Every so often I get asked to review a new cookbook to hit the market. The following three are all really awesome! (Look for a review of Feeding Baby on Baby KERF!)
The Part Time Vegetarian (PTV) Smoothies and Juices
First up is my friend Tina’s book – The Part Time Vegetarian (PTV) Smoothies and Juices.
I’ve loved Tina’s blog for years and am really happy to share her book with you! It’s jam-packed with unique smoothie and juice recipes. Now most of you probably know how to make a smoothie. You probably have 2-3 smoothies that you rotate through the week. I have no idea how Tina thought up so many different recipe combos, but you won’t get tired of smoothies if you rotate through these! The book has over 140 recipes including all kinds of smoothie categories – from veggie-based to high protein to a whole chapter of fresh juice blends.
I had a pint of local raspberries that needed to be eaten quickly and made her Raspberries & Cream smoothie. I loved the in-your-face raspberry flavor and used a little Vega vanilla protein powder I got as a free sample to sneak in the vanilla.
I also made the Sweet Green Smoothie for breakfast one day – another winner that I otherwise might not have thought to combine: banana, strawberries, spinach, milk and orange juice.
The Single-Serving Cookie Cookbook
Blogger Kylie of Immaeatthat (love her blog name!) is a registered dietitian in training currently working on her internship. Her eBook, The Single-Serving Cookie Cookbook, is a health-minded collection of single-serving cookie recipes made from wholesome ingredients.
The concept of her book is GENIUS!! Who doesn’t want just a little dessert at night? And who has trouble resisting a giant cookie jar if you make too many? For just $7.99 you can download the book and have the recipes in your kitchen in minutes. In the book you’ll find recipes that are: gluten-free, peanut butter based, bean based, stuffed with frosting, cake batter twins, deep-dish, for marshmallow lovers, covered in sprinkles, made with tofu and more. Brilliant I tell you!
Kylie sent me the cookbook electronically in this little cookie jar – how cute is that!?!
I couldn’t wait to try one and dove right into this:
I made her Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream Sandwich.
This was so delicious, and I loved that it was no bake and super easy! The “ice cream” is actually just frozen banana!
I also just found butter extract at Whole Foods so I can make her favorite cake batter cookies soon!!
100 Days of Real Food
The last cookbook on today’s tour comes from another real foodie – Lisa of 100 Days of Real Food! Lisa’s blog is an inspiration to me, and her recipes are pure and wholesome. The cookbook (a 2.5 year project!) 100 Days Of Real Food: How We Did It, What We Learned, and 100 Easy, Wholesome Recipes Your Family Will Love is just what you’d expect and more. Lisa writes about her experience eating real food for 100 days, gives tons of tips for those hoping to eat better and of course includes a plethora of her recipes.
This is truly a handbook for eating real food with tips on grocery shopping, entertaining, lunchboxes, and great recipes.
I am not the most responsible at following a recipe, but I love a technique. Thus I was all over the concept of refried beans in the crockpot! I followed Lisa’s recipe, swapping out onion for celery, and absolutely loved the result!!
Refried beans win the prettiest food of the year award, right?!
I am sure these are way healthier than the refried beans you’d find at your local Mexican joint. Just as delicious too!
We ate them with chips for dipping!
Little fingers were a fan!
What’s your favorite cookbook du jour?

That single serving cookie cookbook looks AMAZING. I need to check that out!!
Maryea {happy healthy mama} says
I have the 100 Days of Real Food cookbook as well. Now I just need to try some of the recipes! haha The refined beans in the crockpot looks like a great one to start with!
Emily says
I’ve been using Lisa’s meal plans from 100 days of real food cookbook for the past few days and I love it! Such great recipes and so easy to make! Definitely one of my favorites at the moment!
Maureen says
These all look like great reads! Lee at FitFoodieFinds wrote a single serve dessert book this summer that knocked my socks off! You should check it out!
Kayla says
100 Days of Real Food is on my to-read list. I am enjoying Slow Cooker Revolution from America’s Test Kitchen. I’ve only tried one thing, but it was delicious!
Chelsea @ Designs on Dinner says
I love the idea of a single serving cookbook! Then I wouldn’t have to find people to pawn my desserts off on. 🙂
Barbara says
the one you should write!

That cookie cookbook will be perfect for my daughter who makes a batch of sweets and then leaves them around to dry out and then be thrown away.

Its targeted toward SNAP recipients, but has healthy and delicious meals that can be cooked by anyone. I’m enjoying it.

ok, this doesn’t really count as a “book,” but king arthur flour’s blog has been a go-to read of mine lately (as a budding bread maker). they really dig into the science of bread making and i love it!
Dana @ Fresh simple five says
The little cookie jar is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I love collecting cookbooks, but haven’t picked up anything new in awhile. I spotted one yesterday at Williams Sonoma that was all about using veggies from your own garden. A little off season now, but it looked amazing nonetheless.
Vanessa says
A single serving recipe book is pretty fantastic – I could get waaaay into that.
Anne says
I LOVE Small Batch Baking by Debby Nakos. Its similar to the “Single Serve” Cookie book, in that it only makes enough dessert to serve 2-3; but its cookies, cakes, pies,, breads etc. I go to this cookbook constantly!
I also love “Clean Food” by Terry Walters. Its a Seasonal guide to clean eating; its inspiring when you need to reduce your “squiggly line” 🙂
jill says
I use a lot of online recipes, but when I do use a book, it’s usually one of the Looneyspoons trio (Looneyspoons, Crazy Plates, and Eat, Shrink & Be Merry). I love that a number of their recipes call for the same ingredients, and their stuff is delicious.
Brooke says
You sure do a great job of “selling” these books! You’ve made me want to go out and get each one of them 🙂
Megan says
I actually recently bought Kylie’s Single-Serving Cookie book and made my first recipe last night: the chocolate caramel-stuffed pumpkin cookie. I doubled the recipe and made one for my husband too and we LOVED them! Seriously, one of the best cookies I’ve ever had. I can’t wait to try more!
April says
My favorite cookbook lately is Make the Bread, Buy the Butter. I’ve been learning about all sorts of foods I can make at home with whole ingredients, instead of buying the processed versions at the store!

I haven’t heard of that single serving cookie cookbook but I need that in my life! That is a genius concept and the cookie jar idea is adorable!

My favourite go to cookbook is French Food at Home by Laura Calder. Everything I’ve tried is delicious and makes a weeknight meal seem fancy.

i got kylie’s single serving cookie ebook and love it so far!

I need to get myself that smoothie and juice book.

Wish I had that cookie for dessert tonight!

The single serving cookie cookbook sounds like a winner

Our book club was just talking about who references cookbooks still, or do we just google recipes. Just bought the latest vitamix blender for J’s birthday last week, a monster industrial machine that she loves!! Will have to get her the PTV!!
Connie says
I love cookbooks, but I hardly ever use them anymore because it’s so easy to find good recipes online!
Sorry, but what does “I like a love technique” mean (in the intro to your refried beans)?
KathEats says
Just a typo. Fixed now!
Alyssa @ Healthy Weighs says
I’m actually really interested in the 100 days of real food book! I was reading about it back in February but have never actually gotten the book ????
Alyssa @ Healthy Weighs says
Sorry, tried to use an emoticon from my phone and it turned out to be a bunch of question marks!

My go to is Mastering The Art of French Cooking by Julia Childs. She was the first real food chef/cook I wanted to be like. However, it can be fattening. But oh so good. I do follow 100 Days of Real Food blog. I think that may be my next cookbook. But I love her site for lunches for kids, which makes me excited for what Maze will get when he starts school. I know you will be just as creative.
s/n: Have you seen some of the lunches on pinterest? Who has time to make some of those? LOL! I need a grandchild (not anytime soon at least 10 years) close so I can make their lunch every day like those ladies
KathEats says
Haha – I am already worried about packing lunches! Right now I just have to do snacks and it’s hard to keep things varied and healthy in snack form!
Alex @ Get Big, Go To Work says
I haven’t purchased any cookbooks in a while. I tend to buy it only to have it sit on my shelf for a while as I continue to proclaim that “I’ll use it tomorrow.” I actually love to scour blogs for recent recipes other bloggers have made. I definitely have a few favorite I keep going back too.
That PTV book looks fantastic though. I might have to pick that one up for all of the unique juice combos.
Robin says
I love the America’s Test Kitchen Healthy Family cookbook. I love that it includes techniques, as well as reviews of different kitchen tools and appliances, ingredients, etc. Right now it’s my favorite all-in-one!
Emily @ Life on Food says
I have so many cookbooks I want right now. What is three more to the list? Thanks for sharing!
Jeri says
Just thought about something as I looked at fruit in my freezer. How do you make smoothies that are just one serving? I have a regular blender and when I follow recipes that say 2 servings, it seems like 4 or 5. Do I need to invest in a nutribullet? or is there a way to ensure I don’t waste any with a regular kitchenaid blender?
Kelly says
How much liquid and other ingredients are you using? I make smoothies for 2 in the morning for me and my partner – I use 2 cups of almond milk, one banana, about 20 frozen strawberries, 2 tbsp of greek yogurt, 1 tbsp coconut oil, and 1-2 tsp of flax meal. That is plenty for both of us. I don’t think you need a new machine – maybe adjust how much liquid you’re using?
Jeri says
thanks. i was doing cup of almond milk and a cup of greek yogurt, banana, berries and 2-3 cups of spinach. i think I’ve been over doing it.
Kelly says
Hi Kath! I thought I left a comment on this post, but it must have not made it. I was wondering if you could explain the term “part-time vegetarian” as to how it relates to a ‘cookbook’ for smoothies?
I love the cookie jar USB! Adorable and very creative!
I still love (and miss!) Mama Pea’s cookbook! I refer to it all the time.
