Early to bed, early to bound out of bed for a run. Considering all the consumption on this trip, I sure have had great morning runs. I’m not sure why! On a normal week at home I can barely find the energy to go in the AM. I wonder if it’s eating so much before going to bed that’s filling up my muscle energy stores 😉
We’re staying right on the Embarcadero, so we had the perfect running route just steps away. We headed left towards the Golden Gate and had the MOST BEAUTIFUL views!!! The sunrise was hitting it with the ideal glow.
The run towards the bridge was great because, although I didn’t realize it at the time, we had the wind on our backs. 8:15 miles easy! The run back was not as easy and a few hills plus the wind slowed us into the 9:00 pace. All in all, 5.33 miles of breakfast running.
There was discussion of Ferry Building breakfast and all kinds of AM ideas, but we realized we had less time and more ground to cover than we though, so we had to settle for Starbucks.
[Holy white balance error!!!]
Grande Misto for her, Pikes Place for him
It’s far from perfect, but they make a good effort 🙂
Amped up with banana, half of the packets of raisins and nuts, Frog Hollow granola and a spoonful of Ashley’s Pumpkin Spice Almond Butter. STILL IN LOVE!
I am craving:
- Lentil soup (random week-long craving!)
- Carrots
- Virginia apples
- Green smoothies
- Bleu cheese over garden greens
- Sunny side up eggs
- Raw spinach
- Tomato paste
- Plain yogurt
- Roasted sweet potatoes
- Green beans
Take me home!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Blue cheese over garden greens sounds good to me. With some bacon crumbled on top!
Susan says
Oh that does sound good!
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
I hate when I do that with the white balance. Sometimes in certain lighting its hard to tell until its too late and then you’re left with a bunch of blue or yellow pics. Blah.
Still got all the really good photos captured for us to look at – the food and scenery. 🙂
Cyndie says
I always crave numerous foods when I’m on vacation! Especially fresh veggies. I can only be on vacation for so long. 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Tomato paste? Really 😉
You’re too funny!
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
Is there really anything better than a trip to Starbucks? It may sound silly, but I think it’s one of the most comforting places. Starbucks and Panera.
alana (at) the food says
i agree…starbucks is ssooo comforting!
alana (at) the food says
im going to start keeping track of my cravings..how interesting!

I bet you can’t wait to be home eating your own food. Vacay is nice, but I get tired of eating out all the time.
Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat says
One of the main reasons I want to go on vacation is so that I have new scenery to look at during my runs! Maybe being in a new place is giving you the energy and motivation to get out there and RUN 🙂
faith @ gracefulfitness says
I am roasting sweet pots at this moment, come on over!
Amy K. @ onehealthypeanut says
The views and scenery in San Fran can definitely distract you from the massive hills!! Love the holiday cups at Starbucks, they make me feel warm and cozy just looking at them 🙂
Gavi @ GaviGetsGoing! says
I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed your stay in San Francisco and your beautiful runs! I am a San Francisco girl, and I really think it’s one of the best running spots in the world. There is gorgeous scenery everywhere you turn! I hope you have a safe trip back home! 🙂
Dorry says
Mmm – your cravings list has me thinking…big pot of lentil soup this weekend! And I agree about Starbucks oatmeal – as long as you have something to jazz it up, it makes a decent starting point. 🙂
Christin@purplebirdblog says
I have been eating the hell out of some tomato paste lately! Putting it in everything! I love that concentrated tomato-y-ness! 🙂
Joanna says
Green Smoothies, totally get cravings for those. YUM! They just make me fool good.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I always crave fresh veggies and green smoothies after I’ve been eating out for multiple meals.
Sounds like a beautiful running route!
kate says
I love that you are craving tomato paste!

lobe tomato paste sammies!!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I always crave my “home” foods after awhile away! Have a safe trip home!!
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
I know what you mean about vacation cravings. I do it, too. In fact, I always crave green beans when I’m on vacay. EVERY time, and yet, it isn’t really something I eat all that often. So weird.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Carrots are definitely the first thing I crave when I’ve been away from home for a while, followed by other veggies in general! I find my intake goes severely downwards when I’m traveling and it always feels so so good to load up on them all again when I get home. Awesome run! 🙂
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i’ll take lentil soup any day! is it possible to have a all-encompassing craving like that? 🙂
Kat says
I feel that I have more energy for exercising too when I eat a lot. Others don’t get it because they feel weighed down. Its strange isn’t it?
I love starbucks 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
That’s good thinking about the energy storage. It’d make sense that muscles would have more energy stored up in the morning after a large meal at night since your body’s going through glycolysis and making ATP, but it’s not spending it while sleeping. Cool! That could be why I’m always so much more energized for morning workouts than afternoon ones.
Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow says
I always get to that point on my trip where I want 1- home and 2- what my body craves which is usually fruit n veggies!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Haha, I had a weird lentil soup craving last week too and totally took care of it. Funny how you start to miss random foods from home when you are on trips like that.
Elle (thewaybyelle.blogspot.com) says
The granola looks like dessert to me! I need to make up a batch as soon as I can, but I’m kind of going through a break from much eating, relying upon smoothies and shakes for most of my nutrition. I can tell why you are having cravings with all that yummy food around! ; )
polly says
mmmm tomato paste! 🙂 Kath, I have it almost everyday. On top of chicken, some fresh spinach (another of your cravings :P) and lots and lots of GOAT CHEESE. The goat cheese is cold, but all other parts are warm, just barely. SO good. Try it!
Big hugs and be safe on your way home. Yay for home. XOXO and Yay for eggs. I like mine soft boiled, just a teeny bit soft in the middles. Wanna fly to Indiana on your way back, and I’ll make you lunch. 😀

i always crave a good salad after lots of indulging! it is interesting, if i eat TOO much at night, i have trouble working out the next morning because of stomach troubles, but if i just eat a bit more than normal i tend to have more energy
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I still haven’t tried starbucks’ oatmeal but i’m almost looking for an excuse to..
Rachel says
tomato paste is an awfully strange thing to crave…
Running into the wind is so hard! It’s amazing what a difference it makes.
Nancy K @ NancysPerfect10 says
I agree! After travelling and eating out I always crave some good home cooking.
I <3 Starbucks "Perfect Oatmeal"
Liz O says
I bet you have more energy b/c your body is still on east coast time…. so going for a 7 am run in SF is like 10 back home. I’ve had the same thing when vacationing on the west coast. Glad you’re taking advantage of the energy & getting in some good runs!
Kath says
OH I didn’t think of that! Maybe so 🙂
Kristina says
Just a quick note – Peets is a good Starbucks substitute in the Bay area, and it is more or less local, since it originated there!
Kath says
If there had been a Peets closeby I would have gone
Kristina says
Okay – sorry! I never know if people are as aware of Peets as they are of Starbucks (which, I heard, is EXPANDING).
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
That’s the one bad thing about vacations – not being able to have all the food you crave! At least you’ve been able in indulge in tons of other great food on this trip though. 😉
stacey-healthylife says
I always start to crave my own foods and own cooking when on trips.
Hannah says
Surely the oatmeal is perfect so long as the company is, and I bet this morning’s company was rather wonderful 😉
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I always crave veggies and fruit galore when I have overdone it. Maybe your runs are better because you’re giving your body the fuel it needs. Intense cardio is very demanding!
Chelsea says
This may sound silly, but what is the difference between a misto and a latte taste wise? I know what a misto and latte each contain, but it seems like they would ultimately taste the same? Usually I order a latte at Starbucks, but the misto sounds interesting, and I read on their website it is actually lower in calories. Any insight on this? 🙂
Kath says
They taste the same – the only difference is the amount of milk. A misto has less so it’s a bit less thick and also less calories.
