Remember this smoothie made from cooked oatmeal?
And this SIAB heavy on the raw oats?
Both were incredibly DOUGHY and I haven’t stopped thinking about them!
Last night I had the idea to combine the doughiness of overnight oats with a smoothie – to create a doughy smoothie!
I made it right in my Vita-mix and then put the whole thing in the fridge to soak. Then this morning, I blended up the overnight oats…
And voilà! A dough smoothie!
Dough Boy Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw rolled oats
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 banana
- Sprinkle cinnamon
- Splash vanilla
- Pinch kosher salt
Instructions
- Combine all into a blender, stir and put in fridge overnight. In the morning, add about 1/4 cup more milk (just to loosen things up) and whirl away. Top with favorites!
I added Hail Merry Orange Cinnamon Grawnola – which was AMAZING combined with the slight cinnamony smoothie. Plus a to-go packet of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter, which drizzled on very nicely, and coconut.
I’m gradually cutting back on coffee in anticipation for the warm spring day when I say “Enough!” It always happens!
Busy day ahead. Tomorrow we are leaving on our FINAL Great Harvest training trip – this one to the Columbia, MD bakery to learn + observe with the awesome sister pair of owners! The week ends with a visit to my grandmother in Towson, along with mom, sister and Matt! After this trip we have no plans of traveling until the cows come home!
Camille says
That sounds amazing right now! I could use some dough in my life 🙂
Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) says
That looks delicious!
Oddly enough, I quit coffee in the middle of winter. Now I’m waiting for the day when I get tired of green tea, haha 🙂
Have a fun day!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
I’m the opposite of you — it is in the Spring/Summer when I start drinking more coffee. I’m not sure why?
I love the idea of a dough-y smoothie!
Heather says
What a delicious looking breakfast – and I love that there isn’t much cleanup!
I don’t drink coffee but haven’t had a cup of tea since Saturday – kicking the caffeine habit is not easy.
Sounds like you have a great trip coming up – it is so nice to be able to spend time with family.
Megan @ Loving the little things says
DUDE, that’s a brillant idea!! I’ve been eating overnight oats every single day for about a month now…I’m just so infatuated at the moment. But blending them up sounds like a fun change….if only I had a vitamixer.
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
That’s such a cool idea for something different for breakfast.
And as for coffee – I tried to give it up but I’m just so much more pleasant to be around with coffee. 🙂
Elizabeth@The Sweet Life says
How creative–love the name!

Christie {Nourishing Eats} says
For some reason, I have been thinking of having a smoothie all day today. My friend was telling me she likes avocado in her smoothies and it has been on my mind ever since.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
I never got into coffee, thank goodness, but I just gave up diet soda and the cravings are still coming! oh well, hopefully they stop soon 🙂

Safe travels!!
Chelsea says
Do you ever consider switching to iced coffee in the warmer months?
KathEats says
Yeah, I used to drink “cool coffee” which was just hot poured over ice so it melted and wasn’t too cold. But coffee is so expensive I’m thinking of just switching to tea for the summer@
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
What an awesome idea Kath! That almond butter swirl looks so good on top. I think anything smothie-like is definitely a sign that spring is ahead! 🙂 I’m the same way with coffee – I love the warmth in the winter, but in the summer it’s just not my thing!
Toni says
I love coffee all the time. Summer or winter doesn’t matter to me!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says

So I had no idea that Columbia MD had a great harvest so thanks for the heads up!
Also, I know you aren’t going to be in the area for long, but on one of your trips to the Baltimore area you need to check out Woodberry Kitchen….I think you’d love it.
Happy travels!

Thanks for the rec!

This looks delish! I’ll have to make this sometime soon. As for the coffee, I usually make the switch from hot to iced. I’m not a big coffee drinker anyhow but I cannot drink hot beverages in the summer.

Good idea! I had some overnight oats this morning. They would have been awesome all blended up!
Johanna B says
I finally took the plunge and bought some gluten-free oatmeal this weekend. Can’t wait to try out some of your combinations. I also bought millet and made a strawberry-vanilla poridge yesterday. It was good – VERY satisfying. I didn’t get hungry for a long time.
Kristen, Sweetly says
Oh, that looks wonderful! I have a confession, though. I was waiting and waiting to find out why your smoothie got messed up. It took me until the very end to realize what d’oh you were talking about. Hahaha.

I actually live in Columbia but have never been to GH b/c they don’t sell anything GF (I called at one point after becoming inspiried by all your beautiful bread), and I can’t eatgluten. Is it to stalker-esk to say that I’d so maybe come this week to buy a gift for my coworkers just so I can meet you? I hope you guys have a great time!!

Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Mmmm, doughy shakes are the best!!
bitt says
Do you worry about the blades of the blender when you keep it like that? I am paranoid even to let my soak for too long. Maybe I worry unnecessarily though.
KathEats says
I couldn’t think of any reason it would be harmed..
Tiff says
I’ve never been to the one in Columbia, but love the one in Annapolis. They had the best St. Patty’s Day sugar cookies. Maybe I will have to venture to the Columbia one to try to get a Kath & Matt spotting. Have a fun trip – the weather looks good for this week!
Cindy says
Enjoy your travels!
Baking 'n' Books says
Do they accomodate your traveling expenses?
Do you ever wake up and not want what you decided the night before? Or do you just eat it anyways?!

Emily says
I appreciate the invite but unfortunately I’m unavailable. Enjoy your time in Columbia 🙂
Chase says
Aww I’m from Towson! Such a great place to grow up.
Hannah says
I can’t help giggling because there’s no way my Vita-Mix container would fit in my half of the fridge (cause my fridge is full of chocolate… I wish I were joking, but I’m not), but I could always soak in a bowl and then transfer 🙂
Alaina says
I can’t wait for the iced coffees in the spring and summer time!
Cara Craves... says
The two best things combined together!
I love it!
Christin@purplebirdblog says
The one time I blended oats into a smoothie I thought the texture was kind of off, but I think this is something I’d enjoy!
Katie (Sweet Tater) says
made this with frozen spinach added. love it!
Lauren says
Hi! Do you think this or the SIAB would work with steel-cut oats instead of rolled oats?
Thanks!
-Lauren
KathEats says
I think they might be too hard..
Emma says
Yumm those look amazing. Do you put a frozen or fresh banana in the mix the night before?
KathEats says
I put fresh but frozen would work
brianna says

I just tried this for the first time this morning! So yummy! I halved the recipe, but still used a whole banana, and it was great! I topped it with walnuts, coconut, and fresh cherries… yummm.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
So I tried to make this smoothie this morning (prepared it last night) and it came out really soupy! I’m not sure what I did wrong! Maybe it’s because I didn’t add Chia Seeds?
Aly says
Just had this and it was great! Added one handful of spinach and it was nummy 🙂 Just a tip: if using a frozen banana add it to the blender in the morning. I didn’t do this today and I think it will create a nice cool morning treat + more thickness as well 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!
ellf says
Is it okay I blended before I put in fridge? Didnt read the part that I had to wait…
KathEats says
I think that should be totally fine. Just stir and/or blend again in the morning to fluff it up
Katy says
Once you’ve made them how long would they keep in the fridge for? Is it possible to make a few days worth at a time? Thanks 🙂
KathEats says
Yes I think so
Maritza says
