So I don’t want to get “all yoga on you” because that gets on my nerves, and I sincerely apologize in advance for all the cliche talk! But I do want to respond to those of you who have asked me how I got into yoga in the comments and by email. You might recall that I’ve tried it on and off for years (I went through a DVD phase in college) but have never really enjoyed it. It was always a chore, and being very inflexible, I wasn’t good at it.
So this time around, I decided to use the “just do 20 minutes” approach with audio yoga in my living room. No class to attend, no mat, no obligations, no schedule, no challenge. I didn’t want to bore myself with long, slow sessions that I wasn’t mentally ready for. I just said I’d do 20 minutes of stretching in the AM on the days when I didn’t have to get to the gym early. Anyone has 20 minutes. (Start with 5 if that’s all you have!) I started with Gentle Hatha I = 100% stretch and relaxation. I didn’t want any lunges, warriors, strength. Just stretching. I studied the PDF pose guides beforehand so I was familiar with the poses, which made them easier.
After about a month of doing 20 minute sessions about 4 days a week (most of the beginner + advanced beginner 20 minute ones), I got better at the stretching poses and noticed an improvement in my flexibility. Then I started to literally crave something a little more focused on strength – lunges and warriors – gasp! I was inspired when I started to see my muscles respond (a huge surprise!). Then I started to crave something with more of a flow. Then longer sessions. As I’ve said before: motivation follows results. Not the other way around.
[Cliche talk]
I also think that the past two months have changed my view of my body. I really do enjoy feeling my muscles work with such focus, and it has made me appreciate my body so much more. It’s made me want to focus more on strength training for the sake of strength and less because “I should do it twice a week to maintain muscle mass.”
- I love that I have tons of variety in classes to choose from as opposed to just a couple DVDs.
- I love that I do it after rolling out of bed in my pajama pants.
- I love lighting candles.
- I love having no distractions of other people.
- I love how un-corny the YogaDownload instructors are and their choice of background music.
- And I’m glad I listened to my cravings and let it all ……for lack of a better phrase….flow naturally.
[/Cliche talk]
So my advice to anyone who hates yoga would be to just start slow and with the minimum time you can devote without dreading it. If you hate it, try another version. If you still hate it, cut back to just 5 minutes! But once you start going through the motions, you’ll probably crave more. And maybe you’ll get hooked. I think this probably applies to lots of different exercises – running, weight lifting, etc.
Today’s big surprise? YogaDownload.com has noticed my frequent visits and blog raves about their audio yoga and is giving all KERF readers 50% off all downloads for the month of February! The magic coupon code to enter at checkout: KathEats.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeetttt!! So this morning I downloaded a handful of 45 minute classes. I did Power Vinyasa Flow #2 for Intermediates for 45 minutes. It was hard but exactly what I’ve been looking for these past few weeks. My arms definitely felt the burn and while there were one too many chair poses, I’ll forgive them 🙂
OK, enough yoga talk! Back to the focus of KERF: Oatmeal!
I considered an alternative breakfast, but I really wanted a steaming bowl of something warm.
This mix:
- 1/3 cup oats, 1%milk, water, pinch salt, 1/2 medium banana
- 1 dried fig, 1 dried apricot, 1 tbsp ea. of craisins and raisins
- ~1/2 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end. (I actually kept the heat on and it overcooked so that it kind of melted into a very liquidy soup, which thickened again when it slightly cooled. I thought I’d ruined it at first, but it ended up really good!)
- ~2 tbsp almonds, walnuts + peanuts
- 3 M&Ms from trail mix
- Coconut
- Coconut butter
- Naturally Nutty Cinnamon PB, scattered
Butterscotch Toffee, pressed
Boy was this good today!
I’ve got a ton of school work that I have been neglecting. I’m just not in the swing of things yet! I have 2 exams next week and while I woke up to 16* this morning, it’s supposed to be 65* on Sunday so I want to enjoy the weekend!!!
Lara says
Thanks for sharing your “yoga story,” Kath! I’m just getting into it too, but I have never tried the yoga downloads before. Maybe I will now that there is a special KathEats promotion! Thanks!

Awesome Kath!!! Woo hoo for the discount, I am so going to try now as I have been wanting to for quite some time! Thanks 🙂
Oatmeal looks divine per usual!

Thanks for the coupon code! I tried one of their free downloads about a month ago after reading about them on your blog, and I just downloaded another one last night. Now I think I’ll pick up some of other ones 🙂
Ashley says
Ooo how awesome of Yoga Download to offer 50% off to your readers! I’ve downloaded one 45 minute session but now I’m going to download more.

Oats look great, but I honestly didn’t pay much attention to them as I am SO EXCITED about 50% off at YogaDownload.com. How generous of them. Thanks so much Kath!
haya (living and learning) says
sweet!!! thanks. i’ve been waiting patiently for a yogadownload sale.
you know i felt EXACTLY the same way about yoga as you did. too slow. too boring. made me feel bad about my lack of balance/flexibility in classes with other people. i have always hated it until i gave the gentle hatha yoga download a try a few weeks ago after you had a positive experience. it was so wonderful and soothing, and the stretch felt great because i’m not good about stretching before/after my cardio workouts. big surprise, i’m now wanting to do it a few times a week and have even moved up to some of the more difficult classes involving warriors and lunges etc. the lunar flow class has even solved my not sleeping well at night problems! i heart yoga. thanks for that.
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
YAY for yoga coupons!!! Do they have any video downloads or are they all audio? I guess i’ll just have to check it out…
Meg says
You have me craving oats and yoga!

when you downloaded the free 20 minute ones, did you still have to enter credit card information? I tried to do it a few weeks ago but I think I was doing something wrong and gave up. I’d love to try to get into yoga more, so I’d appreciate any help! Are there any other places to get free downloads? Someone mentioned an iTunes podcast i think?
Kath says
Kari ,
I like Jackie and Dawnelle a lot. I haven’t done too many of the others.
megan ,
You do have to go through a checkout process, but you don’t have to enter in credit card info for the free downloads. Just leave that blank. Then you go to the links and save to your computer where you’ll have the mp3 forever.

Great call!
I’ll let you know how it goes in a couple of months!

now if you couuld only combine some yoga and studying you’d be set
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Exciting for the 1/2 off! I am glad you are liking it. Yoga can really be so much more than a physical exercise if you let it! Sometimes it is hard to surrender to the other aspects of yoga since it is such a taboo thing..but if it makes you feel good, that’s all that matters!
Laine says
Kath, start blogging about all the cute clothes at lululemon and see if you can get us discounts! Just kidding, but one of the things I love about my yoga practice (yes, I call it my yoga practice because that is what it is) is all the cute clothes!

Sarah says
Glad you have started to like the yoga. I was not surprised when you said you get annoyed when people get “all yoga on you’.
A lot of people who are very focused on doing all the right things when it comes to fitness, tend to have the attitude that you do X hours or cardio a week, combined with X number of upper and lower body workouts and you burn X number of calories, etc and then it’s all good. Yoga is so not about a formula or about people telling you what you should do. It has a lot more to do with how you feel and how your mind and body are engaging. You really have to have an open mind and not just think about it as one more bit of exercise that you are building into your routine.
Anyways, I am no expert. Polly or Jenna can probably add some more meaningful insight to the benefits of yoga. Sometimes when people get all yoga, it totally makes sense. You may end up loving it more and more.
Ashley says
thanks kath! im excited to download some more:)
zestycook says
Loving the Oatmeal…. I still want a bowl!
Maggi says
Oh WOW! I just grabbed the Gentle Hatha and did it in my office. I’ve been a so-so yoga enthusiast. My flexibility stinks, and I’m *ahem* carrying a few extra pounds so classes always intimidate me. But I LOVE how the soothing music is incorporated and the download poses are available before you even start. What a great find! Thanks Kath!!
Moran says
That’s a great Yoga post! And thank you, Kath! That’s awesome that YogaDownloads are giving a discount to your readers!

I love that this post got “all yoga on ya.” 😉
Kath, I started small with yoga too. I actually hated it. I tell ya, my attitude was “I could be running right now” and well, that sorta changed. 😉 Yoga is about loving your body enough to really feel good. Period. You want to feel good, have fun, learn more about your body and what creates the most healthy, happy you. For some it’s lots of yoga, for some it’s a teeny bit. How is that for getting “all yoga on ya” 🙂
I do think many will surprised how much they will love it and might even do it more or even… try a few days of ONLY yoga… 😉 Ya never know what can happen…
Yummy eats as always, Kath!! Massive hugs!!!
Alison says
Yay!!! I am just starting to get really into yoga too, and this is great motivation – especially since it is so cold in Boston I am having a hard time finding motivation to do anything else! Thanks so much Kath (and yogadownloads)!!

Thanks for scoring us all a discount on the yoga!

Kath,
Thanks so much for sharing your yoga story. I felt a lot like you until last year, when I finally took the responsibility to overcome my eating issues and just SLOW DOWN a little. Being kindof a cardio freak before, I was so concerned with burning calories, that yoga seemed like a “waste”. It has honestly done wonders for my appreciation for my body, my ability to slow down my mind and just breathe, AND my strength and flexibility!!
For anyone who is doubting, please see yoga as some much deserved “personal time” and take the time to give back to yourself!!
Bec says

Thanks for the head’s up on the 1/2 off deal!! I have just started doing the Sunrise/Sunset dvd and love it– I’ve been wanting to download some free sessions from yogadownloads- but just have not had time. Now I have an excuse to download free ones and get 1/2 off the longer ones 🙂
Bee says
Love yoga downloads. As i work full time and also am a full time grad student it is hard to work in yoga so the 20 min. sessions are great! Love your oatmeal kick too…it is cool to see people so passionate about eating healthy. You should check out eat, live, run too if you are really into yoga. I follow her blog from time to time and she has the most amazing yoga body and strength.
Lauren says
Kath, I LOVE your yoga post! Kudos to you for taking a moment to express to us what the practice really means for you. I have a very similar relationship to yoga. I never really ‘got’ it for the longest time–I always (erroneously) assumed that yoga was purely meditative. However, I have practiced Pilates religiously for 10 years; I truly enjoy it, and consider it a great complement to running. About a year and a half ago, I dediced to give yoga an honest try–and found myself *completely* hooked on power yoga, vinyasa, and bikram. I find that yoga has made me appreciate my body in a way I never have before. As a recovered anorexic, I nowadays gravitate toward any form of exercise that celebrates the body’s strength and agility. Yoga empowers me to love and respect my body–I can never, ever imagine wanting to deny it now.
Thanks again for your post–a very inspiring read.

i started out with the yogadowmload gentle hatha 1 as well, and i still love doing that one! thanks for the heads up on the discount, i’ll definitely be making good use of that 🙂

Yogadownload.com sure has taken off! I discovered it almost two years ago in podcast form on iTunes. There was one perfect 20 minute flow session that I absolutely loved. Sometime recently it got wiped from my iPod and I haven’t been able to figure out which one it was….but thanks to bloggers everywhere I realized that I could go to their site and try a bunch of others for free and I’m a happy camper. This KERF deal has fantastic timing!!

I like the yoga downloads as well, but I can’t do it too often. It’s hardly gentle on your wrists and downward dogs are a pain when you have carpal tunnel =(.

Hi Kath! Great post, I love your yoga story. I have been doing yogadownloads on and off for a while and love the way they make me feel. I’m slowly adding more and more into my routine and find it’s a great balance for my more intense activities like running and spinning. Thanks for the coupon code, I’ll definitely be using it!

I tried the yogadownload.com site on a whim after seeing it on your blog and I love it! I have had the same experience with starting out slowly and craving more – and I love the non-cheesiness of the instructors and the music. What a great bonus to get the discount coupon. Love your site!

Thanks so much for turning me on to the yogadownload site! I recently moved and haven’t found a gym/yoga studio that I feel like shelling out the big bucks for yet. The yoga downloads hit the spot without the expense of the yoga studio! Plus, you are right that the convenience of rolling out of bed and doing yoga can’t be beat!
Sally says
Hi Kath,
I’ve just bought my 2nd yoga class from the yogadownload.com using your discount code! (I have pretty much all the free ones) I’ve done yoga on and off for years too and recently had fallen out of love with it but doing these shorter classes has definitely made me fall back in love with it again.
Thank you for introducing this into my life! 🙂
Shelby says
Yoga and Oatmeal…Ahh.
Sally says
I am so excited to use this code! My husband and I started doing some basic yoga at home and we are both really enjoying it. Like you, we started with some videos that focused more on stretching and relaxing and less on strength, but now we do a strength video or podcast a few times per week. Both have us are already seeing improvements in our flexibility and crave yoga when we are feeling stressed. We’re starting to get a little bit bored with our current repertoire of netflix-on-demand videos and 20 minute podcasts, so thank you so much for providing a discount on the longer sessions!
K says
Love yoga! That bowl is very cute and I’m kind of jealous about your butterscotch coffee!

Is there a site or any resources where an instructor conducts a class WITHOUT background music? I think one of my issues is I prefer my own music- not new-age chants or elevator music- to do yoga to… like Shakira’s “Fijacion Oral.”

Kath, I applaud you for being able to live in 16 degree weather! Insanely cold! Yikes. Its in the 50’s in Cali and I think THIS is cold.
Sheila says
Okay, this just hit me today. Your oatmeal posts are getting a little boring. Yes, only just now. Don’t get me wrong, I love your site, that’s for sure. And I eat the same thing for breakfast every day of my life, also. Non-fat Nancy’s yougurt with raspberries and original All-Bran. Yes, I can change it up in a minamal way, banana half instead of raspberries, or, wow, strawberries when they are really good. Or once in a great while, dry oatmeal instead of the All-Bran. Whoopeee! But jeez, the oatmeal thing and the many additives have now been recycled so many times already. I understand. YOU LOVE IT. Hasn’t Quaker oais given you a deal yet? How about a nice egg white omelet? Put in a few drops of yolk for color and flavor. How about anything different?
Alison says
I signed up with YogaDownload earlier this week after everything you’ve been saying about the site. I downloaded a couple of freebies when I signed up but hadn’t done any until today. (Like you I have always done yoga on and off, and I always wanted to like it but couldn’t exactly get to that point.) After reading your morning post I realized now was The Time. I just finished Gentle Hatha Yoga I and it was great, I’ve done enough yoga that I was able to follow along and do all the poses, thanks for being the motivation to get me to give it another try. 🙂 I’m aiming to be in the same place soon that you’re in now. Looking forward to taking it slow and just doing as much as I have time for each day until I crave it! 😀 Thanks again Kath, look at all the people you inspire and motivate each and every day!
Kath says
Such wonderful comments today! Thanks for sharing your stories 😀
Laine ,
My workout clothes are pretty bad. I don’t go shopping often and when I do I feel like I should get more practical clothes. But I suppose since I workout daily that workout clothes are pretty practical 🙂
polly ,
You are such a yogi!
Emily ,
Ah, yes, that would be a good resource. But it would take me forever, and my thoughts on each session change as I go. Did you know each session has a review section on it? Also, if you search for “Yogadownload” on KERF you’ll probably come up with each time I’ve done one, and I usually include a few thoughts.
Jennifer ,
Yogadownload has a “no music” section.
Leah ,
No, probably not. Just like all things in life, I think the key is balance and variety. I wouldn’t want to just do any one exercise solely forever – running, weight lifting or yoga. I like them all too much!
Kath
frequent reader rare commentor says
I agree w/ Sheila; oatmeal every day with the repeating variations just shows a rigid behavior. I know Kath eats cereal and milk one morning per week, and maybe she doesn’t eat eggs, but an occasional yogurt and toast breakfast or waffles with peanut butter, or anything else would be a nice change and help break her cycle up a bit. What happened to her cottage cheese/ protein pancakes she used to make??
Jennifer says
Thanks Kath for the suggestion.

Kath, You have totally got me hooked on oats and your blog! Being that I used to think I hated oats, I am just now learning to cook them. Can you tell me…how much liquid do you use when you use 1/3 c. oats? I still feel like it is hit and miss for me unless I make a larger portion.
Kath says
Michelle,
I tell you in each recipe: 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup milk, 1/3 cup water. If I use dried fruit, I add about 2 tbsp more water because it tends to absorb it. Glad you’re liking the oats 😉

YAY for yoga! It is amazing how it can totally change your perspective. I was skeptical of it at first, but I swear it is addicting. Maybe I will try those audio ones now 😉

Glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the yoga! I used to do it yoga every night before bed, then got out of the habit. Then I started doing it after each of my runs and then that faded away because of time constraints. I’ve realized though that my running sort of suffers when I quit the yoga. It’s only been a month since I quit doing yoga after my runs and now one of my shins is bothering me again. I’ve decided that I NEED to do yoga in the evenings because I really do think it balances out the more vigorous workouts that I do. I started up again last night and already my shin’s feeling a little better…it’s just my tight muscles I guess! Thanks for sharing your yoga story 🙂
Jess says
I don’t usually comment but I’m definitely a reader and I wanted to thank you for your yoga talk as of late. It’s something I’ve always wanted to get into as well but have had a hard time with because I’m frankly a klutz.
But just last night at work (I work nights) I decided to download a couple of the free classes to try out and was already considering buying a couple of the cheaper ones. And now today you post the coupon code! I just thought it was a nice coincidence and I’m hoping I’ll learn to love yoga just like I have running already this year. So, yeah, thanks.
Tara says
great post! and yay for discounts!
question for kath (and others): in the morning flow download from yogadownloads.com, is anyone else able to get up into the wheel pose all the way? because i feel like my arms just aren’t strong enough to push my head off of the ground. maybe i’m doing something wrong? it could be my lack of flexibility, but it really just feels like i’m not strong enough to push/lift all the way up into the pose. thoughts?
Carly says
Hey Kath.
I’ve been reading (and lurking) for a while, but I wanted to thank you for all the effort you put into this blog, it’s a joy to read, and your eats always look amazing. I started downloading the free yoga classes at your recommendation, and am definitely going to take this opportunity to buy some of the longer ones. I’ve been practicing yoga for a while, but have a hard time motivating myself to do it on my own, so this is a great solution. Thanks a lot!
Meaghen says
This is so great Kath. Thanks so much! I jus downloaded my first yoga class and can’t wait to try it! I love yoga, but haven’t done it in awhile. You’ve inspired me to get back into it! Thanks again!

Tara ,
I took dance and gymnastics when I was young, and wheel is just like a back bend. I’m of course not as flexible, but I can still do one. Have you done one before? Perhaps if you try getting into it like a child would you can train your muscles to recognize the pose and then get into it the way they do with the push up.
