^^ Just your average Wednesday walk to school
I am working on travel plans to both Chicago and Los Angeles for a big partnership I am doing this month, so I spent my morning working through paperwork for that. Excited to tell you more!
I missed my window to go to strength class today so I decided to run instead. This decision was also swayed by the fact that, according to the weatherman, today is our last sunny day in a while.
I almost missed my window to go for a run too because I was getting so hungry, so I had a nice banana before talking Gussie for a quick 3 mile run.
Just minutes after the above photo was taken we ran into a SNAKE!! No thank you!!! I immediately turned around. The encounter got me thinking about those of you who run into alligators or worse…bears!… on your runs. Tell me, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever stumbled upon during a run?
Back at the casa I took a shower and just finished this lunch of leftover salmon salad and Red, Hot, Blues.
Currently working on a post for Friday and a few Designed To Fit Nutrition plans.
Enjoy your afternoon!

I once startled a moose on a run. Aside from that, a few porcupines (and a black bear once while hiking). I live in Maine, and we don’t have any scary snakes here.
KathEats says
I see deer a lot, but a moose would definitely scare me!!
Some would argue that a black snake is not scary, but I think so!!
Tonya says
HAHA! I’d prefer to run into a moose, a porcupine and a black bear rather than a snake! Yes, I’d probably pee my pants but i. can’t. do. SNAKES!
Aimee says
Do large branches that look like snakes count? Lol
KathEats says
Hahaha – if they scare you then yes!

I almost literally ran into a big ol’ buck once. He jumped out in front of me and I had to stop short.. I missed him by about a foot!
I typically run into turkeys on my runs. No bears and that’s perfectly fine with me!
KathEats says
yikes! I’ve never actually bumped into a deer but that would scare the heck out of me!
Chelsea says
Not while running but last night in an NYC park, I was turning the corner with my dog when a woman from the neighborhood turned back to tell me there was an aggressive (!) skunk and to turn around and go the other way. In Manhattan!
KathEats says
Oh gosh!! I wonder if it was rabid 🙁
Jenny says
I have seen a few snakes here in Iowa, but I have also seen a fox and almost ran over a turtle on one of my paths!
Linda @ the Fitty says
Yikesssssssssss! I’ve never come across a snake during a run or walk but I’ve come across a deep and that was pretty dope!
I can’t get over how pretty your glass triangular bowl is. :3
KathEats says
It’s one of my favorites!

Last summer I ran into a momma black bear and her two cubs eating off some trees on a back road. I had just moved to northern NH and totally panicked while trying (and failing) to remember what to do when you a see a bear. I speed walked away then flagged down a man driving past me and begged him to bring me home. The poor guy was in his boxers as he had just been dropping his girlfriend off at her house down the street..don’t think he expected a strange girl to jump in his car at 6am!
KathEats says
hahaha!! Wow that’s quite the story!
Tonya says
hahaha! “dropping off his girlfriend” SUUUUURE!

Lol this may sound silly, but I startled some sandhill cranes once on my bike and it was terrifying! They are huge birds, almost as tall as I am. There were two in the woods right off the road with their baby and I guess I got too close, they were suddenly flying right in my face, I don’t know how I didn’t crash!
KathEats says
Oh gosh!! Wings flapping and all : )
Molly says
Chicago! My neck of the woods. Have fun!
Also the craziest thing that I have see is a squirrel HOLDING and eating a chocolate chip cookie.

I love that r2d2 helmet! So cute.

On a run a few years ago, we got to the top of a long, steep hill and finally hit the flat road again. I looked up, saw a unicorn about a tenth of a mile ahead of us. My thoughts, “A Unicorn!! Wait unicorns don’t exist..” My running partner says, “Wow did you just see that huge coyote?” His long ear appeared to be a horn to me. I told her that I first saw it as a unicorn, and needless to say, all of my running group never lets me forget it.
KathEats says
Haha that’s so cute!

Can’t wait to hear about the travel plans and the big project! I live in Chicago if you need a brunch buddy 🙂
KathEats says
It’s a quick trip but I might!

My dog and turned a corner and came face to face with a javelina (wild boar). Those are animals you don’t want to mess with. I slowly turned around grabbed my dog close and slinked away around the corner then we were out of there.
He was more interested in the neighbors bush than us thankfully
KathEats says
Ahhhh!!
Tonya says
THESE STORIES IN THE COMMENTS ARE HILARIOUS!
Laura says
No crazy wildlife encounters but a few years ago while out for a run at night with my dog we ran into someone walking a large pet pig on a leash! I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn’t seeing things in the dark.
KathEats says
Haha awww!! That’s cute!

A coyote on a downtown street at 5:00 a.m., and then another in a residential neighborhood. The second time I had my rather small dog with me. She typically would go nuts barking but all she said was a small “woof” before I picked her up. Thankfully it was a young coyote, and we managed to get around each other on either sides of the street before it took off back to a creek bed and I ran up a very steep hill, still holding my rather small, but rather heavy dog!
KathEats says
I’ve never seen a coyote!

I almost STEPPED on a rattlesnake during a trail run in Colorado. I am absolutely petrified of snakes – this was one of the worst things to ever happen to me…
KathEats says
Ack!! I ran into one while hiking in the desert once, but it was far enough away that I wasn’t totally on it
Cheryl says
We have quite the assortment with biking, hiking and walking: skunk, fox, herons, turtles galore (including a huge snapping turtle), deer (including the white one we see regularly), turkeys, ponies, and lots of snakes… mostly black snakes but I have seen a rattle snake while hiking and almost ran over a copperhead this past fall on the tobacco trail.
KathEats says
That is quite the assortment!!
Erica says
I once ran into a badger!!! I started running after it because I was curious, but then it got defensive, did a 180, and bared its teeth at me. I gave it space after that. It was a little scary, but so exciting; I have yet to see another!
KathEats says
Geez!!
Katie says
I once had a deer literally run INTO me on a run. I have no idea where he came from because I was running on my school campus and there are no woods anywhere near there. Needless to say, we were both just a bit startled. My friends still make fun of me for that one!
KathEats says
Haha ahhhh!
Danielle says
I’ve thankfully never seen one, but our hiking trails have information on what to do if you run into a cougar. Gives me a chill every time I see the signs.

I moved to Australia a few years ago and was running along an unfamiliar trail when I looked up to see a group of kangaroos right in my path! The funny thing is they were all just standing there starring at me. Regardless, I freaked and ran in the other direction. They were huge!
KathEats says
*Wide eye emoji!*
DIANNE says
I love your blog. I can’t wait to read each thing that you post The food looks so good. The salmon salad, please post that recipe I do not remember seeing that one. The chips looks amazing also.
KathEats says
Recipe is coming!

Side note, my son has the smaller version of that same bike. We were looking into the one you have. It says that its suitable for kids up to 5 years old. My son was born within weeks of Mazen (will be 5 in the fall) and is in the 65-70th percentile for height right now (for comparison to Mazen). Do you think we would get enough use out of this bike (before he outgrows it)?
KathEats says
I think it depends on where and how often you use it! Mazen uses his every.single.day. to bike to school, to his dad’s house (which is blocks away), and with the neighborhood kids. If you do a lot of biking, I think even 6 months of use would pay for itself, but if you think your son is ready for a bike with pedals, I would just go ahead with that! Mazen is getting close.
