We celebrated my dad’s 70th birthday in Charlottesville this weekend. Here is the recap of his basketball themed party, hiking trip, and more.

Happy 70th Dad!
This past weekend the Younger fam came up for a visit and we celebrated dad’s 70th birthday with all of his favorite things: a basketball pizza party (complete with a Duke cake!), Chinese food, hiking, a vineyard afternoon, and his grandchildren all around him. We had Sarah Cramer Shields come take family portraits to remember the weekend by. A priceless memory! I’ll be sharing a lot of the pics later this week.
Dad wasn’t the only one getting gifts upon arrival – Gus got a new lobster from Grammie!
Friday: Dinner at Peter Chang’s
On Friday everyone drove up, and we piled into our car to head to Peter Chang’s for dinner. Dad LOVES Chinese food, so we surprised him with this dinner by telling him we were going to a very expensive farm-to-table restaurant. He was very pleased!
Thomas went to see about a birthday dessert, and they came out with a clementine as the best option. Our server said it represented good luck!
Saturday Hike
Saturday morning we fueled up for a hike!
Ellen, an avid hiker, was our guide and helped us choose a trail. While we would have liked to drive up to the mountains, the Ragged Mountain trail was our pick for its proximity to downtown and scenic reservoir lake. It was stunning! Thank you Ellen for helping organize!
The little kids stayed back with mom at the house, and we hiked about 4 miles in perfect weather.
Sandwiches from Bellair
On our way home we picked up an order of Bellair Market sandwiches. Always so good after a hike!
Girls Afternoon
The boys had plans for golf in the morning, so the girls headed out for some shopping! We went to J Crew Factory where I got this dress.
And then to use our time wisely, we sipped coffees and teas at Greenberry’s!
Note the placement of tattoos the day before family photos 😉

Basketball Pizza Party
On Saturday night we had a basketball themed pizza party for dad.
While UVA might have been the beer theme, the cake theme was just for dad! Caked Up Cville made us an epic Duke cake! We all raved about how perfect it was for dad who was a Duke bball season ticket holder my whole childhood. If you didn’t know, my parents met at Duke.
It was a slam dunk!
We had several games planned: Cliff Trivia, Name That Tune from his favorite songs, and charades. He also was gifted many tins of mixed nuts – his favorite!
Sunday
On Sunday morning, the young dads played golf, and the Younger dad and company went to the playground!
Family Pics
We had our session with Sarah at 1:00 and love all the pics she captured!
Sunday Funday
We ended the day at King Family Vineyards with cheese, wine, and games.
Everyone was full and tired when we retired with a movie for the night. We had easy quiche, soup, and pot pies for dinner.
The kids spent so much time on the trampoline! We are missing them. Sarah captured these great shots!
It was a great family-filled weekend!

I agree, Leslie! Longtime reader here, too. I feel oddly fond of these parents who are not my own. Love seeing them pop up here, Kath. And Gus. I’m pro dog-in-family-photos. Best to all, Amy G.

What an incredible weekend! You inspired my party planning for my dads 80th coming up 🙂
Also, what is in that pre-hike breakfast bowl? Looks delish and I am currently in a rut. Thanks! Happy early Thanksgiving!
Kath Younger says
Yay! And the bowl was plain greek yogurt, granola, fruit salad, and coconut peanut butter!
