Rice cooker oats came out perfect today!!! Although they were brown and I’m not really sure why. Either I added a ton of cinnamon or the bananas caramelized on the bottom. Both are delicious options!
Check out the volume on this bowl!! HUGE! Texture was great too.
Ingredients: 1/3 cup coach’s oats, 1.33 cups water, half banana, pinch salt, sprinkle cinnamon, 1 tbsp currants, 1 tbsp chia seeds. [I think the chias helped absorb some water and keep the texture thicker]
Setting: porridge + timer
Mix ins: Stirred in 1/3 cup cottage cheese at end and allowed to warm
Toppings: Nuts About Granola Lover’s Blend + almond butter
Delicate eaters would have said “oh dear, this bowl was so much I couldn’t finish it all” but I had no problem
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Nothing like a big bowl of oats to start your morning. I just had one myself! 😀
Oh and I like that linen!
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
I bet it was the cinnamon! My oats always turn brown when I add a lot of that 😀
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Those oats do look quite fluffy! Granola and nut butter are such good toppings. Have a great Wednesday! 🙂
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love a nice bowl of oats–but usually after a workout (I can’t eat that before). Enjoy your day, Kath!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
What a good idea using a rice cooker! They look great.
Michelle@PeachyPalate says
I want those oats! I have no rice cooker though…any way to replicate or produce similar results?
KathEats says
I think the key to the super volume is increasing the water/liquid amounts. It will take longer to cook on the stovetop, but if volume is your goal, it will be worth the wait.
Michelle (Peachy Palate) says
keep meaning to try voluminous out oats, were you cook them partially at night, or do you have any handy methods? I’d just be worried the oats will get lost in in the extra liquid if left to simmer away!
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
That’ll hold ya over this morning! Caramelized bananas? Drooool!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yums!!
Molly @ RDexposed says
I think oatmeal is a meal you have to definitely work at to throw down a decent sized bowl. I’ll “stretch” my stomach for that rather than grossed processed tube meat….
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I’m glad you’re getting the hang of the rice cooker oats, I like the hands free idea of it!
Jodi @ Jodeexi Writes says
Looks so good! Making the perfect bowl of oatmeal is such a satisfying endeavor 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
YUMMMMMY!!! Happy Wednesday!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I like the idea of rice cooker oats but not the thought of cleaning the rice cooker!
KathEats says
Actually I’ve been really surprised at how easy it is. No harder than cleaning out a non-stick pot. In fact, I think it’s even easier because the surface is even slipperier and after a 20 minute soak (while I’m enjoying my oats) the oats just rinse out – barely a sponge is needed. If my crockpot would clean out this easy, I would use it a lot more too
Tracy says
Agreed! It’s a cinch to clean. I’d use my slow cooker more often if it were that easy to clean, too.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
YUM! i’m sure no delicate eater… the bigger the better! 😉
Karen says
Ha…delicate eater I am not! 🙂
My oatmeal is always brown hued too b/c I pile in a strong saigon cassia cinnamon!
Melanie says
So, after a couple of weeks you would order the rice cooker all over again??? I eat oats almost every morning and thinking of ordering this rice cooker! Last night I made overnight steel cut oats in the crockpot with frozen peaches, blueberries and a cinnamon stick! It was like having peach cobbler for breakfast!
KathEats says
Definitely!! For the rice alone. The oats are just a fun bonus
kelsey says
Ahaha, I am definitely not a delicate eater – I could have easily finished that off! Looks delicious!
Mom says
Love the blue designs of the bowl and the cloth, but I think Gram’s spoon could use a bit of polish (unless it’s just the lighting).
KathEats says
yes, it probably does need some polish
mel says
I always eat volumious meals and I could tackle that bowl. it looks great! I love that you aren’t a delicate eater….real women eat!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
caramelized bananas are absolutely delicious!! lucky mistake, i guess!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oh wow, that is a thing of beauty!I wouldn’t let any of that goodness go to waste either!
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I am the furthest thing from being a delicate eater. I’m all about the volume! Haha… 😀
Love the colored bowl and linen! 😀
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
love when oats turn really brown! 🙂
Sarah says
yummy, love how filling this looks, almost as delish as cookies too.
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
yay for progress with oats in the rice cooker! Not as bland this time, huh? 🙂
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Nothing like a big bowl of oats! I need to try it with cottage cheese!
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
Those silly delicate eaters! I just don’t understand them 😉
Jess says
This looks fantastic. Haha I am in no way a delicate eater, especially not in the morning. Oats are one of the few foods that keep me full until lunch!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Looks perfect!! Glad you found a combo you like 🙂
Kaila says
I had chocolatey oats for breakfast too! Except mine were of the overnight variety! With the heat wave we’re having I needed a cool breakfast!
Khushboo says
That bowl ain’t got nothing on me ;)!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Love a big bowl of oats in the morning! Great way to kick start the day! I am loving the sound of caramalized bananas and oatmeal!
Jessica says
You read my mind when I saw your last comment- I was thinking the whole time “finally! someone else who can polish off a bowl ‘o oats that deep and feel nothing but pity for those who can’t!” Fab.

Delicate eaters…pshaw! 😉
Dee says
Oh my gosh! It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die! IT’S SO FLUFFY!!! Lol. Pardon my silly Despicable Me references… Seriously tho? What a gorgeous looking bowl! I mean the oats & the actual bowl itself. 😉

darn it. double post. sorry about that kath. i blame my office’s out of date browser. :/
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
Caramelized bananas?? Yum!! I throw a couple of bananas in the pan any time I make pancakes or french toast now, thanks to you! 🙂
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Wow- that IS a volumized bowl! Since I have the exact same bowl, I can use it as reference. I always use 1/2 c. of oats- I can’t believe this is only 1/3 (and yeah- I realize the cottage cheese adds some bulk, but still!)
Grilled banana is a preferred topping for me- unfortunately, I can really only do it on the weekend.
dorry says
ha – love your term “delicate eaters”. I’m with you – the more volume, the better. I love a HUGE bowl of oats.
Cait's Plate says
I definitely think I could have easily taken that whole bowl down as well 🙂 That granola looks awesome – is there chocolate in it or are my eyes just playing tricks on me? So glad you got the rice cooker recipe down! I can’t wait to try it!
KathEats says
Tiny tiny chips!
Cait's Plate says
Love it!
Becca says
I was expecting to see some chocolate brownies in this post …ah well 😛

Opps! I thought my first comment didn’t publish, so I wrote it again.

I’m currently feeling very Kath-esque while enjoying a big bowl of coconut oats with Wild Squirrel on top (thank you, OpenSky!). I may need to invest in a rice cooker soon!!
Aylin @ Glow Kitchen says
I am only a delicate either in the afternoon. The morning and night I am just RAVENOUS!
Gloria says
I’m going to give your rice cooker oats a try! I’m definitely not a delicate eater. I made my sis a big bowl of oats one morning, and she said she was too full to finish it all! I felt like a pig for a minute, but then I got over it haha
SweatyGirl says
My rice cooker says don’t ever put spices, seasonings, or anything other than the grain & water into the machine! Just an FYI, in case you’re putting the fruit & cinnamon right in there!
If you haven’t tried it yet, wheatberries come out SO good with a rice cooker, too!
KathEats says
Mine says only to on the mixed setting, but I got the Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook and it has all KINDS of recipes with all kinds of mix-ins so I think it’s more of a protection against the cooker.
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
I have the same bowl! Love it for extra voluminous oats!
I would have had NO problem devouring that huge bowl of oats either 🙂 Oatmeal doesn’t stand a chance against me in the mornings!
Jules @ La Petite Maison Verte says
Hah! LOVE your comment about “delicate eaters”…I am definitely NOT one of those, I like foods that fill me up 🙂 Looks delicious, Kath!
Lindsay @ Running the Windy City says
I like to add a ton of cinnamon to my oats and they always turn out brownish, probably why yours did as well!
I love volumious oatmeal!! Looks delicious!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
That does look fluffylicious!!!! ahhh. And you’re always so good at making PUNS with your titles! I gotta learn that skill from you 😛 And I’m all for big breakfasts~other meals not so much. But breakfast? Bring it on!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Glad you got your rice cooker oats down pat. Love it when something finally ‘clicks’. Now you’ve got the secret figured out and you’ll save yourself lots of time!
Megan says
What a PERFECT breakfast!
Christine (The Raw Project) says
The oats sound wonderful, very interesting in a rice cooker! I’m still debating on getting a rice cooker and this makes it very tempting.
Laura @ She Eats Well says
I love the bowl and the placement; fun and SPRINGY patterns (le sigh, as I look outside the window it is raining in San Francisco and foggy). Also, any breakfast with hints of chocolate is a good one in my book.
EatFree says
yum! never thought of adding cottage cheese to oatmeal. sounds like it will add a nice richness! will try! 🙂
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
Another gorgeous table cloth. I just love your taste.
Jen says
Wow! Oats in a rice cooker. What a brilliant, brilliant idea. I am definitely trying this. They are so fluffy! And the brown color, whatever made it that way, makes it looks so yummy and wholesome.
Tracy says
Yay! I’m glad you finally had a success! A little trial & error usually gets the job done. I bet the chia seeds helped. Re the brown color, did you add vanilla?
Anne says
Your oats are starting to look like mine re: VOLUME!!! Supersoaking them is definitely key. I wonder if you could encourage banana caramelization by putting the sliced banana at the bottom of the rice cooker…
Looks like you’re enjoying your new toy…er…appliance
Rachael @ FreshlyMinted says
I JUST purchased my first rice cooker, and have been waiting for you to perfect your mixture before I delve into the world of oats… Looks like I can start 😉 Thanks for sharing your trial and errors!
P.S… I’m with you on your last comment – I can honestly I’ve never been accused of “eating like a bird”!
Abby White @Eat, Drink and Be Aware says
Ha! Kath you made me laugh with the “delicate” eaters comment. My husband always tells me he can never finish his bowl of oats because they are so filling. I never seem to have the problem and am usually sad when my bowl of oats are gone and am tempted to lick the bowl because they are so darn good.
Thanks for sharing:)
Stacy @ Say It With Sprinkles says
I wouldn’t have had a problem with the portions, either, I can really wolf down some oats, haha! =)
Heidi - Apples Under My Bed says
Cinnamon? Sure, sure, you added Rum to them to turn them brown, didn’t you 😉 haha, sorry lame 🙂
Heidi xo

Wow, that looks incredible. I’ve never tried currants and chia seeds in my oatmeal before. That is a great idea!
