Apple picking on a misty Monday morning
Autumn is creeping in like fog over a mountain! Mazen’s class went on a field trip to Carter’s Mountain on Monday. It felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves, and it was nice to be up there on a misty, cool morning.
Our class’s schedule started with apple picking, and we headed for the rows of Golden Delicious apples. Mazen loved hunting for “the biggest ones ever!” and we filled up two bags. Apple crisp is in our future!
Next up was a hayride! This was my favorite part of the day. The subtle jostling almost put me back to sleep!
On a clear day you can see for miles and miles.
Our class attended Apple School after this, which was a cute tour through the four seasons of apple growing. It was cute to watch the kids answer questions and make comments. Mazen was very pleased to have his mom with him in “school” and kept asking me if I was staying longer.
And, of course, we ended with a pair of apple cider donuts. These were SO good – almost cakey!
The field trip meant no school all day, so we spent our afternoon making a giant pillow fort.
He really sealed himself in!
For dinner that night we had simple lemony baked salmon (salt, pepper, garlic powder, olive oil, and lemon slices, baked at 400° for 20 minutes), plus a salad made from cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, S+P, kale salad mix, and balsamic vinegar.
I hope you guys are having a great week!

Apple picking this time of year is my favorite fall activity! It looks like you had a great time! It’s my goal this season to go apple picking at least once, especially when my favorite types of apples are in season and ready to be picked, like Fuji, Golden Delicious, etc.

I wish I’d had a chance to go apple picking when I was young! To this day, I still haven’t been. It just seems like such an essential fall activity.

I went to Carter Mountain Orchard on my trip to Cville last year. They have a hard cider cellar down below and a winery up top. I bought a piece of art right off the walls at the winery. Great place!

Wow, this brought back some fun memories of apple picking with my first child and her kindergarten class in 1990! All the students were so excited to bring home a bag of apples they’d picked themselves. Then, I recall riding the bus from the orchard back to school in Cambridge, MA. All the apples rolled from their bags onto the floor as the kids snoozed. Upon our arrival, they tried to find only the apples they picked earlier. It was amusing and memorable!
Now, I’m eager for that sweet smell of freshly baked apple crisp – mmmm!

You’re very lucky to go on field trips with your son! I almost never go and it makes me very sad because I LOVE seeing my son at school. The reality of 2017 I guess. The flexibility in your job is a such a blessing!

Hi Kath. I just wanted to say, I’ve been reading your blog for years (maybe since mid-2008?) and you seem so totally happy in this phase of your life. I don’t know if it’s just my perception but you seem so at peace and relaxed. This isn’t a dig at all, I don’t want the tone of this to sound like ‘oh you were so uptight and now you’re not’ but I can genuinely sense your smile through your posts lately. It makes me happy and I felt like sharing. 🙂

Thank you so much : ) It feels that way!

Ahhh, I love Fall! We’ve had such warm temps here in Western PA that it doesn’t feel like Fall yet (although some leaves are changing!).
Love the pillow fort, Mazen!

Apple season! Question–The sweeter they are, the more sugar they have in them? (I ask because organic ones seems sweeter than conventionally bought?)

Can you tell me where you bought your dining room table? I’ve been on the hunt for “the one” for about 8 months with no luck but love the looks of yours.
We need somewhere to peel the apples hahaha!

It’s the Pottery Barn Toscana Table – we love it!

I LIVE for the Carter Mountain apple cider donuts!! It’s a tradition. I gotta get down there before the end of the season. Last year I waited too late in October and it was so picked over that all the apples were too high for me to get to XD
