The alumni party was a blast!! I ate (and drank) just the right amount. It feels good – I need to savor this feeling.
The husband and I got there early and we walked around Lake Norman for about 40 minutes. Que romantico!
Posing on the bridge
I packed a bag of veggies and strawberries to munch on on the way up to help tide my hunger. I also packed an emergency LaraBar but never ended up needing it.
The food was absolutely delicious – but very fried! Most of the appetizers were egg roll-style too! I’m glad I was able to fill up on some veggies.
I had half of each of these: crab cake (right), shrimp cigar (front), lobster-mango egg roll (middle), goat cheese round (back).
Shrimp lolipop
I can’t really drink more than 1.5-2 glasses of wine without feeling icky all night and the next morning. One of my most effective strategies is to skip the first round of drinks. It’s SO much easier to postpone your drink than it is to watch everyone else continue drinking when yours is gone. So the whole first round I just say “I’m not quite ready to order” to the bartender to buy some time. Then I order a club soda, then when others are on round II and III, I get a glass of wine and savor it. It was perfect timing tonight!
Club Soda around 7:30 pm
And a glass of wine around 8
That I sipped for about 45 minutes –
More food!!
Goat cheese #2 (Shared this one, I think!)
Another lollipop and crab cake –
Another lollipop (these were so good!)
Cigar (shrimp, basil, jalopeno)
Lobster roll (shared this one)
Not the healthiest dinner, but I didn’t really overdo it either! GO ME!! We had planned to get salads afterwards if we were still hungry, but I ended up being pretty satisfied. Special events are always my biggest challenge, so anytime I get through one eating a moderate amount I try to remember how I feel afterwards (not stuffed and sickly) and recall that at the next event. Every time it gets a little easier.
I’m a little hungry now that we’re home after a long drive, but it’s 11:30 and I’d rather sleep then worry about a snack so I’m hitting the sack.

I like your strategy about drinking after, I’ll have to try that!
Mikie says
You’re obsessive. Can you not go out for a nice meal without taking a picture of everything you put in your mouth?
Jill says
That is the cutest dress! Looks like a fabulous time!
Kath – do you measure out how much spaghetti squash you eat? I ate half of one, calorie-wise I’m not concerned, but I feel STUFFED! Should I cut that amount done or does that seem right?
Erin says
That’s such a pretty, simple dress! You and the husband look great. Have a nice weekend!

Oh and ps: I just tried a kiwi with the skin on, and I loved the texture! I’ll definitely do that from now on.

Kath – its hilarious that I have the same strategy when I go out where everyone is drinking. I’ve never been a big drinker since too many close calls in my freshman year, just don’t enjoy getting drunk anymore! Unfortunately my friends still don’t understand the concept that yes I can come out and have a good time without getting plastered! Lets just say that club soda is a close friend of mine, with the occasional white-wine spritzer thrown in over the evening!
Glad you had a great time!

sorry to repeat what everyone else said – but you and the husband are so cute together. The food looked tasty and the both of you looked great.
Here’s a question for Kath and everyone – We’ll be going to a birthday dinner at a sushi buffet. What do you all eat when you go to these types of buffets? (they don’t only service sushi – it’s a lot of asian fare and everything else!).
I always find myself taking a little of everything – but it ends of being a huge plate. I usually don’t eat all of it. But, I feel icky afterwards. Any advice?
Oh, and the desserts are my downfall. It’s like my brain says no – but my hands are not listening and grabbing everything in sight! yikes!
Happy Saturday!

Hi Kath! You even managed to slip in some mango in that little app! I ate an odwalla bar yesterday before a fancy family dinner and LOVED it. Just like banana bread. A bit calorie dense but it held me over for hours.

Mikie ,
It’s a food blog. I wouldn’t bother taking the photos if I didn’t have a blog to post them!
Jill ,
Spaghetti squash is very filling – that’s why I love it! I haven’t had it in a while, so I’m not sure how much i normally eat. Just try to eyeball it and stop when you’re feeling full.
VTgirl ,
Thanks for your sweet comment 🙂
Suzanne ,
Just do the best you can to pace yourself and try to listen to your body. Fill up on as many fruits and veggies and get small portions of the good stuff – but don’t skip what you’re craving all together – just have a little. I’m the WORST person to ask for advice on dessert buffets though, as they are by far my #1 weakness and I still struggle to eat normally at them. It helps if you just have one bite of 2-3 things you like and give away the rest. One bite is easier to stop with than “half” or “a few bites.”
