Good morning to you!
I am having trouble with garlic/onions in restaurants. Could not brush my teeth enough last night and this morning is no different. Pregnancy super taste? Maybe… I gotta stick to more bland foods in the coming weeks. Baby just kicked me to say “I agree mom!”
Nothin’ like some oats to cleanse the palate!
I used some homemade Scottish oats patiently waiting in a Ball jar for me to bring back. Just steel cut oats that I sent through the food processor.
I cooked 1/3 a cup with 1/3 cup milk and 2/3 cup water, a whole small banana and chia seeds. Plus about 10 blackberries and 1/3 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end. Topped with homemade granola and a scoop of Maranatha AB.
Hot tea on a chilly, cloudy morning.

I hate that feeling of waking up after a meal out with garlicky breath…even after brushing- gah!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I hate when there’s no amount of teeth-brushing to get rid of that garlic taste. Hopefully your oatmeal did the trick! 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I love that the baby kicks! Haha he’s got some opinions!
Jenny says
Still can’t take much restaurant garlic after going out for Italian during my 2nd pregnancy (10 years ago!!!)
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Ugh, I hate that when you can’t brush your tongue hard enough to get that taste out. Red onions are the worst!
Angel7 says
Even when I am not pregnant, if I have too much garlic on say, pizza, it stays with me the whole night, and sometimes causes heartburn. Thankfully, for this pregnancy I have not had as much heartburn like I did with out first child!

Kath, I’m looking for your post that shows your porch. I thought it would be in home neat home? I want to show it to my husband!
And I made my oatmeal on the stove this morning (I usually do banana whipped but in the microwave) and it was such a treat for my Friday morning!
KathEats says
It’s on the side bar…. Courage kerf…. The porch
Mom says
I think Kath means “Cottage Kerf”
KathEats says
Yes thanks, phone auto correct!

I like “Courage Kerf.” Good motto for labor!
Catalina @ Cake with Love says
Your oatmeal always looks great, and even if I had breakfast I am getting hungry again!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Roasted garlic does that to me. I love it… but I hate it. 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
it’s chilly and cloudy here also… those oats look perfect for the conditions 🙂 hope that garlicky taste goes away!!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Funny what you can forget about a pregnancy until someone mentions it and it triggers a memory. I do remember having to opt for a more bland type of eating when I was pregnant…hard for someone who enjoys a lot of garlic, onions and spice!
Erin says
That’s funny. Everything tasted bland to me when I was pregnant so I added a lot more spice!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I can’t decide if garlic or raw onions are worse – I think raw onions usually win. Hate it!
KathEats says
I think onions are slightly worse…
Cait's Plate says
Oh blackberries in oats – how have I not tried that yet!?
I have the same problem with onions in restaurants. It’s horrible to wake up and STILL have it on your breath – despite all the gum I chew and the numerous times I brush my teeth. I find sometimes a cup of green tea helps a bit…but not enough!
Becca says
Absolutely love your color scheme this morning (especially the last picture)! One of my favorite KERF bowl/teacloth/mug coordinatings to date.
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Pregnancy was definitely a time of heightened senses and blander foods for me. I do not like garlic and onions (one of the few people I guess) and in pregnancy, if I smelled them or accidentally had food prepared with them, they were so intense!
Kasey says
Omg love that the baby kicked you and agreed!
I haven’t used steel cut oats in a while bc I tend to like the thickness and bulk that rolled oats turn into. Hmmm… May have to test it out tomorrow morn…
emily says
This is an odd thing to notice, but I just love how rounded most of your bowls are. Like the edges curve in instead of out? It somehow makes everything look even tastier.
KathEats says
🙂
Annette @FitnessPerks says
I LOVE that bowl!!! Polka dots are my fav 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I too just finished off a big bowl of delicious oats. Cleanse the palate and please the belly! 🙂
Chelsea @ Designs on Dinner says
What a great idea to run steel cut oats through a food processor for a faster cooking process! I can’t believe I never thought of that. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
jojo says
How do you manage to make your everyday breakfast different, healthy, and gorgeous looking?? 🙂
I hope you have a wonderful day!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
I didn’t know pregnancy did that to taste buds! I better be careful with those foods because I’m not ready to give them up after having children! 😛
Alicia says
Two tips for the garlicy/oniony taste. One, eat a coffee bean after you have a garlicky or oniony meal. There is some kind of chemical reaction between the two that cancels out the oniony garlicy flavor. Two, have you ever heard about how rubbing your hands on stainless steel will get the smell off of them? I have heard it works for the taste too. I might recommend taking a spoon and just rubbing it around in your mouth.
Caitlin says
What are some of your “go to” brands when buying foods?
KathEats says
In which categories? I generally stick to store brands + bulk bins for staples, Stonyfield and Siggi’s for yogurts. Store brands for cereals. Random assortment of nut butters depending on cravings. Trader Joe’s for sardines!
Caitlin says
Excellent recipe in the next post with those sardines!!
You perfectly answered my question- and good to know to use the bulk bins!
Do you have an oat brand that you prefer?
KathEats says
Oh good! I actually like quaker oats the best… They ate the doughiest, but I usually get mine from the bakery
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
I finally got around to trying cottage cheese in my oats for the first time yesterday! I had a repeat this morning, but I think I used too much… kinda gaggy. I’m not a fan of plain cottage cheese, but I didn’t mind them stirred in yesterday. I definitely like the protein boost! I’ve never tried Scottish oats before – sounds interesting!
Sara says
One day when I was pregnant my husband made me scrambled eggs for breakfast and put a little garlic in them. It made me feel so nautious because I couldn’t get the garlic taste out of my mouth it seemed like for days. It’s been 5 years and I am still not right with garlic!!!
Tiffany says
Do the homemade scottish oats cook up faster when they are pulverized vs. being in steel cut form? Thank you 🙂
KathEats says
Yes, minutes
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Sometimes, simple tastes are the best.
