Cherry season is short but sweet. Just like Irish Soda Bread in March or all the eggnog flavored things in December, I think the fact that you can’t really eat cherries year round makes me like them even more. They are one of my favorite fruits.
I was excited to show Mazen how to eat one now that I feel he’s old enough to understand that there’s a pit to spit out. One would assume that any food that involves permission to spit would be right up his ally! So I excitedly bought a bag of cherries a few weeks ago, and had Mazen watch me as I demonstrated eating the cherry off the stem and then spitting out the pit.
His response:
“That’s disgusting Mommy.”
HA!!
So I had a lot of cherries to use up that week. I turned this into a dough boy smoothie a.k.a. blended overnight oats with some chocolate protein powder I had on hand from Arbonne.
Don’t forget to take the pits out first! I just smashed each cherry with a knife and the pits came right out. Watch for splatters on your clothes! No fancy cherry pitter necessary, although if you have one I’m sure you may be much more efficient : )
Put the ingredients in the blender, mix, and chill overnight. The oats will soak up the liquid and give the smoothie a thicker, doughy texture.
In the morning, blend until smooth and enjoy in a bowl with a drizzle of drippy peanut butter and a dusting of coconut.

Looks and sounds amazing! That’s hilarious that Mazen thinks spitting out the pit is disgusting. 😉 He’s such a character and so cute!

This looks awesome! I actually like to use a sturdy straw to pop out my cherry pits. I call it the poor man’s cherry pitter!

Nice!
Rachel says
Oh my, that looks good! I can’t wait for cherry season here in New Zealand!
Mel says
Where’s the chocolate?
KathEats says
In the protein powder!

Have you ever made it without the yogurt (or have any substitution suggestions)? I don’t typically buy it (I can’t have dairy) and the non-dairy ones tend to be a bit pricey.
KathEats says
Yes I think it would work the same. Just make the overnight oats as you normally would without dairy

Kelsey-I’ve recently gone lactose free, and I can still eat Greek yogurt. I would sub regular yogurt for Greek yogurt…if you can stomach it (pun intended)! 🙂
Sarah says
Do you give Mazen smoothies with protein powder? I ask this not judgmentally, but out of curiosity. I used to always split smoothies with my toddler son, and then when I started using protein, I made them separately…but now that I really think about it, I’m not sure why! I think in my head a protein supplement was just a “grown-up” thing, and I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to add it to something he was eating by himself…but I’m not sure if I need to go out of my way to prevent him from eating it either. I use Naked whey, so it is just straight up whey protein.
KathEats says
Yes I do.

I shoved a bunch of oatmeal into my smoothie this morning and thought of you! (Sadly the smoothie turned grey)
KathEats says
haha!! Not the most photogenic, eh?

Ha — we’ve tried unsuccessfully to get out son to spit out watermelon seeds this summer. He actually doesn’t know how to spit. How do you teach that?
KathEats says
Haha – not sure you want to! For the longest time that was Mazen’s temper tantrum behavior. Spit everywhere! I think he will probably just learn naturally?
