As I’ve left for “work” every morning this week the weather has been beautiful, the air crisp and dewy yet warm, and the biking exhilarating. I’m so thankful to be able to bike to work! (Remind me of that come January..)
Yet each morning when I leave the house on my bike, nice and clean from a shower, I’m drenched in a nice layer of sweat within in minute. And it’s not even summer yet!
But sweating clean, lotiony, perfumed sweat is tolerable and nearly odorless after it dries. Had I not showered I would have felt so gross, but after 25 minutes of biking hills PLUS my shower – I just felt a bit drippy! I don’t mind clean sweat at all.
Matt and I were on fire preparing for our employee meeting, rushing around and all, and noon was here before we knew it. Everyone ordered sandwiches and we did introductions and discussed working at GH.
I ordered the Curried Tuna today – yummm!!
Great job on the sandwich making design team!
We put out a bunch of carrot sticks to have as a side. Two giant papers of these got eaten – I was impressed!
Day 4 of sandwiches and tomorrow I’d like a salad for lunch please!!
I also taste tested some wheatberry salad we have as a side item purchase option. It tasted like Whole Foods! It would be cool to make this in-house, but we also don’t have a means to boil wheatberries and this tasted great, so we might buy it as is.
Honey Whole Wheat was cracked open for employee tasting.
We’ve got oogles of paperwork to still do – W9’s and confidentiality agreements to sort galore!
Have a great one!!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
How exciting to have your team all ready to go! Starting a new job is tough but I always liked the orientation days, they were usually lots of fun!
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
This is reminding me I want to make a curried tofu salad for a sandwich this weekend 🙂
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Wow, you guys are busy! But oh so exciting that it is REALLY happening. Go you 🙂
I would love a sandwich for lunch, please. ha! 🙂
Amanda says
I know if I am planning on biking to work I skip my lotion that morning! Lotion seems to make me sweat more and seems to make the sweat way more visible. Also I keep a little thing of baby powder in my desk just in case
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i love sandwiches too but i definitely get sick of them after one every day! salads on the other hand…
Amy says
Wish I could bike to work (30 miles each way makes it more of a big workout) but too bad you didn’t install a small stall shower when you moved in! Worth its weight in gold!
Mary Frances says
Their bathroom appears large enough to fit one, maybe after the business turns that corner for the finances to be out of the ‘red’, they can install one.
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
So happy that you’re enjoying biking to work. I’ll have to live vicariously through you for now in that regard. You’re setting a great example for customers and employers, not to mention your many blog readers. Keep pedaling!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Yum yum, curried tuna is one of my favourite sandwich fillings! Sounds like a busy day – have a productive afternoon!
Marina says
Biking to work is awesome, and you’re right, after some drying, nothing smells 🙂
Love those sandwiches.
Are all those made there in the bakery?
Mary Frances says
If you wear Under Armour®, the sweat is wicked away from the body (keeping you cooler), it’s comfortable and is very fast drying. Additionally, if you are sweating all day (say in front of a monster sized bread oven after biking in 80 degree weather with 100 percent humidity) it could prevent possible rashes generated from clothes that remain moist all day.
Tammy says
Hey there! Just wanted to say that I’m loving your blog and the anticipation of your new business opening!! Bets of luck with the final details… I’ll be cheering you on from Ottawa Canada!! 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks!
delia says
Confidentiality agreements? Is that in regards to not giving away GH recipes or something?
KathEats says
Yup
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I need that loaf of honey whole wheat right now! It looks delicious!
Megan says
I love wheatberry salad! So chewy and filling.
I NEED to try GH bread. It all looks/sounds so good!
Rebecca says
With all those people in there, looks like a real live bakery!! 🙂
I hope this isn’t weird, but today I ate a sandwich for lunch and thought to myself “this would be better with some ONION”. But then I immediately thought of you — “Kath never eats onions on her sandwiches…what this really needs is good Great Harvest bread!” Haha, I feel strangely in tune with your taste buds!
Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) says
Oh have fun with W9s, conf agreements, and if you have any drug screen paperwork, or OSHA safety videos you have to do, hope those all go smoothly 🙂 Oy vey. Better you than me!
The wheatberry salad looks great and the design team did a great job on the sammies!
Katie says
I’m so jealous of all of that bread! I LOVE bread!! 🙂
Molly says
Really random question – any recommendations on deodorant? I’ve been trying natural brands and they are ok during the winter. I’m a bit nervous about my bike commute as the weather heats up.
KathEats says
I’ve been using Dove for years and love it. I hate the smell of so many deodorants and it works very well. I haven’t gotten into natural ones..
Olena says
Tom’s Apricot or Honeysuckle are da best! http://www.tomsofmaine.com/products
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Ohhhh… I love a good wheatberry salad. You job must be the coolest ever. 🙂
Do you guys have to follow a set “Great Harvest menu,” or are you allowed to come up with oyur own additions?
KathEats says
Nope – every store is different
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
That’s really neat. I just signed on a client 20 mins outside of Charlotte – I’m totally stopping by when we head to their HQ!!
KathEats says
Charlotte or Charlottesville?
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Just kidding… Wrong “C” town. Always getting the two mixed up! 🙁
Cara Craves... says
The inside of your place looks so great!
I could eat those sandwiches everyday!
Hope says
That sandwich sure does look yummy! The bread looks so fluffy too! Good luck with everything! It must feel so rewarding to have your own store and to be opening soon! 🙂
Chloe (South Beach Girl) says
I’m so so so ready for the warm weather to hit the Pacific Northwest but I have a feeling I might have to wait until July for that to happen! Until then I will live vicariously through you and your lovely bike commutes 🙂
Kaitlyn @ 7 Plates says
I love how you bike everywhere.. I wish I could be like that but our streets are too scary!
Kate @ NaturaStride says
Haha – I bike to work everyday as well. I’m one of those crazy people that loves sweating when I work out (the sweatier the better) but not when I arrive at work!! Today it was so hot/humid here (in Philly) and, even though I re-did my hair and applied more deodorant, I’ve been kind of self-conscious all day! Oh well… sucks to be my co-workers I guess.
PS – I love Matt’s hat(s). Where does he get ’em? I need to get one for my man!
KathEats says
I have no idea! Some random shop 🙂
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
And once again your sandwich looks perfect (I love tuna) but I can understand craving a salad!
At the Great Harvest store that used to be open near me, that Honey Wheat bread was a favorite of mine…toasted with a glob of good old butter of course 🙂
Aimee says
Couldn’t you get a hot plate for the wheatberries? If everything else is raw and/or able to be prepped in-house, it seems worth a shot to DIY!
Mary Frances says
Could it be done in a crock pot?
Johanna B says
I am so excited about your opening coming up so soon and I’m not even close enough to be there. I can only imagine what it must be like for your bloggie friends living near enough to show up. I’ll toast to your upcoming successes. Congrats!
Baking 'n' Books says
How many employees do you have? Are they close to your guys age?
And – was an appetite for bread a neccessity prior to employment? 🙂

JenATX says
curry tuna-great idea! tuna salad always sounds so delicious to me after a workout because of the protein + coldness
Jill says
Curried Tuna – yum! I make your recipe all the time 🙂
FYI – “Go with the Grain” is doing a Bread Art Project to raise money and awareness about eating whole grains. I’m not affiliated with it at all – an art friend/teacher just sent me the link: (breadartproject.com) and I thought it was neat-o!
Kath says
Wow!!! Love the bread!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
Everything looks delicious! I hope your team appreciates it 🙂
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I get so sweaty when I ride my bike- pretty embarrassing when I ride it to work 🙂
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
The curried tuna reminds me of a curry chicken salad with Greek yogurt that I make, which is really good!
Annie says
I stopped in the Denver area Great Harvest today for the first time. Rachel says “Hi!”
The bread is delicious! 🙂
KathEats says
Oh fun!! HI to Rachel!!
Susan (Oliepants) says
Your sandwich makes me want to make a sardine sandwich this evening! Yum!
Allie says
I know exactly what you mean by a ‘clean sweat’ LOL! Umm I would really LOVE some curried tuna! YUM!
Rachel @ The Avid Appetite says
I have a long walk to work in the morning and am somehow always a sweaty beast by the time I arrive. I don’t like it one bit – clean or not! In fact, I almost prefer dirty sweat because it seems like you are supposed to be sweating…but when I’m clean? No thanks! 🙂
Nancy-The Wife of a Dairyman says
Wow! up and almost running! How very exciting! So glad you still have time to blog all about it:)
Lisa @ Healthful Sense says
I don’t know how you do it???? Great job though. You guys are meant to do this.
Maria says
My husband bikes to work every morning (that we don’t have snow). He is blessed in that he doesn’t really sweat when he works out and when he does, he doesn’t smell. He doesn’t even wear deodorant! I, on the other hand, would definitely smell if I didn’t wear deodorant. 😉
Sarah says
I am driving through Charlottesville during my move to NY on June 7th- if you guys are open by then I will definitely be stopping by! Everything looks awesome.
KathEats says
We’ll be open!! Come visit!
The Healthy Engineer says
Curried tuna sounds so interesting! I love tuna sandwiches but the taste of mayo really gets to me. I don’t know, I just hate the egginess..bleh.
Are you planning to sell sourdough bread? As someone who adores anything San Francisco, I’ve always loved it.
You’re so lucky that it’s hot enough to sweat…it’s cold in CA!
Johanna B says
I replace the mayo in recipes like curried tuna with plain greek yogurt. Creamy – not eggy and a little tart. Yum.
KathEats says
We might do hard-crusted breads eventually, but not at first. They’re not the signature GH style
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
You know what would be a cool side, too? Carrot fries! Or kale chips!!
KathEats says
Kale chips! They’re probably too labor intensive, but maybe!
Jordan says
I discovered a Great Harvest in Denver and am SO excited! 🙂 Glad to see things are off to a good start for you guys!
Lisa (bakebikeblog) says
I love how creative your sanwiches are!!!
Cait's Plate says
Look at all those people in there! That’s SO exciting!!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
I can’t believe how fast everything has come together! It’s so awesome!
Jeni says
I know it’s a LOT, okay a TON of work, but you make opening a GH look easy!
KathEats says
🙂 It most definitely is not!
Molly @ RDexposed says
The bakery is looking great!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
It looks like everything is running super smoothly for you! You and Matt make and excellent team and there is no doubt that you will be VERY successful!
Nicole (soundztastee) says
How exciting! Things are coming together so quickly now 🙂
Carlene @ Carlene's Figments says
Congrats on living the foodie dream with the restaurant! There’s a curried chicken sandwich I adore in a coffee house up 81 from you.
Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats says
I wish all Great Harvest’s had the same sandwiches!! T.T The only vegetarian option the Missoula one has is hummus. =( Some of us don’t like hummus.. Did you guys get to think up your own sandwich options?
KathEats says
Yes, we create them ourselves
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
YUMMY!
Khushboo says
Will the bakery have salads on the menu as well? All those sandwich fillers would be amazing salad toppers!
KathEats says
In time – yes!
Hannah says
You have employees! WHEE!
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
Ahh – meetings?, W9s, confidentiality – you’re so close!! That tuna sounds amazing, too. Yum!
