The latest item to hit the shelves of Great Harvest Cville!?
Dog treats!
Healthy for dogs.
Delicious enough for humans!
They taste like a cracker minus the salt. Ingredients: 100% whole wheat flour, water, butter, eggs, milk. [Real food, dog safe.]
Just took my lunch break after bagging tons of bread.
I had garden lettuce with olive oil and vinegar and honey peanuts (FYI, honey does not wilt lettuce, but vinegar does!)
And a cup of yogurt with flax and strawbs!
The placemat is a vintage calorie chart my grandmother found for me when I went back to school to become an RD!
Mid-morning snack and dessert – Savannah bar edges!
You can guess who played a role in securing these for me!
Back to the grind [our whole wheat flour!]
Cait's Plate says
Haha – gotta love that Allie 😉
Also I ADORE that placemat – what a perfect idea for a gift. Your grandmother rocks.
I had strawberries this morning and seriously debated having them plopped in a big bowl of yogurt. I put them over waffles instead with a yogurt topping – but seeing your bowl there confirms that my first thought would’ve been a good idea 🙂
HAPPY HUMP DAY!
Monika @ Powered by paprika says
love that vintage calorie chart, but as a RD- are they all correct?! 🙂
Elizabeth says
Another RD here and I have that handkerchief framed in my office! I do think the calories are accurate, although portions were much smaller back then!
KathEats says
Haha- I didn’t even think to check!! I’m sure the ballpark is correct 🙂
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
My sister made homemade dog treats for her puppy and I thought that was adorable!
Gram says
Smotey thrilled you are making dog treats.
…and we bet Ally made you eat the Savanah.
Gram says
Ooops, sorry Allie (sp!)
Glad you found a use for the placemat.
KathEats says
Hi Gram!!! I will send some up to Smotey sometime soon!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Even Gram knows I’m the mouse/sweets fairy of the bakery! 🙂
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I love that placemat! So cute. I have definitely tried dog food before (so gross) but I would definitely try those biscuits!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Now you just need to get a dog to help you eat the treats Kath!
Kayla says
We got my dog some treats at the GH in Des Moines and he loved them. I don’t think our local GH has them, sad. I kept meaning to ask you if you guys did those.
That mat is too cute.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Cute 🙂 I like the great harvest top too btw!
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
haha I’m am loving the dog biscuit tasting! 🙂 My little Mosely would love those! 🙂
Those edge snacks are such a great idea, just a little taste 🙂
val @ lots of dishes says
i love the dog treats!! is it possible to make tiny ones too? every time i buy fresh dog treats they are so big!
KathEats says
Yeah, we could probably make them smaller in the future
Kelly says
It’s funny; I noticed the size as well. I guess because my dog is under 20 lbs. Not sure if GH controls the flavors, but if not, you should try peanut butter & cheese varities. I make those at home and my dog loves them.
val @ lots of dishes says
I think two sizes would be awesome, big ones for the 20+ and little ones for the tiny guys. My dog is 10 pounds and I have a hard time finding bakery treats for her. (spoiled much?:)
Catherine@happinessafterheartache says
My dogs love homemade dog treats. Especially ones that look like people-cookies. Too bad we don’t have a GH near us. Although I do have a recipe to make my own. But I don’t even cook for myself let alone my dogs. Oh well, your dog treats look yummy!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
I love that you’re selling GH dog treats – so fun!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
I’ll always have your back! No crumbs go to waste!
PS those expired yogurts are stilllll good. I wonder if Mr. Health Inspector saw that. He’ll have to fight me on those.
KathEats says
Hahaha. Awesome!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
How awesome that you are serving dog treats!!!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
You eating the dog treats reminds me of when my brother dared me to eat dog food when we were younger. I did but I can ASSURE you it was NOT real food. I still can’t believe I did that.
Andrea @ Onion in My Hair says
My best friend and I ate dog “ice cream” when we were younger. We were clueless. 🙂
Sahira says
LOVE the placemat!
Andrea @ Onion in My Hair says
Kath – Quick question.
Can we buy products from YOUR store online?
Are you thinking about adding that capability in the future?
Thanks!
KathEats says
Not yet. We’re just not ready to buy hundreds of boxes and go to the post office everyday 🙁 (Wishful thinking, but I’m sure it would be a lot). I think we can work it out with the post office guy who has introduced himself though.
Baking 'n' Books says
Does GH offer an online store somewhere?
Allie is smart – keep her around if she saves you bars!
Andrea @ Onion in My Hair says
I hear ya.
Baby steps! Congrats on all the success!
Next stop – reality show? 😉
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yeah, in our office we have pickups and deliveries – USPS, FedEx and UPS. With business accounts you wouldn’t need to physically go to the post office. =)
Allie says
And then you spit the dog biscuit out! Haha your face looks like you loved it.
KathEats says
No it was good!!
Angie says
I actually laughed out loud at this at my desk! I used to eat the extra dog bones with soup when I worked at GH! 🙂 They are kinda tasty…
Meg says
Confession: I used to sneak Snausages and Beggin Strips as a child. I know, I was a strange kid.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Love that the dog treats are human safe! I think that’s so important. Lunch looks perfect. Have a great afternoon Kath!
Katherine says
I wish I could get a hold of some of those dog treats.
O, and you are gorgeous as always!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I love the vintage calorie chart. Aren’t berries amazing… just can’t get enough this time of year.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Haha…my dogs’ treats always look good enough to eat, but I’ve never been brave enough to do it!
Erica says
aw! I so wish our GH carried doggie cookies! I’ve made them once for Frank and he LOVED them. Great lunch. Everything looks so fresh. And the edges are totally the best part!
Ann @ Day by Day says
I adore the placemat!! Definitely a great vintage gift. Gifts from grandmothers are always special no matter what they are!
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says
Love that placemat. So cute. And those strawberries are making me hungry. I love strawberry season!
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
I love that you’re making dog treats too! I’m sure all of the Cville doggies will love you 🙂
And thanks for the tip on honey. I always thought that any liquid would wilt lettuce!
Rebecca @ How the Cookies Crumble says
Such a cute placemat! Although I don’t think they included portion control – spaghetti is only 100 calories?? and soda is 50? But I think they overestimated the calories in my dry martini. 😉
Cait @ UrbanFencepost says
Aww, wish there was a Great Harvest in downtown Chicago – I would buy those for my puppy!
Abby says
That placemat is so neat! 🙂 I love it!
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
I love the placemat!! And that you’re offering dog treats… there’s a brewery in Montana that does that as well – http://www.bozo.coop/news/2010/11/brewies-local-dog-treats – made with real malted beer barley! My pups love it, and I love it because the brewery was so resourceful, glad y’all are doing the same!!
Hope says
That’s great that you are offering dog treats! I like that they only contain natural ingredients. 🙂 That savannah bar looks so good! Love the placemat!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
That’s cool that you guys are selling dog treats!! Did you make them right on location?
KathEats says
of course!
Jenn says
Ohh, I wish we had a GH in Pittsburgh! I would love all the bread, sweets and the doggy cookies!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Oh that placement is awesome!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
What lucky doggies that get to eat those treats!
And Savannah bar edges…oh those look almost as good as the middles. Allie is such a good thinker to save them 🙂
Ashley says
The dog treats are a great idea!! Your lettuce looks so fluffy + fresh…mmm
Hannah @theflexitarianeater says
those dog treats are too cute!
and those strawberries…wow do they look delicious.
also loving that placemat 🙂
Sonia (the Mexigarian) says
Yeah, that placemat rocks. I’m glad to know the dog treats are good for humans as well. When I was a kid, I would use to eat a little of dog food. Dried kibble, never wet. Lol. Sounds horrible, but i was such a strange kid.
jo says
Very fun idea! Hope they go over well with the doggies! I’m super surprised your recipe doesn’t contain peanut butter! Just because it’s you and all 😉
kris (everyday oats) says
That calorie placemat is beyond cute!
charyll ruggeroli says
Kath, You got me hooked on oatmeal! Thanks.
Yesterday I tried something and thought of you.
To leftover cold Coach’s Oats Cracked n’ Toasted Oats, which I get at Costco,
I added fresh strawberries, plain low-fat yogurt, chia seeds, which I got from your Sky, and
a drizzle of blue agave.
The oatmeal had hardened to a tofu texture.
I found that even cold oatmeal is really good. 🙂
KathEats says
Sounds great!
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I would put a bottle of evoo and vinegar right in the office! 🙂
Kate @ NaturaStride says
NICE! My dog (Manny) would love these, I’m sire. Although he loves to eat everything.
Christine (The Raw Project) says
Haha, love the dog treats – awesome idea!
Love the old calorie chart, how fun.
beth grossman says
I kept trying to figure out what state cville is in but i just did, VA!
you should make that more clear in your home page!
Us northerners are dumb
bought some apple pie bread at a GH booth at local farmers market in MA; delish
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
whoa that’s trippy! seriously, before coming into the blogworld, I had nooo idea that dogs were allowed or capable of eating such ingredients! Minus the milk, but I didn’t know the others were okay. Interesting stuff 🙂
Kim says
I’m sure Matt brews all-grain, but I’m not sure what the rules regarding ingredient sourcing for the bakery are, but spent grain, peanut butter, egg, and flour make amazing dog treats and uses up the spent grain!
Ana says
As a nutritionist to be I have to say that I LOVE your placemat!!!
Ana
Meg says
Looks like we need a new blog – DERF! Dogs eat real food 😉
Oh and YOU need a dog! 🙂 I’m partial to daschunds…but they are really the best dogs ever.
Enjoy your day, kath!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
That is so cute! I LOVE the placemat.
lynn @ the actor's diet says
now my jack russell julius has to come w me to visit you!
Jennifer says
I love that vintage calorie chart! Thanks for the tip about the honey and vinegar. 🙂
Hilary says
Mmmm….fresh seasonal berries ROCK!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I am not ashamed to admit I have eaten dog treats before. Once when I was younger, I wanted to know what a Milkbone tasted like. Pretty bland. And then when I was at a veggie festival, someone was selling homemade natural dog treats. They were delicious.
Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
Hmm I’ve never thought to put honey peanuts in a salad! I do like salad with greens, mini tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, steak, goat cheese, and almonds. So good! 🙂
Shannon @ Her Dog Blog says
Wonderful! I did a review on our local Great Harvest Bread’s dog treats! My dog loves them. Excellent value for the price, too! Glad you guys are selling them at your store. And don’t worry – I’ve tried them myself, too. 🙂
Angel7 says
You got food for all kinds 🙂 Branching out to the doggie world 🙂 I am sure the dogs appreciate it!
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
Olena (The Fit Gourmet) says
I also suggest making Doghouse “treats” for boyfriends and husbands for when they do something stupid. No sugar added, pls and lots of hardcore bran 😉
Keelie says
The placemat is so cute! And dog treats are an AWESOME idea! I hope they do well!
Khushboo says
Such a fun placemat although I’m not sure I’d want to be staring at WHILST I’m eating!
Hannah says
This reminds me of the time I tried canned cat food because it smelled good. NOT DELICIOUS FOR HUMANS.
Orla says
Are dogs meant to consume milk? I was told by out vet not to give our hounds milk as they are unable to digest it properly. I suppose that it could be subbed out with non dairy milk and the butter with a similar product.
Saying that – they are a great idea!
KathEats says
I am not entirely sure, but since this is an official Great Harvest recipe I’m sure they have cleared it with vets
Ashley J says
Dogs can have dairy products – we feed ours yogurt. It’s the sugar you want to limit.
Marissa says
Hmm… wheat is actually one of the most common allergies for dogs! Be careful; make sure you tell people that before you sell them the treats! I make my own treats for my boy; I always grind some oats into oat flour and use that instead (I don’t know if he’s actually allergic or not–but I’d rather not take the chance!) His favorite is turkey bacon + cheddar… I don’t know where he got a savory tooth from–his mom is all about the sweets, haha!
Lisa @ Fit in the Midwest says
Love that vintage calorie chart! So cute.
Good luck selling the dog treats!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
The dog treats look great!
And I make my own, so I should know. 😉
I make a mean peanut butter and pumpkin flavored doggie treat… sans dairy. (Not b/c dogs can’t have dairy, they can – but because I couldn’t stop my treats that had eggs in them from MOLDING in just a few days. Eww). They are crunchy and delicious, and stay that way for a month – and yes, I’ve tried them! Peanut butter and pumpkin together, why not? 🙂
Even though I make my own, I always buy any other homemade dog treats that I find in my travels. I figure my Lilly might like a change of taste now and then. (I don’t buy her any mass-produced treats).
