Lyss was the first to guess right!
Free cone day!! When my lunch left me wanting something more I turned to yogurt. And then I thought about ice cream and remembered from Tina’s post that it’ was the big day. As soon as Matt got home I announced we were going 🙂
Being prime after-school hour, there was a long line….
But I was patient… It only took us about 20 minutes to get in.
OH THE CHOICES!!!!!!!! I actually really like the Yogurt Fudge Brownie, but the last time we went here Nate, who always chooses the best foods in restaurants, got the Oatmeal Cookie Chunk and was kind enough to let me taste it. He was right – it was the best. So that’s what I got today! Oatmeal was the most blog appropriate too
I got it in a cone, in a cup. Maximum taste + maximum eating slowly.
He got the usual: peanut butter covered in peanut butter in peanut butter cookie dough.
Dinner more than made up for my sub-par lunch!
Beans + Greens
+ Cinnamon SP Fries in Maple Syrup!
We cooked some bacon + garlic, added chicken broth, 1 cup cooked beans and a huge bunch of trimmed + washed turnip greens to a pot = all cooked together. Finished with a drizzle of maple to go with the mataters.
These guys were sliced, put on a bed of foiled, sprayed with canola cooking spray, sprinkled with cinnamon and cooked for 20 minutes on one slide, flipped and 10 on the other at 425*. PERFECTION!
While the oven was hot, Matt put some leftover bread cubes in to make some croutons. Tossed in a little oil, salt and pepper and toasted for 15 minutes or so. Can’t WAIT to eat more of these!
I just had a spark of motivation to work on my oatmeal paper. Hope it lasts!!
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Yay for ice cream! And love those SP fries. I’ll be making that soon for sure!
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says

rhodeygirl says
my sister in law’s recipe:
makes 4 small crab cakes (each cake about the size of a poached egg)
2 cans lump crab meat (drained & dried really well with paper towels)
1 egg
old bay seasons
finely chopped scallions
finely chopped dill
salt & pepper
heat 1/4 inch olive oil to medium high.
mix all ingredients.
form into pucks.
using a spatula carefully slide cakes into oil (will easily break).
cook 5 minutes on each side.
enjoy 🙂
she says the most important part is to dry the crab really well.
also, thanks for your response. I think I may be eating my lunch wayyyy too early and then i eat my snack at lunch and then i’m stuck. thanks for your tips.
Marissa says
Yay free 🙂

Darn, I totally forgot it was free cone day! I’ve never been, but it looks like a good deal. And fun because all the crowds. Who knew ice cream could bring such crowds!
Annie says
darn it- there’s no b&j in this town where i live. 🙁
but i’m loving the sp chippies!!!
zestycook says
YUM on the ice cream Kath! I loves it 🙂

What a great flavor of ice cream! Ben & Jerry’s is the best way to splurge, especially in the nice weather!
Those SP fries look so good. I am definitely trying them out for myself!

Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
DARN! No Ben and Jerry’s around here 🙁 Maybe I’ll have to get myself a pint from the grocery store 🙂
Lindsey (Mrs. LC) says
You look beautiful outside of Ben & Jerry’s sitting in the sun! Wish I had a B&J around me, I would totally hit up the free cone!
Jessica says
I chose the exact same flavor as Matt, it was divine!
ashley says
i make sp fries all the time. it has become one of my favorites. i don’t feel like i am close enough to my goal weight to indulge in ice cream but it sure did look fabulous! i’m so jealous.
ps- i have told everyone about your blog, i’m so hooked
Sharon says
AWWWHHH, I wish we had a ben and jerry’s in my area! But sadly, there is none. 🙁
Nadine says
I LOVE free cone day. I only wish there was a donation jar on the counter for guests to give to which Ben & Jerry’s would then donate to an important charity of theirs. The line is always better than it looks 😉
Sarah says
I have tried several times and can never seem to get my sweet potatoes to turn out that good. I love them so much but they are always way better when other people make them! I’ll keep trying though. 🙂
Too bad there wasn’t a peanut butter oatmeal Ben & Jerry’s! (Or maybe there is, we don’t have B&J here.)
Erin says
I made croutons tonight too, sooo much better than store-bought.
Cute plate and bowl!!
Wow, what a line for ice cream. Kath, are you a redhead? That 1 pic makes you look like it. Freckles!
Elizabeth says
Mmm – good flavor choice! What a beautiful day for a cone! 🙂
brandi says
we got ice cream today, too! i love their oatmeal cookie one.
i tried the chocolate macadamia today and it was really good!
Sally says
I worked at Ben & Jerry’s for a couple of summers. Oatmeal Cookie is so good – it was really exciting in the store when that flavor came out. I probably had a few too many tastes… Also, peanut butter ice cream may be tasty but it is a pain to scoop! Something about the peanut butter makes the ice cream a little crumbly so it is difficult to make nice round scoops. I wish there was a Ben & Jerry’s near me so I could get a free cone – enjoy your treat!
Sccop says
Ben & Jerry’s and bacon in one day! Go girl – I love your perspective about food and how you don’t deprive yourself.
Priyanka says
Free ice creams and sweet potatoes with the maple syrup…YUMMY!
Christine says
I got my free ice cream cone too, but luckily there was no line!! I was mentally prepared for a line though, I was raised by my mommy to go out of my way for free things!! 🙂 Then right after the ice cream I got my $0.50 iced coffee from Dunkin Donuts!! While there I saw that on April 29th will be $0.31 scoop night at Baskin Robbins! I’ll be sure to be there too!!
K says
Well, I guess free ice cream is better than wine 😉 Love the sweet potato rounds!!
Marci says
Nate does always order the best thing on the menu. I’m glad you took his advice.
LK- Healthy Delcious says
free cone day was tormenting me today!! It was a 10 minute walk from work, but I was too busy and knew I couldn’t be gone for that long.
Michelle T says
hehhe i have the HARDEST time picking which my favorite B&J flavor is, but oatmeal cookie is definitely up there!!! It’s SO nice to see pictures of a place in this nation wher ethere’s sunshine and people in short sleeved t-shirts! hahahaha
I totally don’t believe you when you said those crab cakes are bad. That really looks good!!! I guess looks can be decieving huh? 🙂
meg says
Yeah for free ice cream, and I think you made an excellent flavor choice!
thepinkpeppercorn says
Looks like a balanced day after all!
Hallie says
Oatmeal overload LOL. That flavor sounds delicious.
I love free ice cream in theory, but I HATE waiting in lines so I can’t imagine even hanging on for 20 minutes. 31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins is coming up soon too, but I’d rather pay the $2 (or whatever they charge now) and go another night to avoid the lines 🙂
Adi (oatonomy.com - repaired!) says
Free ice cream — what a day! I think McDonald’s was starting to give out free coffee today, too.
Sending oatmeal-paper-inspiration your way 🙂
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
Is it wrong that I’d rather have your sweet taters than your ice cream? MMM…what about cinnamon sweet potato ice cream?! Yum!
Missy Maintains says
I am sad I missed free cone day! There are no locations near me! Luckily my boyfriend keeps Ben & Jerry’s in the freezer! I need to try the Oatmeal Raisin now!
Help Meghan Run says
Whoa! First of all, I haven’t been to B&J in years, but the oatmeal one was always my favorite flavor. 🙂 And second, those sweet potatoes look amazing. I am writing down that recipe and keeping it!

Oatmeal cookie chunk is definitely my favorite B&J flavor, but I haven’t yet tried to pumpkin cheesecake flavor. Almost bought it, but was trying to be good. It would have been gone in one sitting, I know.
