Mazen’s closet has been a dumping zone for toys since we moved in. His clothes are all folded in drawers except for a few jackets, so we have used his closet to store all of his toys. Talk about a mess! And a lot of wasted space. And as you might imagine, a lot of those toys were neglected due to being hard to reach.
For months I debated having shelves built that would stretch across the back wall and really maximize the space, but the cost and commitment of that had me procrastinating. I got a burst of energy one day and decided to do something about it, so I took the easy way out and drove to Target for a $44 cube storage piece.
It took me about an hour to assemble the whole thing, but once I did – man did it make a difference!!
Trucks now have parking garages, and cubes hold smaller toys like play animals, his tool set, puzzles and more.
To the right, we have a basket of more smaller trucks and his hats and backpack on hooks. I hung his coats on hangers for more space down below.
The top shelf still holds more toy sets that I will get down and rotate through as needed.
While we’re on the topic of toy storage, here are some more spots for them –
Books in the crate (and extras in a tub in the garage) –
Soft toys in a Land of Nod bin –
Fire station out in the open –
And favorite figurines and small toys in these bins –
Of course there are more toys in the basement and some outside as well, but these are the primary spots.
Mazen loves his new closet and so far, he likes tidying up as well! Tell me your best toy storage tips – or better yet share some pics!

I was having heart palpitations looking at the first photo. Not like you to not have every inch organized! Makes me feel more normal for having a full junk cabinet for arts and crafts, bill paying/card supplies, etc.
Love the new look of this closet! He must love it too.

What a difference! Looks great.

Looks great! But beware I did something similar for my daughter and she climbed up it to swing from the hanging rod. We ended up moving it ou of the closet. Hopefully Mazen won’t think of that trick.

We did the exact same in Margot’s room when we moved into our current house. Our old condo didn’t have a linen closet, so I had purchased the cube organizer to insert into a closet and hold towels there. When we moved, we finally had a proper linen closet, so I bought some colorful bins (and left some shelves open, just as you did) and put it in Margot’s closet for toy storage. We also have a toy box in the living room (my old wooden bench-style toy box) and small bins that fit neatly under our coffee table for books and smaller toys. She has a full bookcase in her bedroom for more books, and her toy kitchen is just there out in the open in her room, and some of her Little People play sets are out in the open in our living room. I think that’s all!

I thought when you moved you were outlawing house tour posts? I completely support this decision, but why blog about closet organization now?
KathEats says
Just not doing any grand home tours but I’m not opposed to writing about home stuff

Thank you for sharing your “home stuff” I for one truely enjoy reading about your home stuff BUT if you change your mind and decide to do a full on home tour I would love that as well!

Wow – do you guys do a lot of imaginative play? I can’t imagine my toddler being that organised!
And what do you do about the rest of your books – are the ones in the garage the ones that are too old for him?
Ruth says
The organization looks great! Be proud of yourself and I hope that you and Mazen are able to keep it organized for at least a little while 😉

I love the before and after, and I love that you are always willing to share your organizational secrets. I sometimes wonder if it’s possible to be organized as a young mom, and you’ve proven to me that it is possible!
