I’ll have the #4 please: herring with jalapeno grit cherry honey salad.
Early lunch today because I’m joining Matt for a 1PM meeting. And a weird one at that!
Smoked Herring Salad
[herring are just like sardines – maybe even better!?] – made with carrots, celery, mayo, mustard and curry powder. I had intended to put this ON my salad, but I decided to keep them separate. Where are tortilla chips when you need them!
Spicy Grit Salad
Random mix of flavors – but they worked! Lettuce + arugula, dressed in olive oil and honey with lavender salt. Plus dried cherries, jalapenos, bleu cheese and pieces of congealed grits from the other night’s dinner!
This whole post – from shoot to photo uploading and editing to blogging took me just 10 minutes! I’m getting good at this job!
😉
Adios!!
Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
There is nothing like dried cherries in a salad, in my opinion. So insanely delicious! Now I’m craving jalepenos…
Wow – ten minutes! Impressive. My brother and husband were making fun of me last night for stealing their bowls of soup to photo for a post later this week. I am not nearly as fast yet; I think we are having to get used to cold food ’round here ; )
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
I am willing to try sardines one day, but herring? no thanks. I worked at a Nursing Home for a few years and Pickled Herring was a super popular snack — the look and smell was too much for me!
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
mmm, I’ve totally been on a jalapeno kick lately, so this salad sounds deeeelish!
Jumanah @ Healthy Living in the Middle East says
Yum! Love dried cherries but never tried them in a salad. Must try soon! Looks delicious!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Grat idea for using leftover grits! (Or polenta, which I happen to have 🙂 )
10 mins is downright amazing. Can your next “tip”-related post please be on how to blog more efficiently?
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I love sardines, but I have never tried smoked herring? Did you pick up the can of herring at Trader Joe’s?
KathEats says
Yup – TJ’s brand is the best!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
10 minutes, sheesh! I’m SUPER impressed! Can you send me some of your skillz? HA! You should do a blog post on how to blog most efficiently! (or wait, have you done that already? You probbbbably already have…)
Joanna says
I hate to rain on your parade, and congrats on the quick post, but that lunch just sounds gross. I think it’s “try it to believe it” kind of meal. You lost me at herring and then again with cherries with Jalapenos.
Candcae says
I was lost at “congealed grits.” I know they were just leftover grits but the “congealed” part is really unappetizing.
I’m a huge fan of herring, though, especially pickled herring on crackers!
KathEats says
Well that’s just too bad because it was a really tasty lunch
Matt says
Herring are freakin’ delicious… try it and believe it!
Elizabeth@The Sweet Life says
What a beautiful meal! I love the jalapeno/cherry combo.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Wow what timing!! That is certainly a mix I never would have thought of but it looks tasty, just like everything else you make! I’ve seen herring a few times (ever since you introduced me to the world of sardines!) and have been thinking about trying a can out to see if I like it. Do you mash them up just the same as you would with sardines?
Ann @ Day by Day says
I’m eating sardines for lunch right now! I bought a few packs at Whole Foods after reading about them on here. The “congealed grits” made me laugh. Maybe you weren’t trying to be funny, but that is the perfect description of the consistency of leftover grits!
britt will be fit says
I’m scared of trying herring…they look so ugly!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
Wow, you are a fast poster! It takes me like an hour :p
Jess (Sweet Potato) says
What a lovely lunch!
Danielle says
I had a bunch of cilantro that caught my eye when I opened the veggie drawer. I knew it was lonely, since it had already served its purpose in guacamole. I’m a cilantro fan (though I know it is a love it or hate it taste). I pulled some off and tossed in the spinach base of my salad… delicious.
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
Love the combo of flavors here. 🙂
Johanna B says
The salad with cherries and jalapenos looks wonderful. I’d have to leave out the grits though. Never did enjoy them and EVERYONE in New Orleans eats grits. I always felt left out.
megan @ blackberries for jam says
Herring reminds me of my grandfather, because he eats pickled herring on triscuits with onion and mustard! I have always been his guinea pig, as I am the only one in the family who will try anything. And it’s really good! I also had delicious herring at a Swedish bar in NYC. I may have to recreate your herring salad!
Stacy @ LoveDiscoveryGratitude says
Geez! The salads you’re making get better and better! I have a good dinner plan tonight! 🙂 🙂
dee says
the smoked herring salad sound and look delicious! I’m going to have to try it!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
10 minutes?! My goodness, I need another trip to the KERF school of speedy blogging 🙂
Kat @ Cupcake Kat says
Where do you get lavender salt from? It sounds delicious
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Faith makes it!….

🙂
KathEats says
Yup! Mine’s from SF farmer’s market
Maria says
How do you do it so quickly!? Please share your tips and tricks because it takes me forever.
Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
That is so fast! It takes me awhile…but that’s probably because I have the TV on in the background and get ridiculously distracted.
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
That sounds really interesting with the grits! I love your salads!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Super speedy!
Are you still using your Eye-Fi card? I *think* you were having problems with it recently… (?)
I just purchased one, and will be hooking it up this weekend. It seems like it could make a world of difference! I’m excited to try it. 🙂
~
KathEats says
Yeah, it works beautifully. I thought my computer troubles might be related, but really I think my wireless card is shot. I’m on a wired connection now (with an ugly cord showing from the carpet 🙁 ) and it’s working great
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Speed blogging! 🙂
Tracey says
Hee! I have those same little bowls, if they are from Pier 1. I use them to feed my cat. 🙂
And that is the best looking (and I’m sure best tasting) Combo meal I have ever seen!
Michelle | gold-hearted girl says
Haha, definitely would be strange if I came across that on a menu. 😉
Val @ Balancing Val says
Id take a KERF fast food meal anytime!!
The herring reminds me that we have home made lox waiting for us in school for Sundays breakfast!
Yum! 🙂
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
Yes, please post how you blog so quickly! I’m pretty sure it takes me an hour to do a post–sheesh!!
Jil @ Big City, Lil' Kitchen says
Speed posting!! Have a great meeting.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Nice–you’re a speed demon 🙂 That really is impressive, and your lunch does look amazing!!
Kayla (Little Miss Healthify) says
Not to mention the photos look amazing! you ARE good at this 😉

Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
That salad sounds strange–but it looks amazing!!
Emily says
Love the creativity of you and Matt’s lunches 🙂 Wish I was a faster blogging pro like you!
Baking 'n' Books says
Do you mean the meal is weird? Or the meeting? :)…seriously though.
What time do you wake up and eat breakfast in the a.m? Are you a early-to-bed, early-to-rise person?
Tammy says
I’d like to know what you use for fast blogging as well!!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
“This whole post – from shoot to photo uploading and editing to blogging took me just 10 minutes! I’m getting good at this job!”
WOW I AM IMPRESSED!!!!
You clearly are super fast! And makes me wish I had windows live writer (I think that’s what you said you use)..I have a MAC and running Ecto or Parallels to run WLW on a Mac is a major pain. But gosh, I want to be fast like you!!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i think i’d like the herring – i love sardines!
Danielle says
I love the idea of honey in a salad dressing. Do you have a recipe? For someone that can’t just “wing” it hahha.
Danielle
Matt says
Honey IS the dressing! We usually just drizzle olive oil and honey on our salads. Don’t forget a sprinkle of salt. I’m almost completely over salad dressings… except Annie’s Woodstock and Green Goddess (drool)
Danielle says
Thank you 🙂
Ashley says
congealed grits…LOL love it
Susan (Oliepants) says
I have been craving spicy like mad lately! I think you just gave me my dinner idea – I knew I had a can of sardines left in my pantry!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Excellent turn over speed from prep to upload! That’s what I’m working on: Faster updates. Definitely need to dedicate one of my computers to blogging; they get too bogged down with zillions of apps open.
Your salad looks great!! Love cherries on salad, I made one the other day with cherries, almonds, and cherry balsamic vinegar: http://www.j3nn.net/2011/03/08/how-very-cherry-cherry-almond-salad/
SO yummy!
Emma (Namaste Everyday) says
noooooo don’t tempt me!!! i recently developed an allergy to cherries!!! i miss them so 🙁
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Little canned fishies scare me. Kind of like tofu. I’ve already got it in my brain that I won’t like it. Your salad looks incredible though!
Lisa (bakebikeblog) says
LOVE LOVE LOVE your serving bowls!!
Alexa @ Simple Eats says
Yum, herring salad? I’d be game for trying that!
Lynda says
ok….ordered Naturally Nutty Cinnamon Vanilla Almond Butter, thanks to you, and am a LOVING it!!! Amazing, it’s my new crack! Had some on a brown rice-cake, yummy! Everyone order some now!!!
Thanks Kath, for all your great posts!
Maria says
I never thought to make a seafood salad with herring. Sounds delish!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
I love herring! So good! I mix mine with greek yogurt and mustard….yummmmmaaaay!
CathyK @ www.1970kikiproject.wordpress.com says
i will have to try herring as i love sardines!
haha, i have discovered that it matters not what i blog about, my posts each take about one hour, all the time. i would love to know your fastest time ever!!!
Angela (the diet book junkie) says
oh wow, your salads look gorgeous!!! i’ve never had herring or sardines before (except in Caesar dressing) but i’d definitely be up for it!
Christine (The Raw Project) says
Great salad pics, what a fun and crazy combo. Great post for 10 minutes.
Chelsea says
I just cant get up the guts yet to eat sardines or herring! Everytime I see you eat I get closer and closer to trying it. The salad looks delicious though!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Dang you have this posting thing down to a science! It still takes me an hour to get up one post! 😛
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
Dang Kath, that is fast!
What kind of editing did you do to your pictures? I thought they just looked perfect from the way your nice camera shoots them. And maybe they do?!
KathEats says
I use Adobe Lightroom
KathEats says
[And it makes a huuuuge difference!]
Hilary says
Definitely an unusual combo…one I’ve never seen before. Given that I’m not a fish person to begin with, don’t think I could bring myself to do smoked herring!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Wait you are actually a pro. It takes me approx. an hour to type up a post!
Slash what do grits taste like? I am hesitant to try them because the name is kind of scary-sounding, not going to lie:)
KathEats says
Have you had polenta? Just like that
Maryann (The Balanced Bean) says
Wow my posts take at least an hour and don’t look nearly as good, lol.
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
Herring~never tried that! I love any. And I truly mean, ANY kind of fish and I’m sure this one would be no different. 🙂
Kiran says
I had a taste of herring while visiting Amsterdam last year and absolutely love it 🙂
Julie @ Lettuce Choose Healthy says
10 minutes! that is fast .. It takes me like an hour!
Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day says
I love the flavors in your Grit Salad
Hannah says
I’m currently far more in love with herrings than sardines myself, but they’re much harder to find in Canberra!
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
I love mismatched meals and adding leftovers is just a bonus!
That being said, I find the word ‘congealed’ extremely unappetizing! haha
Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) says
Wow! 10 minutes. You are most definitely a blogging pro. 😉
I love the sound of your salad! I need to get on the herring boat. 😀
Cara Craves... says
Congealed grits makes your salad sounds sort of weird, but it looks great!
Congealed is just a weird word to me 🙂
Mary Frances says
I think everyone missed something… Ten minutes for T H I S post. I’m sure most of us know Kath spends alot of time creating her blog story. Even if she is not sitting at the computer working on a particular post, she does alot of research along with alot of thought and creativity. If I had to guess, Kath’s probably spends more time overall on her blog than some people spend each day on their full time jobs ( A N D that is seven days a week A N D holidays too ! ) Thanx Kath 🙂
Kathleen @ KatsHealthCorner says
I love your olive oil and honey mixture for dressing! It sounds divine! 😀
xoxo
Kathleen
Christin@purplebirdblog says
The congealed grits almost looked like croutons until I read what it really was! 🙂
