Welcome to our home in Charlottesville, VA!
We start the tour just inside our front door, in the foyer + formal living room.
[Note the door is changing and the storm door will be banished in time!]
Just inside the door I have a chest that my dad won in a contest at a furniture store. It stores our keys in the metal bucket and also houses gloves, scarves and hats plus the top drawer full of misc. “I’m going out the door” things like sunglasses, Garmin and chapstick. All out of sight!
To the left we have a Crate + Barrel storage unit that also serves as a landing spot for things like Matt’s hat or the mail before I swoop them away to better locations!
Inside you’ll find all of my linens!! These boxes are from IKEA
Above that is our Starry Nights Over Wine Country painting – a souvenir we bought on our honeymoon that I had framed at Michael’s.
More wedding items include these green balls that were in our centerpieces which sit next to an oil lamp my grandmother gave me that I had re-shaded.
And straight ahead – you peek into the dining room
Just around the corner is our coat closet. This is our third house but our first coat closet! I love having it here just for big coats and my purse of the week. The top shelf basket has rain gear like ponchos and umbrellas.
Our couch and chairs are inherited from Karen’s old house (my mother in law). When she moved out she got new furniture and gave us the couch, two black arm chairs, pillows, the black diamond end tables and lamps on top. She also gave us the rug – which was cut down to fit her Charlottesville home and we got the scraps – which were quite big!
My little modern coffee table is IKEA – I hope to get something grander some day.
The chairs on the other side of the sitting area were my grandmother’s. They were red velvet and I had them reupholstered a few years ago into this funky green pattern. See their before look here and here. See the decision making process here.
The corner houses a matching Crate + Barrel cabinet topped with a Crate + Barrel lamp (wedding gift!) and many bowls from my dish collection. The vases on top are TAG brand that were featured in OpenSky. The cake stand and Great White Platter are Pottery Barn!
The bookcases on the far wall are Billy bookcases from IKEA.
They are two wide cases side-by-side with the glass doors and the extender unit on top. Also the matching lights. Please note not to forget the 2 extra cords if you purchase these lights! Love this bookcase.
Another item of note – a beautiful Charlottesville map my friend Meredith made for us!! <3
The curtains in this room were a Pottery Barn splurge when we bought our first house in Charlotte – dupioni silk and my favorite shade of green
Also off the living room is the walk-up attic, a huge selling point of this house!
The inside door houses some of our cleaning supplies as well as all of the boxes that come to my house that we break down and recycle about every other week:
Up top we have TONS of storage including luggage, Christmas décor, memorabilia, a folding bike, the footboard to our guest bed and more.
Right outside of the attic you’ll find a painting of the Burwell School in Hillsborough – where we had our rehersal dinner!

Your house is gorgeous! And I can’t believe how much of it is repurposed!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
Oh my gosh….gorgeous….I could move right in. It looks like the room was taken right out of Coastal/Cottage Living Mag. Great job.
Amanda says
I love how your living room is so bright and airy. There’s also a really nice mix of modern and antique (like the Ikea bookcases and coffee table, as well as the reupholstered chairs). It feels very comfortable. 🙂
Great job putting together this post!
Halley says
I love it!! Your style and home is beautiful. And how fun that so much of the furniture and decorations have such meaning behind them. Awesome!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
you guys are so grown up! beautiful home, kath. i hope by the time i’m 40 my place will look half as put together!
Christena says
I love your living room. It is actually very inspiring. You have so many meaningful pieces – love the fact that you reshaded the oil lamp & reupholstered the chairs – sounds obvious, but I actually never think to repurpose heirloom gifts. The way that you combined everything also inspires me. It is not matchy-matchy and I would have never thought of putting lots of those things together, especially with the blue walls — but it totally works — everything goes together and looks fantastic. Finally, it is bright, airy, clean & simple, but it still has personality. A+! 🙂 Thanks for letting us have a peek!
Amy says
Heavens what a stunning home–so fresh and crisp and breezy looking. It must be fun to wake up there every day. Adore the black and white furniture and the glassed bookshelves. Lovely.

Kath your house is gorgeous…wow. I am truly amazed at not only what you have done but how FAST you have done it. Seriously though within in 2 days of moving in, you had more done than most people get done in a year. Or ever 🙂
You have really created a HOME that is both beautiful and functional. And these pics are gorgeous. I can tell you spent more than just a few minutes on them 🙂
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
I just missed seeing your cottage in person! Guess this means I’ll have to make a trip down. Not surprised it’s the cutest cottage in Cville!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Very cute! Looks just like I imagine a KERF cottage would. 😀 Very “Kath.”
Excellent storage space in the attic! Storage space is so important!! You can never have enough, as far as I’m concerned. 😉

Kath go back and read this post. There is a mistake I’m sure you will want to correct. You typed attack but I think you meant attic. Love your home look forward to seeing the rest. Thanks for sharing. Aldo…Thanks for introducing me to your mom’s blog. I am enjoying it as well as yours.

I love the idea of reupholstering antique chairs. My grandmother has a bunch that she’s handing down to me, and I’m looking forward to putting a funky pattern on them to jazz it up a bit!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
beautiful, kath! i hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but i love your “mismatched” style. so often rooms are matchy-matchy with fabric, wall color, pillows, etc., but i love that you bring in ideas, colors, and themes from so may different avenues. you are a fabulous designer! btw — great squash centerpiece 🙂
KathEats says
🙂 Thanks!
Elisabeth says
I agree! You’ve put it all together in a perfect, whimsical way. I especially love the reupholstered chairs 🙂
Susan Mc says
Your home has come together beautifully! Fab post! I went back to look at the decision post on your chairs…so I know totally too late, but I realized that your chairs include upholstery on front and back. I would have been fun to do the big print just on the backs of each chair, but I love the smaller one best…great choice!
Can’t wait for the rest of the “tour”…esp. that hole in the ground out back????????!!!!!
KathEats says
Kathleen above said I’m not matchy, but I think I’d have to match the chair backs!

VERY nice decorating. I too LOVE my Billy bookcases. Just a suggestion, you might want to add a few glass shelves for your bowls in the bookcases. They’ll look like they’re floating and their individual beauty will display beautifully..
KathEats says
Don’t think i’d ever have the energy to change them..

Your home is just lovely!
Kathy W. says
SO pretty! Each of your houses has had their own personality/look, even with some of the same furniture–the sign of a born decorator!!
jealous of that attic space with windows. Just imagine what you could do up there if you finished it. I think the latest issue of This Old House magazine has a section on attic spaces–some cool ideas.

Cheryl says
kath, your home looks great. My hubby was in the Navy and i have moved over 11 times (not bad for a 24 year spread). But I always loved setting up a new house. Now we are in our final home and I dont’ get to do quite the re-decorating that I used to. Thank you for opening the door and letting us into your home and sharing. I love all the natural light, makes a home look so lovely.
leatitia says
Another great series of posts coming up! Love those!!!
You have such a beautiful home. I wish I had your talent to decorate. My house is all mismatched hand down furnitures. But not in the good way.

Wow! Your house is beautiful. It looks like it could be in the pages of a magazine! 🙂
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
I love incorporating antiques into more modern decor. My favorite way of decorating!
Mel @ Post Grad Mel says
Oh I love this! Your living room is beautiful. I love the mix of modern and vintage items with eclectic patterns and colors. I also enjoy how you incorporated various aspects of your wedding into it. I was at World Market the other day dreaming about the day I can decorate a home of my own (no rhyme intended!). But alas, I’m joining the Peace Corps in March so something tells me it’ll be awhile before I settle down!
PS- I was looking forward to this post ALL week!
Laura Ann says
Not that you need *another* career, but have you thought about doing interior design professionally? I’d totally hire you!

Gosh, your living room is beautiful. I’m a huge fan of the patterns–funky/fun, but still classy/put-together! And I ADORE that painting. I have relatives who live near wine country in California, so it reminds me of that..and the Starry Night twist is awesome!

It’s so much fun to see everything in detail! I didn’t even notice the “Starry Nights Over Wine Country” when we were there but I LOVE that piece! You are too sweet for including the Cville map 😉 I’m so glad you guys like it!
KathEats says
🙂 I think we hadn’t hung it yet!
Jaime says
How did you make that map?! Such a clever idea and sooo pretty! I’d really like to learn how to do that for my friends that are moving.
Lindsay says
Oh Kath this was SO fun! I adored this post and a peek (but not a creeper like peek) into your home! The living room is so fresh and inviting, and I adore the cases for the dishes…a girl can dream! Someday we’ll get to settlIe down and really invest in “our” place, wherever that ends up being…but until that day I am loving picking up ideas along the way, and the way that the colors, the furniture and your very personal touches just make this room SING! I really love how such light vibrant colors still make the room feel very warm and homey…I’m usually a brown, red, taupey gal for living rooms…but this gave me hope to break out of my shell!
Karen Ball says
I am completely blown away! (And obviously way behind…) Girl – what a transformation! So glad I got to see the Before. Love it.
