While I was working hard, someone was packing hard!
And made me laugh as I noted the contents:
Perhaps art is a form of procrastination of more packing? 😉
Matt had the day off and got a lot of packing done. And GOOD NEWS on the house – inspection seems to be wrapping up and while we’re out another thou, we’re just happy nothing major kept us from this sale. Also good news on our Great Harvest bakery location – one step closer to signing on the dotted line!
I came home from work ready to eat off my arm. The bars I had packed just weren’t appealing so I held out for a snack: vanilla soy milk with raw oats and a little granola and a chopped date!! It was on my mind the whole car ride home.
I love vanilla soy milk for its taste. I like to alternate between organic cow’s and vanilla soy for variety’s sake. I like almond milk OK and loved the new coconut milk, but I like to use milk as a protein source and both were completely lacking. Might as well use water!
Recognize this bowl!?! This is my latest article for Breathe Magazine! Really hard to believe I am a published photographer (and writer!)
I was in a tizzy upon arriving home. More than anything else, I WANTED to go workout!! I wanted to be out in the hot, summer weather (high of 100* today here but with perfect humidity!). But I had ton of stuff to do at home! Soon enough, though, I was able to dig myself out of the moving to-do list and went to the gym.
15 minutes of biking, 26 minutes of ellipticalling with Real Simple, 10 minutes of weights, 2 long planks, 15 minutes of biking. It was just what the therapist ordered!
While I was gone, Matt was assembling a dinner I had envisioned from our pantry:
Soba noodles (which I love but they are SO expensive!) topped with sautéed baby bok choy, mushrooms and canned salmon. I *think* he used Worcestershire, red pepper flakes, garlic gold and ginger as seasonings.
The shrooms were my favorite part!! They were huge and meaty.
I got these chopstix at World Market ages ago:
Sipping on my last Herbal Water! The most refreshing drink in town.
Matt just shoved a piece of dark chocolate in my mouth. I swear!!!!
Off to pack. And read. And sleep!
Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks says
Matt’s illustrations are beyond cute. What a great way to add a little fun to the yuckiness that is packing!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says

Heather (Heather's Dish) says
poor Kath! so sad that you *had* to eat chocolate! 🙂 love the packing boxes!
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
Note to self: Cartoons on boxes make packing MUCH more enjoyable.
Now where do I find someone to shove chocolate in MY mouth? 😉
Nienke at Revel says
I LOVE the drawings! And you can never ever have too many bowls – EVER. Although, my husband seems to disagree, as he threw out 2 of them last week….
Good luck finishing up with the packing 🙂
claire says
Matt’s artwork is seriously amazing…and entertaining…too fun! My man forces me to eat chocolate too..
Krystina says
I love soba noodles but can never buy them because I can’t justify spending $5 on noodles. Congrats on being published!
Dorry says
I love Matt’s drawings! So funny. Your dinner looks so yummy. Congrats on the Breathe article – SO cool!!
Dee says
Oh my gosh! Congrats on being published!
ps. I loved the commentary on the boxes! so cute!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Congratulations on the article and the photo! I have artists all over my little family that would rather draw than write! Your dinner looks delicious!
Erin says
I love eating with chopsticks. I have a drawer full of the metal ones that are REALLY difficult to use–I brought them back from my year in Korea–and drive my roommate crazy by insisting we both use them when we eat Asian food. 😀
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
haha love those box pixtures 🙂
And what a tasty dinner! How do you find that water though? Sure has some interesting ‘flavours’ in it?!
Kath says
It was sent for me to review a while back. I bet you could find it in specialty stores.
Ashley J says
I just picked some up at World Market the other day… love that store!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says

Laura @ youngDCliving says
Haha, so cute! Matt is a really great artist, I’m super impressed. Those drawings will also make it a heck of a lot more fun (and easy) to unpack 🙂
Kaz says
Matt’s doodles are adorable! How clever! 😀
Ashley@thehungryscholar says
I thought you moved already. Ah, packing and unpacking blends together for me. Anyway Matt seems to be extra helpful!
And chocolate is a must when packing!
Simply Life says
That’s so fun to be in the magazine!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
congrats on the breathe article – and on getting so much done! fingers crossed on the house inspection and great harvest location too.
sb says
Those are some damn cute box drawings.
However… as someone who has moved about a billion times, I have to say that labeling only on box tops is not the best plan. Once boxes are stacked, you can’t see what’s in them without un-stacking.
If you put labels on at least 2 sides of every box, you will be happy that you did. Trust me. 😉
Veggielady4life says
That’s wonderful about your article in Breathe. I read it, and I think it’s great. I will definitely try adding cottage cheese and pumpkin (once stores restock it!!). I have recently started making spinach smoothies with oats and milk, but those other ingredients will really help! I also tried the banana soft serve that I’ve seen everywhere online, and I loved that, too. Food blogs are such a wonderful way to find new ideas. I love them! And I really love yours! Good luck packing!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Very cool about the photo!!!
I love soba noodles too…they’re more chewy to me, or something.
Callie says
Haha. Loved the drawings. They make packing seem way less boring.
Congrats on getting published. 🙂
kate says
You are so far into the moving process! Ive been so out of touch. I love your packing descriptions.

lauri Watson says
Ha! LOVE matt’s artwork! Too funny! So excited for you guys!!!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I love that you write on your boxes! For my architecture stuff I just write Archi-TORTURE. Everyone who moves it laughs 🙂
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
You have to enjoy the fun stuff with packing even if it is the little pictures.
I love soba noodles too and found that buying them at ethnic markets make them much more affordable.
Therese says
That’s so funny about Matt’s packing, my boyfriend packs the same way! All of my boxes have funny sayings all over them! Ha!
Priyanka says
You can get Organic, whole wheat Soba noodles for killer prices at Asian specialty stores. I got a big bunch and I think I am good for the next three years. All those drawings are too funny!
Hannah says
That granola + date + milk combination sounds so refreshing. And *laughs*, your artist husband! Are their any talents he doesn’t have? 😀
Hannah says
OH DEAR HEAVENS *there*, not *their*. I cannot believe I just made that mistake. I’m going to go cry now.
Chelsey says

Your hubby is QUITE the artist! Very cute. Do you have some of his ‘art work’ framed?
Kath says
Yep 🙂
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
CUTE pictures! And there are much worse things than having chocolate shoved in your mouth haha
Kerri says
I love the packing illustrations!
A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) says
Go Kath Go! Those boxes will be a lot more fun to open with those little drawings. 🙂 I just did a post and included your site. I thought it would be proper blog etiquette to let you know. 😉
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
Those drawings made me smile :-). The last time we moved it was a cross-town move, so nothing was really labeled, we had plastic totes we moved back and forth. It was definitely different from when we moved cross-state!
Wei-Wei says
Hahaha I love the drawings on the boxes! I’m so jealous – Matt seems like almost the perfect hubby 😉 Congrats on the article! Are you considering writing a book someday? 😉 I hope you will 😀
Wei-Wei

I hope to someday!

I have a feeling you’ll be on the cover of Breathe magazine someday : )
Kath says
Now that would be fun! they are HQ in Charlottesville so perhaps that wouldn’t be that hard to do!
Ashley says
Loooove soba noodles too!! That bowl of shrooms looks amazing. Whenever we have to pack up to move we don’t even come close to having time to write funny things on boxes, lol…you guys are way ahead of the game =) You’ll get a good laugh unpacking those when you take them out from storage!
Camille says
Sounds like everything is just great news right now!
I’m so happy for you guys!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Haha, love the box labelling!! My family feel like Matt does about bowls (HOW many do we have!?) about all my plates 😀

Lele says
You two are so freakin’ cute. I love the pictures on the boxes, and the fact that you are force-fed chocolate by your beloved.
Emily says
So many things to note…I am moving too, sadly our boxes are not as amusing. You can never have too many bowls and coffee mugs. I love you have so many and they are quite adorable. Thank Britney for the yummy hummus – made some last night and it was delicious.
Marissa says
Aww, Matt’s drawings are so cute! You really got a great guy, Kath. :] We had mushrooms last night, too! They were so delicious; how can a plant taste so meaty and juicy?
Laura says
Loving the artwork!! espescially the little Buddha picture!
i am absolutely TERRIBLE when it comes to eating with chopsticks…..a normal 10 minute dinner could take me about 10 hours!!!!
xx
Lisa says
Congrats on getting published again, this time with that beautiful photo. I know you’ve written a lot of articles, but have you written many for magazines?
