Do you guys go through weeks of the month when you’re just not hungry? I totally do. I think it’s part of being female. Some weeks I am ravenous and other weeks my usual meals leave me uncomfortably stuffed. I was expected to get hungry soon after my lighter lunch today and really didn’t! I had an Amazing Grass bar at 5PM and at 8 still wasn’t really hungry. It always catches me off guard.
Here are my packed snacks for the afternoon + evening of classes –
Amazing Grass Peanut Butter bar (which Jenna gave me!), persimmon, Frog Hollow Farm peaches and a few almonds. I ate a few peaches and the bar at 5PM and that was it. The bar was great. The Amazing Grass bars are all surprisingly good and not that grassy at all (compared to taking a shot of the juice!) These dried peaches are really growing on me too!
I came home to find the kitchen upturned from a session of beer bottling and chicken broth making.
The happy brewer
He just brewed a batch of a Moose Drool look-alike and was bottling it tonight. WOW – I had a few sips of the non-carbonated sample and it is pretty darn close to the real Montana Moose Drool that we loved so much on our trip.
The chicken stock was made with celery, carrots, herbs and a bunch of chicken stuff from our most recent whole chicken bake. I had planned to have leftovers for dinner, but Matt announced he was having broth and bread for dinner. How appropriate for him 😉
After peeking into this bag and finding a HUGE hunk of sourdough, I decided I wanted broth and bread too!
But when contemplating the broth, I had the idea to stir in an egg and make egg drop soup! I’ve always wanted to make it from scratch. I didn’t have time to research, so I just whisked an egg in a ramekin and slowly drizzled into the hot broth in a pot while stirred. MAGIC!
I actually ended up sharing the bowl with Matt, who was too busy cleaning to make a bowl and I wasn’t too hungry.
But I did manage to eat all of my bread! It was as good as I imagined and I had a nice doughy sour hunk!
Probably going to start my tumor research now, but won’t be staying up as late tonight! Tomorrow will be spent writing all day since I have the night off from class.
Nite!

I’m pretty much starving all the time 🙂
Sara says
Those Amazing Grass peanut butter-flavored bars are great because they’re high in protein — something many raw/”green” foods lack! And I’m not really a bread person, but that hunk of dough looks great.
Meg @ be fit be full says
I definitely have days when I’m not really that hungry and just end up snaking all day. I always drool over the bread you guys have!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Mmmm…I love egg drop soup. So simple, but so GOOD.
amanda says
I am starved all the time. Really no exceptions unless I am super sick. Which since I have been on weight loss journey I have rarely gotten sicked anymore. Anyway your beer your hubby brewed sounds yummy!
Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries says
i looove egg drop soup! i do the same thing! ialways mean to look up the real recipe haha, but i think this way works wonderfully!
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
I just got amazing grass products to review and I went through 3 bars in 20 hours. They’re addictingly good! Especially when you tell yourself they’re so healthy
Kara says
Man, I wish I had a Great Harvest nearby — the closest one is 63 miles away!! 🙁 I could go for some crusty sourdough right about now…
Julie says
I’ve never had egg drop soup, it looks so different than what I imaged it to be. I though it was an egg litterally dropped into the soup and cooked that way. But it’s not. Interesting. It looks like noodles. I am fascinated with this for some reason!
Mel says
Oh, another soup to add to my list! I always seem to forget how easy egg drop soup is to make.
Annalisa says
I love Moose Drool! Living in NY it’s impossible to get 🙁 However, my husband is from Boise so we try to smuggle some home when we can! I have 2 bottles left from this summer that I am saving for when the moment strikes….which might be soon after reading your post.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Egg drop soup is definitely a classic in my book!
Broth and Bread sounds like the perfect simple dinner!
Jessie (Vegan-minded) says
I could totally make a meal out of broth and bread. They just go so well together! Perfect dinner in my book. 🙂
Kristin says
Kath,
I found your site today cause I have been looking into trying all real food – eliminating anything process. And I just wanted say it is nice to see a fellow Davidson graduate. I am from the class of 1994 – a bit before your time, but have the same love. I will keep reading your blog.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
yeah, my hunger has been ebbing and flowing lately. it seems to balance itself out but i hate not being hungry for a delicious meal!
Shawnee says
Hey Kath! Sorry if you get this comment twice, but I wanted to tell you about hormonology.info. It’s a website that talks about our cycles and how it affects our spending habits, moods, eating habits, etc. It turns out that during weeks one and two of our cycles, due to rising estrogen, we’re less hungry. It’s during the next two weeks that the cravings increase! Just thought I’d share. 😀
Hillary - Nutrition Nut on the Run says
How adorable to come home to your husband making chicken broth : ) Sometimes simple dinners are the best way to go.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I think it is SO cool that he makes beer. I wish I had a hubby that did that. 🙂
ri'chele says
Oh egg drop! Causes me to miss my mum. She always made us egg drop to comfort us!
Erin says
Yum, simple dinners like that are the best especially when you’re able to successfully turn an idea into a good meal. 🙂
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
I definitely have off and on weeks (and days!). I think that it’s so important to just listen to your body and its cravings and give it what it needs! Stick with what’s healthy, but our body’s will definitely give us signals as to what to turn to. 🙂
What a neat dish Kath! Perfect light soup for Fall day.
Tania @ Moment Anew says
Mmmmm….that looks like such a nice, warm and comforting meal! 🙂
Lauren @ eater not a runner says

I can’t believe Matt just brewed the beer himself!!!
Carolyn says
I’m going to have to keep my out for some persimmons. I’ve never had one.
Joelle (The Pancake Girl) says
I do have those weeks where I’m not hungry at all, but they are far outnumbered by my normal routine of being ready for a yummy meal at the drop of a hat. 😉
Bridget says
I hate days where I can’t figure out my hunger, I always seem to end up just snacking away the day, never feeling “satisfied!” Usually carbs make it better 🙂
Bec says
what a simple but surly tasty meal! Also I am so jealous of all the yummy breads you try on a regular basis!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I have that same type of eating habit. It depends on the week.
Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now says
I really never have a week when I’m just not hungry…kinda wish I did!
Hillary - Nutrition Nut on the Run says
On the topic of bars, check out this site (if you haven’t before): http://www.elementbars.com/
I think it’s a great idea…but perhaps a little pricey.

Hi Kath!
This is the first time I’m posting on your blog although I’ve been a huge follower for quite a while now. (hope that doesn’t make me a stalker. hmm…) Your stories are always so inspirational and cheery. I especially love all your fresh and creative ways to spice up your meals – every dish looks gourmet in my eyes! haha. Following you blog as really made me value my body and pushed me to live a healthier, happier life. Oh, and not to mention productive! I still can’t believe you managed to complete an entire paper in TWO days! Ack! And here I am still struggling with mine, weeks after I began it, with the deadline looming over my (sleepy) head tomorrow. hmm.
Ok, on to the reason I finally decided to get off my lazy bum and post a comment: I noticed you made egg drop soup! 😀 I’m something of an egg drop soup fanatic (mainly because it was the first dish I perfected) so please excuse my excitability over this simple dish. For your first time, I’m so impressed by the quality of your egg ribbons! Very light, long and silky looking – the marks of a true chef 😉 But I hope you won’t mind if I give you a little advice? The trick I found to getting the perfect ribbon effect is to pour in the beaten egg AFTER you turn off the heat, then slowly stir in a figure eight. Eggs are very delicate and too much heat will curdle and toughen it in the soup. This way, one egg is enough to fill up an entire pot. To help with the fluffiness and silken texture of the soup, the traditional Chinese recipe calls for the use of tapioca flour (found in Asian supermarkets) but starch can be substituted. Typically, I like to dissolve the tapioca flour in a little bit of cold water first (not warm, or you’ll make tapioca jelly), pour the mixture into the soup before turning off the heat. However, as I’ve began eating healthier, I’ve been doing without the thickener. I like to add seared scallops and chopped green onions to mine 🙂
G’luck with your second paper! happy writing :]

Hi Kath!
I’m a long time reader and want to say I love what you are doing!! I saw this offer (while pouting that there is no earthfare in my area) and thought that you might use it!

Yay! I’ve had Moose Drool beer hear in Montana! Too bad you didn’t get to go to the three micro-breweries in Billings. We know and chat regularly with Mike of Carter’s and George of Yellowstone Valley Brewing Company. It’s always fun to hear about their creative thoughts on beer recipe-experimenting.
Jeannie says
Really cool table setting!
christie @ honoring health says
I have never even eaten egg drop soup and have always wondered about hey they make it.
I also have what I call hungry days and then days where I just don’t feel hungry. The hungry days never surprise me 😉 but the not hungry days sure do!
Stacey says
I know exactly what you mean! Ever since the weather has gotten a little cooler, my stomach just doesn’t cue my hunger like it used to! I used to wake up and be READY for breakfast, but now I have to sit around and wait until I actually feel hungry! My afternoon snacks have vanished too…me no likey!! I’m a snacky person 😀 Good luck on your tumor research, I just completed a paper on hfcs and links with weight gain…<–good thing we find that stuff interesting, right?? 😉
Holly says
I live in your area. Where do you think the best bread is around here???
coco says
thank you for pointing out that it’s normal to not feel hungry. I find my appetite lately is not there and don’t hungry often. But when I tell to people, they just look me weird as I’m pretending something. 🙁
I know that we have cycle as woman and it’s normal to feel more hungry before the period… but when is exactly our hungry decrease? keep us updated on this issue if you find out! 🙂
Jac says
egg drop soup is awesome.. sometimes though i’m not hungry, i still eat. not good…
Susan says
Oooh, I’ve never had egg drop soup before. That’s a great idea though, I’ll have to try it 🙂
Anne P says
Blechhhh I actually kind of hate those Amazing Grass bars. Yicky taste, I think. Too fake sweet/weird for me!
But your soup looks lovely 🙂 Great idea on the egg!
Kath says
Kristin,
Welcome!! Maybe we’ll run into each other at a homecoming 🙂
Shawnee,
Very cool!! And so true!
Light Delight with Tou Tou,
He was just bottling tonight!
Hillary,
Oh cool – like the You Bars.
Fei Fei,
I did just remove the soup from the heat, so maybe that’s why I had such good luck!? And mine didn’t taste quite as good as the pros, so maybe that was my lack of starch? Thanks for the tips!
Jessica,
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!! Totally going to use that.
Shelley,
We’ll be back to MT and you know beer will be involved 😉
Holly,
Obviously Great Harvest Bread Co!! (Matt works there)
coco,
Check out that hormonology site Shawnee posted above. It has all the details.

Any chance Matt could share the Moose Drool recipe he used? We do all grain brewing also and were hoping to make a nice brown for winter. We discovered Moose Drool out in Glacier 3 years ago and absolutely love it!
Kristie Lynn says
Hehe, I love that he’s showing all the beer he bottled with one hand while holding a glass of wine in the other. 😛
Tina says
I really hate those days when I just don’t feel like eating. Catches me off guard too!! Your simple meal of bread and broth looks really great though.
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale says
Nicely done with the soup! That’s exactly the method I use – works like a charm.
Another version I like to make is with miso. Just take water, add miso and scallions, heat up, and then do the egg thing. It’s good and comforting if you aren’t that hungry or have a tummy ache.
Marisa (vinyasa mama) says
Haha, I especially love that Matt is drinking a glass of wine while bottling beer! Where’s the beer glass???
Kath says
That’s some of the beer he just bottled! And it’s a beer glass – Dogfish Head!
