My taste in music is very eclectic. And there are only a few styles I do not like. All I need is a little positive memory association to love a particular song, which often opens up a whole genre.
Although I’ve always had a sense of the coolest songs, I’ve never been much of a pop listener. I couldn’t tell you the names of the songs or the artists. I’d only recognize something playing in Abercrombie.
But sometime between Y2 yoga and Gossip Girl, I have turned into a pop girl! When I get in my car to drive, I find the pop stations and dance out. I seem to know EVERY song that comes on. And while I still can’t tell you the song names or artists, I feel like I’m a little cooler these days : )
I was in charge of the first 1.5 hours from Cville to Warrenton to pay Pablo an after-hours visit. If you haven’t been to Warrenton, you should just to meet Pablo. He’s really one of the nicest guys in the world.
Matt and I taste tested a few breads
And I left with a toffee bar for dessert!
We decided to leave at 5PM tonight to avoid driving through Washington at rush hour, so I packed up dinner to eat in the car.
I made a salad with a base of wheatberries (which I simmered this morning) and wild canned salmon, plus veggies, capers, and pecans.
Super Salmon Salad
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup dry wheatberries simmered until tender
- 1 can wild Alaskan salmon
- 1 bell pepper diced
- 2 tbsp capers
- 2 cups baby spinach chopped
- 2 tbsp chopped pecans
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tsp dijon mustard
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Toss in dressing.
- Mix all together!
- Enjoy immediately or chill until ready.
We also snacked on grapes and some veggie sticks during our drive.
We’re settled in Columbia, Maryland to spend a few days with owners Jane and Chris learning some of the ropes of the bizness. I feel like we’re in Montana training all over again! Can’t wait to taste some Irish Soda Bread!
Not sure of my blogability, but I’ll see you soon!
Guess where we’re staying!?!!?
Kay (skinnybound) says

I’m the same way with music – I love most of it because of memories!
Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) says
Awesome on-the-go meal planning! I usually stick with a sandwich, but that salad definitely looks like it’s worth pulling over for 😉
Pop music is fun! I’m really good at remembering lyrics to songs and I love car-dancing, even if I do get some crazy looks 🙂
Have fun learning about bread!
hippierunner says
That toffee bar looks scrumptious!
Ashley @ Feeding Ashley says
Everything looks delicious! Your pictures are always so pretty and colorful. I’m in love with your table.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
I associate songs with times in my life…mostly pop songs due to high school and college parties. Have a great time learning bread stuff!
Courtney @ the granola chronicles says
Mmm, that toffee bar looks heavenly!
Larissa says
I can’t believe that loaf of bread is7.32! I would def be poor buying that. Is it usually that much ? At the gh here I think it’s only about 5. Have fun!
KathEats says
It depends on the bread, but it’s 2.2 pounds of goodness! Also depends on part of the country
Allison K. says
I had that same thought! Here in Idaho I think it’s more like $4-5 a loaf.
larissa h says
it is good i agree! i have bought it here before ( cherry hill nj) i was just surprised how much more expensive it was when you are not that far away.. this like this always just make me think!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

I had a sample of one of our GH’s Irish Soda Bread chocked full of raisins this weekend and it was fabulous!! That Dakota is just a few a tad more than ours, not a ton! Our Dakota is 6.75 and Whole Wheat Goodness is 5.75?
Sophie says
I mean Honey Whole Wheat! I think all the breads say Whole Wheat Goodness 😉
Brittany says
Dance car parties are the best, especially when they turn into dance car party vlogs! ha 🙂
And Great Harvest Bread Company is soooo good, i love their scones!
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says
I am with you on never knowing the names of songs or artists in pop songs! 🙂 I guess I’m not that cool.
Sarah says
If you’re in Columbia, you HAVE to go to Sushi Sono. It’s on the waterfront, by Columbia Mall and is the best sushi I have ever had. Anywhere.
Namaste Gurl says
Glad you made it safely! Have a good evening 🙂
Lesley Lifting Life says
I’ll take some of that Irish soda bread too, please! 😉
Abby says
Yum! Love seeing all of your on the go meals! 🙂
Kate Z. says
I also am from Columbia and I second the Sushi Sono recommendation! The bridal veil roll and the hurricane roll are my two favorites there. There’s also a really cute vegetarian place called Great Sage nearby in Clarksville (10 mins?) which has great food. Have fun!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
Wow that is an awesome salad for the road! Usually we just have Pb&J for car rides.
I’m glad you made it safe and sound, have a great time!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
So cute about the music… I definitely got more into the “new music” when I started driving more. It’s incredible how much talent is out there!
What a lovely bakery! That bread and bar look fantastic!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
You’ve reached a whole never level of impressive with your on-the-road dinner! I thought of you as I packed up my PB for my trip today. Thanks for the inspiration to eat better whilst traveling. 🙂
Emily @ Savory and Savage says
Have fun on your trip. That salad looked great!
ilana says
Homewood Suites?! 😉 Hope it all goes swimmingly.
Jennifer says
Homewood Suites! It’s my favorite too. Especially good for traveling with kids so the adults don’t have to go to sleep at 7:30 or 8 when the kiddos do.

I am the same way, I can never name an artist that is playing but I know all the songs. I frequently get caught saying “This is Katy Perry (Insert artists name here: Madonna, Rihanna etc)?”. I am clueless, but love to dance!

Safe trip! And I’m more of a Broadway girl myself 🙂

Lauren says
Enjoy your trip Kath!

Yay for GH Columbia! This is the one I go to and they are super friendly there. The Irish Soda Bread does sound good but this one sounds better: Reuben Bread! They are only having it on St. Patty’s day though, right? I’m toying with the idea of picking up a loaf, even though I’m still working on the White Chocolate Fruit Swirl and Gouda Stout (this stuff is beyond awesome, get your paws on it if you can) from last week.
For breakfast or brunch on that side of town, Eggspectations is great. They’re open for dinner, too, and serve breakfast around the clock. Sounds like a diner but is nothing like that. The muffins are enormous and the smoothies are great.
Once you are in Baltimore, try to get to Woodberry Kitchen. GREAT local and sustainable menu and great buzz. It is impossible to make a reservation for just a few days out, but the bar opens at 5 and it is a full menu. There are a few hightop tables, too, so you don’t have to be crammed in. If you can’t get to Woodberry Kitchen, Dogwood Cafe also does the local and sustainable thing. The bar is smaller and not the best place to eat but it is also easier to get a reservation there.
Happy Eatin’!
Simply Life says
those salads look great and I LOVE that quote on the wall! 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I hope you have a great trip Kath!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I can never name any of the current artists on the radio either! It makes it really hard to find them when I want to download the songs I hear to put on my workout playlist. 😛
Christie {Nourishing Eats} says
I typically drive in silence, I get my best thinking done when I am driving. I joke that my car is my think tank. I actually told one of my clients that a couple of weeks ago and now she is calling her car her think tank 😀
Glad you arrived safely!
Melissa says
Just have to tell you, your hair is so so cute. I love it! Hope you are getting used to it. 🙂
Enjoy your trip!
Sandy says
I’m guessing Homewood Suites. I got into Pop music when I started going to Jazzercise. Now I am always surfing stations to find a song I know, usually on a Top 40 station but sometimes on a country station. It makes me feel so much younger than listening to Classic Rock or the things that I know from college years.
Stace says
When ever I drive from PA down to NC where I went to college, I always wait and leave at a time to avoid DC traffic too! It can be the worst. When ever I see your pictures of GH bread I want some right then and there but no GH by me 🙁
Katie @ cooklaughmove says
I saw this article and instantly thought of you and your GH! http://www.mlive.com/kalamabrew/index.ssf/2011/03/made_with_michigan_beer_great.html
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
I am a pop music junkie and not ashamed to admit it! I feel like I spend so much of my day using my brain at work and such, sometimes it’s nice to just put on something light and fun. I always listen to the radio while getting dressed in the morning – starts the day on a happy note! 🙂
kate@ahealthypassion says
The bread looks delicious as does your salads. Have fun on your little trip cant wait to hear about it!
Jess (Daly Authenticity) says
I am so bummed! My husband and I just spent a night at an amazing B&B in Columbia, MD last week and I didn’t realize there was a GH there! I totally would have made a visit, as I’ve never been to one!
Kim says
Hey Kath,
Have fun in Columbia (our hometown)! If you’re looking for a great dinner- we love Iron Bridge Wine Company, which is kind of down the street from Columbia GH (route 108). It’s set up in a cozy little house and we always end up there for our date nights.
Hope says
That GH looks so cute! I really love your haircut! I really need to get my cut asap! Have fun in Maryland!!
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
I love dance parties in the car – there’s nothing better! 🙂
Chloe @ 321delish says
any chance great harvest will make it into the D.C. area?!?! I want to try their bread so badly 🙂
KathEats says
It’s already there! Alexandria I know for sure
Tina says
I like to think I have an eclectic music taste as well, I will listen to almost anything, though I definitely have my favorites. But when I’m in the car, I can’t help but listen to all the top 40 tunes. I’m that girl that drives and sings and…occasionally dances. 😉 It’s just good driving music sometimes (or workout tunes)!
Anne (butter and bear) says
That is a pretty amazing looking meal for “to go” food. I am always impressed with your meal planning abilities:-)
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i want irish soda bread!!!
Kait says
if you’re looking for a good run in this dreary weather, try in and around centinnel park. they host an irongirl triathlon every year with the Ulman Fund (young adult cancer support group) and its beautiful. pretty lake, trees, some hills in a loop. enjoy columbia. its beautiful.
Caitlin says
Woah!!! Why is there Dakota so expensive? I think it’s $5 in Charlotte.
Kayla says
My fiance makes fun of me for knowing every.single.word. to every.single.song. on the Top 40 stations around here. I just tell him it’s my superwoman ability to instantly absorb lyrics and regurgitate them. 🙂
Camille says
I am such a nerd when it comes to music. If it didn’t play on last week’s Glee or it isn’t off the newest Taylor Swift CD then I am pretty clueless! My little sister is one of those uber cool kids who wears a lot of eye-liner and goes to concerts for bands I have never heard of 🙂
laura says
Yum that salad looks delicious! You think it would work out with some sardines instead of salmon? I have an excess of wheatberries & sardines in my cabinet and am tryin to use them up!
Stephanie @ Walking my Talk says
I love that mission statement! It kinda works as a life slogan as well.
Natalia - a side of simple says
Gossip Girl seriously has some of the best music! Oh how I miss it when it goes on break 🙁
Joanne says
The “Be Loose….” quote on the wall is great. Like it!
Susan (Oliepants) says
The first time I tried Irish Soda bread was at Whole Foods and I totally fell in love. In addition my more-than-just-normal-sampling-samples, I left with a loaf too!
PS Toffee bars and me are good friends. 🙂
Erin @ Big Girl Feats says
I have really been into the pop lately. It’s so bad – but it’s so good!
Amy says
Ohemgee, toffee bar. And your salads always look way delish! You should be ahead of some governmental eat-green movement.
I am like that too with music. When I’m in the car and I hear a song from a few years ago, memories and feelings from that period in my life come flooding in. Warm fuzzy feelings ensue and it normally translates into a positive change of mood for the rest of the day. Music is wonderful/magical like that. 🙂
If you’re looking for some new music to get into (and haven’t already been introduced to it), check out Mumford and Sons and Florence and the Machine. Florence gets me going in the morning (or dancing around the house after a rough day)! Some of songs have a pop flare if you’re into that right now.

I love the quote on the wall! I have never heard that before

I made this salmon salad today, with a few of my own modifications (like adding onion – the horror!), and it was fantastic! Loved the idea of adding wheat berries for another texture, chew, and good carbs.
Stephanie L. Tinker says
I have a Blogger blog that is hooked up to my personal website. The actual blog is linked off of the homepage. I would like to know if there’s a widget or something that I can put on my website’s homepage that will show my latest blog posts. Not the whole post, but maybe just the headline and a link to go to my blog..
Adina says
Hey Kath,
Is it alright if I use this recipe on the weekly online newsletter for our college’s gym? With referance to you of course!

Yup! Thanks
