Because you have to find fun in the little things…
[Matt really did push me on that cart across our parking lot – we really did need a weight for the cardboard so it didn’t fly off!!]
Every time I go to the bakery to work I feel like I accomplish so much. I love doing manual labor. It’s so rewarding!
When I got to the bakery, I found Karen and her friend Tracy and we went on a walk to admire North Downtown houses before I got started working with Matt. It was chilly out, but so nice! [Karen says hello and she’s been feeling good this week and helped out all day unpacking!]
Once back, I tackled unpacking tons of boxes of smallwares. I found measuring cups and spatulas and knives and all kinds of little things our equipment broker had sent!
Plus tubs galore, which I organized
And where there were 100 boxes now there are just cleaning supplies!
Matt assembled chairs
And spent all day on these shelves
And did refrigerator stuff..
Love our floors!!!
Also in LOVE with our recycled glass counters!!
This happens tomorrow:
My lunch was SO filling and we worked until about 6 when Matt proclaimed he was starving. So I biked home while we drove and we rendezvoused at home.
Tonight we were supposed to have salmon cakes, but we gave ourselves the night off and went out for pizza instead. My mom told me when I was in my internship: “There are times when eating out makes sense.” I’d say this week is busy enough to count. So we went out guilt free!
Dusted off, lipsticked and blazered and you’d never know how dirty I really was!
We got the amazing hummus plate to share for a ‘salad’ course
I had two amazing fluffy grilled pitas and forkfulls of veggies and olives
And to share – the special pesto pizza with portabellas, artichokes, tomatoes, goat cheese, pesto and mozzarella
Had two of those bad boys – YUM!!!
Didn’t I promise myself some R&R tonight? Gossip Girl awaits!!!
Morgan @ moments of mmm says
I WANT SOME OF THAT PIZZA!! Yummmm
Do you and Matt have a lot of other help getting the bakery up and running? Or is it just basically you two and some professionals here and there?
Either way, you two are amazing!
KathEats says
Well our contractor has done all the hard work – but no, we don’t have help cleaning and putting it together – except for Karen!
Katie says
It’s true – you DO have to find fun in the little things. Otherwise life can get too overwhelming! As always, the bakery is coming along beautifully! And I love the chairs you picked out!
And it’s always good news to hear when Karen is doing well! 🙂
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Going out to eat is DEFINITELY worth it when cooking just adds stress to your life. I love cooking but I never want it to be a chore or something I don’t look forward to. Life is stressful enough – do what you enjoy!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
What a productive day!! Love the bakery 🙂
Enjoy your relaxing evening!
Mom says
Love all the equipment.

Holly @ The Runny Egg says
Love the pic of you on the cardboard — makes me think of when I worked for Pier 1 — truck day was the best! We’d make cardboard sleds, forts, etc. It was hilarious.
That pizza looks incredible!
Kat @ Cupcake Kat says
Such a great dinner! It definately looks like it was a good choice
Your bakery is going to look amazing! I can’t wait
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I am in love with the glass recycled counter tops as well!
Manual labor.. quite possibly a favorite of mine. When the job is done.. it is so awesome to look at it and say.. “I owned that”
Even if it something small and (not so) simple.
Like furniture from IKEA! 🙂
Allie says
Ah, manual labor IS very rewarding because you can see the results from all of your hard work, love it 🙂
The pesto pizza looks great!
Eileen says
The bakery is looking great! The countertops are beautiful!
Your site looks quite a bit bigger than the two I’ve visited — does the size vary a lot from one location to another? One of ours is just a stand at an indoor farmer’s market, so maybe that doesn’t really count, but the other one doesn’t seem as roomy, either.
KathEats says
It is bigger – we couldn’t downsize so we were “forced” to go with the bigger option. We’re paying more (bad) but we have space (good)
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Your cardboard surfing looks like fun! It sounds like you guys had a super productive day, and that pizza was very well deserved. Enjoy Gossip Girl tonight! 🙂
Jess says
My mom says the same thing to me—sometimes I need to be reminded! That pizza looks like a great way to finish off such a packed day!

Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Hooray for bakery progress! It looks soooo roomy. I think having space for tables inside is a brilliant idea. I’ve never seen that in a GH before.
Glad to hear Karen is doing well, too.

Kate says
Wow, you guys got a lot done around the bakery! It looks great 🙂
I love manual labour too – it is so rewarding.
Baking 'n' Books says
Kath, you look so good in just a t-shirt and dressed up!!
Manual labor. Yep. I need that. Honestly, I’d rather be working back at being a Barista serving coffee, busing tables, cleaning dishes, stocking shelves – heck, mopping floors – anything just to keep life moving and not be stuck in my mind.
CVille does pizza well! Is it a local joint you go to?
Emily says
What a day! Your blazer is SO cute- I need one of those!
Molly says
Those times make the best memories!

Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says

Kalyn says
Cute blazer! Cute cardboard picture! And yummy looking food!
I liked your mom’s quote; I often feel guilty about going out to eat- both about the money and the fact that I feel I eat healthier if I eat at home. It was a nice little reminder that there’s no reason to feel guilt if I eat out on occasion (:
Lenna says
You look like a real bussines woman in that blazer, like it:)
lynn @ the actor's diet says
it’s a good thing you like being physical labor!!!!

Kath,
I just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are to me. I have been reading your blog for over 2 years now and am just finishing up my third year of school studying dietetics. I LOVE the fact that you are opening up a bakery with your hubby and look forward to seeing your success grow even more! I think you are such a beautiful person inside and out. Thanks for being my inspiration 🙂

Andra says
Reading your blog is like reading a story…at the end of some chapters you wake up being attached to some characters 🙂 You seem to be an amazing person, I hope people around you realize that! And all the lovely recipes you put together…you should see how happy you make me in the morning when I open my reader and see new posts are waiting to be read 🙂
Good luck with the bakery! I’m sure it will be a great success 🙂 after all, places are great just because of the people who run them! The only thing I truly regret is finding myself at the other end of the world and not being able to taste some of the amazing things you’ll be making there!
KathEats says
Thanks Andra 🙂
Paige @Running Around Normal says
Ha! Love the cardboard surfing 😛
Wow the progress is really outstanding! I wish I loved manual labor… hehe

Thanks, Kath! It’s so hard to find jeans with perfect fading like that. Yours are so cute!!! Have a great day! 🙂

I can’t believe how well the place is coming together – I’m seriously in awe of what you and Matt are doing – such a HUGE deal and so exciting!!
I had pizza last night too but it wasn’t nearly as good as yours looks! Glad you enjoyed a night out after all your hard work during the day.
Jenn says
We love walking to Fry Spring Station for pizza 🙂 Maybe we can meet up sometime? I’m going to body pump tomorrow. Despite carrying a 18+lb baby, my arms needed serious recovery after last Friday’s class. Yes, I was there. I entered 10 minutes late 🙁 I’m still trying to adjust time for baby…it takes longer to get anywhere now ;P
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
Those counters are amazing- I want them in my house!
Laura @Foodsnobstl says
Wow! Everything is really coming along.

I’m so jealous….of that pizza!! I will have to try my hand at making something like this in my own kitchen (possibly w/out the artichokes though…not a huge fan).
The bakery looks awesome by the way!!! I’m so excited for you guys 🙂 Makes me have a little more faith that one day I will own my own shop too.
