What a delightful evening! The husband made an awesome dinner and then we watched The Waitress, which was the cutest movie!
I ate the rest of my fruit during Foodservice
Along with this yummy Pecan Pie. LaraBars are the BEST to nibble on during class!
During his day off the husband cooked some navy beans from scratch. I told him to come up with a recipe for them including the remaining 3-4 cups of raw shredded cabbage in the fridge and here’s his creation:
BBQ Beans + Cabbage with Bacon and Okraed Orzo
Into a pot went 2 slices bacon, chopped
Which were removed for garnish when they were cooked
Then 2 cups of navy beans (cooked) and 3-4 cups green cabbage went in along with salt and pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder (all to taste).
Plus 2-3 tbsp Country Bob’s and 1/4 a cup or so of Bone Suckin’ Sauce – BBQ rivals! The whole mixture was simmered, covered, for about 15-20 minutes.
Meanwhile, I was hand-delivered this flute of leftover white wine and ordered to drink it!
On the side we cooked some orzo + added frozen okra in the last seconds of cooking, although rice would have been dandy. We’re having rice on Wed. and Fri. so we did something different. (I have no idea why the red stovetop is purple here!?!)
Everything was layered into a bowl and garnished with bacon and lite sour cream
He had two slices of buttered toast, and I had a few bites of those. That’s me cleaning wax that I spilled on the table in the background!
I loved The Waitress. Cute, cute, cute movie. And I’d like some real pie now please!

Kath! You were not kidding, that dinner does look delicious! I love the bacon topping 🙂
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
That dinner looks fantastic!! I’m thinking the stove was purple because it wanted to be! Weren’t you the one whose stove was spontaneously broken, then replaced? Stoves are persnickity like that…
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
I love that movie! It made me want pie too =)
Nicole says
The bacon on the paper towel looks like brains!! Hahah, I love it 😀
Wouldn’t it be so fabulous to have a purple stovetop burner? So pretty.

That dinner looks so creative and tasty.
Waitress was an awesome movie. Even my boyfriend liked it and he “doesn’t do chick flicks.” That’s really sad about the writer, though. I didn’t know about that.
Maggie says
I love the skin too 🙂
It would be cool if the stovetop was actually purple – it’s my favorite color!

Kath, what’s your favorite Larabar flavor?!?!? And i’m wondering, do you really think all the calories are worth it in the larabar?? For some reason it doesn’t hold me over very well…I get hungry fast. 😛
Jessica says
Kath! Your meals always look so delicious, well-rounded, and just amazing!!!
You really seem to just feed yourself well, meals with lots of volume, but still extremely healthy!!
How many calories do you shoot for each meal?? I tried finding that in your FAQ but couldn’t!!
Thanks! 🙂
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
I am the pie maker in our family. Every holiday a homemade pie, or three, is a must. I MUST see that movie!

kristin point,
Oh, my, that is horrible about your friend’s step mom. The site makes me appreciate the movie so much more.
Julia ,
As you can see, we’ve got a mish mosh of lots of bowls. We only have one full set of dinnerware, but I pick up bowls from all over when I find them on sale and just buy 1-2 at a time. I used to want to have everything match, but now I like the fun of having lots of colors and variety. I’ve also inherited a handful of antique dishes from my grandmother, so those add to the collection as well. I hope one day I can have a nice place to store all of the bowls + plates and display them in my house – right now they’re all stuffed into cabinets.
Michelle T,
Here’s a post where I outline my favorites:
https://www.katheats.com/taste-tests/
I do think LaraBars are worth it because I nibble through them and take a looong time to eat them. But I do save them for when I am hungry and if I just need something small to tide me over, I’d choose a few nuts or perhaps a Clif Nectar bar, which are similar in nutrition + ingredients list but are only about 140-160 calories. I’ve never really relied on bars to “fill me up” but mostly just to tide hunger until my next meal.
Jessica ,
I aim for 500 calories per meal – equal with B, L & D. Of course now that I’m not counting I’m sure you can give or take 100-200 and if I have a meal out that changes, or if I’m not that hungry. But that’s the general number. Then I usually have an afternoon snack and often a drink or dessert too.
PlayingRoulette ,
Awww, thanks 😉
