakfast #2 was just consumed – Jam According to Daniel Sweet Cherry plus almond butter on whole wheat Very Berry. Cherries for snack later.
Welcome to my office : ) [Note Matt’s cord folding on the left!]
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I still haven’t picked up my first cherries of the season – but you’ve had me craving them all week!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Hope your travels continue smoothly today! We’ll be flying out of Lynchburg this evening en route to Utah! 🙂
KathEats says
Luckily my lower legs are well taken care of : )
kaila@ healthy helper blog! says
That jam looks so chunky and delicious! Love the whole pieces of fruit in it!
Sana says
I never fold my cords up. They just all tangle up in my backpack, I am not organized at all!
Lace @ Real Food Quest says
I know you have mentioned in previous posts the love of the current HP before…What do you think of it’s travel capabilities? I am due for an upgrade but my current HP is about 800lbs if I were to guess…
KathEats says
Love it!! I do wish it were smaller for travel, but since I use it all the time now, I’m happy with its size. It’s def. lighter and slimmer than my old HP from 2008
Lace @ Real Food Quest says
Thanks for the input! If you had to guess, how much do you think it weighs?
KathEats says
maybe 1-2 lbs? It’s pretty heavy for a bag, which is why I never use it when I’m just out and about with my camera
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
have fun visiting chicago! (even if you are stuck in the airport!) What are you headed out to Seattle for? Did I miss that one?
KathEats says
BlogHer Food!
rosie @ rosalicious says
Ha! My husband is totally anal about our laptop cord too! Have fun in Seattle!
Khushboo says
Can’t say I do it often but I love minimalistic travelling!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Ooh lovely folding! I really like that bag and how it hooks on to the suitcase – so much easier than carrying it on you! I just got new suitcases a couple of months ago before visiting Australia. I’d previously had a hardsided one that that was super durable (it lived through the 5 years of my life in the Middle East and all the summer travel back here to Canada) but a pain to roll around. I now have large and carry-on sized soft-sided cases with the lovely 360 spinner wheels and it is SUCH a nice change! Hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly! 🙂
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Safe travels! …..Sidenote- I had to do a lot of sitting a couple of days ago and it KILLED my legs. I am so used to being busy and active that the sitting made my legs/feet Sooooooo swollen. It hurt! So, make sure to walk and move as much as you can.
KathEats says
I should be walking now. Wish I had someone to watch my bag!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Oof- those 6 am flights are rough, but it is nice to get to your destination earlier in the day (especially when you have a layover). I can never sleep on flights, no matter how hard I try.
YUM to Jam According to Daniel. I made the jar that I bought last fall at the C’ville Farmers market last forever!
KathEats says
You need earplugs!
val/lotsofdishes says
your daily cherries make me seriously regret not buying the few pound box i saw at costco last weekend. i will not make that same mistake twice!!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says

I was about to look them up too!!! Lol!

I am in love with the “Moss” colored version of Kath’s bag…good thing my birthday is coming up 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Glad your travels have gone well so far! I hope the second half is just as smooth. 🙂
Kim says
Oh my gosh! I had NO idea that “not a pocket” on my bag was to connect to my suitcase. It makes SO much sense now. Can’t wait to try it next.
KathEats says
hahahah
jenna k says
i didn’t know how to fold my computer cord like that until i had to send my computer to a friend to take some viruses off. when he gave it back to me, the cord was all neat like that. it was such a “duh” moment. 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
You’re in my city!!! Haha so weird! I’m guessing you’re at O’hare, I think they have an Argo Tea which I love!! Have a safe flight to Seattle!
Grace @ Grace Dishes says
Traveling is definitely in my blood and I have the pre-travel routine down to a science. I love how compact your luggage looks 🙂 Nothing annoys me more than being behind people who TAKE FOREVER to get through security. YES TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES, YES EMPTY YOUR WALLETS (lol)
The pictures look lovely!
KathEats says
Omg…don’t get me started!!!
This morning a FLIGHT ATTENDANT didn’t take off his shoes. They buzzed. The security woman told him he had to take them off. He PROTESTED and asked if he could walk though again. She said no. He took them off. He didn’t buzz. We all watched patiently!
I also saw a woman get all agitated because the security guard wanted to swipe her hands. It’s for our safety!
I do carry a lot of gear (always shoes, jacket, laptop, liquids) but I try to be prepared in advanced and always try to be super cheerful to the security team since I’m sure they get grumbled all all day long for just doing their jobs.
Megan says
Glad to hear you are a seasoned traveler- it makes security easier for everyone. Just an FYI- I’m a Flight attendant and we are allowed to keep our shoes on through security as long as they don’t beep. Some airports scanners are more sensitive than others so things that normally would pass through set them off every once in a while. I’m sure someone who goes through security everyday for work wasn’t just doing that for the fun of it. 🙂
Anyways have a great trip. I love Seattle!
KathEats says
Oh that’s good to know.. The security lady wasn’t very happy when he challenged her though. I imagine going through those all the time gets old though
Kacie says
Flight Attendants are not required to take our shoes off.
Erin says
I try to be pleasant as well. Although I was none too pleased when the security man needed to take the tops off my son’s bottles and acted like I was inconveniencing him because I wanted to know exactly what he was doing, and I wanted to watch. Oh well. 🙂
B @ Crags and Veggies says
AWWW, I think the jacket looks cute! Have fun traveling!
Amanda says
I’ve been drooling over the Jo Totes bag on their site. Do you have any pictures of you wearing it with the longer strap? I don’t think their website has any showing that strap? That would sell it for me, I love being able to wear bags cross body while travelling.
KathEats says
I don’t think I do. I will try to take one this weekend. It CAN go cross body – which is why I like it too!
Amanda says
Thanks Kath! I love that color, too bad they don’t sell it anymore!
Emily B says
You’re wearing it cross body in the first picture in this post!
KathEats says
Oh!! D’oh!!

Hola from the Chicago suburbs, Kath!! Wish you were here for a longer stay – it would be the perfect excuse to play hookie (from teaching, that is) today and stop by to give you a much overdue hug! Safe travels on the rest of your trip, and hope you get some quality zzz’s tonight! 🙂
(Cute tote bag!)

Catalina @ Cake with Love says
Your are so lucky to wake up that early in the morning and have a fresj baked buttermilk muffin!! 🙂 Have a safe flight!
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
That cherry jam looks so good! And the feeling of *just* missing a flight that’s departing or not having an open seat and then hanging out for another couple hours in the airport til your scheduled flight departs…oh yes, I know that feeling. UGh.
Have fun in Chicago!
Kavi @ Lab to Fab! says
You look like a very efficient traveler! Every time I fly I try to emulate George Clooney in “Up In The Air” 🙂
Tracey says
I do that, too! He had it down to a science. 🙂
Jen says
Am I the only one who gets a crazy view on iPhone? The blog header runs down the post and the side tabs are in the center. Just one big crazy colors and mix up!
KathEats says
You need to clear your cache… That fixed it for other people earlier this year
Ashley @ Hudson on the Potomac says
Matt’s buttermilk muffin looks so good! Hope your flight to Seattle is going smoothly!
Diane says
That muffin looks delish. Have a good trip! Do you enjoy public speaking? I’m not a huge fan of it, but have to for work.
KathEats says
No I don’t like it at all!!

My hubs is the go to guy for power cords too. He’s in IT so he’s got zip ties everywhere so things are neat.
Enjoy your travels!
Janet says
Any anxiety about flying at this stage of pregnancy (or this no longer discouraged??)
KathEats says
My doctor said you can until 36 weeks : )
Jeanne says
While most likely things will be perfectly fine, I would be nervous travelling so far from home this late in pregnancy. I work in NICU and we get women who deliver at 27-28 weeks all the time. My hospital is near the beach and we’ve had more than one family here on vacation when mom went into labor.
KathEats says
Luckily i have a friend who gave birth here, so she could point me to the right place in a worst case scenario
emily says
That 1st picture of you is so pretty!!
Erin Motz says
I love flying and airports and layover coffees 🙂 enjoy! Hoping you get another good nap in for the second leg of the trip! 🙂
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
How convenient that Matt was up and ready with a breakfast ‘treat’ for you! One less thing to think about when getting ready for a trip. That cherry jam looks amazing…like preserves. Happy travelling…looking forward to learning all about BlogHer Food!
carol says
That was so thoughtful of your husband. What a nice couple. Safe travels.
Charlotte says
I love that jacket! And, I don’t think it looks too small! But, if you ever want to hand it off to someone I’ll take it 😉
Hope you have a great trip to Seattle. Looking forward to hearing about it, because I am moving there in the fall!
KathEats says
Well hopefully it will fit again in a few months time!
Emily @Emily's Olives says
Have fun in Seattle! That buttermilk muffin looks the best! I am drooling right now!

Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy says
yum! that jam looks delicious! and those cherries look delicious!! yum yum yum! thanks for sharing!
Julia H. @ Going Gulia says
Is that Jotote’s bag a purse or a camera bag? I am seriously digging that fact that it can stay on a suitcase handle like that…I bet my mom would like that, too!
KathEats says
It’s a camera bag, but I don’t see why you couldn’t use it as a purse too
Julia H. @ Going Gulia says
Very true! Thanks 🙂
Matt says
Haha, better keep that cord organized!
Vegan tickles says
I’m not judging you, but decaf coffee isn’t truly caffeine free. I don’t understand why pregnant women think its ok to drink it. Caffeine=stimulating drug. Just being concerned.
KathEats says
A modest amount caffeine during pregnancy has not been ruled harmful…
JessicaE says
My midwife and doctor both said a cup of coffee a day is absolutely fine. 150-200 mg has been deemed safe.
Michael Tavallaei says
the belly is showing!
Christine says
Love the Jo Tote bag! Love, love, love it! Do you think I could use it as a laptop? I noticed on their website the bags are for cameras. I want one but don’t have a camera to justify the purchase but I do have a laptop! Thanks!
KathEats says
I carried mine in it. You do have to remove all the pockets – or do them in semi-circles in the corners (which is what I did) so it can’t really be camera + laptop but it can be either or
Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See says
Okay super silly question: Is Matt the same as Kanz? Haha sorry, I know that’s totally random. 🙂
KathEats says
Yup!
