Ay yi yi!!! 7+ hours of organic chem and I’m still not ready yet. But I’m going to bed now and I’ll just have to do my best. This is definitely one of the hardest tests I’ve ever prepared for.
I came home from class pretty hungry and made a nice sit-down snack: 1 small chopped apple, about 2/3 cup TJ’s greek, a few tbsp pom seeds and some almonds. The husband had a peanut butter bar from GH and fresh bread, but I did not eat them
I also had some ketones and aldehydes –
My friend Victoria came over to study with me around 5 and we just now finished. Lucky us, we had our own personal chemistry chef to make dinner!
He made this Tomato Soup with Beans and Rosemary that actually turned out to be really, really good.
Here are his modifications, which he nicely typed up for me 🙂
1.5 medium carrots, diced
1 celery stalk diced
3 clove garlic
2t oil,
sautee above
Then Add:
28oz crushed tomatoes
8oz mater paste
15oz navy beans
1C broth
1t red pepper flakes
.5t bay leaves
S & P to taste
TODO: Bring to boil, lower heat, simmer 30 mins, blend, homph
I also had a slice of GH Dakota bread –
The husband is sound asleep – he’s going on Day 4 of getting up at 3am! Poor thing. I am sad I am leaving him at home this weekend 🙁 He’s taking me to the airport tomorrow so at least we’ll see each other then.
OKGOTTAGONIGHT!

aw, what a sweetheart. I have to admit, the soup just looked like a bowl of spaghetti sauce but after hearing the ingredients, it sounds pretty good! and easy too!

The soup looks so comforting, perfect study food. Have a fabulous time in Chicago! If you want to/have time to go somewhere unique for Brunch, try Orange, with a peel. Fresh juice bar, fun twists on classic dishes…

Kath your eating today seemed pretty pristine! Unlike mine, which included two fun packs of m&ms. Halloween leftovers in the office. Sigh.
ashley (sweet & natural) says
Saw on Jenna’s site that you all are doing brunch at Panera and was wondering if you’ve ever been? It seems like it would be your kind of place – good bread! I miss it b/c we don’t have one in NYC!

Ketones and aldehydes! Wicked!! Ok, maybe not, but it looks like you are well nourished for studying 🙂 Good luck!

that soup does look super tasty. will need to try it next week when i get back from my business trip!
question for kath (and anyone who knows actually…): i just opened a new jar of smuckers natural peanut butter and it needs stirring (argh).
how do you all get your peanut butters so nice and smooth when they come with that layer of oil on top?
i always end up slopping it all over the counter. (and my pants one time…)
is there a trick to it that i’m missing? or just good, old-fashioned muscle power and patience?
emmy says
don’t stress, the trip sounds like tons of fun! it’s funny that someone else mentioned Panerra, b/c when I saw that I was surprised. I’ve never lived near one, but I actually used to adore Panera and look forward to visiting it….before I saw the nutritional stats. The kids’ turkey and cheese sandwich alone had more than 900 calories! I in no way think high-calorie food should be banned, but for a sandwhich?!? I have been too annoyed by their seeming effort to UNhealthy the food that I haven’t been back.
i love your blog says
i had to study that last year! there is just so much information to know. But once you know it seriously u wont forget!
jess says
That soup looks great! Did you blend the entire batch so it was extra smooth? How do you think it would taste if you just blended half so it was a bit chunky?
Good luck with chemistry! Focus focus!
Moran says
Kath you’ll do GREAT!

ashley (sweet & natural),
Yes, I’ve been to Panera and LOVE IT!! Until I got married, their’s was the best bread in the world. Love the sourdough baguettes. And the black bean soup (even if it is high sod). I just haven’t had the chance to go in a long time since I try not to eat out much (and there’s not one near Winthrop).
emmy , Funny you mention Panera being high calorie because for my Intro to Nutrition course we had to plan a meal at a fast food place (Panera counted) and make a really healthy menu and a really UNhealthy menu. Out of a whole class of McDonald’s, Hardees, Jack in the Box, etc., my “Day at Panera” beat everyone in FAT and SODIUM!!! I had things like muffins, capuccinos, scones, big sandwiches, etc. on the menu. It was hilarious.
Tara,
old-fashioned muscle power and patience? = yes!! Just keep on stirring….and stirring…
jess ,
We lightly blended the whole thing so there were still some chunks. It was great.

Tara,
I put my peanut butter upside down on the counter for a day and then stir it up before I put it in the fridge. By turning it upside down, the oil seems to incorporate a bit more. I’ve also heard other people suggest leaving the container upside down in the fridge. Happy Friday everyone! Katy
ashley (sweet & natural) says
The black bean soup was always my fav. If it was on the menu, I automatically went for the “you pick two.” 🙂
athensfoodie says
Cool recipe- I have been looking for an easy and delicious soup so I may have to try this. One question for The Husband- was there really no rosemary in the recipe? Did you add it at the end, or did you modify it to take the rosemary out. Looks yummy though- hopefully I will make it for Sunday night dinner.
THanks!

I remember those marathon study sessions for organic. Good luck!

I’m taking O-Chem right now too at the University of Washington in Seattle, and my class is using the same book as you!!! It’s tough stuff. My professor purposely makes the tests hard enough so that the class averages between 50-55%, and then he just curves our grades! It makes me feel like such a failure at O-Chem. Gah!
