I have done nothing by respond to emails and do other online work since I came home from Chicago! There’s just so much information to sort! But it’s all by choice, I suppose. Here’s our group photo from this weekend of the Quaker Team and us bloggers 🙂
Breakfast was a rockstar! 😎 I didn’t even start to get hungry until noon. On most days I start to get hungry around 11 and let it build up until noon but today it was delayed. I wasn’t that hungry when I got up this morning though, so maybe there are other factors involved.
On to lunch – Ham + Laughing Cow with Mustard and Romaine on Dakota Bread –
A fruit medley
Chobani
And to my horror – expired!! I’ve got one more from this batch too. I’m going to eat it tomorrow for breakfast. It looked and smelled fine, and usually there is a grace period of sorts on these dates. Had anything looked out of the ordinary I would’ve tossed it.
And half a Country Square. I brought this to crumble on the yogurt, but I ended up eating it for dessert instead.
Couldn’t have asked for a better (packed) lunch!
The poor husband was up at 3am this morning and is working until 8 tonight – when he has to immediately go to bed again! I hope I can see him for 10 minutes at least today 🙁
Back to the grind…
VeggieGirl says
Love the fruit medley and the Country Square!!
So sorry about the yogurt being expired – bummer 🙁
Good luck to Matt with his early schedule; and good luck to YOU with the rest of your day! 🙂
Stephanie says
Oh I love when sandwiches are made with the ends of bread loaves…that’s the best! Pretty good looking lunch Kath.
Amanda in Pittsburgh says
Your sandwich is making me hungry and I just ate! HAHAH! :o) AWESOME!
Halie says
When I saw that you were eating a Chobani I immediately thought “Are those still good?” thinking they would have expired by now! Bummer I thought correctly! I really hate when food expires, and I have a real phobia of food poisoning, but I usually will take my chances.
Your fruit looks yummers!
Sarah says
I agree – eat the yogourt! I think that yogourt in particular is one of the dairy products you can easily get away with eating after the expiry date – like my mother says “It’s not like it turns into toxic waste at midnight of the expiry date!”.
Milk on the other hand – is the one dairy product I WILL pour down the sink sometimes even a couple of days before the exp. date. I’ve had one too many bowls of cereal/cups of coffee ruined by that business…
Ellie says
For what it’s worth I usually pay no attention to yogurt expiration dates. I mean you can keep it for basically forever. I’ve been known to eat yogurt that I bought two months ago. I get the Wallaby yogurts and after like two months the only thing happens is they tend to get separated-y.
I’m very cautious about expiration dates for other things, but yogurt I think is pretty low maintenance.
Marianne says
Don’t worry about the date on your yogurt – it’s a “best before” date, which doesn’t mean it all goes to crap on that date. Plus, since it’s in single serving containers, it hasn’t been exposed to air/contaminanats that could cause it to go off faster.
Julia (Santa Barbara Dreaming) says
mmmm fruit medley. so fresh looking!
I really like the group photo from the weekend I love how everyone’s holding a canister of oats.
And I usually eat yogurt that’s “Expired” up to about a week after. 😉 I’ve never had any problems.
Runeatrepeat says
I agree with many others here on past expiration date yogurt. It already has (healthy) bacteria in it. I tell myself that the good bacteria will battle the bad and I can still eat it.
I want to try those Country Squares, but I have not seen them at my Whole Foods. Boo.
Mel says
I love the group photo, it’s a great souvenier.
I agree with everyone else about the yogurt, you’ll be fine. I’ve actaully seen some packs (I think it’s yoplait) that says it’s good so many days past the sell by date. 🙂
Biz says
Great picture with Stephanie!
Poor Matt!
Storage: Yogurt may be kept well covered in the refrigerator for seven to 10 days past the “sell-by” date. If it is kept longer, it will develop a stronger taste. Freezing yogurt is not recommended because of the variable results in texture.
Hope that helps!
jess says
is that your little lunch bag? It’s too cute! I always keep things a little after the sell by date- as long as it smells and looks fine… haha. have a great one!
Maggie says
Yeah, I think the expiration dates have a very large safety period built in. I wouldn’t worry 🙂
Your lunch looks delicious. Hope you get to spend some time with the husband today!!
Shelby says
Arg! I hate when things expire without you knowing!!! Sometimes it will be when I want to make a recipe and I pull it out to use it and it’s gross.
Your lunch bag is adorable btw!
Melissa says
I am getting more and more jealous of your weekend in CHicago! WHat a weekend to be there!
Have a great day Kath!
Grounded Fitness says
busy couple! Hope things slow down for you soon, but not TOO soon 😉

Kath,
I was just curious if you have changed your perspective on any of the Quaker products after going to this conference. I personally feel Quaker puts more processed crap and added sugars into their bars, cereals, and instant oatmeals than is really necessary, and I read on Leslie’s blog that there was an “intense conversation” about this among the bloggers at the conference. Were you one of the ones who discussed this? Would you mind telling us about their response? I am just curious.
Sarah
Sarah says
Oh, and PS my husband is super busy like that too recently, and I honestly just got done crying about it. It’s hard to blame your husband for being busy with a job they (a) love and (b) support you through school in (I’m in grad school too) but I keep thinking: I didn’t sign up to be single and stay at home alone and eat alone when I got married!
Steph says
yikes i have definitely eaten expired chobani before haha, but only by a little and it was fine. your fruit combo look great!
Amanda says
Yummy lunch! I had a ham and laughing cow sandwich too!! Do you not like tomato on your sandwiches or is it just easier to leave them out when you pack? I find they add SO much to my sandwich, I wrap my tomato slices in saran wrap separately 🙂
I’m also going through the trying to eat things before they expire thing. I live by myself and can’t pass up buy-one-get-one-free lunchmeat deals, but then I am racing to eat it before it goes bad!!
Have a great day – enjoy the alone time while it lasts, I guess!
Oh She Glows says
I learned in a nutrition course that yogurt is often good 2 WEEKS after the expiration date- how cool is that? Yay for health bacteria!
Obviously, if it looks or smells weird then toss it, but for the most part it will be fine to eat past the date.
I love the fruit medley today!
Mara says
There’s an old wives tale that says that when you get the end of the bread, you’ll have a son!
Rose says
I think I have the same lunch bag…. in red! Is it a Built?
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
Kath, I read one of Sarah’s comments about the oatmeal conference. I do agree that they do put some unnecessary sugars into their pre-individually packaged oatmeal packets, but not to their old-fashioned rolled oats. But chewy bars on the other hand, are not as “natural” Am I correct? So curious, please Enlighten us!

I understand an attachment to a lunch bag. I forgot mine (with my lunch inside) on the metro last week and I was SO depressed. I was totally looking forward to my lunch- greens with grilled chicken, half avocado, artichokes, italian dressing, with half a whole-wheat bagel, and the snacls for later- apple and cheese stick- and instead had to waste money to get a lunch not half as good.
Grrrrrrrrrrr
Moran says
What a great photo!
And I LOVE the new header!
Melissa (the other one) says
Yuck, poor Matt! 🙁 And I feel bad for myself b/c I have to get up at 5:30! I couldn’t imagine 3! But I have to get up and do something I hate (going to work) so I guess there are pros and cons either way! 🙂
yum, lunch looks delish! you’re giving me some great ideas of what to do with the pomegranate sitting on my counter!
rhodeygirl says
pretty lunch!!!
have a fab afternoon

Kath:
No worries the date on yogurt is the sell buy date for stores. It is consumable for 2 weeks after the fact.
Can you post more info on the bar you had with lunch?
Lisa says
Mara – when I was growing up, I was told that eating bread crusts would give me curly hair and the ability to whistle. Wonder bread, indeed.
ashley (sweet & natural) says
Pom seeds are everywhere! I’m going to have bite the bullet and go buy one now.
JC says
You could probably go a few solid weeks past the sell-by date, especially for something like yogurt which was invented to keep well.
Julie says
LMAO!!!! Curly hair and the ability to whistle! Too funny! I’ve got frizzy hair and the ability to whistle; maybe I got the burnt crusts. =)

Kath, regarding the study that the RD talked about the benefits of a 610 cal breakfast- did he site what study this was from by chance?
ModelBehavior says
no worries about the expired Chobani Kath, I ate one of mine SEVERAL weeks after the expiration date and it was just fine! Since you don’t open them untill you eat them I think they are ok, I would be much more cautious if it were a big container that had already been opened!

Kelley says
I try to eat 1800 calories a day, so if 610 of that is for breakfast, do you try to keep lunch and dinner each under 500? And then one snack for around 200? I find that really hard to do. But maybe doing that will jumpstart my plateau. Thanks for the insight.
sarah says
3 am to 8 pm is even worse than the day i just had (4 am and got home at 7). he should go into medicine 🙂
cathy dooley says
Hi Kath! I have a question, are you working right now that you are going to graduate school? I am starting in the spring and i don’t know if i should go part-time. Thanks!
HangryPants says
Great picture! Sorry about the yogurt. I bet it’s fine and would probably eat it if it’s not stinking up the fridge. 😀
Megan says
That fruit looks yummy! Love the group pic!
Kath says
Sarah,
My opinion didn’t really change, but I think I have a better understanding of WHY they put lots of stuff in some of their products: because there are people that like them that way. We bloggers told them LOTS of our opinions on what we’d like to see in upcoming products, including lots more natural ingredients and such. It was a two-way conversation – us learning, them listening.
And I’m not mad at the husband at all nor do I blame him! We just have to squeeze in time when it’s there. And I kinda like having the house to myself. It stays cleaner 😉
Amanda ,
I’m not a huge tomato eater, and they’re going out of season. They’re too much of a hassle to pack! But if I loved them, it would prob. be worth it.
seelee live,
I’m not sure which bars you’re talking about – I’d have to see the ingredients list. But the Simple Harvest line is awesome.
Fig ,
It’s an Honest Foods Country Square – more info here: http://www.honest-foods.com. They are good!
Oh She Glows,
Sorry, I’m just re-quoting him.
Kelley ,
I don’t think the 610 number is set in stone it’s the concept that’s important and it was probably just the average of the bigger breakfasts people ate. Just take the concept of bigger breakfast, smaller dinner and see where that takes you.
cathy dooley,
If you count 20+ hours a week of blogging and blog-related work, then yes, I’m working part-time 🙂
Kath
