After a few days of rain and clouds, I think everyone in Cville was out celebrating the GORGEOUS September weather tonight!!
I left the bakery and headed to the new house for a few appointments. Given my public life, we’re getting a killer security system in the new place. Don’t even try to tap on the window – it’s all covered. It’s a little expensive, but also something we should have gotten 2 houses ago and I don’t think we will regret the piece of mind.
More photos were requested, yes?
Living room mid-paint!!!
Before:
The gray wall that I love but will be painted over. The same color is in the dining room and we’re leaving that one.
While I was there, I had a snack – KERF reader Kim brought me a few of Emily’s “Perfect Vegan Cookies” today at the bakery!
Yum!! They tasted a bit bananay – was there banana in the recipe Kim!? Or was that my imagination…
At 5:30, Faith came over! And then we walked downtown. PERFECT Friday!
First stop was Market Street Wine Shop for a little wine tasting and brie cheese eating.
Then we went to the Pavilion and chilled and talked in the grass. It was so very relaxing!
Matt finished work and joined us, and we said goodbye to Faith and headed to find dinner. I had a Groupon to Brookville, so that’s where we landed.
Neither of us wanted a full glass of wine, so we decided to share. They were kind enough to split it for us – with heavy pours!
[Note the ball jars!!]
We decided to share 3 courses rather than get big entrees for us both.
We started with a beautiful heirloom tomato salad –
Followed by an AWESOME poached egg, pepper and corn ragu.
LOVE poached eggs!
We were given chilled watermelon soup for tasting!
And split this amazingly buttery tomato-topped local pork belly for our entrée.
I gave Matt 2/3 and took 1/3. This was so rich, but also so flavorful!
It was tough to say no to dessert, but we decided we were plenty full.
We went to wish our employee Rosemary a very happy birthday at a nearby restaurant –
And then Matt walked a mile back to the bakery to get his car and I biked home alone! Scary, but this night was so refreshing.
Someone was hosting a marshmallow campfire party and did not invite me!

The house painting is coming along! Can’t believe you’ll be in there so soon.

Looks lovely!!! Congrats!

Happy Friday! I still remember those concerts from when I was in preschool and I would go with my parents. 😀 I wish we’d had watermelon soup then though….that sounds amazing! I love getting a few appetizers instead of an entree. It’s easier to get smaller dishes, try different, things, and share. I should remember to do that more often!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I’d like to face plant into that poached egg dish. That looks incredible!

Security is a MUST. Whether you’re a popular blogging celeb or just your average (me). I hope that was easier than the cable fiasco. Congrats on the new house, you must be enjoying the same amazing weather that rolled into Charleston this week! The weekend is supposed to be amazing, perfect for moving! Sure beats rain and/or humidity. Good luck with everything! =)

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
I actually commented on that post of Emily’s and asked her about the banana in the cookies…b/c she used a full banana in them and I wondered if they would taste banana-ey or not.
She never got back to me on that one…
But now I have my answer.
And the painting looks awesome! Wow…so much progress!

Looks like a lovely night. The food looked delicious too. I’m so glad fall is almost here. It’s my favorite season! Btw, I received the granola from Open Sky today and it is scrumptious!!! I snacked on Brown Cow maple yogurt with groovy granola sprinkled on top after mowing the yard. Who knew granola could be so good?
KathEats says
Yay!

What? They didn’t invite you to their campfire?!? Rude! We’re using a Groupon-type coupon for dinner tonight too! 🙂 Have you had any security issues since you’ve been blogging? Super scary!

My foodie soulmate and I always share when we go out. That way we get to try more! Pork belly is all over the place now! Have you tried lamb belly? It’s actually even better than pork!

Any creepy stalkerish stories to share d/t muchly needed security system?

At least you’ll get a discount on your homeowner’s insurance. 🙂
I can’t believe you’re moving for the second time and will probably be unpacked in a week. I moved a little over a year ago and am still not completely unpacked. Want to come visit?

Hi Kath,
I LOVE Faith’s necklace. Could you ask where she got it. I live in NC on the coast and love anything with waves like it.
Thanks!
KathEats says
I forwarded it to her!
Amy says
Thanks so much!
faith says
Hi Amy,
The necklace was given to me by my mom when I moved to Peru. She said it’s a symbol for protection or something and the wave was appropriate because one reason we were moving there was for my husband to surf! Unfortunately it has no brand on it and I believe she bought it in a little boutique in our tiny WV hometown. It’s made out of bone and came on a piece of string…hopefully you will come across one someday!

Glad you took advantage of the gorgeous weather! I can’t wait to see more updates on the house- I love learning from how you decide to decorate, etc as I am SO bad at that and need all the inspiration I can get! 🙂

Splitting meals is always the way to go in my mind! That pork belly looks amazing – so does that poached egg corn ragu! I don’t even know what ragu is, but it looks good!
Margo @ Peanut Butter Trees says
Great idea to split a glass of wine. Ans good to see you guys are able to go out and have a little fun despite the impending big move!
Hillary says
Smart idea to beef up on security—definitely something I wouldn’t have thought of, but it makes sense!
Fran@Broken Cookies Don't Count says
The poached egg dish looks delicious! Not sure if I know how to poach an egg. It can’t be hard, I’ll have to give it a try!
Susan says
They’re not too hard to make. The hardest thing is getting your water to the correct temp. I have an electric range and it’s a pain. It’s easier with gas.
Emmy (WIne and Butter) says
You are SO disciplined! I definitely consider myself pretty healthy but splitting a glass of wine and no dessert in a restaurant… you are a proper grown up!!!! xox
Marijke says
I’m glad to see that Faith is feeling better!
I love that you’re sharing pictures of re-decorating your house 🙂 I loved all your home neat home series so it’s great to be able to see you set up in your new place!

What!! Who was that someone!? And why didn’t they invite you?? UNACCEPTABLE 😉
That dinner looked so delicious. I love the chilled watermelon soup – I would’ve been all over that (and love the ball jars of course!). And those vegan cookies – they look so gooey and delicious.
rosie says
Definitely have to have security! I have to say, you’ve still done a really good job at disguising which part of town you live in…I am from Charlottesville and I haven’t been able to figure it out. But I have an idea…
OK, so that sounded creepy… Don’t worry, not a stalker! Just putting your posts in context 🙂
KathEats says
Tell me where you think – I’m curious to know!!
rosie says
Off JPA somewhere, around Fry’s Spring….Stribling Ave?

You are close!! Ask me again when we’ve officially left this house 😉

I love all the heirloom tomatoes on menus at this time of year! I had a spectacular heirloom tomato salad at a restaurant this week too. 😀
Thealogian says
Now, I really want to try watermelon soup!
Security: my church two nights ago had all three of our HVAC units stolen from the grounds! It was a pretty big operation (aka the people who could boost HVAC’s need to know how to install HVACS…sad that people with that level of marketable skills are thieving). Of course, they were outside, so the security system? Not all that helpful 🙁
Security systems are kinda a pain (according to this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/01/your-money/household-budgeting/01wealth.html), about 80% of security alarm warnings are false alarms and they cost local police departments quite a bit per year (though, a recent development in some communities has the police department charge home owners $75 per false alarm…prolly not in cville, tho). It also talks about its important for people with public lives to have security systems (they site Martha Stewart’s security company starts at rates of $7,000 per month!!!). I totally understand why someone with a growing online/in-print personality would want to get a security system, so please don’t take sharing the article as some kind of criticism in your case, its just that in general I think that they can give people a false sense of safety or alternatively, a false sense of danger, like rapist/murders/etc are just around every corner. As with most things, its best to find a happy medium–be cautious, but don’t freak yourself out…and remember, that people often victim blame because they like to think that they are invulnerable to the awfulness of this world, but it is always the bad guy’s fault.
Okay, that was heavy, back to the watermelon soup–is it really just a watermelon smoothie of sorts?
KathEats says
Hopefully ours wont’ trip at all!
robin says
what do you mean they didnt invite you:(
Laura says
Where did Faith get her necklace? It is beautiful!
