Thank you so much for all of your comments, tweets, Instagram comments and emails. It means so much to me and also to my family and friends who read the blog.
Gram loved receiving mail, and we exchanged letters regularly. I have all of her cards, many of which she painted herself, tucked in a box. I re-read her final note this morning. I had sent her an article on doll houses (this one from Country Living) telling her I recognized the Converse from her collection. She confirmed – her dollhouse was a Converse. She was also so excited to hear about our new house, and ended the letter by telling me not to exercise too much : )
See the Converse doll house in the top left of this photo:
I did exercise too much over the weekend – I had a soccer game on Sunday and felt obligated to go as captain of the team. I subbed out a lot though, so I didn’t play too hard. My legs actually felt better after the game than before. I think I worked out the soreness. Yesterday I got a much-needed massage and am taking today off as well to rest one more day.
My weekend was full of highs and lows – a big high from the race and then the low when my mom called me later that day with the news of Gram’s passing. Sunday I attended a very beautiful but intense funeral for my friend’s mother, who died unexpectedly. It was a weekend of many tears.
But Sunday ended on a sweet note when Ellen brought over Duck Donuts, our new DIY donut shop that traveled west from the Outer Banks to open a Cville location. The chocolate coconut and lemon were my favorites!
I started the week with pancakes for breakfast, a big salad with lots of roasted veggies and leftover jerk chicken for lunch and slow cooker Cook Smarts beef stew for dinner. Plus delicious chips with hummus and a glass of wine with my new friend Leigh.
This morning we had oatmeal – whipped banana style with flax and an egg stirred in. I’m into adding a bit more protein, and love using something real food like an egg. Peanut butter on top!
xoxo

So sorry to hear about your grandmother. She was one of my favorite “characters” on your blog and she always seemed like so much fun!

I always looked forward to receiving cards from my maternal grandparents because they would include long letters! I still have a few, but wished that I saved more. Letter-writing is not very common these days, but these moments make me hope that it makes a come-back!

I love that your grandmother told you not to exercise too much. That is the perfect thing for a grandmother to say. I’m sorry you had such a tough weekend.

I’m sorry for your loss and touched by your beautiful posts about your grandparents.
On another note, I wonder if you will share your technique for adding egg to your oatmeal? I tried it recently and I think my ratios were off, or perhaps rolled oats work while quick oats do not…
KathEats says
I wait until the oatmeal is almost cooked and then crack the egg in and stir a lot of it gets really incorporated in. Occasionally you’ll see an egg white in there, but it gets pretty well mixed in.

Your tribute was beautiful, heartfelt and full of love. If only we could love and be loved as much as your family did with your Gram.

It’s so sweet to hear that you two exchanged letters! I wish you had told us more about it here, it would have been interesting to read about.

I’m really loving the photos you’re sharing of your grandmothers collectables, LOVE that. Makes me think I should start doing some of that myself for my future grandchildren.
And I’m totally drooling over those donuts, they look amazing.

So sorry for your loss, Kath. I know from reading over the years that she was very dear to you and a very talented and gracious woman!

Oh wow, what a tough weekend for you and your loved ones. I am so sorry. Sending love to your friend whose mother died unexpectedly. <3 I feel like this was a weekend of tragedies (one pregnant woman in my community was stabbed and literally had her baby stolen from her body in a really horrific event). I'll definitely be including your family and your friend's family in my thoughts and prayers. <3
KathEats says
Oh my gosh how horrific

Can I just tell you how much I appreciate you being real on the blog & sharing your “ups & downs”? I know some things are meant to be kept private, however the fact you can share real life things just makes the blog so much more appealing to read. I guess that’s why I’ve been reading since the beginning! I hope you have a nice week <3
